We have been fortunate to have great FCEF ambassadors with our most recent being Eva Fabian. We are thrilled to be able to pay it forward another year through the continued support and donations to the FCEF. This year, the application is open to National Team members, those who competed in World Championships, World University Games and the Short Course Worlds this past year.

This is a $12,000 grant that is given to an athlete that embodies all Fran stood for and worked towards. We are looking for dedicated individuals who are team players and understand the importance of the role they have within their communities.

As we strive to help athletes work the dream in a sport that is not incredibly lucrative, your support is always needed. Thank you to all those who continue to support the FCEF and allow athletes to work their dream.

With the help of La Salle University and head swimming coach, Jamie Platt, we were able to pay it forward in a way that directly gives back to the young swimmers in the area.

Olympians Maddy Crippen and Alex Meyer, as well as current and former National Team Member Eva Fabian and Teresa Crippen, put on a 3 hour clinic and share some techniques, drills and tips for the young age group swimmers.

While Maddy, Alex, Eva and Teresa were helping the swimmers in the water, Richard Shoulberg and Lori Andress were helping teach the parents about water safety. As part of the clinic, the parents were offered the opportunity to talk with Lori and Shoulberg about different topics to help their kids have the most fun and success in the sport. They also were given the chance to review CPR by getting a training overview by Lori. Passing on these life-saving techniques and water safety tips is crucial to the mission of the foundation and we are so thankful to Shoulberg, Lori and all the parents who participated. We sincerely hope the safety portion left people walking away feeling more confident about water safety.

We had a blast with all those who came out to support the first Crippen Clinic! We are looking forward to doing another in the fall, so stay tuned!

Philadelphia’s Broad Street


Some call Philadelphia a gritty city. Some say it’s a tough town. We call it the greatest place on earth, home. That’s why we are back for the 2015 Broad Street Run. We will be cruising down 10 miles of Phantastic Philly streets to raise money for FCEF and WorkTheDream! This year our goal is $1,000 per mile, for a total of 10K.

Our kick-off campaign for this scholarship- $20K in 20 Days – is now 10 days in.

We are 1/4th the way there!  That’s right 5K down, 15K to go!!

Our ultimate goal will be to raise $100,000 before the Opening Ceremonies of the 2016 Olympic Games. For those of you who were fortunate enough to experience a great high school swim program while at the same time receiving an excellent education, you understand the value of the GA experience. We are asking friends of Fran and FCEF to help us achieve this lofty goal.    As always, all donations are 100% tax deductible.

These grant awardees have turned out to be amazing people as well as outstanding swimmers, and we are proud to see Fran’s legacy live through these ambassadors. From September – November, we engage in the process of picking the recipient of the Work the Dream Grant. This was established in 2011 with the goal of offering financial support to one athlete per year (two in an Olympic year). Over the last four years, we have had the honor of working with Matt McLean, Ashley Twichell, Bobby Bollier, Michael Klueh, and Emily Brunemann. Each one of these athletes have proven to be great people and amazing ambassadors. We are grateful for their continued support and are excited to welcome a new member to the crew in November!

On Thursday, October 23rd, we will remember the fourth anniversary of the death of Fran Crippen during an elite 10-kilometer open water race in the same country that wants it back – the UAE. We are grateful for the constant commitment to this story and the focus on athlete safety.  It is our withat this article and the anniversary of Fran’s death reminds people of the avoidable tragedy and  the life lost. We hope leaders of swimming’s governing bodies, coaches, and volunteers are reminded of the commitment we have to our athletes to protect them in and out of the water.
