Brittany Ferries launches new route to Le Havre

FERRY firm, Brittany Ferries, has started a new new cross-Channel route from the south coast port of Portsmouth to Le Havre in Normandy.

The new service will run four days a week, from Thursday to Sunday, and because it is operated by the company’s fastcraft, Normandie Express, the crossing time will be 3 hours 45 minutes.

Le Havre is an intriguing destination in its own right, attractions include a two kilometre beach right in the town centre, a host of museums (including the biggest collection of impressionist art outside Paris), as well as several shopping centres and a wide range of good restaurants.

France is keen to tackle the amount of rubbish people throw out each year, as well as look to recycle as much as possible.

For example, in 2005 each French person, on average, threw out 360kg of rubbish and in total France produced rubbish equal to 2,500 times the weight of the Eiffel Tower.

But UK visitors to France are not helping the situation as a survey by Pierre & Vacances found that during the last 12 months British people were among the worst culprits for not recycling or recycling incorrectly while on holiday.

The survey completed by more than 100 resort and residence managers in locations throughout France, found that packaging in English and from British brands was more commonly disposed of incorrectly than waste from any other nation.

The recycling system in France uses coloured bins to help people decide where their rubbish should go, and so Pierre & Vacances has put together a graphic offering tips on what goes in the yellow, blue and green bins you will see across France.
