“The new software for Apple TV features a simpler and faster interface that gives you instant access to your favorite content,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of Internet Services. “HD movies and HD TV shows from iTunes have been a huge hit with Apple TV customers, and with Apple TV 3.0 they get great new features including iTunes Extras, Genius Mixes and Internet radio.”

Apple also reveled the iTunes library is composed of 8,000 Hollywood films with over 2,000 available in HD, 11 million songs, 10,000 music videos and over 50,000 TV show episodes are also available.

The only issue you might come across if the availability of films, although according to the video if the players are a success they may look into expanding their offerings. Futuresorce believes by 2013 Blu-ray will have a U.S. market penetration of 67.8%, despite this, Futuresource claims Blu-ray when compared to DVD will never reach the standalone player adoption rate DVD has.

    We think that Blu-ray is going very well, considering the range of delivery platforms in this current environment compared to the early days of DVD,” said Jim Bottoms, managing director of Futuresource. Today, however, “online is stronger, there is VOD expansion, etc.”

    Futuresource believes Blu-ray adoption will speed up if software prices fall.

A company called Related Content Database (RCDb) with partner Videon Central is working on a technology that allows you to directly access this content from your Blu-ray player without using the disc.

    “Blu-ray Disc players not only deliver the highest-quality home entertainment experience, our joint solution with Videon Central gives studios another path to the living room and a direct connection to their audience,” said Zane Vella, CEO of RCDb.

    Todd Erdley, CEO of Videon Central added, “By bringing our solutions together, we deliver a compelling experience to connected Blu-ray Disc players. The partnership with RCDb enables seamless access to Internet-delivered services and content for the consumer and in turn allows the manufacturer to build best-of-breed, high value, differentiated products.”

    This technology is expected to be included with future Blu-ray players, unfortunately it will not be backwards compatible with existing players. This technology will allow movie studios to release content that can expand beyond their physical install base bringing with it many possibilities.

    Odds are Blu-ray will be available as a premium add on for those wishing to give their new iMac the ability to playback Blu-ray content. If this turns out to be true it may come as a shock to some as nearly a year ago Apple’s Steve Jobs called Blu-ray a “bag of hurt”. Aside from Blu-ray, the report states the new iMacs will have a more affordable pricing structure in comparison to previous generations, audio related enhancements, and various aesthetic redesigns.

    Also of note, 8 manufactures have requested to join the CHDA, these range from TV manufactures to vendors. The CHDA believes CBHD’s only current weakness is the lack of manufacturer support and believe the 8 companies who applied will help alleviate this situation. The CHDA made bold claims by saying thanks to Blu-ray’s high price the format war was essentially a “game no one played.”

    We previously speculated more Hollywood studios would start pledging support for the CBHD format, it will be interesting to see if the format spreads into other Asian territories like the CHDA previously hinted at.

The decision will largely affect unprofitable Blockbuster locations with the remaining focus being put on the profitable ones. Blockbuster spokesperson Randy Hargrove had this to say via a phone interview with CNET.

    “All these stores are candidate stores,” Hargrove said. “Although we may in fact close that many stores, if we can renegotiate leases or remodel stores to make them more profitable, that number might go down.”

    Blockbuster predicts they will close roughly 300 to 385 stores by the end of 2009, previously they estimated they would only need to shut down between 280 to 300 by the end of 2009. Overall, Blockbuster is planning to shut down between 810 to 960 stores.

    The filing wasn’t specific as to what regions these closures would affect although we assume they are worldwide closures. Out of the 7,000 retail locations surveyed, Blockbuster found nearly 18% were unprofitable hence susceptible to closure.

    Lets go over the goods,  the BD390 has Netflix Streaming, Cinemanow, YouTube, Vudu, plays back MKVs via USB/Disc/Network and is fine Blu-ray disc player. Ohh wait, it also has 7.1 Analogs and 802.11N wireless built in.

    One thing does bother us about Vudu coming to the BD390….. We have no use for our stand alone Vudu box… Looks like we might have found our next FWC giveaway item!

A recent study by iSuppli Corp has found by the year 2013 only 16.3% of PC’s will ship with Blu-ray drives, up 3.6% from 2009. If iSuppli is to be believed, DVD will still be the primary optical disk based media in PC’s for quite some time. iSuppli believes Blu-ray will be successful in everything but the PC market, citing cost as a primary reason for slow PC adoption. Michael Yang, senior analyst for storage and mobile memory at iSuppli explains.

    “The cost issue is amplified by the fact that the library of content is so small that there really isn’t a reason for users to switch at the moment,” Yang said. And while this is changing and studios are rolling out more Blu-ray content every week, there remains a long way to go, he added.

    Another factor is that Blu-ray is having a difficult time supplanting the incumbent storage medium in PCs — the DVD-RW drive, Yang said.

    “From a historical perspective, each of the successful storage media in PCs has gained popularity only when content became available and when consumers actually understood that what they were getting was easy to use and worth the cost,” iSuppli stated in its report .

    Sony to this day still takes a lot of flak for shipping the PS3 and some Blu-ray players with only SD cables, it is disappointing seeing Microsoft joining suite in 2009. The Arcade SKU also ships with only Composite cables, the Pro SKU has been discontinued. If you plan on buying a Xbox 360 in the near future and want a out of the box HD experience, we suggest you buy now rather than later as “HD equipped” stock may still remain at some retailers.

    While most HD enthusiasts will be able to find HDMI cables for cheap, we wouldn’t put it past a few retail employees to point customers towards the $100+ Monster HDMI cables. If you happen to find a retailer who has plenty of HD equipped stock left, feel free to leave a comment about it so other Format War Central readers looking for the “bundle” can take advantage of the opportunity.
