Months of planning came to life in a defining week of elite youth football, as the 2025 VW Vaya Cup winners travelled to the United Kingdom for their international tour.

On Saturday, 14 March 2026, we hosted a powerful morning of learning, development, and community impact, as the Discovery x JPSFA Coaches Course brought together a passionate group of grassroots coaches committed to growing the game at Montrose Primary School.

Running from 08:30 to 12:00, the session created a focused yet energetic environment where knowledge-sharing met practical application – all with one goal in mind: strengthening football development at its foundation.

The clinic saw coaches divided into smaller working groups, allowing for more personalised and impactful learning. Each group rotated through key technical pillars of the game:

• Goalkeeping fundamentals
• Defensive structure and organisation
• Attacking principles and movement

This format ensured that every participant received hands-on guidance across all core areas, equipping them with tools they can take directly back into their own teams and communities.

What set the session apart was its strong emphasis on real-time application.

Young players from local primary schools joined the clinic, transforming the morning into a live training environment. Coaches were able to immediately implement what they had learned – testing ideas, refining techniques, and engaging directly with players.

Former combat sports champions, Dino Bagattin and Hekkie Budler, joined forces to establish Nice Guys Management. 

A key motivation behind their partnership was a shared desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. In 2025, Dino and Hekkie introduced a self-defense programme across Alexandra’s six high schools, aimed at empowering young girls with practical skills to protect themselves.

Girls in Alexandra face heightened risks due to structural poverty, overcrowding, gender-based violence (GBV), substance abuse, and limited access to healthcare and education. These challenges contribute to ongoing cycles of vulnerability, including high teenage pregnancy rates and increased exposure to crime. Through their programme, Dino and Hekkie visited schools in Alexandra to demonstrate and teach self-defense techniques, equipping participants with the confidence and ability to respond in dangerous situations.

By December 2025, the first phase of the programme had been successfully completed, with over 150 girls participating enthusiastically. The initiative will continue into 2026, where Dino and Hekkie will reach and train an additional 100 girls.

“Dino and I are determined to teach girls how to protect themselves, with Dino focusing on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and me incorporating boxing. The girls love it so much that several attend sessions at different schools, not just their own. Dino has also invited them to train at his gym free of charge.” – Hekkie Budler.

Overall, this initiative reflects Dino and Hekkie’s ongoing commitment to uplifting the Alexandra community by providing young girls with essential self-defense skills, confidence, and support. This December visit blended elite Premier League results, international academy collaboration, and deeply moving community impact sessions powered by the Leeds United Foundation.

South Africa Meets Yorkshire: Kaizer Chiefs Academy Crossover

A special highlight was the crossover with the Kaizer Chiefs Academy, who were in the UK on a pre-season tour.

Their visit included fixtures against the Leeds U21 Academy boys – a brilliant exchange of cultures, methodologies and ambition. Seeing young South African talent test themselves against English opposition reinforced something we believe strongly at Forwardzone:

The AMT x Leeds United Foundation Pan-Disability Session

One of the most powerful moments of the trip came at the AMT x Foundation pan-disability activation.

Children played football from an international lad playing on crutches as a single leg amputee, some living with cerebral palsy, some on the autism spectum and other across a wide spectrum of disabilities. And they played with joy.

The session, supported by club ambassadors and the Foundation, wasn’t about limitation. It was about ability. Courage. Confidence.

Huge respect to the Leeds United Foundation and their partners such as AMT for consistently leading in this space. Their work proves that football isn’t just inclusive – it can be transformative.

As Lucas reflected afterwards:

What began as weekly fixtures turned into a powerful showcase of talent, discipline, and unity as 12 primary schools from Alexandra competed in the boys and girls under-13 divisions for ultimate bragging rights.

But beyond the goals, tackles, saves and celebrations, this event represented something much bigger: a platform where youth potential is taken seriously, and where sport becomes a catalyst for wellness, exposure, confidence, and opportunity.

For the young players, the Discovery Alex Schools League isn’t just a once-off tournament – it’s a structured, reputable football ecosystem they proudly belong to.

• Every school gets a fair and equal opportunity
• No walkovers exist – every match is guaranteed
• Fields are booked and prepared professionally
• Young athletes are exposed to real competition formats
• Coaches, teachers, and staff play active mentorship roles

This consistency has given Alexandra’s children something many grassroots systems struggle to guarantee: respect for the game and respect for themselves as young athletes.
