A few months of the year, I teach art to children at school, and when it comes to the contemporary art lesson, they always say : “ Is that art? I can do it too!”
Most of them they’ll change idea when we go deep in detailed lessons but the question for you is documentary wedding photography it can be confined in “ Do you just grab a camera and casually snap candid photos?”.

Me and Francesco come from an art background, having studied at university me set design and Francesco photography, where we developed a keen interest in painting, framing, and composition. But instead of the usual bridal march, a local band took the stage and performed a stunning rock rendition of “White wedding” by Billy Idol. It was a rock-infused twist on the traditional ceremony, one that fit perfectly with the couple’s personality.

The bride, ever the cool customer, walked down the aisle to the powerful sound of guitars and drums, her gown flowing behind her like a dream. The atmosphere was electric. Imagine this: a charming old castle in Umbria, surrounded by a riot of colors. Beautiful ladies in intricately embroidered sarees and dapper gentlemen in sherwani and stylish suits. You’re about to witness the most vibrant, warm, and downright fun Indian wedding in Umbria of Neesha and Karan from UK ( do you know Perugia has a direct flight to London?)

Coincidences have a way of becoming visible, and for us, this year was all about joy, colors, and Indian weddings – our Pantone 2023. Neesha and Karan’s Indian wedding in Umbria was a fusion masterpiece, breaking the mold by tying the knot in an Etruscan castle in Italy, Castello di Rosciano. They blended traditional Indian attire with global guests, spiced up the henna ceremony with personal touches, all while keeping ancient rituals alive.

In a world that’s leaning towards uniformity, their celebration was a breath of fresh air. The three-day extravaganza kicked off with a welcome dinner and a Haldi ceremony.

Alright, picture this – the scene is drenched in a warm and lively yellow, not just setting a mood but sparking an idea and an expectation. Wrapped up in all this yellow goodness, my first thought (never having been to a haldi ceremony before) was like a burst of rebirth, emotional rollercoaster, rock-solid commitment, and downright profound joy. And let me tell you, I was far from disappointed!

Now, this pre-wedding shindig, also known as pithi, tel baan, gaye holud, ubtan, or mandha depending on where you are in India, is usually a small, exclusive affair. Think select few, taking turns with gestures and words, basically creating a turmeric masterpiece on the soon-to-be-weds.

And why turmeric, you ask? Well, besides turning you into a golden vision, it’s got some killer exfoliating properties – think shedding dead skin cells and getting that glow-up. It all adds up; this ritual is like a couple’s version of decluttering, making room in the heart by letting go of what’s no longer needed.

Now, here’s the grand finale – a pure joy explosion with a mini holi ceremony, coloured powders flying everywhere! It’s like stepping into a technicolor dream where fun knows no bounds!

Mehndi Ceremony in Umbria

As an art lover and illustration enthusiast, witnessing the henna masterpieces on Neesha’s hands and feet was a delight. These symbols aren’t just designs; they’re a form of communication. It’s incredible how an ancient ritual can evolve into something so contemporary. The patterns weren’t your typical textures; they were personal, distinctive, downright identifiable designs. The evening mehndi ceremony wrapped up with traditional dances – a temptation we somehow managed to resist.

From sacred rituals to heartfelt moments, it was a celebration that left an indelible mark on all of us.

Sweet drinks flow, foot-washing in yogurt, honey, and ghee – a chic cultural experience. 3. Kanya Aagaman – The Bride’s Grand Entrance: Your grand entrance, parents by your side, a veil adding mystery – like walking your personal red carpet.
4. Lakshmi Puja – Blessings Fit for a Modern Goddess: Parents showering blessings, symbolically washing your foot – turning you into a modern-day Goddess of Wealth.
5. Jay Mala – Garlands: Exchanging garlands, sealing the deal on your new life – the ultimate promise of infinite love. Cue the heart-eyed emojis!

As a Italy wedding photographer, I have the privilege of capturing some of the most special moments in a couple’s life. And when Rosie and Dave asked us to be their Petritoli wedding photographers I knew it was going to be a day to remember.

The beauty and radiance of a blushing bride never cease to amaze us, but Rosie’s was exceptional beyond description. On her wedding day, Rosie had worn a flowing white wedding dress that made her look like a princess in a fairy tale.  And the highlights in her blonde hair caught our eyes on that warm sunny day.

The magnificence of the wedding location harmonized with the exquisiteness of the bride. The village is named Petritoli and it’s immersed in Le Marche  countryside a few kilometers from Adriatic sea. Resplendent with historic features, Petritoli is a perfect location for couples who want to have different backgrounds in one place. The town has been transformed into a wedding-city, offering a range of beautiful locations for the ceremony and reception. The historic Palazzo Mannocchi, the renaissance charming theatre “Teatro dell’Iride” where you can celebrate a civil ceremony, the main square or the town hall garden for the outdoor reception, provided the perfect backdrop for Rosie and Dave’s special day. 

Rosie and Dave exchanged vows in the charming Teatro dell’Iride ( Yes, a theatre civil ceremony !) , surrounded by their closest friends and family, and with the reception overlooking the Le Marche countryside, there was no shortage of beautiful backdrops for my camera.

Rosie is Australian, and Dave is from England. They were the sweetest couple ever. We were in seventh heavens when we were singled out among the top Petritoli wedding photographers to be the official visual witness commissioned to capture the authentic and humorous moments of their special day, and to create images that will make them happily cry, laugh, and relive their memories for years to come. 

We were equally honored to be doing a wedding shoot in a picturesque location as Palazzo Mannocchi , Petritoli. Being the Italy award-winning wedding photographer , we felt a huge responsibility to live up to their expectations. And we did indeed, which is evident in the stunning images taken.

We were able to capture the fleeting myriad of emotions and feelings of this beautiful couple during the most precious moments of the wedding. It was emotional when friends and family members made moving speeches in honor of the couple; despite the challenges posed by COVID, Rosie’s parents were able to join the celebration through video speeches, making the day all the more special. The civil ceremony ended with the beginning of a sumptuous dinner at the town hall garden overlooking le Marche countryside and dancing all night long.

Rosie and Dave opened the dance floor with fireworks in the background, and the guests could not wait to join them, thanks also to “Il Diavolo e l’Acquasanta” band that rocks! When the dancing caught on the couple decided to leave the guests to their own devices. They then started mingling with the rest of the guests to exchange pleasantries. For us, it was our moment, and we were in our elements. The chivalrous bridegroom was escorting his bride every step of the way, and it was a sight to reckon.

We thoroughly enjoyed being at the wedding of Rosie and Dave not only as Petritoli wedding photographers but as their guests as well. The attention to details in terms of the flower arrangements was impeccable. All credit goes to the Petritoli wedding designers of Turismarche. The outdoor lighting was just right. We did our best to seize any opportunity that captured the different emotional nuances of the bride and the groom. Rosie and Dave deserve nothing but the best, and we wish them the best of luck in their future lives together.

Petritoli holds a special place in my heart. My partner and I met while working at a wedding in this beautiful town, and it’s always a joy to return and capture the magic of other couples’ special days so if you want me as Petritoli wedding photographer please note that I’m just a mail away =)

They could get ready, then have the ceremony and reception all within a 50-meter walk, so guests didn’t even have to think about moving their cars between locations. Beautiful Frederica and Cristiano opted for a Catholic ceremony celebrated in the Church of Santa Maria, located in front of the Castle, across the square. The eclectic nature of the castle itself permits the celebration other kinds of ceremonies in the gardens too.

1. Trastevere/Tiberina Island

Trastevere/Tiberna Island is our immediate answer whenever we, as wedding photographers in Rome, are asked ‘which place do you suggest for a memorable photo shoot?’. Thanks to its labyrinthine streets and lively atmosphere, Trastevere is one of our favourite neighbourhoods to take photos in Rome. The area is a painter’s and photographer’s paradise thanks to its one of a kind and authentic atmosphere. Trastevere has countless hidden treasures and its scenic narrow alleyways are the perfect place for a photoshoot – it is a totally untouched side of the city. The old walls have the most beautiful textures, all in warm colour tones, like red, orange and burnt rose. Even the laundry between the houses starts to become romantic in this part of the city. 2. Testaccio /Aventine  Hill / Circus Maximus

Casual , Alternative, Iconic Attractions

Away from the hustling bustle of the main city center and the tourist mass, there is a district apart called Testaccio that is yet another perfect backdrop to take photos in Rome. Adjacent to the Tiber and Trastevere district, Testaccio has been untouched over the years. The food market with typical Roman street food is one of the best in town and the industrial archeology sites are all in this popular quarter where you can find a quiet village atmosphere. If you are an art lover you will love the murals and the MACRO (Museum of Contemporary Arts). Both make ideal spots for photos. Make sure not to miss the “Jumping Wolf Mural” by the Belgian artist Roa!

Aventino Hill is a classy residential area away from the furore of Rome. You may know Aventine Hill for the little Keyhole on the green wooden door of Knights of Malta gate. Very close to this famous location, is the iconic terrace “Il Giardino Degli Aranci”, which is a great spot to admire one of Rome’s beautiful sunsets.

With a little walk down the hill there is another lovely spot for your photo-session in Rome: Circus Maximus.

3. Ostiense  /Garbatella

Casual , POP,  Alternative

Those that make it to this location, off the beaten track, really are Rome lovers. Ostiense is the natural extension of Testaccio quarter and it is famous not only for the young nightlife but also for its alternative soul. Our favourite background to take photos in Ostiense is, without doubt, by the murals all over the streets. A truly iconic example is the masterpiece of Blu or the Wall of Fame by the Roman artist Jb Rock.When you come across the “Ponte della Garbatella”, a white contemporary masterpiece, you can understand why it is one of our favourite locations to take photos in Garbatella – the ancient working-class quarter.  The backyards of each home are an open air set where you can still breathe the authentic life of Rome.

4. Piazza Navona / Pantheon

Romantic, Iconic Attractions

Even when you are in the main historic center, with a swarm of tourists around you, the power of the buildings and narrow little streets will seduce. For our styled shoot, we recommend the Piazza Navona and Pantheon area because they are two of the most enchanting locations for any photo shoot in Rome! Naturally, we will suggest how to avoid crowds and find some secret spots in between the two main squares for the most intimate of sessions, in one of the most popular areas!

5. Jewish Ghetto /Campo de Fiori

Casual, Iconic Attractions

As well as Trastevere, Campo de Fiori and Jewish District are another main area built around narrow alleys, little squares and ancient churches. Campo de Fiori is home to an expensive food and veg market, open Monday to Saturday, but in the evenings it transforms into a vibrant hub with open air cafe. Iconic and full of interesting spots, the artisan streets are adjacent to the main square. The Jewish Ghetto dates back to 1555, when Papa Bull required all the Jews in Rome to live in one area. After three centuries it was abolished and completely reconstructed. Now, it is one of the best places to take photos in Rome thanks to its narrow little alleys and the beautiful corner named “Via Portico d’Ottavia” adjacent to “Marcello theatre”.

6. Coliseum / Roman Forum / Monti district

Iconic Attractions, Ancient Ruins, Romantic

Colosseum and Roman Forum are two of the most visited and photographed places in the world. It is the perfect set for romantic photos in Rome or for a surprise proposal as well. Whilst sunset will always be a memorable time for a shoot, we always prefer an early morning session to ensure that it is you alone in your pictures – not amongst a mass of tourists. However, if you prefer golden hour beside the Colosseum, we recommend a shoot that takes place along the Palatine Hill, Piazza del Campidoglio and the two terraces with a stunning view all over the ruins.  Monti District is just after the forum area and it is the new Hipster-alternative-artistic-trendy location in Rome. You can’t miss the last Chic pre-wedding shoot in Colosseum!

7. Castel Sant’Angelo and Vatican Area

There is no gift more romantic than one that surprises your partner – and a styled photo session in Castel Sant’Angelo and Vatican city at sunset or dusk will do just that. There are no shortage of options for backdrops in this area. They include by the river or by the Castle with its lights in the background – amongst many many others. However, we love Castel Sant’Angelo – it is one of our favourites and the perfect spot if you are looking to do a surprise proposal for your loved one or a classic photo session in Rome. The area has plenty of hidden spots as well as the famous, iconic buildings that are a symbol of our great Italian capital.

8. Trevi Fountain / Spanish Steps /Villa Borghese Park

Having a memory of this well known spot is what most tourists or newlyweds want. However, as there are gorgeous locations to take photos all over Rome, we are never overly thrilled to arrange a photo session around the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps due to the high amount of tourists from very first light. That being said, if you are really brave and you do not want to give up the chance to have this truly iconic “Dolce Vita” scenery, the best time for a photo session near the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps is in the early just as the sun rises. Our photography session in this area usually ends in Villa Borghese Park, landscaped on an elevated position along a west facing hill. With its view through the city at sunset, it is one of the most romantic in town.

9. Appia Antica Road

Casual, Natural environment , Iconic Attraction

For the discerning customer who enjoys peace, quietness and space in beautiful surroundings, the Regional Archeological park of Appia Road is the option for you. This ancient Roman road is set a few miles away from the main city center in a tranquil “ruins” setting, which is perfect for relaxing or a base for touring by bike. Not to be missed are the archeological sites  “Parco degli Acquedotti”, “Cecilia Metella Mausoleum”  or  “Villa dei Quintili”. These are just a few names from an area of rich archaeological heritage given its 2300 years of history. More information can be found on the official website:

10. Ostia Antica

Iconic Attractions, off beaten track, romantic

Having a photo session in Ostia Antica Archaeological park is a wonderful opportunity not only to discover where the day to day people lived in many a year gone by, (the Forum Area close to the Colosseum was just for Emperors or the rich), but also to have a styled photo session in one of the great ancient archeological sites of the world – without the crowds. Ostia Antica is only a few kilometers away from the center of Rome, but very few tourists come here. In addition, the little hamlet, adjacent to the park, is extremely quaint. The secluded, natural spots are ideal if you want an open air picnic with the beautiful pinewood forest providing shade.

I can’t get over how special this wedding was! I’m sure all the Umbria wedding photographers will be astonished at the views of the remarkable Borgo Bastia Creti, a secluded resort that stands out on the border between Umbria and Tuscany.
The word “borgo” in Italian means a fortified village, typical of medieval times. It consists of a manor house, a square and stables and houses for workers. All these spaces are now turned into a luxury resort that can host more than 30 people; an eclectic paradise, whether you’re planning a rustic and informal or elegant and chic wedding. Needless to say, I’m looking forward to my next wedding there, whenever that will be.
I’m so grateful to Ella and Alex, a magnetic couple with a contagious smile, who chose me to be their Umbria wedding photographer, and to Leonora Forte of Leonora weddings who coordinate and plan the event smoothly, giving us the chance to move around the event and take photographs with ease. When I find a fusion of positive elements that interweave, I can rather focus on what I love about weddings: living in the moment, being a present-but-invisible photographer to create timeless images, and having the opportunity to use my critical, artistic eye to capture the authentic vibes as well the humorous moments – the ones people don’t even notice!
A Borgo Bastia Creti wedding means being in a multifaceted structure with a ton of different corners that ensure romantic movement through the areas without losing the intimacy of the place. Here’s Ella and Alex’s plan for their beautiful wedding day:

• Preparations: Getting ready in The Limonaia and the Manor House. We took some informal and fun getting-ready photos in this area, and we didn’t miss the crew of the sweetest friends on Earth that helped with the hairstyle and makeup – and kept the groom’s nerves at bay!
• Ceremony: The heart-warming ceremony was celebrated by a dear friend of the newlyweds. It was an outdoor symbolic celebration surrounded by the olive forest, and the sound of cicadas made the entrance of guests even more magic. The exit toss was phenomenal – a wide, long tunnel of colored confetti and flowers.
• Speeches and wedding breakfast: The Manor House courtyard was home to the wedding breakfast and emotional speeches. And when everyone was busy, we took a moment for some portrait photos with the happy couple, complete with sunset colors in the background. It was so beautiful, and I bet it’s a common request for all Umbria wedding photographers!
• Dance and be happy: Shoes were optional for the dance floor in the main courtyard of the venue where guests partied until late. There are no neighbors to annoy in this secluded venue!
