To promote literacy in impoverished communities around the world through primary education for children. We envision a world in which each and every child is literate regardless of geographic location or socioeconomic status. We believe that education is the foundation from which the destitute are empowered to achieve the self-determination needed to improve their lives and the lives of those in their community. Our Goal: Educate. Empower. Emancipate.

On Dec/02, a Sunday evening, around 120 guests gathered for a noble cause of supporting children’s literacy at a gala evening of entertainment, fine dining and a passionate conversation. The evening was dedicated for the Foundation for freedom and its noble cause of “Education”. The event was held at around 6 pm in the vibrant city of San Francisco’s elegant New Delhi Restaurant.

The evening started with volunteered entertainment show featuring solo singing by 17 years old Kidane and own poetry readings by Maria Peeple and Brook Barman that enthralled the audience. Then our own surgical resident duo Nina and Shailvi excelled in their scintillating dance performance. The entertainments ended with the finale of magic show by our Cyrus Stoller that was really spellbinding.

Secretary Joya made an appeal for funding for running our school in Haiti, Sujata talked about our school for the deaf, mute and blinds in India. Dr. Richard Godfrey gave his closing remarks making special appeals for support from our donors and sponsors to help us continue on our mission of education for the needy in the developing world.

The food and entertainment was followed by networking and conversations.

The global financial forecast continues to be gloomy. It is more difficult than ever to meet our goals of promoting literacy in the developing world. Our May 2012 fundraiser at the Golden Peacock Banquet (Hayward, CA) featured live Bollywood-style music and dance, but the event did not bring in the hoped-for funds.

However, we were still able to increase our commitment, and now support 26 schools in 7 countries!

"Pate Bhar" - The Midday Meal Program at Swarachna School

‘Pate Bhar’ is the name of the midday meal program our partner, Milaan, has created at the Swarachna school in Uttar Pradesh, India.

Here's a report from local co-ordinator Dhirendra Pratap Singh:

A socio-economic survey of our school showed that more than about 85% of children come from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families.

As a result most children could not bring lunch boxes for the afternoon meal. The few who did mostly brought last night’s roti and sugar.

A health checkup brought to attention the fact that most of our children were underweight and malnourished. The problem was a serious one and had to be addressed. Children cannot be expected to study or pay attention in classes on a hungry stomach.

In June of 2011, Milaan began the midday meal program to provide at least one nutritionally complete meal as part of the school day. Currently the Swarachna Learning and Resource Centre located in rural UP, caters for meals for around 300 children on an average.

The two instant and visible impacts of the midday meal programme are,
