Smitten. Temptress. Zeductive.

These and other appropriately named blends will be poured by Four Brix Winery of Ventura at Valentine ‘n Wine, a three-day event designed to woo people to area wineries by offering a sweetheart deal on tasting fees.

Seven wineries in Camarillo, Oxnard and Ventura will participate in the promotion, which will run from Friday to Sunday.

Passports good for tastes at each location are $45 per person or $35 to $40 if bought in conjunction with a hotel package or in advance at http://www.vcwines.com. Regular tasting fees are $10 or more per location.

“With the romantic names of our wines, we definitely fit in with the Valentine’s Day theme,” said Karen Stewart, Four Brix’s director of operations.

So does the winery itself. Stewart’s husband, Gary Stewart, is the winemaker, and the Stewarts are one of three Simi Valley-based couples who own the winery and help create of its vintages.

During Valentine ‘n Wine, the Stewarts and company will pour tastes of Smitten, a viognier-marsanne blend; Temptress, a blend of tempranillo, mourvedre and Grenache; and Zeductive — zinfandel and petite sirah — along with Rhondezvous, a French-inspired blend of Grenache, syrah and mourvedre.

“And for the Italians, there is Scosso,” Karen Stewart said, referring to the winery’s Super Tuscan blend of Sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon and merlot.

Cheeses and locally made Chef Stroh’s Pestos will be available for tasting with the wines, Stewart said.

Now in its third year, Valentine ‘n Wine is organized by the Ventura County Winery Association.

It is the first year that Four Brix will participate on its home turf. Previously in operation at a custom crush facility in Paso Robles, the winery last year offered its tastings at a wine bar in Thousand Oaks.

When it moved into an industrial park complex at 2290 Eastman Ave. in September, Four Brix became the first full-scale winery and tasting room to open in Ventura since the owners of Leeward Winery retired and closed up shop in 2007.

Also returning to Valentine ‘n Wine this year are the Camarillo wineries Bella Victorian Vineyard, which has a tasting room and bistro at 2135 E. Ventura Blvd.; Camarillo Custom Crush, a working winery and tasting room at 300 S. Lewis Road, Suite C; Cántara Cellars, a working winery and tasting room at 126 Wood Road, Suite 104; and San Vicente Cellars, a working winery and tasting room at 537 Constitution Ave., Suite D.

Oxnard wineries participating in the passport event are Herzog Wine Cellars, a working winery, tasting room and restaurant at 3201 Camino del Sol; and Magnavino Cellars, a working winery and tasting room at 961 N. Rice Ave., Suite 5.

Each will offer “flights” of five wines. Many of the participating wineries also will offer food pairings, live entertainment and special prices on bottle and case purchases.

January 2012

Reflections of 2011

It’s hard to believe that 2011 is already over. I’ve been writing this column for a year now and it seems that I have so much to share and so many wines I want to talk about.

So, what I want to do is put 2011 behind me with my thoughts of what I have learned and accomplished in my wine world. Though I am retired, I still have had the luxury this year of visiting several wineries in my travels and going to many wine tastings though the wine trade. I have been fortunate to taste close to 1000 wines throughout the year and have formed opinions on several of these.

What I have tried to do in this article is list one or two of my favorite wines, by varietal or country that I have found to be reasonably priced, easy to find, and not break the pocket book. While these may not be the best wines in each category, I have found them to be some of my go to wines. These wines listed are available at fine retailers in Ventura, and I will list the retailers later

My favorite NEW winery is DAOU winery in Paso Robles. They are the highest elevation winery in Paso, and make outstanding French style Cabernets and Rhone style reds and whites. Situated high above the valley off Adelaida Road, this is a must visit winery.

My second favorite new winery is right here in Ventura! Four Brix winery opened three months ago on Eastman Avenue. Please go and support them, as they have very good wines that can you can taste AND purchase there. They are also part of the Ventura Wine Trail.

My pick as “Wine of my year” is: La Serre Nuove ’09 by Ornellia
Below is a list of some of my favorite wines by varietal or country that I truly enjoyed this year.

Cabernet Sauvignon
Camus ’09
Upper Cut ’09

Pinot Noir

Syrah
Andrew Murray TourLes Jour ’08

Zinfandel
Frank Family ’09

Italy
La Serre Nuove ’09 by Ornellia
Frescobaldi Nipozzano ’07

Some or all of the wines can be found at the following retailers in The Ventura area:

- Four Brix Winery
- Carpenteria Wine Company
- Ventura Wine Company
Ventura Music Week is an annual celebration of Ventura’s thriving local music scene. Step away from the screen and enjoy some quality time with our local Ventura Musicians.

Four Brix Winery will be hosting The Ventura Jazz Collective made up from a group of musicians that play and love jazz – the great American art form. We enjoy performing straight ahead jazz in various formats, ranging from a duo of guitar and bass to a vocal sextet. Available to play shows, private events, and clubs the VJC is dedicated to providing great jazz that engages but never intrudes, invites but never overwhelms.

The VJC is comprised of seasoned musicians that include guitar, sax, flute, keyboards, percussion, bass, and vocals. We are familiar with jazz standards and enjoy playing all styles from Latin to Bebop, from Swing to West Coast Jazz. The VJC can swing gently or swing hard, depending on what the venue requires.

Eventually, they decided to share their winemaking experience with others and formed Four Brix Winery, named for their four favorite “sweet” spots for growing grapes – France, Spain, Italy, and California. Gary and Karen Stewart were on hand during our visit to Four Brix Winery. Gary knows a lot about wine, winemaking, and the history of wine. It’s really amazing how much he knows and you can taste the enthusiasm in the wine he makes. Since our visit was during the fermentation process, we were allowed to “punch down” the grapes in the fermentation vats and smell the fermentation in full swing. The aroma is wonderful!

Let’s take a look at the blends that Four Brix Winery offers:

Smitten 2010 is light gold in color and is a perfect blend of Viognier and Marsanne. Crisp and light in the mouth, the floral aroma has hints of peaches from Viogner. The finish has the essence of green apple and slight mineral taste from Marsanne.

Roseo 2010 is a blend of Grenache and Zinfandel. It has a bright raspberry color, intense fruit flavors of strawberry and watermelon, yet is made in the French Provence style, completely dry, well-structured and balanced with a lingering finish. This is a great sipping wine. Thumbs up, way up!

Temptress 2008 is a blend of Tempranillo, Mourvedre, Grenache, Petite Sirah, and Zinfandel. It begins with a light earthiness and then moves into mocha with a hint of strawberry. The tannins from the Tempranillo are soft and emerge into cocoa with some dark cherry, tobacco leaves, and a bit of raspberry. The after taste is bold; reminiscent of fresh baked bread in a warm hearth.

Scosso 2009 is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. It has a ruby color with a bouquet that opens up more and more as you indulge. It drinks well now and has enough tannins to age for years. There is richness on the front end and the viscosity evokes a feeling of heavy creaminess like cream soda without the carbonation. The finish has a touch of blackberries and will last all night. This has a very smooth yet spicy end. This is great for sipping paired with some good cheese. Thumbs up, way up!

Rhondezvous 2009 is a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, and Counoise. It has a medium-ruby color. The nose is a combination of black cherries and tobacco. The full-bodied depth is rich in black cherries and vanilla with hints of raspberries and nutmeg. There are solid tannins to carry it through more aging, if you can wait. I found it to be bold and spicy with a strong aroma.

Plan for a full day or weekend up in Ventura and make Four Brix Winery one of your stops. It is part of the Ventura County Wine Trail. There are also shopping options like the Camarillo Premium Outlets and attractions like Ronald Reagan Library to keep you busy.

With our first vintage in 2008 we thought there was an over-concentration of Zinfandel in California, being the official grape of the State. So we made little of our Zinfandel-led California field blend we call Zeductive®. We found out quickly that the grape, Californian’s like to call their own, is still very much in demand. We sold out of Zeductive® in a very short time and have had numerous inquiries as to when we would be releasing the 2009 vintage. We are happy to say that Zeductive® is now in the Brix House!

Our version of the old California field blend is made from Zinfandel sourced from a famous West Side Paso Robles Vineyard and paired with our special Russian River Petite Sirah from Sonoma. This truly is a California field blend bringing wines from two regions, one from Central California, and the other from the northern part of the state.

Zeductive® will take the place of Roséo® in our tasting room line up. Roséo® has left the Brix House and will be back next spring just in time for your Summer BBQ.

We also now have our Grenache-led 2009 Rhondezvous® and Sangiovese-led 2009 Scosso® joining the line up. Four Brix is very excited to share the entire 2009 collection.
