January 2012 – Marc Savard has been chosen to be a guest speaker on Thursday, May 24th 2012 at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta, Georgia during the RAPID 2012 trade fair. He will discuss the need in the casting industry for new, more effective way to fabricate castings in small quantities and what technologies like Nopatech™ can do to improve the development cycle of new products or the service of discontinued parts.

Marc Savard has been working for 22 years for Saguenay Foundry, assuming the presidency of the company in 2008. He has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from École Polytechnique de Montréal in Quebec, Canada.

Saguenay Foundry will also be at booth 213 to showcase its new technology, Nopatech™ from May 22nd to May 25th. Nopatech™ is a patent-pending technology for pattern-free castings that was developed by Saguenay Foundry upon the most recent technologies in robotics.

Lloyd’s Register List of Approved Manufacturer

July 2011 - Foundry Saguenay has successfully undergone an accreditation process to become a member of Lloyd’s Register List of Approved Manufacturer. Foundry Saguenay can now produce castings in Spheroidal Graphite Iron (ductile iron) up to 12,280 lbs (5.57 metric tonnes) in accordance with the requirements of the prestigious risk management and safety assurance organisation.

With this certification, Foundry Saguenay becomes the approved supplier for the heaviest ductile iron castings in Canada.

According to Marc Savard, president of Fonderie Saguenay: “This new accreditation is important to us because it demonstrates our commitment to quality. It is a statement and a way to reassure those who do not already know our foundry; we offer quality and consistency to the highest international standards”

The mission of The Lloyd’s Register Group is to enhance the safety of individuals and property by upholding high technical standards in many industries. It offers independent third-party approval to attest the conformity of products with industry specific standards. This certification is mandatory for most castings in the Naval Industry.

Foundry Saguenay has been a certified ISO 9001:2008 foundry since 2008 and was a CSA Z-299.3 for almost 20 years before that.

Eliminating pattern in casting process

December 2010 - Fonderie Saguenay introduces Nopatech™, a new fabrication alternative for gray and ductile iron parts. Using the most recent innovations in robotics and software technologies, Fonderie Saguenay produces real size patternless castings without the need for costly patterns.

Parts can now be cast one or two weeks after the reception of a customer drawing. Short production runs, prototypes and urgent repairs are done with cost savings ranging between 30% and 80% compared to the traditional pattern/casting scenario.

Jean-Philippe Lefebvre, pattern shop supervisor for Baldor-Maska, was among the first clients to use this technology: “The Nopatech™ process was very useful to us. One of our clients needed a part on an urgent basis. By using the Nopatech™ process, we saved money and, most importantly, time, because we couldn’t wait after pattern fabrication. When we received the cast part, one week after ordering, we measured it and the dimensions were as good as it would have been with a pattern. The surface finish was also very good. We will not hesitate to use this new process again in the future“.

Nopatech™ Is a 9 axis robotic cell that machines blank sand moulds in sizes from 20” X 20” up to 115” X 115”. It also produces cores, providing a complete solution to a wide variety of casting applications.

This new patternless technology is an alternative to non-environmentally-friendly polystyrene foam patterns and waste producing weldments. Castings offer flexibility in design and optimal weight distribution compared to other metal fabrication processes, and are now competitive in both price and lead time thanks to Nopatech™.

Carousel for fast moulding of medium-sized production runs

With this, our employees can easily create a no-bake sand mold from an existing pattern, use vibration to ensure sand consistency and then start over with the next part while the first one solidifies. At the other end, the mold gets painted if necessary before the cope and drag are assembled, ready for pouring.

With this, Saguenay Foundry will be even more competitive on medium-size production runs, offering our clients better quality at the same time.
