When a loved one is deployed, we’re full of wishes: that he’ll be safe, that she’ll be home soon, that the
children will adjust to the separation. A wishing tree offers a concrete
reminder of the person who is away, while providing a place to collect wishes,
hopes, and prayers.

It’s easy to create a wishing tree
for your own home, classroom, family assistance center, church, or business.
Use some of these ideas or get creative on your own.

Miniature Wishing Tree

1. Select a small tree or plant
(artificial or real) or use branches supported by florist foam.

2. Cut lengths of ribbon.

3. Using a fabric pen, write your wishes on the ribbons and tie them to the
branches.

Bulletin Board Wishing Tree

1. Hang a bulletin board, cork board, or
heavyweight poster board on a wall.

2. Cut out a bare tree with several long branches using construction paper or
flannel. Tack, tape, or staple your tree to the bulletin board.

3. Cut out “wishing leaves” made of ribbon, paper, flannel, or faux
leaves or fruit, in any shape (leaves, ribbons, hearts, stars, ornaments, etc).
The leaves can be flat or three-dimensional or have flaps to cover/reveal the
wishes.

4. Have family members, students, or other participants write wishes, hopes,
and prayers on the wishing leaves and tack to the tree.

Box of Wishes

1. Select a box with a lid. Cut an opening
in the box top or use a lid that lifts off.

2. Decorate the box with photos of a person you are wishing for.

3. Write wishes on small pieces of paper or paper leaves and put into the box.

Jar of Wishes

1. Choose a large clear container with an
easy on/off lid, such as a large pickle jar or candy jar.

2. Decorate the jar with permanent marker, paint, or pasted paper or leave the
jar clear if you want to see the wishes.

3. Cut out colorful ribbons, paper leaves, stars, hearts, and other shapes and
write on your wishes.

4. Put the wishes in the jar by color or material type to create a pattern, or
randomly for a colorful display of wishes.

Wishing Tree Placemats

1. Color a picture of a tree onto a large
piece of paper slightly smaller than the placemat you want to make. Include
leaves on the tree. Include photos of your family around the tree.

2. Laminate the paper, leaving an edge around the paper for the lamination to
adhere to itself.

3. For reusable wishing tree placemats, use dry erase markers or other wipe-off
crayons or markers to write wishes on the leaves. Write new wishes at each
meal.

Styrofoam Wishing Tree

1. Begin with a Styrofoam cone, with the
flat edge down. Spray paint or decorate the cone.

2. Write wishes on ribbons or paper leaves and affix to tree with pins or pipe
cleaners.

Holiday Wishing Tree

1. Using your normal holiday tree, write
wishes on ribbons, paper ornaments, or other crafts and decorate with your
wishes and hopes for others.

2. Create a giving tree, decorating with wishes from others in need. Encourage
everyone to select a wish from the tree and make it come true!

Answer: myPay
is an online pay account management system that provides paycheck and tax
information for military members, retirees, annuitants, and numerous federal
civilian employees.

The system, created and maintained by the Defense Finance and Accounting
Service (DFAS), allows military personnel the capability of viewing and
printing their:

• Leave and Earnings Statements (LES)
• End-of-year W-2 Wage and Tax Statement Forms
• Army Student Loan Repayment Program (SLRP) Tax Forms

Other Benefits

In addition to viewing and printing documents, users can also:

• Start or change Direct Deposit.
• Change their tax withholding deductions.
• Stop or start hard-copy mailings of LES and W-2 forms.
• Enroll in the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP).
• Change or cancel their contribution percentage to TSP.

Although myPay is a valuable resource for all military
personnel, deploying servicemembers who don’t already have a myPay account may
want to place creating one at the top of their pre-deployment
checklist.

Buying vs Renting a Home

There are many advantages to buying a home (even short term).

• Pride of Ownership and possible Equity. When you pay rent, you don’t own anything. When you pay a mortgage, you increase your degree of ownership in your home with every payment. 

• Tax deductions. You can deduct mortgage interest as well as your property taxes. Uncle Sam doesn’t give renters this bonus. In addition, those who work from home may be eligible to take deductions for their home office and portions of utilities. 

• Creative control. So, you like dozens of pictures on the wall? Well, hammer away — they are your walls now. Go ahead and paint them mango! Wish you had another room? Go ahead and add one, it will more than likely add Value (Equity) as well. 

• Pet ownership. If you own your own home you decide what pets are best for you & your family. Most Landlords don’t allow or restrict pets to small or outside pets only and charge a “non-refundable” pet deposit. 

• Freedom to utilize your property any way you choose (within the law). If you own your home and want to have friends over or invite guests to stay with you, that’s your choice. Many rental agreements have clauses that prohibit guests and gatherings. 

Buying a home can be a very good investment — and let’s face it, you have to live somewhere. Historically, the Real Estate Market increases between 5 to 7 percent annually. With the current competitive Real Estate Market & the lowest Interest Rates we’ve seen in years, there has never been a better time to buy a Home.

Even if you’re only going to be at a specified location for 1 to 2 years, if you pay $1,000.00 per month rent for a year you’ve literally lost $12,000.00 plus the cost of any improvements you make to the property. Fort Sill National Cemetery in Elgin, Okla., was dedicated on Nov. 2, 2001. The Fort Sill National Cemetery was the second national cemetery to be constructed in Oklahoma and became the 120th national cemetery to be administered by the National Cemetery Administration. Fort Sill National Cemetery lies in southwestern Oklahoma, approximately 75 miles from Oklahoma City and five miles north of Lawton. Land for the national cemetery was transferred from the Department of the Army’s Ft. Sill Military Reservation in 1998.

The cemetery is situated on land that was once Indian Territory. A military reservation was staked out in January 1869 by Maj. Gen. Philip H. Sheridan and was formally established as Camp Wichita the following month. Sheridan later renamed the garrison as Fort Sill in honor of fellow West Point classmate, Brigadier General Joshua W. Sill, who died in the Battle of Stones’ River during the Civil War. Fort Sill’s mission was one of law enforcement for the expanding American frontier. The arrival of the Quohada Comanches to Fort Sill in June 1875 marked the end of Indian warfare of the south Plains.

In the 1890s, Apache Chief Geronimo and 341 other Apache prisoners of war were brought to Fort Sill by the government. Geronimo was granted permission to travel briefly with Pawnee Bill’s Wild West Show and also visited with President Theodore Roosevelt. Geronimo died of pneumonia at Fort Sill on Feb. 17, 1909, at the age of 83 and is buried in the post cemetery at Fort Sill. Lt. Hugh L. Scott instructed the remaining Apache prisoners of war on how to build houses, raise crops and herd cattle. Many spent the remainder of their lives at Fort Sill.

The last Native American lands in Oklahoma opened for settlement in 1901 and 29,000 homesteaders registered at Fort Sill for the land lottery during July. On August 6 of that year, the town of Lawton sprang up and quickly grew to become the third-largest city in Oklahoma. As of 2005, Lawton currently is the fourth largest city in Oklahoma, having fallen behind Norman in the last census. With the disappearance of the frontier, the mission of Fort Sill gradually changed from cavalry to field artillery. The first artillery battery arrived at Fort Sill in 1902 and the last cavalry regiment departed in May 1907.

The School of Fire for the Field Artillery was founded at Fort Sill in 1911 and continues to operate today as the world-renowned U.S. Army Field Artillery School. In 2007, the Fort Bliss Air Defense was added to Fort Sill, they both operate under one umbrella called the Fires Center of Excellence. At various times, Fort Sill has also served as home to the Infantry School of Musketry, the School for Aerial Observers, the Air Service Flying School and the Army Aviation School. Today the U.S. Army Field Artillery Center at Fort Sill remains the only active Army installation to continuously serve the Southern Plains since the Indian Wars.

Buffalo Soldiers Fort Sill Linda Jefferson

Founded by Gen. Phillip Sheridan during a winter campaign against the Southern Plains tribes in 1869, Ft. Sill became the home of the U.S. Field Artillery Center and School in 1911. The \”Buffalo Soldiers\” of the 9th and 10th cavalry were stationed here in the late 1870\’s and provided major assistance in the construction of the post. Many of the original structures are still in use and in mint condition.

The Old Post Quadrangle features historic homes, museum buildings and the Old Post Chapel.
Services have been conducted continuously in the Chapel since its founding in 1875. The museum\’s Visitor Center is located at the southeast corner of the quadrangel. Orginally designed to function as a warehouse, this building was used as Infantry barracks, a school for children and an Artillery classroom. Today, it houses an exhibits gallery and theater.

The Old Stone Corral was built in 1870 after a Kiowa horse stealing raid to protect livestock and
serve as a refuge for the garrison. Present day exhibts contain horse drawn vehicles, a replica of the Post Traders\’s Store, and blacksmithing. The Old Post Gift Shop is located on the south side of the corral. Flipper\’s Ditch, built by Lt. Henry O. Flipper, the first black West Point graduate, is another historic site you will want to visit.

Many ceremonies on Fort Sill are accompanied by the Fort Sill Half Section – the Army\’s last
horse-drawn field artillery unit. Half Section members dress in vintage uniforms and fire a 75mm
cannon.

The Fort Sill Museum has 26 historic buildings including seven with exhibits on the Frontier Army, Native Americans and Field Artillery. One of the these, the Old Post Guardhouse erected in 1873, is famous as the holding facility for Geronimo. It now houses exhibits commemorating the horse soldiers, foot soldiers and Native Americans of the Southern Plains.

The Cannon Walk includes historic field artillery weapons from around the world. The largest piece exhibited is Atomic Annie, the 280mm gun that fired the world\’s first atomic artillery round in 1953. Other displays include Missile Park chronicling the Army\’s missile program and a display of Operation Desert Storm artillery and weapons.

While on Post, visit Geronimos\’ Grave, the final resting place of the great Apache warrior. Other points of interest include the Apache and Comanche cemeteries. Native American notables such as Quanah Parker, Santanta and Satank are buried at Chief\’s Knoll in the Post Cemetery

Comanche National Museum & Cultural Center

Visitors can walk the grounds of this historic frontier army post and feel the atmosphere from the past while enjoying programs presented by the museum throughout the year. Exhibit facilities are open to the public including the Interpretive Center, a cavalry barracks furnished to 1875, the 1872 guardhouse, the Warrior’s Journey native American gallery and several others.

Historic Mattie Beal Home

The Historic Mattie Beal Home, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a 14 room Greek Revival style mansion constructed in 1909. In the land lottery of 1901, in which the federal government opened southwest Oklahoma for settlement, the second name drawn was Mattie Beal. This determined young woman from Wichita KS chose her 160-acre allotment south of the Lawton town site. Instant fame was hers and she received hundreds of marriage proposals but it was the local lumberyard owner Charles Payne who stole her heart; they married in 1902. (Also hosts group tours, wedding, luncheons & receptions.)

Museum of the Great Plains

The Museum features special collections and exhibits which spotlight the cultural and natural history of the Great Plains. The Red River Trading Post is a replica of the trading posts which existed in the region in the 1830s and 1840s that features a fortified log stockade and two-story trader’s cabin. The Red River Trading Post hosts a Spring Encampment in May and Fall Encampment in November.

The U.S. Army Field Artillery Museum tells the story of Artillery from 1775 to the present with over 70 guns and artillery pieces and numerous other artifacts from head gear and ammo to small arms and uniforms. The Museum was opened June 2, 2009. Previously, the Artillery Collection was part of the Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museum collection. Our collection includes a representation of uniforms from each era. We have added many new pieces and exhibits to peak the interest of any history or artillery buff.

Nye has been recognized as the best MWR library in the Army.  Nye has over 85,000 volumes of fiction, nonfiction, reference and research materials and an extensive information services program that includes internet/e-mail access computers and several superb CD-ROM resources. There are 2 Book returns, one on the North Side of the building and a Drive-Up Return on the South Side of the building.

With over 30 public use laptops and wifi internet access, the Nye Library also offers 2 copiers, a microfiche reader/printer and 6 study rooms available.  For the kids, there is Dial-a-Story at 580-442-4092, a story hour for children, and a play group.
