I have been holding on to my 2017 Rifle Paper Co. Calendar forever, hoping to find some time to do something fun with it. The gorgeous designs were just too lovely to throw away. Well, today was the day! It really was a quick and easy project, and I was thrilled to find multiple ways to repurpose the floral pages. Last Minute Thanksgiving Decor Tour

Ok, so I know I should be showing you my Christmas home decor tour right now, but let's be honest, I barely got this done before my guests arrived! It’s been almost impossible this past year to keep up with decorating my home for the holidays with so much time being spent at the store. Is it just me, or did this year go by so quickly? Even though my home decor has been lacking, I have thoroughly enjoyed decorating my sweet customers' homes and the shop with new finds! I was only able to do a little decor the night before Thanksgiving, and sadly I did not decorate to the scale I would have liked. And, I did not have time to decorate my mantle as I normally would have. I chose to concentrate instead on the entry way, dining table, and buffet areas. The dining table was my favorite! I layered silks, cotton, berries, pinecones and fresh flowers down the center of the table with tons of votives. Candlelight makes every gathering a little more special...when I can remember to light them! The icing on the cake was the vintage amber glass turkey my mother gave me years ago when I hosted my first Thanksgiving at our home in Tyler, and my collection of vintage Thanksgiving postcards. Everyone enjoyed the reading the postcards and marveled at the dates they were sent! We were blessed to host both families at our home and I really wanted things to be special. I wish I could enjoy the colors and scents of fall a little longer, but it's on to Christmas we go in a flash lol! I thought I would share a few photos before I transition to Christmas decor. Hopefully, I will be decorating sooner than the night before!

Farmhouse Kitchen Essentials

One of my favorite spots in my home to shop for and decorate is my Kitchen. I have always felt that the kitchen is the heart of the home, and where everyone always seems to gather. I know in our home, it seems like we spend most of our time in there! Some of my most cherished memories growing up are those of my mother cooking and baking in our kitchen, and her kitchen is still the BEST place on earth to be at lunch or dinner time!

I LOVE vintage and farmhouse in the kitchen! I have vintage jello molds, embroidery, and a very old wooden cabbage cutter hanging on the walls. I love accenting with vintage jadeite, stoneware and yellowware mixing bowls, old scales, floral tea tins and canisters, cook books and I could go on and on!! I feel like my kitchen tells a story, and it's fun knowing that these items had a life before me! The nostalgia of both styles creates such a warm and comforting space to cook, bake and spend time with family and friends. For the past few months, it has been almost impossible to post on the blog weekly as I had planned. Almost immediately after going live with the Fox & Fig website, we decided to begin setting up shop at a monthly flea market. We had no idea how much work would go into this new endeavor. In the midst of this we were also dealt some heavy blows involving the health of each of our parents, and within days of each other, they were both in the hospital in another town. It has been a test of our strength and endurance. It's amazing what you can do when faced with adversity. As we embark on our third month setting up for the show, I thought I would share some pictures from our last two booths. We learn a little, cry a little and laugh a lot. Renovation Realities: The Dirty Stinking Truth

Remodeling a house is supposed to be fun, right? It's usually portrayed to be an amazing adventure on HGTV. Everyone is smiling and energized, bargains and freebies are constantly found (Look at the free fixtures for our bathroom we just found out in a field! Now we have $3,000 extra for that Pottery Barn sectional we wanted!), countless numbers of friends and family who just happen to be plumbers or electricians and have all the time in the world to help out, and much to my amazement, these renovations are done in a weekend or in 4 weeks.

Well, I am here to tell you that if you have not already survived, yes, I said survived, a full home remodel and you are planning one, you may want to stop reading before I burst your Pinterest Dream Home Board bubble. I want to be the voice of reality and reason for you. It is not what it is always portrayed to be and quite honestly I cannot figure out why we keep doing it. Yes, this is not the first time. We have been on this journey before. Now, I have not had the blessing and experience of childbirth so I cannot make any comparisons or claims, but I have been told many times by friends that if they had remembered the sickness and pain from the first pregnancy and birth, they might not have done it a second time. What is it about time that dulls the memory and plays tricks with your decision making?

Don't get me wrong, the remodels have been good financial investments in the long run and we have definitely enjoyed the results (I also immensely enjoy the end result of getting to decorate), but there are many things to think about that are not shared in a 30 minute DIY segment.

I have been fortunate to have a boyfriend with a construction and carpentry background. So far, there has been nothing he couldn't tackle or engineer. Had he not had the years of experience, we would probably still be back in that first house. With that said, no matter how much talent and skill anyone has, remodels are hard. Also, there has to be time to do this work and there has to be motivation. Who wants to hang drywall on Saturday when you could be watching a movie on your couch or doing ANYTHING else!!!! This seems to be our only roadblock now, but let me share with you some points to ponder before you begin your renovation.

First, there is going to be dust everywhere.......EVERYWHERE!!!! If you have allergies or a small child this might be a big hurdle for you. You can clean it, but it will be back in 15 to 20 minutes. I am talking couches and mattresses too.

Your house is going to smell like a chemical waste dump. Again, important to know if you have allergies, small children or are pregnant.

Nothing is ever as easy as it looks. That wall you want to knock down; there's something important in it!

Estimate your time to do the project......then double it. Again, nothing is as easy as it seems and the days are shorter than you think.

Friends and family usually don't have experience and they don't have time to help. This baby is YOURS, and everybody knows it!

That "free" cast iron claw foot tub: it weighs 1,000 lbs and will not fit through the door. Very rarely do you get something for free without paying some kind of price. Think chipped wall paint and scraped and scarred door jams.

You and your significant other ARE going to fight. Yes, there will be times of laughter and a sense of accomplishment, but no greater war has ever been fought!

Ladies....be ready to break your nails and swallow a lot of dirt. Let's just say I lost a lot of pride at the city dump.

Cultured marble is not your friend and not by any means easy to remove and dispose of, and most bathrooms are covered in it.

That discount store full of second quality and surplus items is more seconds than surplus. Be prepared to live with imperfection or cough up the cash for that second kitchen backsplash you didn't budget for.

Paint colors look great at the paint store; but, in reality, not so much in your house. Leave the Battleship Gray for the US Navy (our living room looked like a prison cell)! Make sure you budget for the infinite number of paint samples. Your walls are going to look like a patchwork quilt.

Be open to change. That granite you want....it's not on sale. Your plan can be very different from reality.

Curb your buying. The more you have in your house, the harder it is to work on. This coming from the person paying $129.00 a month for a storage building, and still shuffling things from room to room.

A house that was heavily smoked in hits the budget harder than one that was not. Zinsser Cover Stain by Rust-Oleum will be your best friend.

Plumbers and electricians are even more expensive than you think. Get many estimates.

Make sure you get a home warranty if you are purchasing a home to remodel. That has saved us a lot of money (tree root in the sewer line....ouch).

If your parents or in-laws have an extra room in their house, go ahead and make your reservation now. Thanks Mom and Dad!

I hope I haven't totally scared you or changed your plans. My goal is only to prepare you for the reality that those TV shows we all love do not. I am always here for advice and questions. Stay tuned for our remodel story and photo gallery.

Fall Decor Around My Home

Trying to open a shop is stressful and time consuming! I have fallen behind on my seasonal decor, but I am trying to play catch up. I was able to put some fall decor touches throughout the inside and outside of the house. Hopefully, I will add in my Halloween decor tomorrow. Here are some decor photos so far. There are also some sneak peeks of products that will be available when my shop opens this week. Are you having trouble keeping up with the decor seasons as well?

How many of you dread the weekly task of trying to keep your house and your life organized? I'm pretty sure a lot of hands are in the air right now! I have been pulling my hair out for awhile now trying to figure out a way to simplify things and help my brain feel less cluttered. There are tons of plans and charts on Pinterest and after searching through many, I found one that works best for us. I also wiped the dust off my sassy little Kate Spade Planner and decided to take charge! I now use my planner to track my day and write down all the things I need to do instead of trying to hold it all in my head. It's amazing the sense of calm that alone brings! I am tracking my water and food intake, which was something else that I needed to see in writing! I am also using it for my daily task/to do list. Since I have started using this planner, I have noticed other great changes happening. There is something about organizing one area of your life that spills over into others. Jason and I have now started walking every morning. It has been a wonderful kick in the butt and I am already feeling the benefits with my health and energy level!

The other piece of the puzzle for us was to figure out a way to keep up with all the things we needed to do around the house. That's where this lovely chore chart came into place. I found this one that worked for our life on Pinterest. You can find the free printable chart on a great blog here. There are tons of them out there you can customize to fit your own needs. I feel like I can never stay on top of keeping my house clean. Housework is my least favorite thing to do, and I can never seem to stay on top of it. When you live in a house that is always in a state of remodel, there tends to be lots of dust. I am always scrambling last minute when company is coming to try to clean everything in one day. I wanted a house that was company ready at any time. I also wanted to alleviate the feeling that I could never really relax in any part of my house because I was always staring at the furniture that needed to be dusted, or thinking about laundry that needed to be washed. So, instead of spending my evening enjoying a book or watching TV, I would begrudgingly grab the swiffer. Now we tackle one area at a time together, and in no time we are done. We are still tweaking this plan. Sometimes it takes a little more than 30 minutes in an area, but we also don't have to necessarily do some of the heavy cleaning every week because it is being consistently cleaned. It's such a great feeling to have everything compartmentalized into days, and to have a plan that keeps your weekend free for the fun things in life!
