Murdered by crime boss Gat Benson, Jim Corrigan returns to Earth as The Spectre, his soul forged with the spirit of God’s vengeance, bound to punish lawbreakers for 60 years.

9) Superman #1

7.5 Comics Guaranty Company (CGC) graded copy sold for$250,000 (only 44 copies exist)
Introduced in Action Comics #1 in 1938, Superman was the first superhero to get his own comic when Superman #1 was released in summer 1939. Detailing Superman’s origin story, his voyage from planet Krypton and adoption by the Kent family, one reason for the publication’s popularity was that it tapped into the experiences of immigrants striving, like their superhero, to settle and fit into the American way of life, as Jewish-American creators Jerry Siegel and Joseph Shuster had done.

8) Batman #1

9.0 CGC graded copy sold for $315,000 at a ComicLink auction in May 2010
First appearing in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939, Batman became an immensely popular character, mirroring the success of Superman, with the Caped Crusader eventually receiving his own comic in spring 1940. Bob Kane’s iconic creation was teamed up with his trusty sidekick Robin in Batman #1, which also introduced Catwoman and master criminal The Joker.

7) Captain America Comics #1

9.2 CGC graded copy sold at a ComicConnect auction for $343,057 in August 2011
Created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby during the start of WWII, Steve Rogers and his alter-ego Captain America first flung their shield into the comic book arena when Captain America Comics #1 was published in March 1941 by Timely Comics, later to become Marvel Comics. The first cover featured Captain America punching Hitler hard on his jaw, which may explain why it sold close to 1m copies.

6) Marvel Comics #1

Sold at auction for $367,000
Published in October 1939, Marvel Comics #1 introduced readers to both comic book writer Carl Burgos’ original version of The Human Torch and writer-artist Bill Everett’s Namor the Sub-Mariner, who is recognised as the first anti-hero in comic-lore. The issue was a runaway success, selling close to 900,000 copies, setting the pace for future Marvel publications.

5) Flash Comics #1

Sold at Heritage Auctions for $450,000 in March 2010
Published by All-American Publications (later merged into DC Comics) in Jan 1940, Flash Comics #1 introduces college student Jay Garrick and his alter-ego The Flash, created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Harry Lampert. It also features the first appearance of another of Fox’s co-creations, this time with artist Dennis Neville, the winged superhero Hawkman.

4) Detective Comics #27

8.0 CGC graded copy sold at Heritage Auctions for $1.07m in March 2010
Holy first appearance Batman! Here’s where it all started for Bruce Wayne and his alter-ego the Batman. Published in May 1939, Detective Comics #27 sees Commissioner Gordon and Batman trying to crack a murder case involving a chemical syndicate. At one point the Caped Crusader knocks a villain into a vat of acid, an action he repeats with grave consequences in a later storyline...

3) Amazing Fantasy #15

9.6 Near Mint CGC graded copy sold for $1.1m at a ComicConnect auction in March 2011
First published in August 1962, Amazing Fantasy #15 introduced Peter Parker and his alter-ego Spider-Man, created by comic book legends writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko. Setting a record for a Silver Age publication, the first comic featuring everybody’s favourite neighbourhood web-slinger has a striking cover collaboratively drawn by Ditko and Jack Kirby.

2) Action Comics #1

8.5 CGC graded copy sold for $1.5m at a ComicConnect auction in March 2010
Published in June 1938 by National Allied Publications, Action Comics #1 is the Holy Grail of comic books, introducing Superman to the world. Although possessing the power to lift a car in his first outing, Superman didn’t take flight until Action Comics #13, June 1939. Considering the original price of the comic was 10 cents, and creators Jerry Siegel and Joseph Shuster sold the rights to Superman for less than $200, this was a stellar investment.

9.0 CGC graded copy sold for $2.16m at a ComicConnect auction in November 2011
The story behind the copy of Action Comics #1 that became the world’s most expensive comic book is truly stranger than fiction. Previously owned by actor Nicolas Cage, it was stolen from his house by thieves in 2000, only to be recovered in an abandoned storage locker found in the San Fernando Valley in April 2011. A film about the curious incident, penned by Reno 911! scribes Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, is due to be produced by Lionsgate.

It’s still hard to believe Cage was actually going to play the Man of Steel in the Kevin Smith scripted/Tim Burton directed Superman Lives, until Warner Bros pulled the plug in 1998, perhaps mercifully?

Max Payne: Ready to take on a New World and New Generation

Since we last had the frozen frown of Max Payne slow-mo shooting his way through New York’s criminal underworld a lot has changed and many more of Rockstar’s memorable protagonists have come our way. We have moved to a new generation of consoles and have got to grips with the likes Grand Theft Auto IV’s cynical but sympathetic Niko Bellic, the true grit of Red Dead Redemption’s John Marston and most recently but unfortunately less memorably, the stern and straight-laced story of L.A Noire’s Cole Phelps – but now Max is back and he seems ready reclaim the mantle of our favourite dishevelled and down-on-his-luck character in Max Payne 3, finally released after a stutter at the starting blocks on May 18th.

In what has nearly been 10 years since Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne was released on the last generation of consoles, a lot more has changed other than Rockstar’s repertoire of movie-like protagonists, as whether we like it or not, what we have come to expect as gamers has evolved and the technology used to develop these blockbusters certainly has done so. Max Payne might be an old dog, but he’s going to have to learn some new tricks if Max Payne 3 is going to live up to the expectations of fans of old and newcomers to the series alike.

The Changes
Luckily, the first thing that is strikingly noticeable when looking at the screenshots, the trailers and all other available information is that a lot has changed for Max too. 8 years have passed in his life and we find his stock grimace etched even further into his profile – he’s put on some weight too and appears to be just a few more painkillers away from completely hitting rock bottom. In Max Payne 3, we feel all of this pain but also realise that amongst getting older and the hardship, Max is more brutal than ever before – and these two sides to the story, the pain of our protagonist and the pain he can inflict on others, is largely thanks to the staggering innovations that have been made by Rockstar in terms of gameplay and the animations of both Max and the scores of AI controlled enemies that you will meet around each corner.

The Features
Building upon the combination of NaturalMotion’s Euphoria technology and the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine, which worked so well in Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption, and utilising the extra scope afforded with a much more linear third-person shooter instead of an expansive sandbox title, Rockstar have tweaked every last animation so that each punch, kick and bullet can be felt with full effect from the screen and through your controller.

Since the previous iteration of Max Payne, games like the Uncharted series have set the mark for third-person shooters on our current generation of consoles, however still tend to fall flat when it comes to animations and actually capturing how our surroundings and whatever comes our way can affect us in real life.

Jump or roll Uncharted’s Nathan Drake forward into a brick wall and he will simply complete the motion against it, absolutely unaffected by the environment - and then follow that up by shooting an advancing enemy in the torso and he will spring back to life repeatedly as if he is absorbing each bullet like a sponge.

After just a few minutes battling your way through Max Payne 3’s São Paulo city streets and buildings, you’ll see and feel that this isn’t the case, because performing Max’s signature sideways Bullet Time jump into a wall will instead see his body crumpling agonisingly against it as it should, taking him longer to recover to his feet once he has hit the floor – and then shooting an enemy in the torso, leg, arm or shoulder will see them react accordingly – like a bullet has hit them instead of a piece of plastic (and don’t think for a second that this might make the game easier, because the same will happen to you).

Max Payne hasn’t been around for years, but we find him doing exactly what he did back on the last generation of consoles – redefining the genre once again – and that isn’t even mentioning the story, soundtrack or ability to wield two completely different weapons at once. Welcome back, Max.

Several Easy Changes You Can Make To Zombie Proof Your Home

It’s a fact of life that we all have to accept that sooner or later the dead will rise from their unquiet slumber, gather in great mobs and storm through your town, devouring the flesh of your neighbours who, in turn, will rise and continue the slaughter until only a few plucky survivors remain.

The question is, what will you do in the face of this terrifying inevitability? Curling up into a foetal position and crying is an option, but in the end that won’t help anyone. The truth is, your own real chance is to make sure that when the zombie apocalypse does arrive, you’re prepared.

Fortunately there are a few pretty straight forward things you can do to make your house safe from the encroaching horde. The key is to make sure that your home is fortified so that the undead can’t get in, while ensuring you’re able to preserve to your resources. This can be achieved with simple tips like:

Get Double Glazing
The first thing you need to understand about zombies is that they are very stupid creatures. They won’t be planning any strategies or cunning plans. A zombie’s thought process goes “See a thing. Does thing look like a person? If yes, walk towards it. If you reach thing, start biting.” This makes them extremely hard to negotiate or reason with but exceptionally easy to trick.

When the zombies see your windows that’s what they’re going to walk towards. They’ll probably lurch straight past the front door to get to them. For this reason it’s important that your windows are reinforced, so a strong, high quality set of double glazing will be invaluable.

This also means that when you send scavenging parties out for supplies you can lure zombies over to the double-glazed windows, while your scavengers slip out the front door unnoticed.

Secure Your Doors
Of course, sometimes the zombies are going to notice survivors coming in and out of the house, and being creatures of no imagination when they get a door slammed in their face they’re just going to keep knocking at it trying to get.

Ensure you’ve got a decent set of locks on the door, and possibly a chain so that if you get ambushed opening the door you and your family aren’t instantly doomed. Make sure the door is a good fit for the doorway, with no pesky cracks along the edges a zombie could get its fingers through.

If there are gaps, particularly around the bottom of the door, try fitting a draught excluder. Remember, even the tiniest scratch can infect somebody, so take no chances.

Avoid Death From Above
According to all the best zombie movies, the undead are incapable of flight. However real life isn’t always like the movies, so are you really willing to take that chance?

A good way to protect your family from aerial zombies is to install some good quality loft insulation. The fibreglass is extremely unpleasant to the touch, so as they try to claw their way in the zombies will get really irritated and umm.... wander off...

Okay, you know how last year the CDC did a blog post about zombie preparedness that was actually designed to trick you into being prepared for other disasters? I was sort of trying to do the same thing but with energy efficiency. So like, instead of keeping the zombies out, it’s keeping the heat in sort of thing? Because you know, global warming is like a real apocalypse, and energy bills can rise like zombies from the grave... It’s not a perfect metaphor! Okay?

So, get some double glazing, insulate your loft, use draught excluders.
And buy a shotgun. You can’t go wrong with a shotgun.

Both the term geek and the term nerd have different starts. At first, geek was meant as an insult, but then became a positive saying during the time of the circus. Dr. Seuss actually brought around the term nerd in 1954 with his own original quote.

Someone who is a geek can have a lot of knowledge on a single subject, or can have a little knowledge over a wide variety of subjects. Stereotypes suggest that geeks carry a Mac computer while nerds might carry a PC. The survey suggests that nerds are more knowledge based than geeks, while geeks blend in with the in crowd slightly more. Stereotypes often suggest that while nerds are big fans of games, geeks are fans of gadgets.

An Introduction to Reading Sheet Music – It's Not So Hard!

Reading music is one of those skills that lots of people want to be able to do. It's creative, challenging and it impresses almost everyone while helping to develop your brain. At once it's 'cool' and it's 'cultured' and without being able to read music you will be missing out on a huge aspect of life.

The good news is, that reading music isn't actually as hard as you might at first have thought, and is actually very logical. In fact it's easy enough that you can understand the basics here, so that's what we're going to do.

Understanding Sheet Music
The very basic way to understand reading music is that as the notes go upwards, so the pitch increases. Sheet music is essentially written as five lines, with the notes then drawn on top of these, so if the note is on the very top this is a high note, and if it's on the very bottom it's relatively low.

Now when you're playing the piano you have two sets of these lines with different 'cleffs' - that's because you can play to sets of notes at once with your left and right hands, but for other instruments such as guitar or violin there's no need for more than one set of bars.

Now what you also need to understand is that there are 7 main notes, or 'tones'. These 8 notes are labelled, 'A, B, C, D, E, F, G'. If you look at a piano you'll notice there are lots more than 7 notes, but this is because the notes then repeat themselves - go one tone higher than G and you get to 'A' again. The only difference here is the 'octave' but the note is technically the same as the lower A, just higher. Normally you will play across just two octaves.

Now these notes will be placed both on and between the lines. The bottom line of the treble cleff for your information is 'E'. Now the line about that is 'G', and the space in between it is 'F'. So far so easy.

Sharps and Flats
The next thing you need to notice when looking at a piano is the black notes. These are 'semi tones' which are halfway between two tones. So halfway between C and D is a note called C# (C Sharpe) or Bb (B flat) - those are the same note just written differently.

Reading this on the music is rather simple - they are denoted by either a # sign or a 'b'. If you have a C then and it has a # next to it, you play the black note to the right – C#. If it has a 'b' next to it you play the one to the left which is Cb or B#. (Or at least you would - just to confuse matters there is no B# or Cb - only certain notes have semi tones between them).

Timing
This is the basics of playing a tune, and now to understand the timing you simply need to look at how the notes are written. If they are a black dot with a straight line up or down next to them and a quiff then this is your basic single note. If the notes are empty and white but still have the timing, then you have a note that lasts for two beats. If it's black and it has a dot after it then that's three beats, and if it's empty with no stick next to it then it's 4 beats. Meanwhile, if you have multiple black notes with tails (crotchets) connected together along the top by a slanted bar, then these are played quickly to fit a single note and are called quavers or semi quavers depending on how many there are.

Five Of The Best Summer Holiday Films

If anyone’s still harbouring hopes of a long hot summer in England then I take my Kiss Me Quick hat off to you sir or madam because you are a beautiful optimist that doesn’t appear to know the meaning of the word drizzle.

Of course, there will be patches of clement weather where the possibility of camping flits into our mind or there may be a break in the clouds for long enough to cobble together a quick picnic, however these moments are usually few and far between and tend to have the life expectancy of a May fly.

So, what to do on a summer’s day when you can’t go outside because it’s raining? Ah, watch a film on TV. Oh no, wait! That’s right, even your faithful servant TV is against you this year as wall to wall Euro football, Wimbledon and Olympic Games coverage is guaranteed to take precedence over any other form of televisual entertainment.

It’s up to you to legally download, order online or rent from Blockbusters (if they’re still going) a film to help you get through the dark days from June to August.

And, in the spirit of summers past, I’ve decided to share with you my very own top five list of holiday movies that are all guaranteed to help you forget about throwing frisbees, eating ice creams and Fatima Whitbread.

Long live the summer!

Summer holiday (1963)

Follow a young Cliff Richard and pals as they attempt to escape the English summer by commandeering a double decker bus and heading for St Tropez. This is a feel-good, sing-along-a-dingdong of a 60s flick, and from opening up a continental world of cycling holidays and rural French breaks to listening to Cliff and the Shadows belting out some absolute classics, this is one film that’s guaranteed to get you smiling this summer.

Dirty Dancing (1987)

Summer loving never happened this fast and as the lustful romance between Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey blossoms as eminently as a bunch of carnations we watch with hands on hearts as Baby finally gets her man. This is the quintessential teen-chick-flick and what more could you wish for on a rainy summer’s day than to be stuck in doors having the time of your life with Jen and Paddy?

The Lost Boys (1987)

Take a pair of brothers, a recently divorced mother and an Alaskan dog named Nanook and deposit them in the fictional murder capital of America, Santa Carla. What you have here my friends is the recipe for one of the ultimate 80s teen movies and a handbook as to what to do in the summer holidays if you don’t live in Britain. Vampires, a fab soundtrack and Jami Gertz, what’s not to love?

Stand by Me (1986)

During the summer holidays, four young friends hear about the body of a boy who’s been hit by a train and left abandoned in the woods. What else is there left to do other than undertake a coming of age journey that leads the boys along the train tracks on their way to adventure holidays beyond their wildest dreams. If it’s cold outside and you’re sick to death of sports then give yourself the first few bars of the Ben E King song of the same name and it will be September in no time at all.

Withnail and I (1987)

Not necessarily based in the summer months but certainly centring around two friends going on a holiday jaunt, Withnail and I has become a cult classic. Based around two actors leaving London to take refuge in the Lake District at Withnail’s uncle’s cottage you might be forgiven for thinking that all that’s left to happen is country strolls and early nights however, after you watch this you may be forced to think again.

How DNA Manipulation Will Cause The Zombie Apocalypse

Mary Shelley warned us years ago what could happen with her work of fiction, "The Modern Prometheus", which is better known as the novel "Frankenstein". Tampering with nature by unorthodox scientific means can produce results that may not be what the scientists intended. Is there a world of unsuspecting humans waiting for a virus to instruct their genes to mutate and pass on the virus to other hosts? The zombie apocalypse that has frightened science fiction aficionados and thrill seekers at the horror movies may already be occurring as I write these words.

Science Making Zombies
A wrong turn on a scientific trail could already by in the works. Genetic tampering with the manipulation of DNA in the insect kingdom has created zombie caterpillars. Scientists have injected a baculovirus into the gypsy moth. These mutated moths then go about their life cycle and become a genetically engineered caterpillar. These caterpillars carry within their genes a program that will spread the virus, which is also known as LdMNPV, far and wide. The caterpillars carry this virus to heights in trees where their body decomposes and becomes liquid. The liquid is them dispersed and spread by rainfall to other gypsy moths to pass on the infection to their caterpillar changelings. This has already taken place.

This is not a work of fiction. The scientific research for this scientific tampering is documented in the pages of "Science, The World's Leading Journal of Original Scientific Research, Global News and Commentary".

Zombie Apocalpyse: More Than Fiction?
While watching Barbara run from the reanimated dead with their shuffling gaits may send a pleasant shiver down our spines, would living in a world where mankind has forever been effected by the infected be quite as entertaining? George R. Romero and Stephen King may thrill us with their horror tales and The Walking Dead may be one of the best shows on television, but living in a world where a virus is spread by rain would be a real horror brought to live.

It gives a whole new meaning to the term "acid rain". It also brings to mind our mothers warning of never venturing out in the rain without proper attire. But will umbrellas, galoshes and rain coats really protect us from the far reaching effects of a virus spread by falling rain? It could leach into the water supplies and food sources. Humankind may already be suffering from the effects of this experimentation. The next time you wonder why a climber scales to the peak of a mountaintop, ask yourself, "Is it in his DNA?"

Three Dumbest Theories About The Environment

Climate sceptics don’t actually mind that we mock, belittle and ignore them. It feeds into that narrative they have that they’re the brave Galileo standing up to the massive, dogmatic church accusing them of heresy for their daring new ideas. Of course, there’s a few problems with this metaphor. For starters, instead of a single, monolithic church opposing the climate sceptics, there’s that vast majority of scientists, who come from a diverse range of background and have all sorts of disagreements and conflicting interests and yet somehow, are pretty much all able to agree that mankind has been causing global warming, because that’s what the evidence says. While on the side of the small, maverick group telling truth to power, there’s Fox News, huge chunks of the Republican Party and the entire fossil fuels industry.

Still, even among these crazy mavericks there are some theories that make you spit out your coffee and go “Huh?”

The Real Reason Behind Global Warming: Sunspots!

It’s got to the point where it’s pretty hard to ignore the fact that the climate is getting hotter, icecaps are melting, and things that climate scientists expected to happen... are happening. So really the only argument you can make, if you don’t want to give up driving a monster truck on the school run every morning, is that it’s not people who are causing it.

So it must be something natural. It also helps if it’s something a bit mysterious that most non-scientists don’t understand.

Like sunspots!

The biggest endorsement of this idea came in 1991 when Eigil Friis-Christensen, the director of the Danish National Space Centre, put out a study that demonstrated a correlation between global warming and sunspot cycles. He followed this up in 1998 with another study, working with Henrik Svensmark, that said there was a link between global warming, sunspots and cosmic rays.

As happens with real science, other scientists have looked at Friis-Christensen’s study, found possible flaws in it, and attempted to reproduce his results without those flaws. Except it turns out that once the flaws in the studies were removed, so was the correlation between sunspots and global warming.

One thing that even the most hardened climate nutboxes should be able to agree on is that oil exists in finite amounts. Surely this isn’t something we have to argue about?

Welcome to the theory of Abiotic Oil. This is the theory that Carbon Monoxide and Hydrogen Gas, rising up from the Earth’s core to react with zirconium-containing minerals, magically transforming into oil.

This is great because it means, A: Oil’s never going to run out! Whoopee! And B: Creationist Climate Change Deniers can finally ignore that whole difficult “Fossil” bit in “Fossil Fuels”.

Unfortunately oil companies haven’t been able to find a single oil well using the implications of this theory so... it might not be all that.

And One From The Environmentalists: Aliens Will Kill Us For Not Recycling

In the interests of journalistic balance, I believe it’s important to include at least one pro-green nutbox theory. And for everyone who read the sun spots theory and said “Ha! That whacky Danish space agency! You’d never get a real country’s space agency coming up with a theory like that!”- This one is from NASA.

Last April they released a study called “Would Contact with Extraterrestrials Benefit or Harm Humanity? A Scenario Analysis”. In this “Analysis” scientists argued that aliens might launch a pre-emptive strike against the Earth to prevent us reaching a point where we’re too difficult to destroy. The aliens would be able to spot that we were becoming more advanced because “our expansion is changing the composition of Earth’s atmosphere (e.g. via greenhouse gas emissions), which therefore changes the spectral signature of Earth. While it is difficult to estimate the likelihood of this scenario, it should at a minimum give us pause as we evaluate our expansive tendencies.”

Unlike most scientific theories, which comes from observing phenomena and using those observations to deduce hypothesis which can be tested with further observation, or the scientific theories used by climate change deniers, which comes from wishing really hard, this theory comes from watching classic 1951 science fiction movie, The Day The Earth Stood Still.

And it’s still more likely than the idea that oil is a renewable resource.

As comic book buffs we are inherently biased and always want our favorite superhero to come out on top in every single one of these parallel universe fights; or else we would dutifully throw the toys out of the pram. Mobile spy is the closest we’ve come to personally experiencing any quasi superpower; however, the X-Ray vision is set to change all that…

Frequently asked question
Comic book statisticians – and by that we mean blokes who have way too much time to spare – have revealed that “The Hulk vs. Superman” tops the chart in terms of the most frequently contested imaginary superhero combats. Hence, settling this particular dispute has become a life-defining question for some of us. Now, since none of us would ever personally experience the superpowers – although we’d love to believe that we would – that these superheroes flaunt all the time, it has always been a question of one opinion stacked against the other. Thankfully, Kenneth O, PhD, professor of electrical engineering – and not really a comic book fanatic from what we’ve learnt – at University of Texas, has come up with the solution that would once and for all settle the fight between The Hulk and Superman, conclusively.

X-Ray vision for cell phone cameras
Dr Kenneth and his crew have designed a chip that allows mobile phone cameras to spy into adjacent rooms by seeing through walls. These “mobile spy” cameras would allow us to see through wood, plastic, paper and yes, the human body as well. Dr Kenneth has basically taken a nosedive into the electromagnetic spectrum and conjured up something that involves one of its unused ranges and links it with the terahertz band of the spectrum. And while it does give privacy a good old pounding, it gives our lot the decisive brain fodder.

Through this technological marvel, ladies and gentlemen, we’d get the feel of X-Ray vision through our cell phone cameras and we’d be walking in the footsteps of some of the most renowned fictional characters. Some of these include, Ralph Hinkley, Ray from Buster, Luxray, “Mad-Eye” Moody and oh yes, the man himself Superman!

The clincher
How do you decide who’s stronger between one who sneezed to destroy a galaxy and the other who destroyed a meteor twice the size of earth with a single punch? Superman has the ‘sun’ card, The Hulk has the collective rage of 12368 billion mother-in-laws; Superman has the flight and speed and The Hulk has the healing factor – you just couldn’t separate the two of them.

While the aforementioned characteristics, and a myriad of others, seem to more or less even things out, Superman’s X-Ray vision could just be the clincher. Once we get hold of these X-Ray vision cell phones, we – the comic book community – would be as close to personally experiencing that particular ‘superpower’ as possible, and hence, we’d be in a much position to gauge Superman’s lead – or lack thereof – over The Hulk.

The researchers are putting a 4-inch limit to the distance of penetration through the camera, for obvious privacy reasons. However, even that distance should suffice in monitoring the required effect and settle the question that for ages has split humanity to two distinct – and yet equally inhabited – pools.

Perfectionism has three fatal flaws. One, you spend a disproportionate amount of time doing one task and falling behind on all other tasks. Two, you overdo something and pass the point when it was just right. Three, you exhaust yourself and frustrate everyone who has to work with you.

Nancy from The Craft

The Craft is a great film about modern day witches who can only get their powers strong enough by forming a group of four. They all start out as close friends, but Nancy, who dresses as goth as it gets, starts to become quite mean, and seems most interested in making sure that she becomes the most powerful witch. Her evil knows no bounds, and by the end of the film, she's truly gone mental. But her gothic look is one you won't forget quickly.

Lydia from Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice was directed by Tim Burton, already known for creating quirky, gothic movies. The film is about a couple who died but still 'haunt' the house that they owned, and try to get rid of the new owners. The character Lydia is a moody teenage goth who discovers the ghosts, but being who she is, is not scared at all. Unfortunately, neither are her unbearable parents who try to hatch a plan to use the ghosts as a way to make money. Lydia is a strong force in the film and a great gothic character to relate to.

Wednesday Adams

It was going to be between Wednesday and Morticia from the Adams Family, as to who would make the list. Morticia Adams is so beautifully gothic and elegant, but Wednesday has the perfect mix of gothicness and unwavering misery to make that dark soul even darker. She enjoys taking revenge on silly girly girls who pick on her, and experimenting with torture methods; a true child goth. These were very funny films, which made the gothic genre a little bit more open and accessible.

Eric Draven

Eric Draven was the main character in the crow, who comes back from the dead to avenge the deaths of himself and his girlfriend. He was the ultimate goth, and the film and his character is still very much a favourite among the gothic community. The soundtrack to the film added to the dark atmosphere, and solidifying Eric Draven as a sort of goth God.

Edward Scissorhands

He might not be a real human, but he still looks goth - and his awesome character and from this superb film therefore makes the list. He is strangely attractive, with his wild black hair and tight fitting goth clothes. Top marks go to the kooky Tim Burton for yet another awesome dark film, and creating a wonderful, naive and vulnerable gothic character. And everyone wants to dress as Edward Scissorhands at Halloween parties!

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that an epically proportioned, terrifying, apocalyptic, world-ending catastrophe is about to occur. Forget about water scarcity and global warming; did you know that there are an estimated 389 billion dead people on the planet Earth?! Do you have any idea what that means?!

Obviously, it implies that the dead outnumber the living by about 55 to 1, and with those kind of odds, and with the oblivious nutjobs we have running our national defense initiatives (who haven’t answered a single one of my letters), we pretty much don’t stand a chance in hell of coming out on top in the impending zombie apocalypse. So if you have even half a brain in your head, then you’ll know like I do that the shit is about to hit the fan on Dec. 21st, just like the Mayans predicted in their fancy calendar, which just so happens to be the most accurate one ever created.

Bulk Buying Freeze Dried Food
This one ought to be fairly obvious. If you are going to be living in a bunker for the next half-century, you’re going to need something to eat. Freeze dried foods are a perfect solution. They are light, compact, and have a long shelf life. Just add water and you are ready to consume the nutrients you’ll need to keep combating the living dead.

Also, buying in bulk is a great way to cut down on costs and to fill up that storage pantry in a hurry, because––let’s face it––you don’t have much time. But keep in mind when buying that the typical bagged dehydrated foods have a much shorter shelf life (about 7 years) than the canned variety, some of which can keep for upwards of 25 years.

For some of us, staying put and hunkering down in a bunker just isn’t a viable option. So if you need to be on the move, you will need compact meals that take no time to prepare. First, you will need to have plenty of water on hand to rehydrate your food with, so factor that into your planning. Secondly, dehydrated foods are more expensive than, for example, wet canned foods, so you will be making a big investment by buying them. It is probably best to keep supplies of about half canned, half dehydrated foods in your bunker pantries––that way you can have a bit of variety, save a bit of water, and cut costs. The last, however, shouldn’t be too much of a concern: everyone knows that the world economy is on the verge of collapse and that money will be completely worthless after the apocalypse comes.

Not only Angels & Airwaves is definitely a band that is worth listening to, being the result of the artictic collaboration of four accomplished musicians such as Tom DeLonge (from Blink-182), David Kennedy (from Boxcar Racer), Matt Wachter (from 30 Seconds To Mars) and Ilan Rubin (from Lostprophets and Nine Inch Nails), but also the version of 'Surrender' in today's video is... well, yes... (like it says in the title of this post)... a slow-motion one.

Perthshire - Offering A Piece Of Scotland For Everyone

Once seen as the biggest county in Scotland (hence it’s name the ‘Big County’), Perthshire may have seen a slow decline in popularity over the last five or six decades due to the development boom within cities such as Edinburgh and Glasgow in nearby counties, but for those who care to take a trip to Perthshire today, they soon know all too well just how fantastic a county it actually is.

Historic Perth
Take a look at the county’s major city, Perth, as an example. It has a number of points of historical importance. The city was once the capital city of Scotland, largely because of its royal association to the city’s involvement in the entire country’s economic development (due to its railway links in the 19th century, it proved to be a primary transport hub for the importing and exporting of various industries), and it’s still possible to see the long lasting influence history has had on the city.

On a similar note but moving away from the city, you can sample a range of stunning architectural delights, such as Scone Palace, a Grade A listed building made of red sandstone that is nothing short of awe-inspiring - it offers a fantastic day out for all the family, as the grounds, with maze, are open to the public - and Blair Castle, built in the early 13th century and which is fascinating both in terms of its somewhat simplistic design and the many historical souvenirs and memorabilia on show inside.

Of course, although Perthshire does have a vast and exciting history, there’s an array of other sights and attractions to take in if you’re looking for something different. The county’s natural beauty in the form of its many mountains and glens is a prime example.

Mountains and Festivals
Home to one of the Scottish Highlands’ tallest mountains, Ben Lawers, which stands a staggering 3,983 feet high and Scotland’s longest fully enclosed glen in Glen Lyon, which runs for almost 35 miles, Scotland is known for its beautiful landscapes and Perthshire has arguably some of the best examples of it.

And let’s not forget the area’s culture - head to Perth in the spring and you can sample the annual Festival of the Arts. If you have to visit later on in the year, there’s a number of theatres, museums and art galleries, including the ever popular Perth Museum and Art Gallery, a 190 year old building, available for you to enjoy.

Three Memorable Stage-to-Film Adaptations

Hollywood film makers have been quick to capitalise on the Broadway and West End success of theatre productions by rolling out movie versions on a regular basis for decades now.
Some adaptations do well at the box office - some flop in dramatic fashion!

Here are three of the more successful stage-to-film adaptations to have gone from the theatre to the big screen in recent years.

The Woman in Black (2012)
Budget: $15million. Grossed: $123+million
Demand for Woman in Black tickets both at the theatre and the cinema has been high off the back of Daniel Radcliffe’s critically-acclaimed performance in the 2012 release. The Englishman was always going to be in the spotlight in what marked his first movie role since the end of the Harry Potter franchise. Radcliffe thrived under the pressure as he delivered a fantastic performance in a film that produces its fair share of twists and turns as the eerie goings on at Eel Marsh House come to light. Mamma Mia! (2008)
Budget: $52million. Grossed: $609million
Confession time – who knows most of the words to pretty much every song featured in Mamma Mia! the movie?!? Yes, that’s probably most of us, unless you’ve been living on a different planet. Even if you haven’t watched the highest-grossing musical film of all time, you’ll probably still be able to sing-a-long to your heart’s content as the likes of James Bond star Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Meryl Streep prance around on the Greek island of Kalokairi trying to work out who’s the father of bride-to-be Sophie. It’s cheesy fun if nothing else, even if this isn’t exactly your favourite genre.

Chicago (2002)
Budget: $45million. Grossed: $306million
“Give ‘em the old razzle dazzle” goes the well-known line from Chicago’s most-famous song and the likes of Richard Gere, Renée Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones certainly did that as the film version won no fewer than six Oscars in 2003, including the awards for the Best Picture, Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design. Zellweger and Zeta-Jones star as the leading lights as they fight it out to make the headlines and stay alive in 1920s America.

19 Types of Christians [Infographic]

What do you think of when you think of a Christian? Do you picture somebody in a suit and tie voicing a prayer in King James English? Doctor Who Spotted in New York

'Doctor Who' is one of the longest running science-fiction series originating from the United Kingdom to date. In a nutshell, the television show documents the adventures of one Time Lord, an ancient humanoid race, the Doctor, traveling with an assistant referred as a companion inside the time traveling spacecraft TARDIS.

The science-fiction show is so popular that the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff, Wales, hosted the first official convention this year in a weekend in March. The convention attracted fans from as far away as Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. Matt Smith, the current Doctor, and Karen Gillan, the departing companion Amy Pond, attended the convention to meet fans from all over the world according to BBC.

Previously showcased in London, the Doctor Who Experience will exhibit sets, props and memorabilia from the popular show in Cardiff Bay later this year according to BBC News. Based on the London attendance, the Doctor Who Experience is expected to draw the attention of up to 250,000 visitors per year.

Scientific Spinoffs
Similar to any science-fiction work, the show is inspirational to research scientists. According to BBC, Dundee University researchers have created their own version of the Doctor's sonic screwdriver, which is a handheld device capable of opening doors, performing medical scans and remotely controlling other objects. However, Dundee University's device, which uses ultrasound to lift and rotate a disc in a cylinder of water, will be used for medicine. Researchers are optimistic that their device will be instrumental in future medical applications.

Series 7 in the Works
No longer an in-progress concept or rumor, 'Doctor Who' is currently in production for Series 7 with Matt Smith returning as The Doctor. Series 6 ended in the latter half of 2011. Per tradition, the producers aired the Christmas special "The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe" on December 25, 2011. As for in-studio production, 'Doctor Who' will be moving to a new facility in Roath Lock nearby Wales Millennium Centre.

According to Chuck Foster's post on doctorwhonews.net, production for the new series began in February this year. 'Doctor Who' crew filmed at a private home on location in Penarth, Wales, as Amy and Rory's home. Arthur Darvill (companion Rory Williams) and Karen Gillan filmed scenes with guest star Mark Williams of 'Harry Potter' fame as Ron Weasley's father Arthur Weasley at the home of Grace Jenkins who posted updates on Twitter. Additionally, in March, the crew filmed in Spain for the third episode with a Wild West theme.

Recently this month, Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill acted in scenes for the fifth episode of Series 7. Best of all, the 'Doctor Who' cast caused joy for fans in the borough of Manhattan in New York City during their shoot. Accompanying the lead stars in New York City was Producer and lead writer Steven Moffat. Filming occurred in East Manhattan, Central Park and Times Square.

The Parting of Old Friends
Unfortunately, Moffat announced the departure of Amy Pond and Rory Williams recently. Thus, 'Doctor Who' will have a new companion played by Jenna-Louise Coleman starting on the sixth episode, the Christmas special airing around Christmas this year. According to BBC production shots uploaded to the 'Doctor Who' Web site, the Daleks will return in Series 7 as major foes. Additionally, an approximately minute-long preview of Series 7 is available on the official 'Doctor Who' Web site.

Later this August or September in Chicago, 'Doctor Who' cast and crew will find out if they win awards or not for three episodes nominated for the Hugo Awards' Best Presentation-Short Form category.

Tune in later this year for a blockbuster, maybe final, adventure of 'Doctor Who' on BBC One in the United Kingdom. For overseas viewers, check your local listings for broadcasters of 'Doctor Who.'

Some of the popular vehicles to have been used in the 70s include Ford Custom 500, Honda ATV, and Mercedes-Benz W115. The films in the 80s saw vehicles like Lotus Espirit Turbo, Ford LTD, etc. The vehicles used in the 90s included BMW Z8, BMW R1200 motorcycle. Some of the recently used vehicles in Bond movies were Aston Martin DB3, Ford Mondeo and Volvo S40T5.
