On February 20, 2013, Sony unveiled their newest home console, the PlayStation 4. The demo’s rendition of Vekta City appears endless, with a magnificent view that features close attention to detail on many aspects of the environment, including reflections on buildings, the depth of trees, and the flow of water, all of which can be seen within the first few minutes of the demo as you are flown over the city. Animation appears to be top notch as well, showing impressive movement by the player and non-playable characters, with impressive particle effects on explosions and fire.

The combat of the demo is standard Killzone fare, with first person weaponry and cover shooting. A unique point in the demo features your character hanging onto a flying vehicle by a rope while shooting at the enemies on the inside of the vehicle. This does an amazing job of showing off the scale of the game, as well as the physics of the game in play when enemies fall from the vehicle upon death. Items are quickly and easily navigated and swapped around as needed.

The role playing element of the game also adds some depth, as well as a bit of replayability. Experience points in the game are used to unlock skills from three “skill trees” (Shark, Heron, and Spider) which can bolster certain aspects of your abilities. The shark skills increase your health and the effectiveness of your takedowns, the heron skills boost your ranged attacks and overall speed, and the spider skills improve your hunting success and stealth. We don’t want to spoil it for you, but aside from the solid game play Far Cry 3 also has an engaging story that moves on at a great pace with a perfect balance of cinematic to game play ratio. It never feels like a movie with the occasional “choose your own adventure” option thrown in like so many other story modes these days. In mainstream review media, the game has received much acclaim and usually scored somewhere in the realm of 9 out of 10. If you have been considering giving Far Cry 3 a spin, we highly recommend it.

The game is currently scheduled for release on October 29, 2013 for North America, October 31, 2013 for Australia, and November 1, 2013 for Europe. The game is scheduled to be available on Windows PCs, the PS3, Wii U, and the Xbox 360. Ubisoft has also announced that there will eventually be a version of the game for the Playstation 4, but they have not yet given a release date for that version of the game. They have also announced that the PS3 and PS4 versions of the game will have exclusive content added.

The game will ve developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It will run on the AnviNext platform. It is being billed as an action-adventure and a steal game with both single player and multiplayer options.

The game takes place in 1715 during a time when pirates are in control of the Caribbean. Captain Edward Kenway is among these pirates and has earned himself the respect of the legendary pirate, Blackbeard. However, he has been sucked into a war that has been raging since ancient times and may yet destroy the legacy these pirates have established.

In the multiplayer option, players can choose from a cast of characters taken straight out of the golden age of piracy and engage in battles to the death. Various locations will be available to choose from, and chances are more will become available during the game’s life. Whether those extra locations will be free or purchasable DLC is unknown.

Console gamers need not worry about whether or not their machine can handle this amazing game. But those who enjoy playing games on their PC may have to worry. Ubisoft has not yet released the minimum or recommended specs that are needed to run what could be considered a next generation game. The only thing that has been announced is that the game will be for Microsoft Windows, so most likely you will need Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8. Mac and Linux users seem to be once again, out of luck.

Despite the game not even being released yet, there is a bit of controversy surrounding it. PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has already criticized Ubisoft for the inclusion of whaling in the game, though Ubisoft has said they do not condone this illegal activity.

Either way, long time fans of the Assassin’s Creed games are looking forward to Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.
