Thanks Doug for the recognition and support. Those of us working in the credit union industry want to offer innovative services that provide value to our members. However, in many cases, our credit unions are “held hostage” by limited functions/feature sets dictated by the third-party systems we use. This stifles creativity and innovation. I believe if we as an industry embrace the points you listed here in your post and challenge conventional thinking, great things can happen!

Furthermore, I think it’s safe to say that consumers expect credit unions to be a safe place to conduct their financial affairs. But, what they probably don’t expect is for us to be innovation leaders. Here at Vantage (and I know at Forum as well), we believe there is a way to deliver on both these points.

Great post, Doug! There is no doubt that we as humans can easily seek our comfort zones and accept average results. It takes a lot of discipline and self-motivation to continue to reach for higher standards. I’m fortunate to be on a team where everyone does their best to live by those higher standards!

Your story about making the varsity team is great. I as well love the game of basketball (even as it has been somewhat tarnished in this state as of late) and can relate to what you have to say. Even though your team lost in Regionals, it is pretty cool that you can say your squad went up against a New Castle team with one of the best Hoosier ball players of all time!

Doug,

Excellent post! My congratulations to your awesome team.

We too felt the pain of the unintended consequences. Our solution was somewhat similar. We went with modifying our monthly statements. Although there is much debate on this, our legal felt it was within the guidelines. For members on non-monthly payment frequencies we added their subsequent payment due dates at the bottom of each loan statement. We were able to get this out with our July statements and as a result, we received no phone calls from our members inquiring why this information was appearing on their statement.

We too are blessed with a very talented staff who were able to think outside the box. Given the slow reaction by the core processors (at least ours) to respond, I shutter to think how credit unions with no development staff were able to comply. Clearly, the crafters of this legislation did not think through the logistical nightmare this causes for so many. Otherwise, the dates for compliance would have been a little more realistic.
