I started to draw at 37 years of age, and since then have fallen in love with drawing. Because I love drawing and learned as an adult, I've put this blog to purpose of helping others to find resources to help them learn and start their own journey.  Before the Words: How the Companion Lab Was DrawnSketching Kindergarten FearFor years this blog has been light. Memes. Loose prompts.“Read It ’n’ Sketch It.” Three random nouns. One action or emotion. Make them coexist. Literal. Abstract. Doesn’t matter. The point was never the drawing. It was the composition. This post explores how visual storytelling can strengthen writing structure and

Where Process Matters More Than PolishBlack & White Sketchbook began as a place to share drawings. This one begins with a sketch. Not a finished concept. Not a polished idea. Just a symbol, an arrow, and a sense that something needed to be emerging. That was all I had.An infinity loop. An arrow piercing through it. A few drops of blood. And the feeling that it wasn’t resting on a surface —

Boy! It's been a very long time since I've posted anything on blogger. It has also been a long time since I've had any artwork to share on here. But with COVID and the slowdown that it has caused, I have picked up my pencil and started to draw again. My niece is an avid collector of anything Elvis Presley, and I do mean anything. She just recently celebrated her 6th wedding

Adult Colouring Pages Adult colouring books are becoming more popular, and as their popularity grows so does the price tag. I just went and bought one for my wife and the price was well over $30 CAD. That's pretty steep as far as I'm concerned.  I bought it because I was hearing all the benefits of colouring for relaxation, mindfulness, and the like. I like to draw, and I am well aware

I'm currently going through this blog and updating some old posts. The pictures in this post were originally posted July 27, 2006, but everything else is an update. When I first started drawing, after I filled a couple of sketchbooks, I wanted to save some of my art on computer so I wouldn't destroy or lose it. I decided this after a drawing session in a coffee shop and I spilled coffee on what

Figure Study: Pencil on Paper, 11" by 16" Figure Study In Pencil I drew this a few years ago, around 2002. It is pencil on paper and 11 by 16 inches. If I remember correctly, it was drawn from a picture that was in American Artist Magazine. I don't remember the artist that drew the original.  I was working through the exercises of Burne Hogarth's book "Dynamic Figure Drawing" at

I started this blog in 2006 to post some of my drawing and hopefully get some feedback on my art. I got busy. Blog got busy. Blog took many different directions. I had fun with it. Now I want to go back to the purpose I started this blog for, to post my art. I'd like to hear any feedback, critiques, or opinions. I take suggestions well, especially when they can help improve my drawing. Lovers

Just finished a new piece on my new Christmas present. I was given a laptop from my parents. I drew the following just using the touch mouse pad. It really took a while to get used to. I hope you like the result. Winter Calm

I have mentioned quite often on my art blog that an artist friend got me started in drawing. One of the methods he used was a creativity exercise where he would write four words at random on my sketch pad. The object of this was that I would merge three of the words into a drawing, and the fourth word would represent an action of the drawing, or the setting. The words did not have to be drawn

A couple of weeks ago I recieved an unusual request at my Honk'n'Holl'r blog. It was a request to draw a blogger's portrait. It seems that "Fake Dane" ask many artists to draw the very same portrait from his picture. He says that it is interesting to see how each artist will paint or draw the same subject uniquely. He then posts all portraits he recieves on his blog. I accepted his request and

Read It 'n' Sketch ItWhat is it?Well, it is a very simple creativity exercise for drawing that is based on four keywords. The keywords are prompts to inspire the creativity buried deep within us, and bring that creativity forward in drawing. Here's an exampleThe keywords werebull dozer, pear, chessboard, and the action key word was eatThis was my resultAnother exampleThe key words wereRabbit ears,

I've let this contest go a little too long, but I've also been very busy with work and have not had too much time to blog. This year so far has been brutal. Along with the winter that just won't quit. Blizzard again this weekend, and it's March. So, back to the contest. I've decided that I would award two of the best blog friends I have--blog friends that have supported my art, and have even read

Round two of GMB Pictionary is underway. This round of pics and clues is from Irene of Pregnant Pauses, who won the last round. The rules are the same and last time, just be the first to email all the correct answers to the pictionary pics. You will then become the GMB Rebel artist of the month for January with your wall placed at the top of my blog with direct linking to your blog, and you also

I'm welcoming 10 new graffiti walls (and 9 new GMB Rebels) that have come in over the past few weeks. I have been to everyone's blogs, but I do appologize that I haven't the time to write individual reviews for each blog. I will add specific posts for each new member once work settles down a bit. Each new wall will be added to the gallery, and to my sidebar. I'm also introducing a new game that

First off, I think that I am caught up with all the Globes for the gallery for Mimi's Dona Nobis Pacem effort. Mimi Pencil Skirt is still reporting on the subject as we speak! This has been the most fullfilling time I've spent in, well, I can't quite remember the last time I got involed in something quite like this. It's been a wonderfull few weeks helping put together the gallery for Mimi. The message is simple yet very clear; the idea is wonderful and easily brought forth; the dream of a peaceful world is beautiful. Can we have it? Well, I'm no philosopher, I'm just

This next wonderful graffiti wall comes from Janna, whose blog is entitled "One More Raindrop on a Bloggy Ocean". As some GMB Rebels may notice, her graffiti wall is a tad different than the rest and this is due to a little confusion on how to recieve and submit walls to the site. I think I've made it a little easier, and thank's Janna for bringing this to my attention, both by email and her

I decided to do something a little different to review Irene's Blog called Pregnant Pauses. It is one thing to find a great blog by accident by clicking on a comment made in someones blog to see who wrote those kind or witty words to the blogger they visited, but it is another to find someones blog constantly refered to in acutal posts. I've stumbled on many blogs where Irene's Pregnant Pauses has
