Wedding Veil Shadow Box Is a Tribute to Family Love Stories

Great love stories don't fit neatly into a small box. Perhaps that's why one recent customer needed a big box – shadow box to be exact.

When Barb Coble brought in three generations of her family's wedding veils to be preserved by Framewoods, our Frame Design Director Apollonia knew she had a project that would present a challenge. In the end, she proved to herself what we knew all along: she was highly capable of creating a lasting tribute to this family of beautiful brides.

One of the veils dated back almost 100 years and was already framed with the couple's cake topper (of all things) which created some discoloration on the veil. Getting the antique veil removed from its current frame and integrating it into a new shadow box with two other well-preserved veils was the main challenge Apollonia faced. There were many strategic tucks in the fabric made to bring out the best and hide the worst.

Creating a shadow box that would fit in the customer's available space was another challenge. 18" x 40" was deemed a manageable size.

A romantic champagne-silver frame matched the veils and family wedding photos. Barb's beautiful veil create a cloud-like base at the bottom making everything appear to be floating.

Framed Buttons, a Legacy to Grandmother

Recently I turned to Framewoods Art Gallery for some home decoration and commemoration needs. I had inherited a few buttons, or rather tote containers of buttons, from my late grandmother. The buttons were framed in plastic or not framed at all, just buttons sewed onto cardboard. Some needed preserved because they were cloth.

Part fashion, part function, these buttons, many of which are antique, were special to her. I was proud to inherit some of them. She made the last decade of her life all about button collecting. She even presented educational lectures on the different kinds of buttons. I was a teenager then, and I realize now that I didn't fully appreciate her passion for this hobby. Perhaps it was more than a hobby. Either way, I knew Apollonia at Framewoods was just the person to give new life to these buttons.

A lush mat and quality frame later and my hubby and I have wonderful frames to adorn our home and commemorate my grandmother. Keeping her stitches in tack, my friends at Framewoods of Topeka took these beautiful buttons and made a wonderful memorial to my grandmother that hangs in my spare bedroom.

There's a lesson in this inheritance for me that came clanging home loud and clear. Spending time with grandma and grandpa was the real treasure. All the same, I am very proud to share this story and these photos of these framed family treasures.

Framewoods was honored to be asked to frame a photo of Monroe School, which was presented to First Lady Michelle Obama May 16 at Topeka's Senior Recognition Ceremony. It's nice to think one of our frames will be hanging in the White House.

Monroe School, which is now the Brown v. Board National Historic Site, was pivotal as a segregated school in case Brown v. Board of Education, which resulted in desegregation of schools across the U.S. The Supreme Court

Ensley Gardens Artist Thrilled with Birth of a Nation

Bert Tyrell picked up her newest acquisition today. She purchased a print of "Birth of a Nation" Wind Cave National Park by Barbara Summers Edwards available from SouthWind Gallery's last show "2009 Paint the Parks." Enamored with the original piece she came in weekly to "visit" the painting. "I love it so much I could just lick it, absorb it, take it into my soul!" Bert told me during one of those visits. That statement instantly endeared her to me and I began anticipating her next "visit." What a way to describe the appreciation of art and the perfect reason to buy it! It is always a pleasure to see the excitement from a person's soul directed at a singular piece of art. She came to Framewoods immediately after we called and told her it was ready to be picked up and she was shaking with excitement as we unwrapped the piece for her approval. Then Clay and I drove over to help Bert hang her piece in the perfect spot!

Bert is an accomplished artist herself and Clay and I was offered a sneak peek at her studio space and one of Bert's newest pieces, which is absolutely wonderful! You too can have the opportunity to see her newest piece, along with over 30 area artist's work in our Ensley Gardens Plein Aire Exhibit on September 12, 2010 from 1:30 to 3:30 at the Garden House on Shawnee Lake. The sale of the artwork will benefit the Ensley Gardens endowment, allowing the continued care of one of Topeka's greatest Treasures.

I Love Topeka's John Ary Takes Art Out On The Town

Have you discovered John Ary's website called "I Love Topeka"? SouthWind Gallery and Framewoods staff has enjoyed John's whitty and informative videos about Topeka for the past few months. John's positive approach to getting the word out about our home town is engaging and entertaining. Going to his website, you will find, he touches subjects from the work of non-profit organizations such as the Cat Association of Topeka and the Gage Bark Park to the Capital City Crushers (a women's roller derby team), and even positive picketing! He says "The key to enjoying this town is simple: open your eyes." We we have to agree.

Life long Topekan, John has dedicated a website that feature video shorts about all the great things to be found in our fair city. He says, "Topeka is diverse with a ton of great cultural events, a thriving art scene, and young people who are constantly looking towards the future. My goal with this project is to help Topekans see the wonderful opportunities that are already here and experience the unique people, local events and great places this city has to offer."

He graciously accepts suggestions from fans for his video subjects and we sent him an email asking him to consider participating in our "Take Art on Vacation" project. He enthusiastically took on the challenge and brought his own spin to highlight the various cultural art opportunities there are in Topeka and did a great job introducing our new spokesman Art. We had a lot of fun working with John and we are very pleased with his Art Adventures and Art loved getting out of the gallery for a while and to fufill Art's mission to incourage exploring the arts. (Like John said, that's a lot of art!)

Former banker finds success and satisfaction with frame shop and gallery in Topeka

But Dorothy and her canine companion might
have stuck around Kansas a tad longer had she found Framewoods of Topeka and SouthWind Gallery.

The magical land of Oz pales in comparison.

Owner and Iowa native Gary Blitsch settled in Topeka in 1962 after serving in the U.S. Navy and worked in the banking industry for most of the next three decades.

In 1992, he traded mortgages and money markets for mats and mouldings, and purchased Framewoods of Topeka, a custom picture framing business.

It wasn’t a long, drawn-out decision. Ready for new challenges, he walked into the custom picture framing studio and art gallery one day – and put in an offer the very next day.

“I didn’t originally plan to work in the business,” he says. “My plan was to hire a manager and run the business by remote control. But after getting acquainted with how it all worked, I was hooked.”

Who Is Keeping America Beautiful?

You may know that during the last First Friday Artwalk, Framewoods invited the Topeka Branch of Keep America Beautiful to share their mission with our art enthusiasts. On their website you can find all sorts of recycling information for the Shawnee County area including a directory of where you can recycle nearly anything within the area. I would definitely recommend checking out their website.

As the nation’s largest community improvement organization, Keep America Beautiful has worked for more than 50 years to inspire individuals and organizations to be more environmentally responsible. Keep America Beautiful engages more than 1,200 local affiliates and participating organizations across the nation to create cleaner, greener and more livable communities through efforts like the Great American Cleanup.

Recycling a package or product after it's been used is a good way to help our planet but not everyone thinks about how they might be able to be earth friendly when they acquire products. Shadowbox frames are different from other frames in that they are deep enough to house not just flat items—like a photograph or print—but three-dimensional objects as well. These objects can be adhered with glue or special hangers, or even placed on a ledge or shelf built inside the frame. Shadowboxes can also be designed to open and close so that the objects are removable. Interesting backgrounds and fabrics can be used to add color and dimension. Even a single sentimental item can be displayed to make a dramatic presentation.

Old photographs tell us a great deal about ourselves, our families, and our history. You may have old photographs lying around the house, perhaps hidden in the attic, an old trunk, or a shoebox.

Esmond Alleyne (pictured) was especially moved by the University of Kansas "Milestones" which documents 125 years of African American Jayhawers. We designed a frame that not only reflected the KU colors but presented the piece with the importance it deserved.

Anniversary

Save Your Treasures - Kansas Flag and Proclamation

In 1998 the White House launched the Save America's Treasures Project. As part of that program, the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of American History, conservators worked to preserve the actual American flag that inspired Francis Scott Key’s “Star Spangled Banner.” Since the flag was made in 1813, it has endured the War of 1812 and over 200 years of wear and tear. In fact, the family that owned the flag before donating it to the Smithsonian in 1912 used to give clippings of the flag as gifts. Throughout the preservation process, the flag was kept on display. Visitors were able to view the flag for a few hours each day, before and after which the flag’s display case is covered to protect it from unnecessary (and possibly harmful) exposure to light.

"I recently went to Framewoods of Topeka to get my Kansas flag and proclamation from Governor Parkinson framed. I was a legal assistance attorney (JAG) with my National Guard unit at COB Adder, Iraq from February-September, 2009. While deployed, Governor Parkinson was nice enough to fly a flag over the Capital for me and some of my fellow Soldiers, as well as issue the accompanying proclamations.

There are many materials available that we can use to protect items from the effects of environmental concerns—even those, like Old Glory, which may already be damaged. For example, there are matboards made from 100% cotton fiber (rag board) or purified wood pulp that are free of acid and lignin found in most paper products. This acid and lignin can cause chemical reactions that degrade the materials over time. By using preservation-quality matboard, we can ensure that this process is slowed dramatically. For example, the Gutenberg Bible, which has survived since the 15th century, is made of rag paper.

The glazing we use is also important in preservation. Glazing is either the glass or acrylic sheet used on the face of a frame package. These are available with properties that filter out ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight and some artificial light as well. Most of these specially treated materials filter out up to 99% of the light rays that can fade framed items.

The Art&Framing Council (AFC) offers some tips about protecting your art from light damage: Choose subdued lighting effects that won’t reflect into the glazing; never hang artwork in direct sunlight; and never use fluorescent lights to illuminate artwork since their UV concentrations are very high. (Incandescent bulbs are a better choice.)

Also, take a look at the things you have that are already framed. If you see signs of degrading materials, such as faded colors or condensation and water damage under the glazing, bring them into our shop and we’ll evaluate it with you to see if it should be reframed with preservation needs in mind. Memories Make a Special Mother’s Day

Choosing a gift for Mother’s Day can be difficult at best. Flowers? Another scarf? How do you find a gift that is both meaningful and original?

How about a collection of family photographs which deserve to be on display? What about other treasured items and are stored in a closet or attic that deserve to be seen and shared? It’ll be a one-of-a-kind gift sure to surprise and delight her.

The best thing is that it will be created just for her—and who doesn’t love a gift that’s personal? Family heirlooms make a beautiful presentation. Objects that belonged to older relatives, older photographs, and similar treasures are object stored in a box and rarely enjoyed. When framed, they come in life in an elegant shadowbox.

Pictured is a design we created for one of our customers Linda who wanted to honor her grandmother. Sunday chicken dinners were a delight for the whole family and were served on the “Chicken Every Sunday” platter in the center of the framed design. Among the other sentimental elements are favorite recipes, a collection of crochet pieces hand crafted by her grandma including gloves, booties and a beautiful center piece doily with pineapple design that symbolized her grandmother’s endless hospitality.

If Mom is a collector, then you can always choose a frame design to fit her hobby or interest. Some antique sewing tools, a special plate or piece of china, or similar item is idea for framing. Just think— you’ll not only be able to add to her collection, you can provide her with a way to show it off too.

For something more whimsical and fun, try photos of pets, grandchildren, or vacations. Or how about an original piece of art by her favorite artist? Green - Forest and Eco Friendly Framing Material Available.

At Framewoods we are always eager to help our environment. We are conscientious of our waste products and recycle everything that is possible to recycle. "I hate to see things go to waste and knowing that they will be reused pleases me." says our Framing Manager Apollonia. Our recycling efforts include glass, cardboard, paper and even metal scraps. Mat board fallouts from the mat openings are offered to local schools for reuse and discarded frames are offerd to local artists. And if you haven't noticed the Framewoods logo icon says it all!

The desire to be "GREEN" extends to the mouldings we offer, several of our suppliers offer a variety of environmentally friendly options.

Topeka frame wholesaler Bob Victor's pioneered the development of environmentally safe finishing in the picture frame industry. Today the finish Bob Victor’s has developed is a finishing process that lets the Beauty, Character, and Integrity of the Fine American Hardwoods radiate through a 100% environmentally safe finish. "The finishing materials we developed do not have a single ingredient in the formulation that carries a hazards label." Said owner Bob Victor during a visit to the Framewoods design studio. "Our finishing process is environmentally safe. This finish is as clear and smooth as glass."

Not only are their finishes eco-friendly all of their wood is milled from “Verified Sustainable American Hardwoods”. Which means they use sources that do not practice clear cutting and purchases timber from regions where the United States Forest Service said the timber is “SUSTAINABLE”.

The Biltmore and Sorrento frame collections exclusively from Larson-Juhn are both PEFC certified. PEFC is the world’s largest forest certification organization promoting sustainable forest management. This important third-party certification provides you with confidence that you are purchasing forest friendly frames and demonstrates our commitment to responsible forest harvesting.
