Day 13. A good day! This section had a lawn on one side and bushes on the other. The little amount of litter on the lawn as well as in the bushes was caused by the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup team, who comb this section a few days ago.

Found among the dead leaves a plastic bottle cap. Time to degrade 500 years?

Found on the ground a candy wrapper. Time to degrade 1 year?

Found on the lawn a part of a balloon. Time to degrade 50 years?

Today on the island Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. A lot of people were walking around with garbage bags and cloves on. Some where logging the litter they found. It's a great initiative and a lot of help. BUT how can habits of littering be changed? How can landscape design prevent littering? How can garbage can design prevent, racoones, seagulls, and the wind scattering the litter? This is a project I envision working on. Who knows it might happen..
Monday I will do day 13 of the clean up.

The section today was along side a frisbee golf course. There was patches of tall grass, bushes and trees. About a meter in from the road the grass is cut regularly. On first sight this section looked 'clean' only a few pieces, clearly blown there by the wind. But this was just a facade, in the bushes , among the tall grass, under the trees, hidden were cans, water bottles, plastic bags and diapers. Most of the stuff clearly thrown or purposely forgotten, left for generation to come.

Found stuck on the road a piece of tin foil. Time to degrade never, but then the road will never degrade too.

Found beside the road a piece of paper. Time to degrade 6 months?

Found in the grass a piece of paper. Time to degrade 6 months?

My goal was to comb a meter on either side of the road. The restriction is needed because of the endless the amount of litter under bushes and trees. I could spend hours on one stretch. Today, a stretch with on one side lawn on the other side a meter of lawn and then bushes. On the grass part of both side the usual small piece of litter, inbetween the bushes allot more. The night was windy and the bushes act as litter catchers..

Found in the grass a small piece of plastic. Time to degrade 500 years?

Found in the grass a tie wrap. Time to degrade never 500 years for plastic and the metal inside will rust eventually.

Day 10 and only 40 meters done. After a warm weekend , lots of tourists, the summer season over, parks workers laid off for the winter. Cut backs and no one to clean up. The stretch has, a garden , washrooms, and fast food outlets. It's a busy spot where people gather, wait, eat, buy. There is so much to pick up, small litter, tiny bits barely visible, lots of tissues, fast food packaging.

Found on the lawn a straw wrapper. There were allot of these. Time to degrade 50 years?

This section had on one side beach and on the other lawn. Beach season is over, the litter left is mostly small stuff , half buried in the sand. Though under the few trees where bikes are parked there was more litter. The lawn was scattered with plastic protection sleeves for straws, forgotten by the audience cheering on the runners participating in the Long Boat race, held in the morning.

Depressing litter gathering day. In between the pine trees that are between the beach and the road a lot of litter. One wonders with all the garbage cans on the beach. Why? Some plastics have clearly been there for years. No heavy litter like cans and bottles, but wrappers and plastic bags, stuff the wind has blown away, coming to rest among the pine needles and the grasses.

Found by the beach a piece of plastic . Time to degrade 500 years?

Found among the grasses by the beach a piece of plastic. Looks like it has been there awhile. Time to degrade 500 years.

Day seven of the clean up. The light was bleak.. Just amazing. I love rain. Moisture speeds up the time to degrade, but what difference does it make on 500 years? The landscape, lawn on the north side, tall grass and bushes on the south side, with some part beach.

Found among the tall grass a tin can. Time to degrade never, it will rust.

Found on the edge of the pavement a plastic bag. Time to degrade 500 years?

The landscape features of today were:
Lawn, which had the usual small peice of litter, though relatively more larger litter like candy wrappers and plastic bags than the other lawn sections, probably more litter is blown over from the beach at the other side of the road. The beach part, sand, had the occasional piece of litter. But the beach was intersected with parts of tall grasses and shrubs and proved to be great net for the litter caught by wind while the owners are paying attention to more engaging beach activities. Inbetween rocks at the entrance to a board walk leading to the beach, allot of large litter were 10 plastic water bottles! Lost by people siting on the rocks, waiting for the rest of their group to gather, or conveniently 'falling' out of their packs after a day on the beach.

Found on rocks by the entrance to the beach a piece of toilet paper. Time to degrade 1 year?

Found inbetween two rocks a piece of a candy wrapper, made of paper. Time to degrade 4-5 years?

Found among the tall grasses by the beach, a piece of tape with paints attached. Time to degrade 100 years?

Found on the road a aluminum container. This will never degrade!

This section has on the south side a small plot of pine trees and on the other side green lawn. There was a lot of (old) litter inbetween the pine cones and needles. Some of the litter might have been there for 10 - 20 years? These pine trees stand on a dry and sandy ground slowing the time to degrade.

Found on the road a straw. Time to degrade probably very long if it remains on the cement road.

Found under pine trees a piece of plastic. Time to degrade 100 years?

Found under pine trees a candy wrapper. Time to degrade 1 year?

Found under pine trees a piece of paper. Time to degrade 4 years.

Found under pine trees a piece of toilet paper. Time to degrade 4-5 months?

Found under the pine trees an aluminum lid. Time to degrade never.

Found on the side of the road a piece of plastic. Time to degrade 20 years or more ?

Found at the side of the road a plastic lid. Time to degrade 10-20 years..

Around, a small building where the tram picks up tourist even though there is a garbage-can a lot of small pieces of candy wrappers can be found. Obvious, a place where people while waiting, eat a candy. The tiny places in the shadow of benches and other structures need attention, care and respect. They should not be treated a useless residual spaces, thus make littering easier. Maybe these places need some seedbombs like Adam Zaretsky creates. Or an intervention by the Commission for Pleasure in the Built Environment.

Found in the shadow of a small building an aluminum lid. Time to degrade never.

Found in the shadow of a bench a candy wrapper, which has less plastic written on it. Time to degrade maybe instead of 10 years, 4 years?

Found in the shadow of a small building an aluminum juice container. Time to degrade never.

Found among leaves in the shadow of a small building a waterbottle wrapper made of Paper. Time to degrade 8-10 months. The question is where is the water bottle??

Found in the tall grass behind the small building a piece of plastic. Time to degrade 250 years?

Found among some leaves beside a small building a peice of tin foil. Time to degrade never!

Found in the bushes by Artscape a candy wrapper, similar to one I found on September 7. Time to degrade 2-5 years?

Found beside a hydro pole a drinking can. Made of aluminum. Time to degrade never.

The terrain started with a trimmed lawn and ending with a stretch of tall grasses and bushes. In this last part of only 20 meters I found 10 water bottles hidden among the stinging nettle and bushes. In the middle was a spot with parts of balloons scattered over the road and the grass. Here a link for balloons as litter.

Found on the east side just past the Artspace on the way to Hanlans a piece of gum wrapper. The material is aluminum coated paper. Time to degrade of aluminum never.

Found half way on the road to Hanlans just south of the public toilets on the east side. A tag of clothing made of fabric. Time to degrade 1-2 years?

Found on the east side piece of balloon. Piece of balloon cna take op to 4 years to fully degrade and in the mean time are a hazard for wild life who can mistake it for food.

Found on the east side of the road. Balloons can take up 4 years to degrade.

Found a piece of tissue paper. Time to degrade 4-6 months.

Found close the water just were edge turns sharply to the right a piece of aluminum foil. Time to degrade never.

Found on the lawn a candy wrapper, made of plastic coated paper. Time to degrade 5 years??

Found among the tall grass a candy wrapper and a plastic water bottle. The wrapper is made of a plastic coated paper. Time to degrade 5 years1 The plastic water bottle 450 years!!!!!!!

Clean up day 2, I started about 500 meters from the Hanlans ferry dock, just by the pier. This part has less bushes on the side of the road and there was significantly less large litter, like cans, bottles, plastic bags. Though there was plenty of bits of candy wrappers, plastic, and tissues. It seems that people are more inclined to toss the larger litter in the bushes. The consequence of your action shows because a beer can sticks out on the green short grass but disappears in the bushes. Also, the smaller stuff is less likely to get picked up.

Found under a picnic table by the pier. A piece of plastic. Time to degrade 20 years or maybe never?

Found a bit south of the pier in tall grass a small piece of plastic. Time to degrade 20 years or never?

Found on the grass opposite the bushes a small piece of plastic. Time to degrade 20 years or never?

Found on the same lawn a piece of a wrapper. The material is plastic. Time to degrade 20 years or never?

Found on the same lawn a piece of plastic. Time to degrade 10-20 years or never?

Found underneath some bushes a candy wrapper. Time to degrade 10 years??

Found underneath some bushes, close to the shore, a piece of cloth. Time to degrade 10 months??

Found on the lawn a piece of plastic. Time to degrade 10-20 years or never?

The first day of performing Found. I noticed that more litter can be found on the east side of the road (that is the direction towards the ferry going of island), meaning that people loose more litter on their way home?

Found 20 meters from the Hanlans ferry dock on the east side. It's thin plastic time to degrade10 years?

Found about 40 meters from the Hanlans ferry dock also on the east side. This seems to be plastic coated paper. Degrade time 5 years?

Found about 30 meters from the Hanlans ferry dock on the west side. A candy wrapper, very small, waxed paper. Time to degrade 2-5 months?

Found 30 meters from the Hanlans ferry dock on the east side. A piece of paper, the text says 'balsamic vinegar'. Time to degrade 2-5 months?

Found in hidden in the bushes 120 meters from the Hanlans ferry dock. It's a piece of waxy paper. Time to degrade 2-5 months for paper. But this might be more like a plastic time to degrade 10 years?

Found on the edge of the bushes 100 meters from the Hanlans ferry dock on the east side. A small candy wrapper made of wax paper. Time to degrade 2-5 months?

Found hidden in the bushes on 200 meters from the Hanlans ferry dock on the east side a large piece of tissue. it has a paper kind of substance. Time to degrade 2-5 months?

Found in the bushes around 75 meters from the Hanlans ferry dock on the east side a candy wrapper. Made of thin aluminum. Time to degrade 80 years?
