It’s a terrible feeling, because all you were trying to do was be kind. Yet some people see it as chauvinistic, condescending, or self-righteous — when all you tried to show was respect.

That reaction doesn’t just sting in the moment — it sends a much larger message.

We can’t condemn rudeness, selfishness, or condescension — and then mock those who show courtesy and respect. Doing so not only discourages polite behavior; it slowly changes social norms. When people get mocked for being polite, rudeness starts to feel normal — and eventually becomes acceptable. Once that happens, we lose the right to complain about the uncivilized world around us. Is that what you want?

Good manners are like traffic lights — ignore them, and things get messy fast.

Good Manners Never Go Out of Style

To understand how we got here, it helps to look at the history of manners and social etiquette — and why some behaviors came to be frowned upon. Manners are basic social behaviors: how you treat others in everyday interactions. They’re universal and expected of everyone: saying “please” and “thank you,” not interrupting, and holding the door for others. Etiquette, by contrast, refers to the formal rules that govern behavior in specific situations — like table manners, workplace protocols, or polite ways of addressing someone.

Chivalry grew out of these same ideas of respect and consideration but took them a step further. It began as a knight’s code of honor and gradually evolved into a broader idea of courtesy and respect, historically often directed toward women. Examples included pulling out a chair, offering your coat, or paying for a date.

Over time, some behaviors became frowned upon because they reinforced inequality, singled out certain groups, or imposed expectations that no longer fit modern society. Acts once considered polite could feel patronizing when applied unevenly. Today, manners and courtesy are valued not for ritual or tradition, but for promoting respect, equality, and thoughtful interaction among everyone. Simply put, in today’s world, manners and etiquette are measured by intent, not by tradition.

In general, actions are considered appropriate when they show respect, equality, and consideration — not when they reinforce old hierarchies, stereotypes, or unequal expectations. For example, paying for a date without discussion can imply assumptions about finances or gender roles. Offering unsolicited help in a way that assumes the other person is incapable can feel patronizing. Similarly, giving compliments that focus on appearance, gender, or other traits rather than skill or character can come across as condescending.

But that doesn’t excuse the many simple acts of respect that are rarely seen today. Small gestures like dressing appropriately, holding doors open for people, showing up on time, and making eye contact when speaking are basic signs of consideration. Everyday courtesy includes listening without interrupting, respecting others’ opinions and beliefs, and watching your language. It also means addressing people respectfully, avoiding phone use in public settings, and responding promptly to calls or messages. Respect continues to be expressed in smaller but meaningful ways as well, such as giving others time to speak and letting others merge in traffic. These moments may seem minor, but together they shape how we treat one another in everyday life. Sending a brief note or message to show appreciation or offering a genuine compliment for effort rather than appearance are other simple but meaningful expressions of thoughtfulness. Yet these acts are often overlooked in modern life.

Manners: The Software Update Your Personality Needs

When you think about it, good manners aren’t difficult to practice. In fact, being respectful takes no more effort than being disrespectful. It ultimately comes down to choice and how you want to live your life. Good manners are the keys that open doors — but poor behaviors can just as easily close them. Bad manners don’t only affect those around you — they also reflect on you. Good manners show you were raised to respect others — and that you don’t just value dignity, you live it. Manners say a lot about people. What do they say about you?

They say they want to read more, tackle their bucket list, and become a force for good in the world. But does it happen? Not really. They make promises to themselves they never truly intend to keep. And there lies the rub. Saying something feels good but doing it is another matter entirely.

And that’s the point. Success requires hard work, sacrifice, and dedication. Saying something may feel rewarding at first, but without follow-through, it’s meaningless.

So, what does that empty promise leave them with? Nothing. If it doesn’t trouble them — and no one calls them out — they’ll likely do it again…and again. Over time, they end up living a fantasy.

Talking Creates Noise; Doing Creates Results

Some people believe that once they make a commitment, their obligation ends. But that raises a deeper question: What drives people to make hollow claims in the first place?

Do they:

Value the outcome, but resist the effort?

Feel momentary relief just from saying it, as if that alone were enough?

Truly care about the outcome, or are they mainly trying to impress others?

Follow through on small commitments, while only talking about larger ones?

Accept ownership of the outcome, or expect others to handle it for them?

Speak Less…Do More

We have terms for people who say they’ll do something but fail to deliver. Some call them delusional, others use a harsher label like hypocrite, and some even call them liars — making promises they have no intention of keeping. Those who make such commitments often see their behavior as harmless, and in many cases, they don’t even realize they’re making a promise.

While it may not directly harm anyone, it does erode trust over time. How can you trust people who don’t follow through on their commitments? What may feel harmless to them isn’t always perceived that way by others.

And it raises a simple question of character: If a promise is important enough to make, it should be important enough to keep.

Keep the promises you make to others — and yourself.

There’s a simple way to do this: discipline. When you promise to do something, only make commitments you plan to keep. Talk is cheap — it takes no effort to say something. What matters is follow-through. So be disciplined with the promises you make because your credibility is on the line. Better yet, don’t tell me what you’re going to do, tell me what you’ve done. Saying something isn’t the same as doing it.

Some people believe they can’t positively impact others’ lives because they aren’t rich, successful, or powerful. They tell themselves, “I’m just one person. What difference can I make?” or “The world is so vast, what effect can one person have?” Yet, as the Dalai Lama wisely said, “If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.”

While it’s tough to change the world, you can change the world around you.

Here are 15 ways to leave your mark:

Become a mentor. A small investment of your time can be life-changing for someone. Take a mentee under your wing, provide guidance, serve as a sounding board, and help them achieve their true potential.

Entrust someone with responsibility. Display your confidence and trust by giving someone more responsibility.

Be a kind neighbor. Add a personal touch to the impersonal nature of the world. Welcome a new resident to the neighborhood. Offer to cook dinner if they fall ill, lend a tool when needed, recommend a reliable contractor, or simply drop by to say hello.

Volunteer within your community. Don’t wait for someone else to raise their hand — take the initiative and raise yours first. That’s how you make an impact.

Comfort someone in need. Be their rock when the ground feels shaky. Offer companionship, listen with empathy, provide a comforting embrace, or lend practical help. A heartful note can also express your care and concern.

Find someone who could use a smile. You don’t have to be rich to give; your gift can be as simple as a smile.

Spend quality time with someone. Make a meaningful connection. As Jim Rohn, entrepreneur and author, said, “Time is more valuable than money. You can get more money, but you cannot get more time.”

Make someone feel special. See the goodness in others, help them feel good about themselves, and bring out the best in them.

Help someone deal with disappointment. Provide encouragement, inspire them to learn from their mistakes, and help them move forward.

Teach someone the ropes. Remember how daunting it was when you first started a new activity or job? Share your passion, knowledge, and experience to jump-start their journey.

Be available for someone who’s lonely. Open your heart when theirs feels heavy. Make it clear they’re not alone.

Be a catalyst for action. A good intention is like an idea that you keep to yourself. If you don’t act on it, it’s as if it never existed.

Organize a fundraiser. Give to those less fortunate than yourself. It only takes one person to change a life — and that person may as well be you.

Share your values. Demonstrate that the world is driven by heart and integrity, not just algorithms. Underscore the message that moral character matters.

Create a legacy. Make a meaningful impact on the world; it is our duty to enrich the future for generations to come.

Like a stone dropped into a stream, even small actions create ripples that travel far beyond where we can see. The words we speak, the habits we keep, the way we handle everyday moments — all of it quietly shapes the world around us. Often, we have no idea who notices, who learns, or who follows the currents we’ve set in motion. Yet the truth is clear: Influence doesn’t ask for permission, it just happens. And this is especially true with our children, who are watching, learning, and quietly following the example we set, whether we realize it or not.

When was the last time you thought about how your behavior shapes your children’s lives? Are you taking that responsibility seriously — or leaving it to chance?

Watch your children grow, and they will teach you what you’ve taught them.

Peekaboo, They See You

Think about the ways you influence your children every day. It shows up in the choices you make, the routines you follow, and the outlook you bring to life. Your values, work ethic, and even the relationships you build leave a mark. Influence isn’t always intentional, but it is constant, and the habits, behaviors, and attitude you model today quietly guide the adults they will become tomorrow.

Which brings us to the hard truth.

How can you teach your children to be kind when you treat people like dirt? How can you teach them to be tolerant when you ridicule those who think differently? How can you teach a strong work ethic when you won’t lift a finger — and expect others to shoulder the burden?

You can lecture your kids until you’re blue in the face, but if your actions don’t match your words, they will ring hollow.

It’s time to walk the talk.

When you set expectations, do you challenge yourself to achieve your best, or settle for the bare minimum? Do you reach for the stars, or retreat to what’s comfortable? Do you run toward challenges or away from them?

Desire alone isn’t enough.

Character is what lasts long after your ambition fades. Do you keep your promises, honor your word, and treat others with dignity and respect? Do you do what’s right or what’s convenient? Do you complain about the way things are, or work to make them better? Do you welcome constructive feedback, or get defensive and shun it like the plague? Do you take responsibility for your actions, or make excuses and play the blame game? In the end, your children are watching — and taking their cues by how you live.

People who look up to you watch every move you make — so don’t let them down.

Quietly Watching, Always Learning

Live a life that makes you proud. It’s a life where you hope for the best, give your best, and bring out the best in others. A life where you reach for the stars while staying grounded, one where you pursue your dreams with vigor and still make time to help those in need. A life where you set high standards for yourself, not those imposed by others…where you give more than you take… and you care not only where life is taking you but how you’re getting there. Always remember — your children are watching and learning from every move you make. Ripples travel farther than the stone that makes them. That’s how a life becomes a legacy.

Are You a Good Role Model?

They arrive early, bring positive energy, and are often the last to leave at night. They follow instructions, volunteer for work no one else wants, and always go the extra mile. They’re model employees. They support and uplift others, do what’s right rather than what’s politically expedient, and always lead by example. They’re a cut above the rest.

Every leader dreams of having someone like this on their team — trustworthy, committed, and positive to the core. You’d think they’d be celebrated as heroes.

But that doesn’t always happen.

When Someone Shines, Do You Squint?

By doing their best, they inadvertently make others look bad — and that often breeds resentment. Rather than raise their bar, the crowd pressures high performers to lower theirs. Over time, many lose their passion, grow disillusioned, and leave.

You’ll find examples of this everywhere: teachers, factory workers, hospitality staff. They’re the teacher who changes lives, the waiter who lifts everyone’s mood, or the single mother on the factory floor striving to be the best possible role model for her kids.

They were taught to work hard, care deeply, and take pride in doing things right. It was never about money (though that helps); it was about honor, dignity, and self-respect. They’re not chasing accolades or promotions, and they’re not trying to cut others down or make anyone look bad — it’s simply who they are. And in the process, they should win hearts, earn trust, and help organizations thrive.

Do You Reward Effort — or Resent It?

Some people slap them down. Some ridicule them as overachievers or goody two-shoes. And instead of placing them on a pedestal, some quietly send a message: This kind of effort and commitment isn’t welcome here.

At first glance, it may seem the high achiever is the only one affected. But unfortunately, that’s not the case.

Most of their colleagues are thinking, I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes. Why give your best if you’re penalized for it?

Instead of accolades, high achievers get ostracized and dragged through the mud. Suddenly they’re no longer seen as team players — they’re the ones who make everyone look bad. And if they assume that makes them a shoo-in for promotion, they should think again. They’re left out of conversations, their motives are questioned, and the invites come to a screeching halt.

At first, it affects only those closest to them. Then it spreads throughout the organization. Soon people question whether high achievement is worth the cost. Lowering standards feels safe — do just enough to stay under the radar and avoid conflict.

And all the while, senior management preaches excellence. But instead of recognizing and rewarding it, they treat everyone equally — regardless of effort or results.

What?

You can talk about excellence all you want, but people stop trying when there’s no benefit for being exceptional and no consequence for being mediocre.

Excellence doesn’t come to those who settle. If you want the best, hold yourself and those around you to that standard — and accept nothing less. When someone goes above and beyond, they should never be belittled or vilified; they should be celebrated as heroes. True greatness thrives in an environment that honors bold effort, relentless standards, and unwavering courage — because those who push past limits deserve recognition, not resentment. Do you cut people down for standing tall?

Ask someone who escaped oppression what it’s like to live in the USA and they’ll tell you how grateful they are to be free. Ask someone who survived a serious illness what it’s like to be alive and they’ll tell you to cherish every moment. And yet, so many of us ignore these blessings.

But what if everything you take for granted — your security, a safe place to sleep, the freedom to speak your mind, and the ability to choose for yourself — suddenly vanished?

The common thread isn’t the circumstance — it’s perspective. When something essential has been out of reach, its return carries weight. Security, freedom, and health stop being background conditions and become daily reminders of what truly matters.

Are You Jeopardizing What Matters Most?

When your lens changes, so does what you see — inviting three questions:

When life comes easily, do we overlook the treasures we have? We get so used to comfort and convenience that everyday blessings fade from view. Noticing them simply requires slowing down and paying attention.

Do we appreciate things more after we’ve earned them through effort and sacrifice? When something is handed to us, or we’re born into privilege, we’re less invested because we never paid a price for it.

Do we value things more after experiencing life without them? It’s easier to go without something than to lose it after having it. Experiencing loss — or even the fear of it — forces us to pause and recognize what we once took for granted.

Adversity doesn’t create value; it reveals it.

Are You Too Comfortable to Notice?

Take a moment to count your blessings.

Do you live in a free country, with a roof over your head, good healthcare, and aren’t afraid for your safety? Do you live in peace, have freedom of expression, and practice the religion of your choice? Do you live in a home with working lights, clean, running water, and heat to keep you warm? Do you have a job that pays enough to support you and your family? Do you have access to fresh, healthy food for your family? Do you have enough money to cover necessities — and occasionally enjoy something extra? Do you have good friends, a loving family, and countless memories? Do you have free time to take a stroll in the park, read a good book, or tend your garden?

Chances are, you never give these blessings a second thought.

That’s because you’ve had them for ages, never had to sacrifice for them, or your mind is on other matters. Plus, most people are too busy chasing more. But as American writer Frank A. Clark once said, “If a fellow isn’t thankful for what he’s got, he isn’t likely to be thankful for what he’s going to get.”

The truth is, like anything else, when you become complacent or take things for granted, cracks begin to appear, like weeds sprouting through a perfect lawn. There’s a saying: “You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.” But the truth is, you knew exactly what you had, you just didn’t think you’d lose it.

Are You Endangering the Best Parts of Your Life?

This isn’t a gentle reminder — it’s a wake-up call. If you take what matters most for granted — like time with your children or aging parents — you may wake up one day and realize how much you’ve lost. Now is the moment to pay attention, cherish what you have, and live with intention before that wake-up call becomes irreversible. As the saying goes, “The happiest people don’t necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything they have.”

Do You Count Your Blessings?

Please leave a comment and tell us what you think or share it with someone who can benefit from the information.

10 Ways to Strengthen Your Self-Confidence

Confidence is the gift that turns ordinary into extraordinary and potential into reality. It stems from self-awareness, meticulous preparation, continuous improvement, positive reinforcement, and a supportive environment. Here are 10 ways to strengthen your self-confidence:

Successful track record. Every win boosts your belief that you can do it again.

Courageous action. Venturing beyond your comfort zone and confronting new challenges fosters both resilience and self-assurance.

Preparation and practice. The more you prepare and practice, the more confident you become in your abilities.

Self-improvement efforts. Committing to personal growth and continuous improvement boosts both competence and self-esteem.

Mindset and attitude. Developing a resilient mindset, where failures are learning opportunities and challenges are opportunities for growth, builds self-assurance.

Supportive environment. Surrounding yourself with supportive people creates an environment conducive to confidence-building.

Encouraging comments. Positive feedback serves as a potent form of validation, boosting your self-assurance as others acknowledge your strengths.

Self-reflection. Recognizing your strengths, skills, and accomplishments through introspection not only enhances self-esteem but also nurtures moral character.

Goal setting and achievement. Setting and achieving ambitious goals reaffirms faith in your abilities.

Personal values and beliefs. Living authentically in alignment with your values instills faith in your decisions and actions.

Confidence is a gift that breathes life into dreams, rendering the tallest mountains conquerable and the greatest challenges surmountable. It’s the master key that unlocks the door to your full potential, turning “can’t” into “can” with a simple twist. It fills you with a deep sense of empowerment, propelling you to seize the world with unwavering effort and determination. Contrary to popular belief, self-confidence isn’t inherited; rather, it’s cultivated, nurtured, and honed over time. Once attained, it becomes an unwavering ally that will benefit you throughout your life journey. As President Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today.”

Claiming this quality makes them feel good, and small acts of generosity may make them look good too. But some only see themselves this way because they’ve set the bar low — either convincing themselves they’ve cleared it or simply fooling themselves. One act of goodwill doesn’t make you kind, just like one win doesn’t make you a winner. You say you’re kind, but are you?

Some people view themselves as thoughtful because they are friendly, helped someone once, or sent a Christmas card or two. But a passing smile or a single good deed doesn’t make you compassionate. Doing something once in a while doesn’t make it a habit — it just shows you remembered to think of it.

Being kind occasionally is a gesture, not a habit.

Think You’re Kind? Think Again

We all like to think of ourselves as kind — but how often do our actions match that belief? These 15 actions reveal what kind of person you really are.

Do you:

Give willingly, or out of obligation?

Offer kindness every day, or only on special occasions?

Treat strangers with kindness, or only friends?

Take initiative, or wait to be asked?

Listen to understand, or just to respond?

Practice tolerance, or impose your will on others?

Give generously, or always expect something in return?

Support without overstepping, or force yourself on others?

Act discreetly, or boast to win accolades?

Show kindness because you care, or because you have an ulterior motive?

Acknowledge others’ efforts, or keep it to yourself?

Act, or just think about it?

Do your fair share, or leave the burden to others?

Compromise, or insist on having your way?

Focus so much on your own needs that you overlook the needs of others?

Being Kind: Easier Said Than Done

I’m sure you want to think of yourself as kind. After all, it’s painful to see yourself as callous, selfish, or unkind. Yet it’s easy to fall into the trap of putting your own needs first, insisting on having your way, being unwilling to sacrifice, or getting so caught up in your own struggles that you forget others exist. But is that the person you want to be? What impact does that have on your relationships, your reputation, and your sense of self-worth? Imagine a world where everyone acted that way.

At the end of the day, you can make all the excuses you want for not being kind, considerate, and compassionate — but you know the truth. And I hope you can live with it.

Being considerate is like wearing deodorant: It doesn’t cost much,
but it makes life a lot more pleasant for everyone.

Kindness isn’t something you’re born with, nor is it a skill you simply acquire. It’s a choice. You decide who you want to be and how you treat others. At the end of the day, you’ll know whether you brightened someone’s day or only thought of yourself. Being compassionate doesn’t mean ignoring yourself…it means your life isn’t the only one that matters. You say you’re kind, but are you?

Are You Considerate?

He’s the author of 13 books — endorsed by Stephen R. Covey (famous author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People), presidential candidate Ross Perot, and NFL Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells. He’s appeared on the cover of a national magazine, and his blog has captivated millions worldwide.

Meet Frank Sonnenberg — famous to millions, unknown to most.

Frank spent most of his career as a consultant — first as head of marketing for Ernst & Young’s (EY) Management Consulting Group in the U.S. for over a decade, and later as the founder of Sonnenberg & Partners, a strategy and marketing firm advising some of the largest and most respected organizations in the world.

When he “retired,” Frank planned to teach at the university level but instead turned to writing, believing he could reach a broader audience through the written word. Today, he spends nearly 50 hours a week writing about moral character, values, and personal responsibility — timeless topics that are more relevant than ever.

His blog, FrankSonnenbergOnline, offers insights on everything from the power of a positive attitude and building trust to spotting rude behavior and finding purpose in life. It has been named among the best leadership, personal development, and inspirational blogs in the world.

Among his 13 book titles, works like Values to Live By, The Path to a Meaningful Life, and Managing with a Conscience reveal his focus on living an honorable life, doing what’s right, and finding true purpose in life — with Managing with a Conscience named one of the “Top 10 Business Books of the Year.”

Frank’s new book, If This Won’t Get You Thinking, Nothing Will, was released on May 12, 2026. It offers 365 passages to help you live a life of integrity, purpose, and happiness — one day at a time.

So, with all these accolades, why isn’t Frank a household name? The answer is simple: He shuns the public spotlight.

Frank’s mission is to make a difference through his writing and by donating all book proceeds to charity — including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Tunnel to Towers Foundation, and Samaritan’s Purse. He also refuses advertising or sponsorships for his blog, avoiding the slightest appearance that he’s doing it for anything other than the public good.

While most authors promote their books through speaking tours, media interviews, and podcasts, Frank quietly moves on to the next project. For him, it’s not about publicity — it’s about purpose.

Frank is changing lives — one reader at a time — but he knows he can’t fulfill that mission alone. He encourages readers to share his message with anyone who might benefit. What excites him most is hearing from parents who gift his books to their children, hoping to pass on important life lessons. As Frank puts it, “If you don’t pass your values on to your kids, someone else will.”

At the end of each book, he expresses heartfelt thanks to those who read, comment on, and share his work: “Together, we’re making a difference. Thank YOU for helping me spread the word that moral character matters!”

In a world that often rewards noise over substance, Frank Sonnenberg stands as a quiet force for good — a reminder that values still matter.

It’s unnerving. That’s exactly what it feels like to get through the day bombarded by clickbait, nonstop solicitations, and social media rants. Is the noise getting to you?

And that’s only half the problem. The sheer volume of information in the world is staggering. As you sift through it, you run headfirst into deliberate distortion and dishonesty — much of it designed to mislead rather than inform. No wonder we feel confused, distrustful, and exhausted.

Distractions like these consume time, elevate stress, and warp judgment. The challenge isn’t just staying informed and making good choices — it’s doing it without losing your sanity.

Noise: Where Everyone Talks and Nobody Thinks

What do constant noise, misinformation, and conflicting news do to you?

Information overload can make the world seem far more complicated than it is.

Constant exposure to negativity can increase anxiety, frustration, and irritability.

Avid readers can feel out of the loop due to the sheer volume of information.

Contradictory coverage of the same news can pit people against each another.

Noise and misinformation can distort beliefs and values.

Exposure to misleading information can make you distrustful of everything — and everyone.

Sifting through endless noise leaves little time to focus on what truly matters.

The more you consume without filtering, the easier it is to lose focus on your values, your priorities, and ultimately, your peace of mind. Master three pillars to control the information you encounter daily:

Get organized. Identify what matters most to you, so you can filter out the noise. This means limiting notifications, unsubscribing from unwanted publications, muting or unfollowing toxic social media accounts, deleting outdated or irrelevant information, and marking unsolicited emails as junk.

Stay focused. Don’t lose sight of your most important goals. Practice single tasking instead of multitasking and basing success on how busy you are. Minimize distractions — even the ones you create yourself. Don’t feel compelled to read or respond to every email right away, scroll through social media, or engage in irrelevant tasks. Develop a habit of handling correspondence in a timely manner: Respond, file, or delete, so it doesn’t pile up. For items unrelated to your goals, create a “later” folder so they don’t derail your focus.

Scrutinize sources. Although information is plentiful and easily accessible, it’s worthless if you don’t harness it to your advantage. The key is scrutinizing it for accuracy, honesty, and objectivity. Consider whether the person delivering the message is in the know — a credible source. Is the information coming from the original source or secondhand? Does the messenger have a personal bias or a vested interest in the outcome? Is the information presented as opinion or fact? Are all sides of the issue objectively covered?

Be a little skeptical. Do your homework. Question sensational headlines. Cross-verify information. At the same time, invite feedback, encourage others to challenge your thinking, and remain open to opposing viewpoints.

How to Stay Sane in a World Full of Noise

Noise is everywhere. Judgment isn’t.

We live in an age of abundant information. Without focus, it distracts. Without discipline, it overwhelms. Without skepticism, it misleads.

The challenge isn’t access to information — it’s judgment. What you consume, what you ignore, and what you question shapes what you believe, how you act, and the choices you make every day. Judgment turns information into insight; without it, it’s just noise.

So, the next time you believe something without question, remember: It’s not ignorance that misleads us — it’s certainty.

Are You Drowning in Information?
