Academic Freedom, the American Anthropological Association, and the American Association of University Professors

Times are tough these days for our educational establishment, especially higher education. The Trump administration, in particular the Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights, and now the Justice Department, which is taking over the duties of the former, has been coming down hard on universities that have allowed the pro-Palestinian goons to run amok. Millions of dollars in research funding are being cut off to major universities that have been the worst offenders. The outrages of organizations like Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), with their post-October 7, 2023 encampments and harassment of Jewish students, their faculty enablers (Faculty for Justice in Palestine-FJP et al), as well as the inaction of cowardly administrators, have brought sharp focus on the deterioration of our universities.

Recently, Washington University of St Louis and Vanderbilt University commissioned a study that concluded that within academia in general, the chief culprits have been in the humanities and social sciences (something that should have been obvious for years). The result, the study concluded, has been a decline in the quality of professional scholarship, which has given way to political advocacy. One of the fields of study that drew specific attention in the report was anthropology. The report is dated April 5, 2026.

Not surprisingly, that brought howls of indignation from the American Anthropological Association (AAA), even though they themselves voted overwhelmingly in 2023 to endorse an academic boycott of Israel, as pointed out by the Amcha Initiative, an organization founded by now-retired University of California professors to expose and combat campus anti-Semitism. Personally, speaking as someone who taught (part-time) at the university level for 20 years, I find it ironic that so-called academics, who preach about academic freedom, are now demanding that the two universities in question rescind the report they (the schools) commissioned because it offers a differing point of view from the AAUP- and because it criticizes what is happening today in our universities. Aren't universities, by their very definition, supposed to be places where contrasting viewpoints are discussed in an open and civil manner? How instructive it is that both the AAA and the AAUP, in their respective statements, betray their own hypocrisy? It is one thing for these organizations to respond and defend themselves against the criticisms in the report; it is quite another to try and have the report rescinded, as did AAUP.

Would it be a gross exaggeration to compare the "rescinding" of the above report to the March 1933 book burning by Nazis, which primarily occurred on German university campuses all over the country? Perhaps the learned professors of the AAA and AAUP would like to rescind (remove) books by people like Thomas Sowell, William F. Buckley, or Dennis Prager from all university libraries (if they even exist in those libraries). To rescind that report from the files of the above-mentioned universities would be to silence an opposing point of view. It would be against everything a university is supposed to stand for, something which, in fact, has been forgotten by far too many universities for years.

But that is the tactic of the academic left: If it doesn't conform to our point of view, it must be suppressed, whether it be a critical report, a speaking event by a conservative, a Republican, or by someone who is pro-Israel. They consider disruptions, harassment of Jewish students, encampments, and occupations to be "freedom of expression", but a written report analyzing problems and shortcomings in the university? That must be "rescinded".

The plain fact is that the report commissioned by Washington University of St Louis and Vanderbilt and the reactions of AAA and AAUP once again demonstrate that our universities are in major need of serious reform-for the sake of professional scholarship.

For most of the past century, Turkey has been a secular country. Even under Erdogan, I seriously doubt that sharia law would apply in Turkey. As I occasionally do, I am cross-posting an article by Tammi Rossman-Benjamin, co-founder of the Amcha Initiative, which is dedicated to exposing and confronting campus anti-Semitism.

This article has to do with a recent study commissioned by Washington University of St Louis and Vanderbilt University that concludes that every discipline in the humanities and social sciences that was examined is guilty of substituting political criteria for proper scholarly criteria, resulting in a deterioration of scholarly standards. The study also highlights anthropology as a prominent example.

Not surprisingly, this drew a sharp rebuke from the American Anthropological Association (AAA). Both the study and the response from AAA are linked in Rossman-Benjamin's article, which appears in the Washington Examiner.

What is most striking about Rossman-Benjamin's article is that she points out that the AAA itself provided People's Exhibit 1 to the charge when it became the first major professional organization in an academic field to endorse the academic boycott of Israel, one of the most politicized topics in American academia today, if not the most. The impact on Jewish students of this massive academic campaign against the Jewish state of Israel has been well documented over at least the past two decades-including on this site.

There is little I can add to the above-mentioned links, and this is purely anecdotal, but I vividly recall when I attended two presentations on the same date (February 8, 2011) at the University of California at Irvine when an anthropology professor by the name of Jeff Halper spoke. Halper, an American Jew who emigrated to Israel, has repaid his adopted country over the years by traveling the world and condemning Israel in terms of its treatment and relations with the Palestinians. On the second occasion he spoke that date, he warned the audience about a secret weapon the Israeli's allegedly possessed called spectral dust. According to Halper, when this substance was programmed with the DNA of an Israeli target and released into the atmosphere in a particular area, it would locate the target individual (presumably a Palestinian) and kill him or her. I should add that in his earlier appearance during the day, he was the guest lecturer of a UC Irvine professor's class.

To me, this is an example of what the above study is all about.

The history

Saman Abbas was killed in Novellara, Reggio Emilia, on the night of April 30-May 1, 2021. The body was buried in a plot of land adjacent to an abandoned farmhouse not far from the residence where the girl lived with her parents and a brother. Dismissing the original theory of a voluntary departure, the investigations focused on the theory of a family crime, thanks also to the testimony of the young girl's then-fiancé. Images captured by surveillance cameras at the farm where the Abbas family worked showed some people walking towards the fields with digging tools in the hours prior to the alleged disappearance of the girl. Also reinforcing the suspicions of the investigators were the family's movements in the following days: the parents returned to Pakistan, while the uncle and the cousins tried to disappear, moving between France and Spain. All of the accused, at different times, were arrested and extradited to Italy. In November 2022, after information was provided by the uncle, the girl's remains were found. The autopsy confirmed that she died from strangulation. In February 2023, the trial opened in the Criminal Court of Reggio Emilia: The parents were sentenced to life imprisonment (the mother in absentia because she was still wanted), the uncle to 14 years, and the cousins acquitted. The public prosecutor appealed the sentence, maintaining that all the family members had played a role in the murder. In April 2025, the Appellate Criminal Court of Bologna partially overturned the verdict in the initial trial, sentencing the cousins to life imprisonment and the uncle to 22 years in prison. I am cross-posting an article from RAIR Foundation USA in which Robert Spencer of Jihad Watch effectively refutes claims made on a Tucker Carlson interview with JD Hall, a controversial American theologian, in which Hall claimed that under the Ottoman Empire's control over the Holy Land, Christians were well treated.

There is very little I wish to add to Spencer's rebuttal. After all, he is the true expert when it comes to Islam's persecution of other religions. In truth, there is no real Muslim-majority country in which non-Muslims are treated with equal rights and equal respect. To do so would contradict Islam's very teachings, as Spencer points out.

I was once an admirer of Carlson, but he seems to have come to the conclusion, in my opinion, that it is more practical to take the side of Muslims against Jews and Israel since there are more of the former than there are of the latter. I take the opposite view based on what I think is the moral position and that Christians and Jews are both considered by Islam-not every Muslim on the planet- but by Islamic teaching to be its enemy.

During the 1980s, I was living in Milan, Italy, and our apartment was literally across the street from the famed San Siro Stadium. Try as I did, I just couldn't get excited over the game. I went to one game and left before it was over.

In 1990, I had occasion to actually attend the World Cup in Italy in an official capacity (DEA) as we werer attempting to capture the leaders of the Cali cartel, who we thought would be attending the games since Colombia had qualified for the Cup. While the games didn't particularly interest me, I was impressed by the sheer spectacle that the international fans brought.

However, I have no interest in paying exorbitant prices to attend any of the games, and except for three games (Portugal-Croatia, Argentina-Cape Verde, and Mexico-England), all great games, I have not watched any of the games on TV. We did pull for Mexico since the Missus is from Mexico.

While there have been a couple of unfortunate incidents, as is to be expected with this sport, it seems the games have gone off very well, in the US, Mexico, and Canada, which are hosting the games. All in all, it seems that the foreigners attending the games are enjoying themselves and are impressed with the US. and the other host countries.

But now, the integrity of FIFA, the international body that oversees the games and which is notoriously corrupt, has once again been called into question.
