Have you looked at the calendar today? Can you believe your eyes? The first day of summer is fast approaching. After all, June 21st is just around the corner! The seasons have come and gone, and with them, so has gone the school year. Perhaps your child, or children, have already graduated from their current grade and summer break has officially begun, or you're preparing for this event in the week or so to come. Regardless, the abrupt schedule change can be difficult at best, as the routine you worked diligently to implement had finally become easy---and BAM! Goodbye, predictability (again).

In the coming months, it is essential to come up with a strategy for keeping children on track so they are ready for the 2018-2019 school year. Although it may seem crazy, summers always go fast, and it's stressful to be scrambling to figure out your life all over again when school begins. We love to take advantage of the warm weather to squeeze in as many day trips as we can. Embarking on little adventures offer great sensory play opportunities and memorable experiences for children especially. But don't stop there! You can't have a proper meal without it offering healthy and balanced nutrition. Similarly, the best way to nourish the minds of our children all summer long is with brain food. And it doesn't get much better than STEM curriculum!

What is STEM? The STEM curriculum which can be found in many schools and other educational centers are based on teaching four specific disciplines: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The U.S. Department of Education recognizes long-term benefits to teaching STEM-based curriculum as an invaluable aspect to the brain development of children.

STEM learning is a great way to pique the interest of children of all ages, and feed their active, growing minds. Unfortunately, not all schools follow a STEM curriculum despite it's benefits. But there are plenty of ways to integrate the STEM values into your child's summer on your own. Many public libraries also offer excellent summer reading programs, such as the 2018 Summer Reading Challenge at the Sacramento Public Library. But unless you live in a mansion, there's only so much you can acquire before storage becomes impossible. Which is why my children beg to visit these types of places on a regular basis, and I don't have to feel guilty for taking them because I know they are guaranteed to receive hours of entertainment and mental stimulation in the process. In our own personal experience, our son submerses himself more into STEM lessons and programs when they are offered at his school, and I know he would love and benefit from the summer camp offered here.

A balance of outdoor activities (don't forget sunscreen!), appropriate grade level workbooks to prepare for their upcoming grade, arts and crafts to inspire creativity, and science projects that can be done from your home are a few excellent ways to keep busy little minds active and at work for June, July, and August. Only a few weeks ago, I found myself in a predicament. The type of predicament that has become uncomfortably present in my life, however unwelcome it may be. I was spending the day with my kids in East Bay solo, and I was ready to head home when I realized all at once that I needed to find a restroom. Pronto. I did a mental rundown of all the nearby businesses with which I am familiar, and tried to take inventory of which ones had restrooms and which ones did not. Of course, it is at this time I remember that restrooms are far and few between. The ones I can fit our Mountain Buggy stroller into being even more scarce. Inevitably, I found myself running (and let's be honest, with two toddlers this mostly consisted of me trying to encourage them to run by walking briskly, only to backtrack while they catch up) to a business blocks away, hoping they would remember I was in there earlier and that they would count this as still being a customer that was permitted to use their "Customers Only" bathroom facilities.

Well, traveling in the bay area just got a whole lot better for both me and you! As soon as I heard about the launch of this phone app, I knew we had to test drive the service. Me and my two toddlers rode BART into the city, and we embarked on our little adventure from Embarcadero Station. We walked over to the Ferry Building to attend the weekly Saturday Farmer's Market. Settling on some takeout goodies from Imperial Tea Court to satisfy our appetites, we headed over to Pier 14 to look out over the water while we dug into our crispy spring rolls and I savored a Hong Kong iced tea. Both of my children enjoyed watching the water slap into the pier wall from our suspended location over the water. Steady winds carried the smell of the salty water into our clothes, through our hair, and right into our lungs. There was just enough sunshine to keep the weather from feeling too cool. Despite spending nearly my whole life in San Francisco, it dawned on me that I was not familiar with the pier anywhere below the Ferry Building. A situation I suddenly had the urge to rectify. My toddlers begged to stop at the giant bow and arrow, so I took a photo of them together in front of Cupid's Span. We meandered down along the water, stopping periodically to admire the view.

Heading into uncharted territory, it seemed wise for me to steak out a restroom somewhere along the way. I brought up the Good2Go app, and looked up the nearest location. Bingo! In the direction we were walking, I would only have to walk a few blocks off of our intended path to reach a Good2Go in the area, located inside The Creamery. So, off we went. Following the directions on the Good2Go app, it was very easy to find the location. This particular Good2Go was directly across from the Caltrain Station. As soon as we were approaching The Creamery, the app detected that we had arrived to our destination, and invited me to reserve my place in line so that the restroom was already waiting for me when I found my way to the restrooms inside the establishment. I flashed the barcode under the nifty scanner, heard a beep, and the door gently swung open of its own accord. There was ample room to maneuver my limousine of a stroller into the bathroom with ease, and I did not have to worry about juggling the weight of a door to hold it open in order to push the stroller in and out. The facilities were spacious, very clean (from floor to ceiling), and boasting some very impressive technology that doesn't end with the door scanner. I was pleased to see how well-maintained it was, even down to the changing table, which did not have a speck of dirt or any mess left behind from previous users. Especially as a parent, I appreciated the toilet flush feature, which allows you to manually flush the toilet by waving your hand over the toilet tank---without every coming in contact with the toilet at all. The sink was equipped with a Dyson dual faucet/hand dryer, and a motion sensor allows you to have the door open for you automatically. My son, in particular, was fascinated by the set-up of the Good2Go restroom, and completely enthusiastic about testing out the motion sensors. It was a huge bonus that this service was offered inside a coffee bar, bistro, and full bar establishment so that we could grab snacks or beverages. After our pitstop, we worked our way back up through the piers towards the heart of the city. A very fun and fulfilling family adventure complete!

Making the Most with Your Bundles of Joy (in More Ways Than One)

My daughter is a quintessential second child: in a hurry to go places---in every sense. I can vividly recall eating lunch with two friends and their children when Sienna was 4 months old. She wriggled in my lap, reaching for the irresistible morsels on my plate as I held her in my lap and restricted her reach. I was answering a question from my friend, H, and was mid-sentence... when my small and determined infant reached out onto the table quite suddenly, like a cobra when it strikes, successfully grabbing a noodle from my alfredo fettuccine and bringing it immediately to her mouth. Sweet victory. She had been trying to get her hands on food for weeks by this time. At this point, I was stunned. But I couldn't help but giggle and admire her tenacity and determination. I decided to finally concede to her wishes: from that moment on, Sienna ate each and every thing she could get her little fingers on.

It was clear to me even on that first day with her at the hospital that she was her own person and she makes her own rules. A fact that proves itself each and every day. With a strong personality, she clashes often with her older brother, Everest. But nothing is as sweet and moving as watching them share an affectionate moment together, spontaneously holding hands, having a conversation in baby babble, or cuddling with one another.

My two toddlers, now nearly 5 and 2 respectively, have many things in common---including the diaper brand they wear: Huggies®! Thanks to their unbeatable design, diaper blowouts have not been a common experience for us (in fact, it's happened only once in 3 years).

Get Fit and Stay Fit with U by Kotex Fitness

Me and fitness go way back to the year I started my period. Like with most---if not all---teenage girls, it was an awkward and confusing time evolving from "girl" to "woman." As a mother, fitness and I started having relationship problems again (that has a tendency to happen, doesn't it?). We weren't communicating anymore, and we weren't seeing each other either. We decided it was best to see other people, at least for the time being. So fitness moved on to see other people---a lot of other people, after all, my local gym is always occupied during operating hours. And me? Well, I became close with a newborn (and inevitably an infant, and toddler) who had all kinds of fun stuff coming out of all of his orifices. Good times.

Months came and went... Who am I kidding? Years. Years came and went... and before I knew it, I had arrived at a point where my son was wanting more time with his dad, and this looked like the perfect opportunity for me and fitness to start seeing each other again (wink wink!). It's always humbling to return back to the gym only to discover that you don't just pick up where you left off... but instead feel like you're starting at the beginning all over again. Thank goodness for muscle memory, at least. With persistence, I got back to where I had left off, and in much less time than when I first started working out regularly. Now, as a mother of two, I find the most important thing to staying fit as a parent is consistency. We welcomed Duke to the family two months ago, adopted straight from a shelter shortly after he was surrendered. What can I really say about the state this cat was in when we first laid eyes on him? He was in poor shape, to say the least. Grossly underweight, and his beautiful, long apricot-colored hair was heavily matted. The volunteer who spoke with us informed us that his entire underside had consisted of so much matting, that they had no choice but to shave it off. To boot, his tail was on the slender side, looking disproportionate to his shape and general size, an indication that his nutrition wasn't where it should be. We knew immediately that there would be a lot of work involved, but we knew where Duke belonged: home.

The "road to recovery" for Duke had to begin with the most essential task: getting him on a wholesome diet that offered the nutrition needed to make him happy and healthy. I knew nothing less than an amazing food would be suitable, considering that our feline friends and other animal companions eat the same food every day---unlike the varied diet that most of their owners maintain. Naturally, I turned to Wellness as the source for not only adequate, but optimal nutrition to establish and maintain Duke's health. And let me tell you, he was happy with this dry cat food from the get-go! I quickly discovered that Duke is a picky feline, and not just any food will do. He prefers certain flavors, and textures, to others. Through trial and error, I've found he won't even walk up to bother sniffing some foods---whether wet or dry---and impatiently paw at others before I've even managed to finish opening the packaging. Standards certainly suited to royalty, I'd say.

Wellness® Complete Health™was a selection that Duke simply couldn't eat fast enough. I was very pleased to find the wide range of Wellness products available at my local Petsmart. He loved it immediately. His preference? The Wellness® Complete Health™ Grain Free Adult with deboned chicken and chicken meal. He enjoys this recipe so thoroughly, he will happily chow down a few pieces as a treat between feedings, and even choose it over several brands of cat treats! Making More Time for What Matters in 2017

If live with a child is busy and complex, life with multiple children is something else... Perhaps pure and utter, irreversible hair-pulling-and-breaking-down-in-tears kind of chaos? Sound familiar? Okay, so it may be a bit of an exaggeration on most days. But the hard days certainly feel that way.

My son, Everest, is now 4-years-old, and baby Sienna is no longer a baby, having celebrated her 1st birthday in September. I'm still in denial about the fact that I'm the mother of not one, but two, toddlers. Yet at the same time, my 1-year-old often acts more like a 3-year-old than a new toddler struggling to smooth out her skill set. Such is life with kids. Full of contradictions. So often one thing and the opposite are true, and something neither is right. But one thing is clear: my little kids are less little each and every day. And I don't want to miss any of it.

It's not always easy. "So much to do, so little time" doesn't really begin to describe life with children and the struggle to balance work, life, and the endless stream of activities and errands. My aching arms at the ends of those days are reminders.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. How do I begin to describe your worth when you gave me something invaluable. I will never forget what it is you gave to me. The gift to soak up every immeasurable moment that is gone too soon. The day will come when I will no longer reach for you, as my daughter will no longer reach for me as she does now. And I think of that day to come with a heavy heart. But it is not goodbye. No... Family Traditions, Holiday Cheer, and Honey Bunches of Oats®

It's here. The holiday season. I know what you're thinking... No! Really? Already? You're joking. The time that passed so slowly when we were children--worse than trying to run in quick sand while carrying an entire marching band on your shoulders---is little more than a blink of an eye to a parent. I'm right there with you! But I have to admit it, even though it's terribly cliche to do so. It really is the most wonderful time of the year. My husband, who works tirelessly all year long to provide for our family, has more time off in the last two months of the year than it seems like he receives in the rest of the year combined. Like everyone else, we slow down. We breathe. We laugh and play with our children, and the kids soak up every second of it.

Funny story. Last year, we picked up some cups of hot cocoa and went to a Boy Scouts tree lot to pick out a Christmas tree as a family. After moseying down each aisle, we all eventually agreed on a very lovely Noble Fir that wasn't too tall or too short, not to sparse (Charlie Brown Christmas Tree, anyone?) nor too busy. It really was just right. Now all that was left... was to take it home! Mind you, this tree lot was all of three blocks from our house. I reasoned to my husband that we should walk back to our house and he should drive his work truck back over to pick up the tree. Simple, right? My husband must have had pixie dust sprinkled on him without my knowing it---that, or the sugar from the hot chocolate went to his head. But he was struck with the urge to carry our Christmas tree home. I couldn't talk him out of it. So carry it, he did. It took him half a block to realize it was heavier than he imagined it would be and to start regretting it. But he managed it! The tree came home with us, carried home in a true labor of love... and it was a perfect fit in our living room.

It's the memories like that that make the holiday season---and the ensuing holiday spirit---so much fun! Our Christmas traditions are still changing and evolving, as we like to try different things. But it's been a fun experience to blend together traditions from my husband's family and from my own upbringing into a hybrid form for our own children. We open presents on Christmas Eve (his) and eat our Christmas dinner at mid-day and enjoy it for dinner as well (mine). For Thanksgiving, we have pie for dessert, but for Christmas we skip the pie in favor of a divine Yule Log cake. At the end of the day, it's not even about the presents. It's about the things that we can't buy. The memories, the time, and the love.

Celebrating South Sudan's 5th Birthday with CARE
