She purchased a print of "Birth of a Nation" Wind Cave National Park by Barbara Summers Edwards available from SouthWind Gallery's last show "2009 Paint the Parks." Enamored with the original piece she came in weekly to "visit" the painting. "I love it so much I could just lick it, absorb it, take it into my soul!" Bert told me during one of those visits. That statement instantly endeared her to me and I began anticipating her next "visit." What a way to describe the appreciation of art and the perfect reason to buy it! It is always a pleasure to see the excitement from a person's soul directed at a singular piece of art. She came to Framewoods immediately after we called and told her it was ready to be picked up and she was shaking with excitement as we unwrapped the piece for her approval. Then Clay and I drove over to help Bert hang her piece in the perfect spot!
The sale of the artwork will benefit the Ensley Gardens endowment, allowing the continued care of one of Topeka's greatest Treasures.
It was such a success that we decided to take it a step further. Today I have been designing an interactive Art in a paper doll style, let's call him Art 2.0. We are going to invite you to take Art to work with you, or out for a drink after work, or wherever—then, take a photo of you and Art together.

But that is not all! We have upgraded Art so that you can be a little more creative. We now have him in 4 NEW interchangeable outfits; of course we have the “Original” Art (Art 2.0), the "Stuffy Suit" (Art 2.1), the "Dogs Playing Poker" casual Friday's shirt (Art 2.2), the "Afterhours" I Heart Framewoods T-Shirt - yes shamless promotion on our part (Art 2.3) and the plain white T-shirt with room for your logo (Art 2.4) along with a selection of stylish pants.

We will ask you to post it on our Facebook page (facebook.com/SouthWindGallery), or E-mail it to us (info@framewoods.com) and we’ll post it for you. Next, just stop by Framewoods of Topeka with the art you want framed, and we’ll frame it for FREE!*

As Gary always says, "Our job is like getting paid to eat ice cream!" and today is one of those days with Art and me! Give us just a few more days to get all the details together and we will release Art 2.0 out into the world so that you too can have some fun with Art at work!

SouthWind Gallery and Framewoods staff has enjoyed John's whitty and informative videos about Topeka for the past few months. John's positive approach to getting the word out about our home town is engaging and entertaining. Going to his website, you will find, he touches subjects from the work of non-profit organizations such as the Cat Association of Topeka and the Gage Bark Park to the Capital City Crushers (a women's roller derby team), and even positive picketing! He says "The key to enjoying this town is simple: open your eyes." We we have to agree.

Life long Topekan, John has dedicated a website that feature video shorts about all the great things to be found in our fair city. He says, "Topeka is diverse with a ton of great cultural events, a thriving art scene, and young people who are constantly looking towards the future. My goal with this project is to help Topekans see the wonderful opportunities that are already here and experience the unique people, local events and great places this city has to offer."

He graciously accepts suggestions from fans for his video subjects and we sent him an email asking him to consider participating in our "Take Art on Vacation" project. He enthusiastically took on the challenge and brought his own spin to highlight the various cultural art opportunities there are in Topeka and did a great job introducing our new spokesman Art. We had a lot of fun working with John and we are very pleased with his Art Adventures and Art loved getting out of the gallery for a while and to fufill Art's mission to incourage exploring the arts. (Like John said, that's a lot of art!)

We would like to invite you to take Art with you to any local cultural event or on vacation, take a pic or a video, and Framewoods will give you a free custom 8x10 frame. Go to http://www.framewoods.com for more information. (Hurry, the deadline for submission to Take Art on Vacation is August 15th!)

Creativity in Kansas
Former banker finds success and satisfaction with frame shop and gallery in Topeka

“Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”

But Dorothy and her canine companion might
have stuck around Kansas a tad longer had she found Framewoods of Topeka and SouthWind Gallery.

The magical land of Oz pales in comparison.

Owner and Iowa native Gary Blitsch settled in Topeka in 1962 after serving in the U.S. Navy and worked in the banking industry for most of the next three decades.

In 1992, he traded mortgages and money markets for mats and mouldings, and purchased Framewoods of Topeka, a custom picture framing business.

It wasn’t a long, drawn-out decision. Ready for new challenges, he walked into the custom picture framing studio and art gallery one day – and put in an offer the very next day.

“I didn’t originally plan to work in the business,” he says. “My plan was to hire a manager and run the business by remote control. But after getting acquainted with how it all worked, I was hooked.”
You may know that during the last First Friday Artwalk, Framewoods invited the Topeka Branch of Keep America Beautiful to share their mission with our art enthusiasts. On their website you can find all sorts of recycling information for the Shawnee County area including a directory of where you can recycle nearly anything within the area. I would definitely recommend checking out their website.

As the nation’s largest community improvement organization, Keep America Beautiful has worked for more than 50 years to inspire individuals and organizations to be more environmentally responsible. Keep America Beautiful engages more than 1,200 local affiliates and participating organizations across the nation to create cleaner, greener and more livable communities through efforts like the Great American Cleanup.

Recycling a package or product after it's been used is a good way to help our planet but not everyone thinks about how they might be able to be earth friendly when they acquire products. Here at Framewoods we have several environmentally friendly ways to create your framing design so that you can stay green even as you preserve your treasured pictures and memorabilia. From environmentally friendly frames created with sustainable wood sources to our 100% cotton mats.

One of our favorite mat suppliers Crescent RagMat just joined the ranks of supporters for Keep America Beautiful. "We’re proud to join the ranks of other leading companies like The Glad Products Company; Pepsi-Cola Company; The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company and the Solo Cup Company in their support of Keep America Beautiful." a Crescent representative says. And we are please to support Crescent in their efforts for a greener earth.

The RagMat line of matboard has always been made with 100% cotton and provides an acid free, conservation environment for your frame design. We have prefered this mat product over paper mats for the past several years because:

Cotton is a sustainable product that reduces the use of trees for matting and mounting boards

Cotton has a natural, lasting brightness that does not require extensive chemical processing

RagMat is designed to preserve and beautify the cherished artwork and photography of individuals

So despite the natural beauty and conservation qualities of the Crescent RagMat line of matboard we can also be assured to be helping to Keep America Beautiful. Please come in to see our selection of frames and learn more about the quality of Crescent RatMat.

Design Studio Hours: Monday – Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Imagine your fondest memories hanging in the den or living room for you to enjoy every day. Souvenirs and mementos from a fun vacation can be displayed in a beautiful shadowbox.

Vacation memories can be prominently displayed in your home instead of packed away in a closet or attic. Just come in to our gallery with your items and we will be glad to create a one-of-a-kind memory—custom made just for you.

Shadowbox frames are different from other frames in that they are deep enough to house not just flat items—like a photograph or print—but three-dimensional objects as well. These objects can be adhered with glue or special hangers, or even placed on a ledge or shelf built inside the frame. Shadowboxes can also be designed to open and close so that the objects are removable. Interesting backgrounds and fabrics can be used to add color and dimension. Even a single sentimental item can be displayed to make a dramatic presentation.

Much of the fun of creating a shadowbox is in deciding which items to use. Create a vacation-themed display by combining photographs, souvenirs, and special pieces you’ve purchased while away. Or you can focus on one special vacation memory. For example, choose a collection of miniature lighthouses or seashells from a beach vacation, poker chips from Las Vegas, or a set of doilies from Europe. A shadowbox can easily become the focal point of a room. What makes a vacation shadowbox special is that it is filled with your unique, special memories and keepsakes.

We have the technical expertise to frame your treasured items in a way that will preserve them for many years to come. There are certain issues to we will discuss with you, including protecting you items from fading and other environmental hazards, as well as preventing potentially harmful chemical reactions that sometimes occur with metal, wood, or plastic mementos.

So bring your vacations memories to Framewoods of Topeka. We’ll make them part of your everyday life.

Also, for the summer, we would like you to share your vacation stories and in return we'll custom frame a favorite picture, from your vacation memories for FREE!

You may have old photographs lying around the house, perhaps hidden in the attic, an old trunk, or a shoebox.

Bring them to us and we will design beautiful framing options to help you preserve those memories and always remember when.

Esmond Alleyne (pictured) was especially moved by the University of Kansas "Milestones" which documents 125 years of African American Jayhawers. We designed a frame that not only reflected the KU colors but presented the piece with the importance it deserved.

Framing and displaying old photographs can be very rewarding and can give your family a greater sense of its own history. Photos from the past can also say fascinating things about the people in them and the time they were taken. Today, we use camera phones and digital photos so much that we forget that 50 or 100 years ago, photographs were only taken of the most important moments.

Why not bring your collection to us for framing? We can design just the right frame designs for one or many photos that you can hang in your hall, stairwell, living room, den, dining room—any room in your home. Framing old photographs can bring back sentimental moments, recapture special family occasions, and keep alive the memory of generations who came before us.

We have many different framing techniques to choose from. Colorful and textured mats or hand wrapped fabric mats coordinate well with antique photographs. Lovely gold or silver finished frames also complement these design choices and enhance the flavor of times past. Preservation and conservation matting and glazing should be considered to make your memories last a lifetime—-and beyond.

We have everything you need to capture the moment. And don’t forget that old family photographs can be one of the most thoughtful gifts.

What better way to capture that special moment than to have it framed?

Beside the many photos that are taken at these celebrations, invitations, bouquets, costumes, and trinkets are also perfect for framing. And special occasions can last forever if they are creatively framed.

We can frame just about anything. Edwin Jenkins (pictured) took his anniversary memories a step further. He had the dried flowers his bought his wife, Jan for their 25th anniversary framed. Not only did it save the flowers from dust and debris it also preserved them from the deteriorating UV rays.

We can help you to create a frame just for you. Every occasion, from your baby’s birth to first steps, to your silver wedding anniversary can be remembered each day when it is framed.

Stop by Framewoods of Topeka—we have great ideas on how your memories can last forever.
The next time you need the perfect gift, consider custom framing a piece of art, a special photo, or a memento. Flowers last a few days, a nice dinner lasts a couple hours, but frames can last a lifetime. Because so many things can be custom framed, you can easily come up with a unique gift for every occasion Here are some ideas to get your own thoughts flowing.

Anniversary
Frame a portrait of yourself or with your significant other. If the two of you have been on a recent trip, frame a special memory, like the Aboriginal painting shown right.

Baby
When someone has a baby, a great way to celebrate the occasion is with a frame to insert pictures in, frame the birth announcement, or ask your local framer if they can cut out the baby's name in a mat.

Graduation
A graduate will generally appreciate having their diploma custom framed after working all those years to get it! For those who were involved in school activities, they may also enjoy a shadowbox filled with their school memories. Of course their graduation portrait can be framed as well.

Wedding

Framed wedding memorabilia makes a great gift for the bride and groom or a treasue for their parents. Wedding pictures, invitations and flowers are all special keepsakes.

Birthdays or Just Because Days

We all have different tastes and interests. Think of something that will mean a lot, such a small quilt or painting you made for them. Everyone can use a framed mirror and you can frame it to suit a specific room decor. If you are undecided, come into Framewoods of Topeka and purchase a gift certificate.

"It is the thought that counts." This phrase is often used when referring to meaningful gifts. When you take the time to work with our designers at Framewoods of Topeka to create a one-of-a-kind treasure for someone special, they will see that you put a lot of thought into it.

As part of that program, the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of American History, conservators worked to preserve the actual American flag that inspired Francis Scott Key’s “Star Spangled Banner.” Since the flag was made in 1813, it has endured the War of 1812 and over 200 years of wear and tear. In fact, the family that owned the flag before donating it to the Smithsonian in 1912 used to give clippings of the flag as gifts. Throughout the preservation process, the flag was kept on display. Visitors were able to view the flag for a few hours each day, before and after which the flag’s display case is covered to protect it from unnecessary (and possibly harmful) exposure to light.

What about your treasures? Are there items, artwork, and photos that you would like to see stand the test of time to be enjoyed for years to come? Preservation framing available at Framewoods of Topeka can achieve this.

Jeff Bottenberg understands the importance of preservation framing for his treasures:

"I recently went to Framewoods of Topeka to get my Kansas flag and proclamation from Governor Parkinson framed. I was a legal assistance attorney (JAG) with my National Guard unit at COB Adder, Iraq from February-September, 2009. While deployed, Governor Parkinson was nice enough to fly a flag over the Capital for me and some of my fellow Soldiers, as well as issue the accompanying proclamations.

Appollonia did an outstanding job on my project and I always enjoy working with Gary and his staff as they do outstanding work!" - Jeff Bottenberg (pictured)

There are many materials available that we can use to protect items from the effects of environmental concerns—even those, like Old Glory, which may already be damaged. For example, there are matboards made from 100% cotton fiber (rag board) or purified wood pulp that are free of acid and lignin found in most paper products. This acid and lignin can cause chemical reactions that degrade the materials over time. By using preservation-quality matboard, we can ensure that this process is slowed dramatically. For example, the Gutenberg Bible, which has survived since the 15th century, is made of rag paper.

The glazing we use is also important in preservation. Glazing is either the glass or acrylic sheet used on the face of a frame package. These are available with properties that filter out ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight and some artificial light as well. Most of these specially treated materials filter out up to 99% of the light rays that can fade framed items.

The Art&Framing Council (AFC) offers some tips about protecting your art from light damage: Choose subdued lighting effects that won’t reflect into the glazing; never hang artwork in direct sunlight; and never use fluorescent lights to illuminate artwork since their UV concentrations are very high. (Incandescent bulbs are a better choice.)

Also, take a look at the things you have that are already framed. If you see signs of degrading materials, such as faded colors or condensation and water damage under the glazing, bring them into our shop and we’ll evaluate it with you to see if it should be reframed with preservation needs in mind. We’ll help you save your personal treasures with the same preservation materials and care as if they were national treasures!
Choosing a gift for Mother’s Day can be difficult at best. Flowers? Another scarf? How do you find a gift that is both meaningful and original?

How about a collection of family photographs which deserve to be on display? What about other treasured items and are stored in a closet or attic that deserve to be seen and shared? It’ll be a one-of-a-kind gift sure to surprise and delight her.

The best thing is that it will be created just for her—and who doesn’t love a gift that’s personal? Family heirlooms make a beautiful presentation. Objects that belonged to older relatives, older photographs, and similar treasures are object stored in a box and rarely enjoyed. When framed, they come in life in an elegant shadowbox.

Pictured is a design we created for one of our customers Linda who wanted to honor her grandmother. Sunday chicken dinners were a delight for the whole family and were served on the “Chicken Every Sunday” platter in the center of the framed design. Among the other sentimental elements are favorite recipes, a collection of crochet pieces hand crafted by her grandma including gloves, booties and a beautiful center piece doily with pineapple design that symbolized her grandmother’s endless hospitality.

If Mom is a collector, then you can always choose a frame design to fit her hobby or interest. Some antique sewing tools, a special plate or piece of china, or similar item is idea for framing. Just think— you’ll not only be able to add to her collection, you can provide her with a way to show it off too.

For something more whimsical and fun, try photos of pets, grandchildren, or vacations. Or how about an original piece of art by her favorite artist? The ideas are endless, but if you’re still not sure, then consider a gift certificate. This way, mom has the chance to get something framed that she alone has chosen.

And don’t forget Dad! His day is right around the corner too. What is near and dear to him? What might he want to show off in his office or den? Again, think about hobbies, collections, or something fun he’ll love to look at again and again. Drag out his old football jersey from high school, or find his service medal and give them the recognition they deserve.

This year, take the time to create a personal, one-of-a-kind gift and you’ll get thanks all year long. Visit the Framewoods of Topeka for ideas on how to create a special shadowbox just for Mom or Dad.

We are conscientious of our waste products and recycle everything that is possible to recycle. "I hate to see things go to waste and knowing that they will be reused pleases me." says our Framing Manager Apollonia. Our recycling efforts include glass, cardboard, paper and even metal scraps. Mat board fallouts from the mat openings are offered to local schools for reuse and discarded frames are offerd to local artists. And if you haven't noticed the Framewoods logo icon says it all!

The desire to be "GREEN" extends to the mouldings we offer, several of our suppliers offer a variety of environmentally friendly options.

Topeka frame wholesaler Bob Victor's pioneered the development of environmentally safe finishing in the picture frame industry. Today the finish Bob Victor’s has developed is a finishing process that lets the Beauty, Character, and Integrity of the Fine American Hardwoods radiate through a 100% environmentally safe finish. "The finishing materials we developed do not have a single ingredient in the formulation that carries a hazards label." Said owner Bob Victor during a visit to the Framewoods design studio. "Our finishing process is environmentally safe. This finish is as clear and smooth as glass."

Not only are their finishes eco-friendly all of their wood is milled from “Verified Sustainable American Hardwoods”. Which means they use sources that do not practice clear cutting and purchases timber from regions where the United States Forest Service said the timber is “SUSTAINABLE”.

The Biltmore and Sorrento frame collections exclusively from Larson-Juhn are both PEFC certified. PEFC is the world’s largest forest certification organization promoting sustainable forest management. This important third-party certification provides you with confidence that you are purchasing forest friendly frames and demonstrates our commitment to responsible forest harvesting.

Framewoods also carries FSC certified Artique Matboards from Larson-Juhl. The presence of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) logo certifies that the materials used to produce the product were sourced responsibly. Every entity that touches the product – from the logger to the distributor – must be FSC certified.

The Rainforest Alliance works with the FSC to ensure that products do not negatively impact indigenous populations, come from conservation areas, come from genetically modified trees and are not illegally harvested.

The Lexington line from Omega Moulding is a collection of 8 classic profiles presented in stunning renditions of honey, walnut, mahogany and charcoal transverse wood grain finish. This eco-friendly moulding is made from fast-growing and sustainable plantation wood, which is grown for the specific purpose of production. The finish is created from non-toxic water-based pigments, making this collection one that is right in place with environmentally conscious products of today.

Finally, the "EcoCare" Blackwood and Sherwood lines of mouldings from Nurre Caxton . "A line of moulding that's easy on the eyes and the planet".
All woods are harvested from managed forests...areas that are carefully monitored, controlled and grown using a host of modern forestry techniques. This assures our forests will continue to provide clean air and water, stunning scenery, home for wildlife and jobs.

The colors of Sherwood and Blackwood are achieved with organic, water based stains. These stains allow for the beauty of the wood grain to show through. No oils, no chemical solvents are used.

So please stop in with your next project and we will design a frame for you that is not only beautiful but environmentally friendly!
RoJene Willard (pictured) brought in one of her beautiful cross-stitch pieces to update and dress up her home for the spring.

Have you ever considered re-framing your limited edition print in the living room? If you’re like most people, you haven’t given much thought to the framed artwork in your home. And that’s okay, because a well-made frame design shouldn’t need constant attention.

But it would be wrong to think that once artwork is framed, it’s safe forever. Framing materials and procedures are constantly improving, for one thing, and something framed ten years ago is no longer state-of-the-art. Art also changes over time: it may fade and discolor, or it might cockle and warp. It might even be vulnerable to attacks by pests. A close visual inspection of your art once a year will be enough to spot any potential problems. You can either bring your artwork to Framewoods of Topeka, or ask us what you should look for so you can inspect each piece yourself.

It’s also a good rule of thumb to re-frame artwork once every ten years. Not only does it give you the opportunity to preserve your art with the best in new materials and techniques, it’s also the perfect excuse to choose new matting to match your new decor.
We can create a beautiful frame featuring your photos, medals, patches, correspondence, and any other items you r might have. What better way to show how proud you are of special war hero?

There are many ways to preserve the past and present, and framing these objects and photographs will keep them in your thoughts forever. The quantity of these objects can often be overwhelming. But we can work with you to custom design the perfect memorabilia display. This display of your cherished military memories will not only tell a story but will also honor your loved one.

An exciting way to present medals and patches might be to flank a soldier’s photograph with these items. By specially mounting and presenting these items with colorful mats, all the important highlights of a career or mission can be the focal point of a beautiful frame design.

Having more than one photo may call for several mat openings in different sizes. This creates visual excitement, and interest is sparked with coordinating mat colors. Medals and patches can be displayed beneath the photo for added dramatic effect.

Old letters and postcards can also be preserved for posterity. Documents can be raised and mounted with a float effect. Softer earth tones can be used for mounting to complement the age of the materials. A dark frame with subtle, decorative ornaments can also add to the overall design.

Preserve and honor the memory of a loved one or of your own military experiences. Bring your unique memorabilia into Framewoods of Topeka and we will offer you personalized attention and create a one-of-a-kind frame design just for you.

The style and size of the frame should be coordinated with the artwork and any matting or other decorative elements that will be used. The goal is a balanced design that enhances and provides a good presentation for the art, without overwhelming it.

Whether seeking period authenticity or eclectic flair, or anything in between, there is a line of frame mouldings to suit every style. Some people use narrow, contemporary frames on all of their art, while others enjoy the elegance and drama of wide, ornate mouldings, even on small artwork. The best framing for each piece of art evolves from a combination of personal preference, current fashion, and cultural traditions.

Framewoods has special software that can help you visualize the finished frame design. A corner sample just isn’t enough to give you the complete picture when you are framing art. Visit us today and let the Framewoods professionals show you how our technology will give you a virtual picture of your frame design—before you purchase it!

Visit Framewoods and try several different mouldings on a picture you want to have framed. Notice how different mouldings affect the appearance of the art: some look important, some look formal, others playful. There are many possibilities and looking is fun!
Or how about being one of the lucky few to get KU Jayhawk team player to autograph a program right after their Orange Bowl win?

With sports season upon us, show your team pride with professional custom framing. Frame a favorite player's jersey, tickets to the big game, treasured news stories or photos from the moment you will never forget. Bring in your sports memorabilia today and ask for the new IMPACT colors collection, which offers conservation matboard in the exact colors of every major professional and college sports team.

Perhaps you’re a collector and have acquired a prized assortment of sports memorabilia complete with programs, tickets, baseball cards and pictures?

Whatever the case may be, storing these treasures in the attic, under the bed or on a shelf collecting dust is a lot less than they deserve. Why not frame them for all to see and enjoy?

The design possibilities are endless and can be as elaborate or as simple as you’d like. If you’re not sure what type of display would best suit your mementos, don’t fret, we’re virtually bursting at the seams with creative framing ideas that probably never crossed your mind.

Simply drop off your keepsakes, answer a few questions and pick up a one-of-a-kind treasure created especially for you. And on the practical side, framing your favorite sports souvenirs doesn’t just look good, the framing package can be designed to preserve them as well. And if you’re not a sports buff or athlete, what about your dad, son, daughter, husband, wife or sister? Think about it. There always seems to be one gift-giving holiday or another right around the corner.

Framed sports memorabilia makes a perfect birthday, Christmas, Graduation or Hanukkah gift. And who says you need a holiday, anyway? Why not treat yourself or a loved one to a personal gift that they’ll not only treasure for years to come, but pass from one generation to the next?

Don’t just think in terms of professional sports either. How about framing the jersey your brother wore during his glory days as a college running back? Or maybe you simply have a passion for fly fishing, skeet shooting, archery, sculling or running marathons. And thanks to shadow boxes, you don’t have to limit yourself to the traditional framed jersey—balls, bats, shoes, flies, helmets, rifles and other three-dimensional objects can be framed as well. So let us at Framewoods of Topeka show you what he/she can do. The end result is sure to be delightful.

With your new IMPACT mat you will want to insure the colors stay true for years and so do we!
Here at Framewoods of Topeka we have a deeply held belief, "If it's worth framing, it's worth preserving." We offer only the highest quality products we can find to our customers. These options include 99% UV protection glass to insure the lasting beauty of your framed piece.

Because the damage caused by UV light is both cumulative and irreversible, we use UV Filtering glass on every one of our custom framing jobs. Damage from UV light rays come from both indoor and outdoor light sources and contribute to severe color loss, paper embrittlement and deterioration of artwork. Photos may appear yellow or stained with ghostly silver deposits rising to the surface. Conservation framing materials and techniques are always used on sentimental, valuable, limited edition and one-of-a-kind artwork. We use UV Filtering glass on all works of art, especially posters and open edition prints. These items are candidates for UV Filtering glass because the inks, papers and other materials used to create them are more likely to deteriorate than those used in higher end reproductions.

Once damage from light has occurred, it can never be reversed. That’s why it is important that we offer all of our customers a way to minimize this type of damage before it happens.
