Everyone is afraid right now of where this economy is headed. Going into Thanksgiving, many folks in the franchise industry are experiencing their own type of 'gut check' - (and its not because they know they will soon be indulging on turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes).

Franchise use of Promotional Products

REACTIVATE DORMANT ACCOUNTS: Revisit those firms who were once
customers, find out what went wrong, ask for their business again and put a promotional product in from of them to keep the message alive. Their new source may not be performing to expectations.

These same concepts would work for franchisors to attract or retain new franchisees. With budgets being tweaked for the marketing dollars, any way to leverage those dollars to be more effective is a plus!

Rogue and Ugly Duckling Franchisees

Sometimes its difficult for the entrepreneur type to adhere to someone else's business "structure."

However, so many franchisors simply suggest "just sticking to the plan."

On more than one occasion I have had a franchisor tell me a story about a "rogue" or "ugly duckling" in their system - a franchisee who comes in talking more than listening. What makes the difference between the two (rogue or ugly duckling) is that the rogue franchisee never comes around to accepting the rules or sticking to the franchise plan into which they have invested. The ugly duckling on the other hand, although having some trouble sticking to the franchise system at first, learns to adapt eventually, and interestingly enough, often becomes one of the best franchisees in the sytem . . .

Doom and gloom in the financial world . . . but how is franchising hurt?

Naturally, most businesses are being hurt in some way by the recent economic trends. But if you understand just what a franchise business represents, its hard to conceive of the idea that franchising a business will no longer be the popular thing to do. . .

A franchise concept simply represents a "perfected" business plan. If the particular plan is executed correctly (under any economic conditions), it is more likely to succeed than a business just trying to get off the ground. Of course, that is not to say that in adverse economies even franchised businesses can't fail - as a franchisee owner, you just have a much better shot at succeeding with a tested franchise system.

'Breakfast' expansion in the Fast Food Industry

Early in the 1990's someone in the franchise industry thought that the Egg McMuffin seemed a little lonely during breakfast. Ever since then, the breakfast crowd has been one which franchisors look to potentially profit (additionally) from.

Little brother Burger King has definitely put up the biggest direct competition to the McMuffin, but a number of other franchises have expanded successfully (and many unsuccessfully) into the morning meal madness.

While the popularity of Bagel franchises seemed to explode into this decade, many large franchise brands have tried and failed (sometimes miserably, and dis"taste"fully).

Subway and Wendy's (two of the other top franchises in terms of units out there) are the latest to add or try a breakfast menu in limited markets. Hardee's, and even Taco Bell have experimented with breakfast menus as well.

We'll just have to wait and see who is still eating the Egg McMuffin?

Business Consulting Franchises Experiencing Upturn

Here is one that might leave you scratching your head . . . or then again, maybe not. Several Business Consulting Franchisors have reported a slight improvement in the number of people interested in their respective franchise concepts over the last several (dismal economic) weeks. While many franchisors (across all industries) are clammoring for new franchisee recruits, some are even presenting offers to entrepreneurs that are almost uncomprehensible (2 for 1 deals, no franchise fee at all, lower royalties, etc.).

Really, this just leads back to the old argument, does franchising experience an upturn or downturn when the economy heads south?

Without question, the downturn over the last year or so has effected pretty much everyone in the franchise industry. If we are slowly turning the economic corner (for the sunnier side again) then maybe there exist those investors that think it might be a good idea to be in the business consulting side of things. While its hard to say if this will be the case, its easy enough to find investors scratching their heads right now . . . stay tuned.

Advertising Businesses should pick up some franchisees.

As the economy recovers from the recent downfall, one industry that should experience a bit of an upward swing is advertising.

Businesses and Franchises in the advertising realm will serve to cater to all businesses needing to advertise and build up a customer base once again. With the volatile movement of the stock market of late, some investors are turning to business opportunities right now. Business Opportunities (as opposed to franchises) usually have lower barriers of entry in terms of initial start-up capital. Although less total money invested might seem less of a risk right now, business opportunities do not come with the on-going support that a franchise system provides.

Generally, if your background is in the same field you are looking to purchase a business opportunity in, you have less to worry about at this time. However, if you are considering purchasing a business opportunity that is in an industry totally new to you, you might want to consider something more along the lines of a franchise opportunity. A franchise system comes with support from the franchisor. Also, because you are more vested in the franchisors system, they simply want you to succeed (and thus are more likely to keep on the ball helping you).

There is a lot of speculation about investing in a franchise right now. This is just a brief blog on a few simple thoughts about franchising in general.

A Franchise Business (and particularly one in an established franchise system) represents a business plan that has been "perfected" to some degree. Sure, most franchise systems or concepts can be improved upon in some way, but a franchise plan (as opposed to a single operating business) has already been scrutinized by more than just its owners/creator - and existing franchises have of course already been tested by other franchisees.

Don't be afraid to contact existing franchisees in the system you are interested in investing in. Many industry professionals agree that franchisees are the single most valuable resource for gathering information regarding a respective franchise system.

There exist many resources for franchise guidance and consulting. Most of these resources are also free to the interested entrepreneur seeking a franchise investment. Some simple advice: seek a franchise consultant who specializes in the system you are interested in investing in. Most franchise consultants are commissioned by franchisors seeking qualified investors. Be wary of any franchise consultant "pushing" any one franchise on you. If the consultant really has your best interests in mind, they will take their time and strategize a course of action unique to you.

Some Franchisors Have Amazing Offers During the Slowdown

These are tough times for business investors, indeed.
But there do exist opportunities out there for those entrepreneurs with the captial to spend on franchise opportunities (with more "deals" appearing everyday).

A number of franchisors are beginning to offer "2 for 1" deals for their newly recruited franchisees. Other franchisors are waiving initial franchise fees altogether. And others still, are offering additional "carrots" in the form of paying new franchisee leases for the first one or two years, and sometimes even waiving marketing startup costs, etc.

If you have the required captial in hand, this just might be a great time to look into buying that franchise of you dreams. Here are a few notions to keep in mind:

If your investment requires additional credit of any kind, you might have trouble getting a loan during this slowdown (especially for food and restaurant credit loans). However, if you do have the capital in place to move forward on a "smaller dollar" establishment, fast-food chains offering more affordable "meal deals" are a good place to look first.

Real estate can be negotiated. Remember that the slowdown is greatly affecting the real estate industry. If you are ready to make an investment, make sure to work with the franchisor when locating a respective retail/box location. Even more important, negotiate or press the franchisor to really negotiate the lease firmly. Commercial real estate is more available in many parts of the country than it has ever been before. To free up more capital, remember to also request the lease be back-loaded, freeing up some capital upfront.
