Hi Blog family!
I found a little piece from my diary, hope you can identify or get a lesson from my thoughts, YOU are DIVINE and have Purpose in your life! xo

"If someone had just had a bank account for me when I aged out. Not one penny just a transfer to a girls home in NYC. Turned out to be my greatest blessing. Although I did not have a bank account, being placed in Bedford was the best thing that happened to me. I received an education I would have never gotten in Brooklyn at that time, I even went to private school twice, (until I got kicked out for calling headmaster a name I can't repeat). I was young, and did not know it was ok to be the only black girl, in most of the school. I have no regrets but I would have taken an even greater path had I stayed in private school, as I was a visual learner and it took my other school until middle school to figure it out!

I say to you that are still in group homes or foster homes, stack your money! If you get $15 a week for allowance, put away $2 at least! It seems small but if you save every week for years...it adds up! Collect bottles and cans, pick up pennies, put it in the bank! Oh, you don't have a bank account? What? Get your counselor to take you and get a bank account, you need proof of who you are. I suggest IF you can ask your social worker to help you get your birth certificate and social security card, it is ID that you will always need for work or applying for a passport- yes, you will travel out of the country one day JUST so you can see what else is in the universe for YOU to see and experience!

Just sharing my thoughts, I will continue, forgive me taking SO long to post, I have been a busy gal, running FKU, doing stand-up comedy, hosting a cable show and writing 7 screenplays..lol at once, I am all over the place! BUT I know where I am going and you should to!
Write out your dreams, commit to them and SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!! xo

Hi Blog family!

I know, its been a minute, or two, or three, ok its been months! I am a comedian and sometimes, I have to share a laugh.
The Fundraiser Nov 4th was a success, many thanks to our sponsors, donors, Board members, interns Tatiana and Quiana and our volunteers; Esteban and Nicole and over 81 of you who came out to support our auction and comedy night fundraiser! Success!

I am happy to report, I have been working hard with my board members to get donors so that we can provide gift boxes in December and scholarships in May!

Let me say when I first came to my little town after living in Brooklyn..in my home then group home/orphanage (they did not call them group homes in the 60's...)

I went from people that looked like me, to people that looked more like my grandpa! Lucky for me I didn't know what racism was, nor would I have cared, as I treated you, how you treated me, no color asked..(lol) to make a LONG story short, I LOVE my town! When each of us reach out for help, we silently go by an honor code.
When I asked former school mates to help me with items for gift boxes, they gave, when I asked them for donations, they gave, and without question! Why? Character.
This is a trait we build early on. Even as a kid I never lied, stole or hurt people (sadly, a few people tried it when I was a early teen..and they had to find out Brooklyn still was stored within)...of course this was before the Quaker days!!
But seriously, when you are honest with people it adds up when you really need help. I thank God for my foster mother, and my mother, although I think I was an odd child, in that I never got in trouble, in fact, I ran from trouble or I would talk trouble out of a bad plan.

But I want you to always tell the truth, even if it hurts, as one day, you may need something from your community; for yourself, OR to help others in need and when they look back on your track record of integrity, honor and kindness, they will help because they know you will do what you said you would do. Your word is your Bond, (don't act like you never heard that before) lol
Remember what you do today, may help you tomorrow!
Be Kind, be loving, be strong in this chaotic world. Just because everyone is going crazy, don't mean you have to join them!! Happy Turkey and Holidays to you and your family and if your like me and don't have one, happy holidays to YOU, honor and celebrate your life, as it is special and with great meaning and purpose- to help others! xoxo

Hi blog family!

Exam time is here! I hope you prepared, you are in the final stretch!
For those of you aged out and in college, this could bring up many feelings, as you may or may not have a place to go for the summer break.
I know some of you are resourceful, taking summer overnight jobs at camps, others will be sleeping on friends couches, I know this is reality when you aged out, not many options.

Some have better luck than others because perhaps they had an adult who was able to help them, that is fine, be happy for those that left and are doing good or better, at least someone knew how to go get it, their blessing. (Mary Mary :) )

Choose your friends wisely and make sure they are all about studying and not partying, as that last one can be a downfall of ANY college kid, but as a former foster, you must always be on point about YOUR business!!
Don't hold your past hostage for what is going on in your life now. If you have to get two jobs, (like most American's these days), and walk two miles to have food on your table and finish your schooling, go for it.
*Nothing good in this life is free or easy!
You may think your rich friend is better off than you but remember, we ALL go through life challenges, the rich or people with parents may hide it well but trust, they have 99 problems, just $ is not one of them!
Focus on you and how YOU can achieve YOUR greatness! After all the schooling and life lessons go back and help other fosters in YOUR own way!
I pray you will all have a great summer and remember just because your friends want to act a fool, does not mean that you have to follow, DO YOU! If your true to yourself, you can't go wrong!
