The short story. Some guy has a stupid idea and thinks the idea is great. He then treks out to Google headquarters, and they listen to his pitch. Of course, this has a bit of internet momentum behind it in order for google to even hear his case.

According to the website, this quest of futility started on Feb 11, 2007. We have been in this for about a year now. I check in on the website, and the forums, every few days. To date, secrecy is pretty high, I am not even sure the beta testers really know what the actual idea is.

It has been a year, give it up! If you need to keep some dot com secret for more than a year, you missed the boat. This thing should have been put up for consumption by the six month mark.

I don’t know about you, but what moron uses a picture like that on their site anyway?

Annoyed I am, so I tallied up his blog. Below is a chart, telling you how much “stuff” this guy gets done.

Strong support on the forums, but a few sane people calling him on his shit. If he puts up a donations page, it is officially over.

As you can see, his blog is near all personal garbage. Anyone could distill it down into a single blog post. The title would be: Sorry, I have nothing to show for the last year, but I learned how to edit video and use Linux… w00t!

Great idea, poor implementation. Feel free to read on and post the items that piss you off about Time Machine. I am sure the list is much longer than I am able to come up with.

Can only “Back Up Now” by adding the Time Machine Application to your dock.

No way to back up only specific folders, you have to manually exclude every single directory you do not want to backup.

Applications will launch off the back up drive.

The on/off button in System Prefs is stupid.

Can not boot from backup.

Need OS X installer CD to restore you data, not a “hot backup”.

Is not incremental. One email to Entourage and thats 400MB of data that has to be backed up all over again. One pixel change to a 500MB .psd file, and thats 500MB to copy over again.

Backs up active files, such as downloads and files in the process of being saved.

I assure you, these issues will not be fixed for a long time. Tru incremental backups, maybe not ever. I guess good news for SuperDuper! and CCC.

I wrote previously about how the Finder in 10.x up was screwy in the way it dealt with long file names.

Looks like Apple almost heard me, as they fixed that bug, but only half way.

Here is how they used to deal with it, which was pretty piss poor:

And here is how it is dealt with in 10.5 Leopard:

I would like to say, nice effort. They truncate the file name in the center of the long file name, which is more than most would have done. Most would have chopped right off the end and just put in a “…”. Apple did the nice thing here, by giving you context to the file from the beginning and the end.

They just somehow forgot that there can be more than one level to a menu item. Why this is not built into every API Apple pushes out, so a developer need not even think about it, no idea, but it should be.

A few days later, I got an email reply. Kudos to them for replying. However, it would seem the Mexicans they have working in the stores have infiltrated their corporate offices as well (100% unedited):

Dear Jared:

First, allow me to apologize. Secondly, I would like to thank you for taking the time to contact us and share your comments. I am sorry to learn that your visit was not what you had expected it to be.

Our customers provide us with valuable input, which we use to improve our operations. As part of our commitment to our customers I have shared your comments with the regional office in your area as well as the owner of the SUBWAYR restaurant that you have visited.

Again, I appreciate you taking the time to contact us. SUBWAYR looks forward to your continued visits.
