The former Libyan intelligence officer Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, who was convicted of the 1988 Lockerbie bombing, has died in Libya, his brother told AFP on Sunday.

“He died an hour ago,” Abdelhakim al-Megrahi said, putting the time of death at shortly after 1:00pm local time.

The UK Foreign Office could not confirm the report Sunday, however it said it was “seeking further information.”

Megrahi, 60, was convicted in a Scottish court in 2001 for his role in the December 1998 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103. Most of those killed in the bombing of the Boeing 747 jet were Americans.

All 259 passengers and crew died in the tragedy, along with 11 people on the ground.

Megrahi was released on compassionate grounds in 2009 and allowed to return to Libya. Doctors said at the time that he had terminal cancer and only three months left to live.

Megrahi was greeted as a hero on his return to Muammar Qaddafi’s Libya after having served eight years of a minimum 27-year sentence for his role in the tragedy.

Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes at the G-8 summit reacted to the activist’s release, saying, “We welcome this development and the fact that he’ll be able to pursue a course of study here in the United States upon his arrival. We are pleased with the efforts that have been made within our own government by the State Department and with Chinese authorities and with Mr. Chen to reach this resolution.”

He explained, “There’s a village, it’s called a veterans resource village, at the end of the parade and it brings together all kinds of services for our veterans so that they know that they’re coming home to a welcoming community. And it is part of our obligation because we’ve asked our men and women in uniform to go and fight for our freedom and the security of our country, the least we can do is be there for them when they come home in a welcoming way.”

Pemmaraju asked Cantor if he thinks enough is being done to help our veterans. He responded, “I think that in the busy life that we all lead, in the challenges that working families have, in these tough economic times, it could be very easy to forget the sacrifices that our veterans have made … So I do think it’s an opportunity for us to double up if you will on our commitment to honor their sacrifice.”

The suspects have been identified as 20-year-old Brian Church, 24-year-old Jared Chase, and 24-year-old Brent Betterly. They have been charged with conspiracy to commit terrorism and possession of explosive and or incendiary devices. Brown reported that all three have a criminal history but most of it is minor and nonviolent.

Host Uma Pemmaraju asked Rauf why he is no longer connected to the project to build the mosque. He said, “It was a difference of opinion between me and the developers, but my vision is still alive. And my vision of establishing a place that can be a space where everybody from all religions can come together and build understanding and mutual respect, which is a basis for building global peace today, that’s my vision and I still hope to do that.”

Pemmaraju asked the imam if he came away with a greater understanding of the sensitivity surrounding the building of the mosque near ground zero in New York. Rauf said, “No doubt, I mean we are very very sensitive to the concerns of everyone in that area especially the 9/11 community. But the thing that many people did not know … is I’ve been an imam in that neighborhood for almost 30 years. Since 1983 I’ve been imam of a small mosque about 12 blocks north of ground zero and about 60 members of our own Muslim faith community were among those who perished, so 9/11 was a calamity to all of us.”

There are those who say condemnation by Muslim leaders of jihadists and terrorism is not enough. Rauf responded to that point by saying, “We have to work with law enforcement agencies, I mean terrorism is our common enemy, extremism is our common enemy. The discourse which has shaped and tarnished Islam as being the enemy is false and wrong and actually rather dangerous.”

He continued, “The real battlefront is not between Muslims and the West, or Muslims and Hindus, or Muslims and Jews and Christians, etcetera. The real battlefront is between the moderates of all faith traditions against the extremists of all faith traditions. Unfortunately the nature of news media today is that the bad news grabs the media attention and therefore the extremists on both sides have fueled each other and really have polarized the middle. What we need to do is we need to work together to bring together the middle and strengthen them whether it’s in India, whether it’s in Israel and so forth. And the vast majority of people are moderates and want to live together in peace and harmony.”

Regarding Syria, President Obama said, “We all believe that a peaceful resolution and political transition in Syria is preferable. We are all deeply concerned about the violence that’s taking place there and the loss of life.”

He went on to address North Korea, saying that the country has failed to meet its international obligations. Then he touched on Burma, calling it a “brighter note” and acknowledging its “transformation” and the hope that the process continues.

President Obama ended his remarks by talking about women’s empowerment, saying, “Finally, we had a brief discussion around the issue of women’s empowerment, where we agreed that both, when it comes to economic development and when it comes to peace and security issues, empowering women to have a seat at the table and get more engaged and more involved in these processes can be extraordinarily fruitful. And this is something that we will also be introducing during the G20.”
