I never chased followers. I chased usefulness.

When I started uploading on Pexels, I was 58. Today at 62, my photos crossed 6 Million views.

- 456.2K views - Linemen at sunset (5.3K downloads)
- 311.3K views - Buddha statue (1.2K downloads)
- 146.1K views - Paneer with naan (886 downloads)
- 139.6K views - Old man with cow at Charminar (213 downloads)

People from USA, Brazil, Vietnam, Mongolia - they don't know me. But they download my Hyderabad.

How? 4 Secrets:

Secret 1: My Advertising & Industrial Background is My Superpower

For 40 years in Banjara Hills, I shot for factories, cement plants, electrical boards, hotels, and ad agencies. That taught me what an art director actually searches for.

An amateur shoots a fish curry beautifully. An advertising photographer shoots it with space for text, with spoon, fork, onion on side, top view, with copy space - so a restaurant menu designer in Saudi can add price.

See my fish curry (11.1K views) - I kept black bowl, white rice corner, raw fish top. Designer can crop it. My Charminar photo is not just a monument - it has a man with green fodder, bullock cart - story for a travel company.

Tip: Before shooting, ask: "If I was in Germany making a brochure, would I download this?" If yes, shoot it.

I don't upload 100 photos one day and sleep 3 months. I upload 3-5 good photos every week, for 4 years.

Pexels algorithm loves consistency. My early photos got 2.2K views (truck), then 7.5K (red car in an alignment shop). But because I stayed, Pexels started pushing my new uploads to top.

My 112,382 & growing everyday blog pageviews also came same way - not one viral post, but 300 posts.

At 62, I have time and patience. Young guys quit in 2 months. I stay.

Secret 3: Niche Stacking - I Don't Shoot Everything, I Stack 3 Niches

I stacked what Hyderabad gives me best:

1. Food Photography (My highest downloads): 146K paneer, 218K biryani set, 173K curry. Every restaurant in world needs Indian food shots.
2. Culture & Real India: Bullock cart (105.9K), Old man at Charminar (139.6K), Cow on street (36.2K). The world is tired of Taj Mahal & monuments, landscapes - they want real Hyderabad, cities, activities.
3. Industrial & Hard Work: Mine truck (681K), Electric linemen (456K), Pea farm (882K - my highest!). No one shoots these, but every company presentation needs them.

Just take a morning walk with your mobile phone and keep your eyes AND ears open. Yes, ears too.

Here are 3 ways your mobile and your neighbourhood can earn you good money.

1. MUNDANE PHOTOS - The Beauty of the Ordinary

Don't shoot scenery. Shoot stories.

Is there a person walking with a pet? Don't shoot the person's face. Shoot low angle - only the dog and the person's legs walking. That one photo sells for $3 on Adobe Stock as "morning walk concept".

Construction work happening? A truck being loaded? A lady cleaning vessels? A roadside puncture shop? Take it. Top angle. Close up of hands. Buyers in USA and Europe pay premium for "authentic India work culture" - they can't shoot it.

You don't need 4K cinema. You need 10 seconds of steady life.

* Pigeons fluttering from your office window.

* Traffic signal turning green.

Hold your phone steady, shoot 10-15 seconds, no shaking. This is called B-Roll. Every YouTuber, every ad filmmaker in the world is searching for this on Pond5 and Storyblocks. A single 10-sec clip of "Indian street dog barking - low angle" sells for $15-$25. Forever.

**Where I shoot:** During my walk in Kismetpur, while waiting for my chai, while waiting for a client at Banjara Hills. No extra time.

3. MUNDANE AUDIO - The Most Overlooked Gold

This is where 99% people miss. Everyone shoots photos and videos. Almost no one records AUDIO.

Your mobile's voice recorder can make more money than your camera.

Record these at home, office, travel:

The Gods Under The Trees - Roadside Shrines of Hyderabad

I found them on a regular morning walk, not inside a big temple complex, but under two ordinary trees by the side of the road in Hyderabad.

No priest. No bells. Just faith, in its most honest form.

As a street photographer, I have always believed that the real stories of a city are not in its monuments, but on its footpaths. These two small shrines I photographed recently are a perfect example of what I call - Street Spirituality.

Photo 1: The Ganesha Shrine

The first shrine was built around the base of a single tree. The trunk was whitewashed and marked with red kumkum - a sign that the tree itself is considered sacred.

On a simple platform made of bricks, someone had placed a framed picture of Lord Ganesha, beautifully garlanded with fresh marigold and jasmine. In front of it were small, colourful idols - Ganesha, Lakshmi, and Kuber - all covered in haldi and kumkum from daily pujas. A small diya, a few incense sticks, and scattered flowers showed that someone still comes here every day.

This is not a temple built by a trust. This is a temple built by belief. People passing by stop, fold their hands, and move on. It protects the tree, and the tree protects the faith.

Photo 2: The Twin Tree and the Sacred Threads

Just a few steps away was the second shrine, even more intimate. Two trees growing together, their trunks tied together with countless white Kalava threads. This is the sacred ritual of Vat Purnima and Vat Savitri, where women tie threads around banyan or peepal trees praying for their family's well-being.

At the base, a small, old picture of a Goddess and an idol wrapped in yellow cloth lay among turmeric, broken earthen lamps, and flower petals. Around it, someone had drawn a fresh white Muggu / Rangoli. The white chalk lines, the scattered flowers, the soot on the stones - everything tells you this place is alive with daily worship.

What These Roadside Shrines Teach Us Photographers

Stories are everywhere: You don't need to go to a famous temple to photograph devotion. Sometimes a brick platform under a tree tells a bigger story.

Light and Texture: Notice the textures - the cracked white paint on the bark, the rough bricks, the smooth marigold petals, the soft rangoli dust. Morning light at 9 AM, like in these shots, is perfect for capturing these details.

Respectful Photography: These are places of worship. I shot from a respectful distance, without disturbing any offerings, and without staging anything. That authenticity is what makes a street photo work.

In Hyderabad, where the city is changing so fast, these little shrines are anchors. They remind us that faith doesn't always need marble and gold. Sometimes, a tree, two bricks, and a flower garland are enough.

Dadhi – The Forgotten Telugu Game Played on the Streets of India | Fotocafestudios

Sometimes, the most beautiful museums have no walls.

They are found on village streets, temple courtyards, shaded verandahs and dusty corners where an old man sits down and draws a few lines on the ground.

No expensive board.

No plastic pieces.

No batteries.

No internet connection.

Just a few stones, a piece of chalk—and a game passed from one generation to another.

This photograph introduced me to one such game.

Dadhi.

Or Daadi / Dhadi (దాడి) in Telugu.

I came across this scene while photographing everyday life. An elderly man was sitting on the pavement with children, playing a game on a board drawn directly onto the paving stones.

When I asked him what the game was called, he simply said:

"Dadhi."

And suddenly, a few chalk lines on the pavement became a doorway into an older India.

What is Dadhi?

Dadhi is a traditional Indian strategy and alignment game associated with Telugu-speaking regions.

It belongs to the same broad family of games known internationally as Nine Men's Morris, and in India it is also associated with names such as Navakankari and Nau Goti. Sources specifically record Daadi/Dahdi as a Telugu name for the game.

The basic idea is beautifully simple:

Get three of your playing pieces in a line.

Do that, and you can usually capture one of your opponent's pieces.

Then the game becomes a battle of strategy—trying to create your own line while preventing your opponent from creating theirs.

A Game That Needed Almost Nothing

Look carefully at the photograph.

There is no beautifully carved wooden game board.

No colourful manufactured counters.

No instruction manual.

The pavement itself has become the game board.

Small stones become playing pieces.

A piece of chalk becomes the drawing instrument.

And the surrounding street becomes the gaming room.

This is one of the things I find fascinating about traditional Indian games.

They were often accessible to almost everyone.

You didn't have to buy entertainment.

You created it.

How is Dadhi played?

The exact rules and number of pieces can vary between local versions.

Traditional descriptions of Daadi include versions in which two players use nine or eleven pieces each. Some Telugu accounts specifically describe 11 pieces per player, while the more widely known Nine Men's Morris/Navakankari version uses nine pieces each.

The basic gameplay, however, follows a familiar pattern.

1. Draw the board

The players create a series of connected squares/lines.

The playable positions are the points where the lines meet.

And unlike a modern board game, the board can simply be drawn on the floor.

2. Place the pieces

The two players take turns placing their stones or counters on vacant positions.

In the traditional game, simple objects such as stones, tamarind seeds or other small natural objects could serve as playing pieces.

3. Make a Dadhi

The objective is to arrange three of your pieces in a straight line.

That formation is the key moment of the game.

Make your Dadhi—and you can capture an opponent's piece according to the local rules.

4. Move and attack

Once the pieces have been placed, players begin moving them along the lines of the board.

The strategy becomes increasingly difficult.

You are simultaneously trying to:

Create your own Dadhi.

Block your opponent's Dadhi.

Protect your own pieces.

Force your opponent into a disadvantageous position.

The game therefore requires planning rather than luck. Traditional descriptions emphasise exactly this combination of forming lines and preventing the opponent from doing the same.

More Than a Game

What fascinated me about this particular encounter wasn't only the game.

It was the people around it.

An older man.

Children.

A woman sitting nearby.

A pavement.

And an ordinary afternoon.

There is something wonderfully Indian about this scene.

The game isn't being played inside an entertainment centre.

It isn't being streamed.

Nobody is looking at a mobile phone.

The players are sitting together, looking at one another, thinking, talking and waiting for the next move.

In today's world, that is becoming increasingly rare.

Before Smartphones, There Were Games Like This

Think about how children entertain themselves today.

Smartphones.

Tablets.

Gaming consoles.

YouTube.

Social media.

Online games.

Now compare that with Dadhi.

A child could simply sit down beside an elder and say:

"Let's play."

And within minutes, the pavement could become a battlefield.

The game required concentration.

It required observation.

It required patience.

And most importantly, it created human interaction.

The Beautiful Simplicity of Indian Traditional Games

Dadhi wasn't alone.

India has an extraordinary heritage of traditional games:

Pallanguzhi

Ashta Chamma

Kabaddi

Kho-Kho

Gilli Danda

Chenne Mane

Pagade

Aadu Puli Aattam

and countless regional games whose names may never have been written down.

Many of these games were transmitted orally.

A grandmother taught a child.

A father taught his son.

A village elder taught children.

And eventually, the game became part of the community's collective memory.

That makes photographs of these games particularly valuable.

Because once the people who remember them disappear, the rules and stories can disappear with them.

Dadhi and the Global Nine Men's Morris Family

One fascinating aspect of Dadhi is that the basic game belongs to a much wider family of alignment games.

In the West, the best-known equivalent is Nine Men's Morris, also called Mills or Merels.

In India, related versions are known by several names, including Navakankari, Nau Goti and Daadi.

But we should be careful about saying that every version is exactly the same.

Local games evolve.

Boards change.

The number of pieces changes.

Rules change.

Names change.

And that's part of what makes traditional games so fascinating.

A game travels—and each community makes it its own.

Why I Photograph Things Like This

As photographers, we often chase spectacular subjects.

Monuments.

Landscapes.

Festivals.

Celebrities.

Wildlife.

Beautiful architecture.

But sometimes the photograph that stays with us is something much simpler.

An old man sitting on a pavement.

A child watching carefully.

A few stones.

Some chalk lines.

And a game that might otherwise disappear without anyone noticing.

Photography has the power to preserve more than faces.

It can preserve:

A way of life.

A tradition.

A language.

A game.

A memory.

And sometimes, a whole generation.

Perhaps We Should Start Playing Again

Maybe Dadhi deserves a comeback.

Imagine a school teacher drawing the board in the school courtyard.

Imagine grandparents teaching children how to play.

Imagine traditional-game competitions in neighbourhoods.

Imagine a museum displaying old Indian games alongside photographs of the people who actually played them.

Imagine children discovering that entertainment doesn't always have to come from a screen.

Perhaps these games don't need to compete with technology.

Perhaps they simply need to be remembered.

A Photograph Becomes a Memory

When I look at this photograph, I don't just see a game.

I see an older India quietly meeting a younger India.

The old man knows the rules.

The child is learning.

The board is on the ground.

And the game continues.

Perhaps that is how culture has always survived.

Not through grand monuments.

Not through textbooks alone.

But through one person sitting beside another and saying:

"Come, I'll show you how to play."

DĀDHI — A GAME WORTH REMEMBERING

The next time you see an old person playing a traditional game, don't just walk past.

Stop.

Ask its name.

Ask how it is played.

Ask who taught them.

Ask how long they have been playing.

And most importantly—

photograph it.

Because someday, that photograph may be one of the few remaining records that the game ever existed.

# **How Our Photography Legacy Began**

### **A Framed Beginning. A Fateful Friendship. A Destiny Developed in the Darkroom.**

After the Partition, when trains carried more loss than luggage, my grandfather **Hemandas Fathumal Ramchandani** stepped into Devlali with little more than his stubborn courage and a pair of skilled hands. Like countless Sindhis who had been scattered overnight, he carried no wealth — just the quiet determination to rebuild.

In Devlali, he returned to what he did best: **framing memories for others while carrying his own unframed heartbreak within.**

Life moved slowly but steadily. A few years later, with hope leading and necessity pushing, he shifted to Poona. The family squeezed into a small home, and the framing shop became the centre of survival. The two elder sons joined the business; the younger ones — including my father — watched from school benches, absorbing lessons meant for life.

Everything was ordinary. Predictable. Safe.

**Until the day destiny walked into the shop wearing a gentle smile and the name Mr. Arole.**

## **The Kind of Customer Who Becomes Family**

Mr. Arole wasn’t just another face among the customers. He was a **gentleman of culture**, a well-travelled soul who spoke softly but saw deeply. An amateur photographer who developed his own films, he would visit often to get his prints framed. Over time, his visits lingered, conversations deepened, and a quiet friendship formed.

One afternoon in 1952, while examining a freshly framed photograph, he said casually — yet unmistakably —

“**Hemandas, have you ever thought of starting a photo studio?**”

“**Arre saab, yeh sab humare bas ki baat nahi. Studio? Itne paise kahan se laaun?**”

## When a Photograph Became a Landmark: The Sai Baba Display That Transformed Rani Art Studio Hyderabad

If there was one shared superpower between my father and my uncles, it was this:

**getting the maximum out of the minimum.**

They didn’t come from wealth. They didn’t have imported equipment, air-conditioned studios, or investors backing them. What they had was far more powerful — vision, discipline, creativity, and an almost magical ability to stretch every rupee until it sparkled with possibility.

In the early 1980s, after years of documenting **Satya Sai Baba photography in black and white**, my father — **Purshotham Das Ramchandani, lovingly known as “Pishu”** — entered the world of **colour photography in Hyderabad**. By then, he had already built one of the region’s richest archives of neatly catalogued Sai Baba negatives and devotional photographs.

But unlike many photographers who locked away their best work in dusty cupboards and steel cabinets, my father believed photographs were not meant to sleep in darkness.

He believed photographs were meant to travel.

Into homes.

Into conversations.

Into memory.

Into devotion.

So he began creating **printed catalogues of Sai Baba photographs**, allowing devotees to browse and order specific images. This was long before online galleries, digital previews, or WhatsApp catalogs. Every print required effort, chemistry, patience, and craftsmanship.

Then came another inspired move.

Understanding that many devotees could not afford large photographic enlargements, he selected some of the most loved Sai Baba portraits and got them **offset printed in bulk**, making them available at nominal prices. It was not driven by business ambition alone. It was seva, goodwill, and emotional connection wrapped into photography.

And then came the masterstroke that changed everything.

## The Giant Sai Baba Photo Outside Rani Art Studio

At a time when most photography studios in Hyderabad operated from cramped single-shutter shops measuring barely 8x15 feet, **Rani Art Studio** was already ahead of its time.

The studio occupied **two full-sized shutters**, which in the 1960s and 70s itself was considered a sign of prestige and scale.

The setup was thoughtfully divided:

* **Shutter One:** Office area, customer interaction space, darkroom, retouching section, and print handling

* **Shutter Two:** A dedicated professional photography studio measuring approximately 12x22 feet, fully equipped for portraits and enlargements

And one evening, inspired by equal parts devotion and marketing brilliance, my father mounted a **massive 4x6-foot enlarged photograph of Satya Sai Baba** directly onto the studio shutter facing the main road.

It was not just pasted casually.

It was lit carefully with tube lights and focused illumination so the portrait glowed softly during the evening hours. The photograph radiated calmness, spiritual energy, and presence. Even from a distance, people slowed down to look at it.

Some folded their hands.

Some stood silently.

Some simply stared.

Without realizing it, my father had created something far bigger than a photo display.

He had just built a stunning bungalow—dramatically perched on natural rock formations. A structure that looked like it had *grown out of the earth itself*.

The name said it all:

**“On the Rocks.”**

But he didn’t just want photographs.

He wanted **statement pieces**.

**4 ft x 6 ft giant enlargements.**

Multiple angles. Different lighting moods. Morning glow. Evening drama.

In those days, that wasn’t a request.

Because such work was done only by elite studios in **Madras or Bombay**—equipped with massive enlargers and industrial labs.

Long before YouTube.
Long before smartphones.
Long before “live darshan” became a tap away…

There was a man with an 8mm camera…
…and a heart overflowing with devotion.

My father, Purshotham Das Ramchandani (Pishu), had already been photographing Sai Baba in Hyderabad and Puttaparthi. But still photographs, no matter how beautiful, felt incomplete.

Because what he witnessed… couldn’t be frozen in a single frame.

It had movement.
It had grace.
It had something beyond explanation.

So he took a leap.

With his humble 8mm color film camera — no sound, no automation, no luxury — he began capturing living moments of divinity:

“You brought God closer to us… what temple could have done more?”

And that was the truth.

With a simple camera…
a strip of film…

He made divinity portable.

The story doesn’t end there.

At one point, Dad trained his nephew — a technically sound, quick-thinking young man — to carry this mission forward.

During one such screening in a small town, disaster struck.

⚠️ The projector belt snapped.

⚠️ The audience fell silent… disappointed.

But he didn’t panic.

After a moment of thought, he asked for something unusual:

👉 An old cycle tube

He cut it… shaped it… and created a makeshift belt.

Some innovations are born in boardrooms.

Others — like this one — are born in the quiet stirrings of the heart.

It was 1973.

My father, Purshotham Das Ramchandani (Pishu), had been invited by a close friend — a devoted follower of Satya Sai Baba — to photograph Baba during his visit to the Sivam Temple in Hyderabad.

In those days, opportunities like this were rare… almost sacred in themselves.
Dad, ever the curious creator, accepted the assignment — unaware that this wouldn’t just be another shoot. It would become a turning point.

Because he didn’t just photograph Baba.
He experienced something far deeper… something words struggle to capture.

With every visit… every frame… every darshan through the lens…
something within him began to shift.

What started as a professional assignment slowly transformed into a personal journey.
A connection. A calling.

Dad didn’t stop at still photography. He began filming Baba on 8mm film — preserving moments not just as images, but as living memories (a story that deserves its own chapter someday).

With time, blessings, and quiet permission, he began sharing these photographs and films — first from Rani Art Studio, and later even in Puttaparthi during festivals like Dussehra and Baba’s Birthday.

People didn’t just buy them.
They cherished them.

But then came the moment of pure, simple genius — the kind that doesn’t announce itself loudly, but gently changes everything.

📖 The Sai Baba Bookmark.

Dad created it with the most basic tools — and the deepest intention.

A 2” x 5” portrait of Baba… printed twice… carefully aligned back-to-back…
glued with precision… a neat hole punched at the top… and finally, finished with a soft silk ribbon.

That was it.

No machines.
No mass production.
No marketing strategy.

Just hands… heart… and devotion.

But what he created was far more than a bookmark.

It became a presence.

A sacred companion tucked between the pages of a book…
A gentle reminder of faith during quiet moments…
A thoughtful gift passed from one devotee to another.

In his 70s—when most people slow down—my dad quietly created one of the most beautiful and unconventional ways to earn through photography.

No marketing.
No ads.
No social media.

Just human connection… and a camera.

🎭 The Method Was Simple… Yet Brilliant

Wherever he went—
A friend’s house, a dentist’s clinic, a small shop, a casual visit—
He would start a warm, genuine conversation.

## **My First Paid Shoot – The Truth Behind the Confidence**

There’s always a “first” that shapes you.

Mine came in early 1983… and it didn’t come gently.

A senior officer from the **Public Works Department (PWD)** approached my father to photograph a newly built institute. The brief was simple — documentation with a touch of creativity. The budget, as expected from a government project, wasn’t exactly generous.

Dad agreed.

But he had something else in mind… something I didn’t see coming.

Instead of taking up the assignment himself, he decided to send **me** — a complete novice.

Not because of the budget.

Not because there was no choice.

But because he believed **this was my moment to be pushed into the deep end.**

That was his style. Sudden. Unannounced. Uncomfortable.

And, as I later realized — priceless.

### **The Night Before – Fear Meets Determination**

The shoot was scheduled for the very next day.

I remember sweating… not because of the heat, but because of fear. Real fear. The kind that makes you question everything you think you know.

But somewhere inside, a voice said:

My grandfather began his photography journey in 1952 in Poona, at a time when every photograph was a craft, not a click. My father carried that legacy forward, moving to Hyderabad in 1964 and building a studio from scratch.

As a teenager, during school holidays, I was sent to the studio.

I moved a few feet.

What unfolded was magical.

This Diwali campaign photograph wasn’t created inside a fancy studio or with expensive equipment. It was built from patience, teamwork, and the joy of getting the small details right.

The rangoli was handcrafted by a wonderfully patient artist who arranged every grain with care. Each prop was thoughtfully placed, not rushed — because festive images are not assembled, they are nurtured.

The background is actually ordinary Shahbad stone, hand-colored with mud tones by my assistants. By then, they were so well trained they could transform a surface like this almost instantly. What looks like a natural rustic floor is actually crafted illusion.

The camera setup was equally special. My father designed a custom recopying device that allowed the camera to rise vertically up to 12 feet. It let us shoot artwork, carpets, and large set-ups without straining our necks or backs — a piece of engineering born from necessity and love for the craft.

Lighting was intentionally simple: a single directional light, not too soft, to mimic early morning glow. No overproduction. No gimmicks. Just thoughtful placement and respect for light.

And that’s the quiet magic of photography — ordinary materials, arranged with intention, can become timeless.

Sometimes the most memorable images come not from complexity, but from clarity.

After a long brainstorming session, we arrived at a quiet but powerful symbol — peas in a pod. Individual units, distinct yet inseparable. Different identities, one shared shell. A perfect visual language for corporate unity.

But symbolism alone is not enough in advertising. It has to *feel* artistic.

That’s where styling entered the conversation.

The linen cloth background added texture and warmth, softening the corporate tone and giving the frame an organic honesty. The money plant was introduced as a subtle nod to finance and growth — prosperity that thrives when elements support each other. Nothing in the frame was accidental. Every object had a voice.

Lighting was the real storyteller.

We chose dramatic, directional light to sculpt the peas and cast shadows that added tension and depth. The aim was to stop a flipping magazine reader mid-page. Advertising photography is a battlefield of attention — if the image doesn’t command silence, it disappears.

This one did the opposite.

The campaign ran across magazines, hoardings, and corporate communications. It didn’t just perform well — it resonated. The client was ecstatic. The agency celebrated. And we walked away reminded of a truth every photographer eventually learns:
