Sigma Scholarship Contest

The Sigma Corporation of America Scholarship will award a cash gift of $5,000 as well as a gift card in the amount of $1,000 for Sigma products to one talented high school senior to advance his or her education and goals toward obtaining a career in the photography industry.

Applications will be accepted online from 12:00 a.m. Eastern Time (“ET”) on November 15, 2010 to 5:00 p.m. ET on February 28, 2011. Please note that Sigma will review each and every submission prior to posting it to the website, which could result in a delay of as much as 48 hours from the time the submission is sent to when it appears online. The option to submit applications will be turned off at exactly 5:00 p.m. ET on February 28, 2011.

Online voting will occur from 12:00 a.m. ET on March 1, 2011 to 5:00 p.m. ET on April 1, 2011, and the winner will be announced April 18, 2011.

Eligibility

The Sigma Corporation of America Scholarship is open to all high school seniors who will graduate in 2011 and seek higher learning. One Life is open to photographers from around the world! They are looking for all types of photography including (and definitely not limited to): Fashion, Landscape, Travel, Candid, Digital / Manipulated, Artistic / Conceptual, Self-Portrait, Wedding and more!

You may submit up to 9 images for $10 per image. For 10 or more images, they offer a flat discounted rate of $95. You can upload up to 15 images for the discounted rate. Viewbook PhotoStory 2010 is an international contest to which photographers are invited to submit a contemporary collection of images that convey a compelling narrative. While a single image has a narrative in itself and can be strong in isolation, Viewbook Photostory’s focus is specifically on showing series of images, in a well-chosen sequence that triggers a reaction and combines a narrative with photographic excellence.
Viewbook PhotoStory is the ultimate international arena for showing and proving the impact of these narratives, and offers an engaging and prominent platform for photography artists.

Scott Kelby has announced his Third Annual Worldwide Photo Walk scheduled for Saturday, 24 July.

Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photo Walk is the world’s largest global social photography event in the history of photography itself. It takes place on the same day around the world where photographers of all walks of life and skill levels gather together, usually in downtown areas to socialize, learn new tips from each other, and explore their corner of the world through photography.

There is no fee to participate but pre-registration is required. Just go to the Worldwide Photo Walk site, find a walk near you, and join in on the fun. If there is no Photo Walk in your area feel free to register to lead a walk of your own.

Anyone can participate too. All you need is a camera. It doesn’t even matter what kind of camera either. People have showed up with disposables in the past, had a blast, and left with a new appreciation for photography.

POYi Launches $10,000 Emerging Incentive Program

For some it might be a passion, for others a hobby and to a few, maybe a dream not yet accomplished. Now, with the assistance of a new project from Pictures of the Year International (POYi), a program of the Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI), amateur and semi-professional photographers will have the opportunity to do work of a global significance.

POYi, the oldest photojournalism program in the world, has announced the "POYi Emerging Vision Incentive." The incentive will fund and showcase documentary work on social issues or political trends by aspiring documentary photographers. The Emerging Vision Incentive recipient will receive up to $10,000 to assist in developing a photo story that reflects daily life, social issues, cultural trends or news events.

In addition to financial assistance, the recipient will have the opportunity to have his or her work displayed at RJI and The Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles during their exhibit of winning images from the 67th Annual POYi Competition which opens in June 2010. The Emerging Vision Incentive recipient will also receive a full day of career-development during the annual POYi Education Seminar and Awards Program.

Tom says he chose "Pinhole Angel" ,by Claudia Gorman ,because, "It's the palpable sense of light that makes it special. In pinhole photography light passes directly through a small aperture to reach the film/sensor. When the shutter is opened light enters and travels in a straight line, pure and unaltered by the curved glass of a lens, to form the image: its integrity is maintained. And in a photograph like Gorman's, we have a real chance to experience its wonder, beauty, and magic."

Craig says he chose "Iron Lady" - Zoltan Adam Varga -because, "The photographer takes advantage of the juxtaposition of near/far and the extreme depth of field that the pinhole has as well as the vignetting properties while creating a compelling photograph. In addition, the longer exposure times that are characteristic of the pinhole create a sense of movement that draws the viewer further into the image as our eye follows the clouds as they 'move' across the image. This photograph delivers a refreshing point of view."

People & Planet International Photography Competition

The aim is to select 55 photos to be published in the 2011 People & Planet: Social Justice & Environment Diary & Calendar, which raises money for Australian non-profit organisations.

They're looking for 55 images of people, places or things which tell a story about a social-justice or environment issue. Photos of almost any genre will be accepted, including portraits, landscapes, animals, objects, or any combination of these. We particularly like photos which tell "good news" stories about social-justice or the environment. With 55 spots up for grabs, it's a good chance to have your photos published and achieve international fame!

You can submit up to 4 photos per entrant. All submitted photos must be accompanied by 2-5 sentences describing the image and the social-justice or environment issues which are raised by the photo. Photos will be assessed jointly with the accompanying description.

The People & Planet International Photography Competition is open to everyone, and we particularly encourage people living in the developing world to enter.

The images can be colour or B&W, but should be at least at 300 dpi resolution, supplied in JPEG format, with a maximum file size of 10 MB. We like minimal Photoshop-ing, and will usually exclude photos where Photoshop-ing is obvious.

Please don't submit images that were submitted to this competition in 2009.

ImageRights Launches to Help Protect Photographers and Stock-Photo Agencies from Copyright Infringement

ImageRights International, an Internet-based services company, announced the availability of its first service—ImageRights—a low-cost, easy to use solution designed to help protect the copyrights of photographers and stock-photo agencies. Targeted to the estimated three million worldwide commercial photographers, ImageRights is applying visual search and image recognition technology to track the use of photographs and illustrations across the Internet, enabling rights holders to discover and ultimately recover fees for the unlicensed use of their works.

Commercial photographers’ very livelihoods are being tested by two fundamental problems: rapidly declining revenues resulting from downward pricing pressures on stock photography, and the ease with which copyrighted content can be copied, literally with the click of a mouse, and then reused online without authorization. The stock agencies are likewise suffering from declining revenues, forcing them to reevaluate their business models and the services they offer in order to reignite revenue growth.

ImageRights addresses both problems. Users upload their photographs and illustrations to the system, and then for as little as $4.95 per month, the ImageRights service will provide a weekly report detailing any image matches that it has found on the web. The report provides contact information for the infringing sites, enabling users to follow-up with those persons or companies directly. The service will be offered to individual photographers, visual artists, and stock agencies, reporting on the use of images from their entire inventory.
