Co-response program making an impact for Franklin

"As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to an end the Franklin Police Department’s Co-Response Program continues to make a meaningful impact in our community by connecting individuals with the help and support they need during difficult times.

Through the partnership between our officers and co-response clinicians, we are able to respond to mental health, substance use, and crisis-related calls with a focus on care, de-escalation, and access to services.

In the past year:
• 881 cases were referred to the Co-Response Program
• 44 individuals were diverted from arrest and connected to treatment
• 142 individuals were diverted from unnecessary emergency department visits

Our goal remains simple: helping people get the support they need while keeping them safely connected to community resources whenever possible.

We are proud of the work being done every day through this collaborative effort to support the wellbeing of our residents."

Reminder: PMC Kids Ride scheduled for Sunday, June 7

"Join us on Sunday, June 7th for the Franklin PMC Kids Ride, a bike ride for kids ages 3-14. Kids can choose from a 3, 6, or 10-mile course.

Younger riders, not yet on two wheels, can take part in the Tikes and Trikes course in a fun, contained area. 100% of every rider-raised dollar goes directly to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund.

Kids can join a team, create their own or ride solo! All local communities are encouraged to participate. This is our 20th year so come join the Fun!

Franklin Public Schools Fifth Graders Recognized at One8 Applied Learning Hub Student Showcase

Superintendent Lucas Giguere and Director of Curriculum STEM Eric Stark are pleased to share that fifth-grade students from Lincoln Street and Washington Street Elementary Schools recently presented Applied Learning math projects to over 500 industry professionals at the One8 Applied Learning Hub Student Showcase in Boston.

Both schools received awards for their impressive group projects. Washington Street’s team won the ST Math category and Lincoln Street’s team won Project of Distinction.

Students first began working on the projects in February, when they were tasked with working in groups to create a tri-fold poster explaining an ST Math game they use in class.

ST Math is a supplemental math program that teaches mathematical concepts through visual puzzles. Through its visual depictions of math concepts, the program removes language barriers for students and utilizes interactive puzzles to explain ideas.

The project challenged students to introduce the game to someone unfamiliar with it. Students explained how the game helped them develop a mathematical skill or concept, and considered how industry professionals use math within their careers.

Students shared their projects with professionals from across the state, including individuals from organizations such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Liberty Mutual. They also presented to several local organizations, including the Town of Franklin, Franklin School Committee and Franklin Public Schools.

The professionals provided feedback and discussed the projects with students. Through the conversations, students learned about the process of applying concepts learned in the classroom to real world scenarios.

"Projects like this allow our students to understand the curriculum from a different perspective," said Washington Street Elementary School Principal Evan Chelman. "As our students collaborated to teach others a math concept, they approached the course material from a new angle. It was exciting to see them work together and incorporate the feedback community members provided."

With their revised projects, the fifth graders presented their work at Franklin High School during the Science National Honor Society’s Family Science Night on April 9.

The months of hard work paid off on May 8, when the students traveled to the TRACK at new balance and presented their projects at the One8 Applied Learning Hub Student Showcase. They received written and verbal feedback from industry professionals, whose notes praised the projects and allowed students to draw connections between their own and the professionals’ work.

“We prioritize aligning our curriculum and student experiences with current industry practices,” said Superintendent Giguere. “Through our partnerships with the One8 Applied Learning Hub and ST Math, our students can attend meaningful events such as the showcase. These opportunities allow them to see firsthand how their classroom lessons apply to the outside world."

The final product each group displayed at the showcase was a tri-fold poster with an ST Math puzzle and description, the math concept behind the game, the connection between the game and the real world and how it relates to at least one profession.

“We are very proud of the groups that presented at the One8 Student Showcase,” said Lincoln Street Elementary School Principal Brad Hendrixson. “The months of hard work paid off as our students took home multiple awards and had insightful conversations with industry professionals. These hands-on events truly make a difference in our students' learning experience, and we were happy to see them thrive during their showcase presentations."

"Revenge was not something Franklin was trying to hide from.

The Panthers knew exactly what happened last season in the state tournament against Andover, and once the Warriors showed up in the bracket again, Franklin was not interested in pretending this was just another tournament game.

One year after Andover ended Franklin’s season in an upset, the Panthers got their response Tuesday night, jumping out to a big lead and dominating after halftime to roll to a 15-5 win in the opening round of the Division 1 state tournament.

“We knew they knocked us out last year, so there was a little revenge,” Franklin coach Kristen Igoe Guarino said. “I think it’s a good mentality to have. We wanted to fight for everything — nothing’s given to us. I think that kind of happened to us a few weeks ago where we got complacent. It was important we came in with the mentality of you have to earn it, and playing a team who beat you last year is helpful.”

“Embrace Your Quilty Creativity” program Tuesday, June 9 in Franklin

Yankee Quilters, a nonprofit quilt guild, will present a program by Janet Elia on inspiring quilt projects at its meeting at 7:00 PM. Tuesday, June 9th, at Emma’s Quilt Cupboard in the Horace Mann Plaza, East Central Street in Franklin. Elia is a quilter, instructor and lecturer from Taunton. Her slide show will reveal her creative process and her sources of inspiration to develop quilting motifs and designs. To see photos of Janet’s work, visit her blog. This program is open to non-members for a one-time fee of $5.00.

The June meeting will also include the organization’s annual “Strawberry Social,” which wraps up the program year, dates for summer events, and a report on the many quilts donated for charity in the past six months.

Yankee will hold a summer “staycation” open to all quilters Friday, July 31st to Sunday, August 2nd at Christ The King Lutheran Church in Holliston. Franklin Rod And Gun Club schedules annual Fishing Derby - June 6

June 6th is our annual Fishing Derby! Just $10 for adults and $5 for kids 12 and younger on gorgeous Uncas Pond, which was recently stocked with 1,200 trout.

There will be cash prizes for adults coming in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for biggest fish but all kids 16 and younger get trophies. We'll have free use of bait, gear, boats, rods & reels while supplies last. You can bring your own (non-motorized) boat as well and launch from our beach or public access road.

We'll have an all-you-can-eat breakfast for $5 or, if you don't want that, breakfast sandwiches for sale that you can bring with you while you fish. There will also be a free pizza lunch.

Raffles will be taking place throughout the day as well. It's a time-honored Franklin tradition and we can't wait to see you out there. Tight lines!!

Veterans Service Officer Shannon Nisbett is the master of ceremonies and introduces each speaker, and walks us through the program.

The 22nd Annual Strawberry Stroll is set for Friday, June 12 from 4 to 8 pm. Rain date is Saturday June 13 from 4 to 8 pm. The event is expanded up Main Street to Dean College and Franklin Public Library.

The Strawberry Stroll has everything you want. Food, music, entertainment, 100+ vendors, community groups, activities, and strawberry shortcake. There’s something for everyone.

Cultural Hub by Franklin Library. A variety of arts-focused activities and information in Franklin all day. The Hub includes: Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy; Children's Museum of Franklin; Cultural Council; Cultural District Committee; Franklin Art Association; and Franklin Public Library.

Franklin Historical Museum will educate visitors about Franklin’s history and sell books and Franklin-oriented merchandise.

Children’s Museum of Franklin will have a pop-up space offering creative children’s activities.

The Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School (BFCCPS) is thrilled to announce middle school achievements this month in the fields of Science, Technology and Engineering. The mission of BFCCPS, includes a classical education whereby students are grounded in the fundamental subjects of literature, history, mathematics, science, language, music and the arts in order to understand culture and support active participation in it.

The One8 Applied Learning Hub and Project Lead the Way (PLTW) hosted an Applied Learning Student Showcase on May 8th at The TRACK at New Balance in Boston, MA. Three 8th grade teams were selected from BFCCPS following an in school STEAM student showcase.

The students who participated in this statewide expo created a tri-fold board presentation and produced a functioning app on MIT App Inventor. The following students participated this year; Aagam Shah and James Jaeggli with their app about medications for the elderly, Max Greene and Jacob Simmons with their app about Ninja Warrior, and Anagha Balagurumoorthy and Shreya Kirikera with their app about water safety with drinking water.

They were then introduced to many industry experts who asked questions about the creation of their apps along with suggestions for how to improve their apps in the future. It was a wonderful event and the students selected should be so proud of their hard work. Thank you to Jessica Kelleher our STEAM Teacher and Grades 6-8 Librarian, for supporting this initiative and chaperoning the trip to the TRACK at New Balance. BFCCPS has participated in this event since 2021 as part of BFCCPS’s participation in Project Lead the Way.

The next day sixteen BFCCPS students in Grades Seven and Eight participated in the Massachusetts Science & Engineering Fair (MSEF). The event was held on May 9, 2026 at Clark

University, Worcester. We are excited to recognize the following students who earned accolades:

● Cabot Grand Award: Aagam Shah and Chittesh Patel “Selective Capture of Harmful Pathogens Using a Mucin-Based Trapping Mechanism”
● Second Place Award: Dishita Noolu: “Does a natural bandage infused with healing and antibacterial ingredients promote faster skin recovery than a regular store-bought bandage”
● Third Place Award: Anagha Balagurumoorthy and Shreya Kirikera “Investigation of Pharmaceutical Waste in Public Water Systems”
● Honorable Mention: Mansha Khatri and Poorvi Rajaboyina “Freezing of Different Water Types”
● Thermo Fisher Junior Innovators Challenge Delegates: Aagam Shah and Chittesh Patel

Friday, June 5

Reading of the Wrentham/Franklin Declaration of Independence on Wrentham Common

Back in 1776, with encouragement from the provisional state government, Wrentham (which then included Franklin, Norfolk, and Plainville) joined with several other Massachusetts towns to write and issue its own Declaration of Independence from Great Britain, stealing a march on the delegates of the Continental Congress then meeting in Philadelphia. Wrentham officials will be recreating this important event. Representatives of Franklin will be in attendance from 5-7 pm and the public is invited. If you go, don't forget to visit the nearby Rochambeau monument in front of the tennis courts at King Philip Regional High School, commemorating the encampment of the French Army on its way to Boston during the Revolution.

Saturday, June 6

Reading of Wrentham/Franklin Declaration of Independence + PORCHFEST

A `Second Sunday Speaker' Panel: Soccer's Massachusetts Roots and Branches

In coordination with FIFA games continuing at the "Boston Stadium" in Foxboro and drawing inspiration from a May 28 Soccer History Event in New Bedford, the Franklin Historical Museum is hosting a World Class array of experts to delve into the rich, regional history of soccer, which includes the Oneida Football Club that inaugurated organized "foot ball” of all kinds on American soil on Boston Common in 1862 as well as innumerable teams and players in Southeastern, Mass. This session will discuss the growth of soccer in the early part of the 20th century and the popularization of soccer in Franklin and in similar communities. The panelists start with a top-scoring FHS soccer player and long-time soccer coach, Rich Frongillo. Kristine Moore, a historian employed at the Patriot's Hall of fame, holds a Master's degree in Public/Applied History from Southern New Hampshire University and is an expert on the intertwined origins of US football and soccer, will also be attending as well as Dr. Kevin Tallec Marston, long-time Research Fellow & Lecturer with FIFA’s International Centre for Sport Studies (CIES) in Switzerland. He is also current president of the Society for American Soccer History (SASH). Other experts have been invited but have not yet confirmed their attendance. The Museum opens at 1 and the program begins at 1:15 and will continue with a 15 minute break in the middle, until approximately 3:15. Revolutionaries in White: A Look Across Three Centuries of Bridal Fashion

Brides didn't always wear white, but in the 19th century, a number of factors combined to make that the preferred color choice. Today, white remains dominant for American brides as well as for brides in many other lands. Revolutionaries in White will display gowns spanning from the 19th to the 21st century, offering insights into rapid social changes, with groupings that include multi-generational family gowns and the unique 1946 Parachute Dress with its spectacular 13-foot train. The museum is open from 10-1 and Saturday and 1-4 on Sunday. Admission is free but donations are very appreciated. This exhibit will continue through July during regular hours

For Kids' Sake Foundation hosts its annual community fundraising 5K and fireworks festival--this year's 5K features a first-of-its-kind collectible enamel pin experience along the race route, including a limited-edition collaboration pin with An Unlikely Story, the Plainville bookstore owned by Diary of a Wimpy Kid creator Jeff Kinney.

The evening also includes: live music, food and drink vendors, festival games, silent auction & raffle prizes, and an incredible professional fireworks finale

All proceeds fund CAR-T cancer research at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Seattle Children's Hospital.

Residents to Watch for Spotted Lanternfly

The Franklin Conservation Department is reminding residents to remain vigilant for the invasive spotted lanternfly (SLF), as egg masses have begun hatching across Massachusetts. Franklin is among the communities in the Commonwealth with known infestations of the species.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR), tiny black SLF nymphs are now active in some parts of the state, with hatch expected to continue over the next several weeks depending on weather conditions. Residents are encouraged to inspect outdoor surfaces on their property for unhatched egg masses and scrape and crush them when found to help reduce the spread of the invasive pest.

MDAR has provided several helpful resources for residents, including animated educational videos, a Spotted Lanternfly Management Guide available in 12 languages, and a statewide infestation map.

The library will supply dice, rulebooks, and blank character sheets! We will be using the 5th edition books and rules. Other Table Top systems are welcome! - Dungeon Masters must be at least 12 years old and have experience with Dungeon and Dragons.
- Dungeon Masters are required to choose a premade adventure. Homebrew additions to the adventure are allowed.

On behalf of Franklin Fathers, we invite you to become a founding sponsor of our inaugural community kickball tournament and raffle. Franklin Fathers launched in Fall 2025 as a 501(c)(4) community organization dedicated to uniting fathers and caregivers to build family connections, promote wellness, and advocate for local families. In just a few months, our members have contributed over 70 combined volunteer hours with the Franklin Food Pantry and Old Colony Habitat for Humanity. Looking ahead, we are planning wellness seminars for the summer and fall centered on parenting, mental health, and family support — further expanding our impact for local families.

This tournament will serve as our primary fundraiser for the upcoming year, providing the majority of our operational budget to continue hosting community events, volunteer initiatives, and educational programming. In addition, proceeds from the event raffle will be donated to the local VFW in honor of Eddie Grant.

Our members are deeply engaged in Franklin civic life, with many serving or having served on the Town Council, School Committee, 250th Anniversary Celebration Committee, Design Review Commission, Finance Committee, Master Plan Update Committee, Davis-Thayer Building Reuse Advisory Committee, and Planning Board. By sponsoring this event, your business will be aligning with a growing network of engaged local families and community leaders.

We designed this event specifically to highlight and support local businesses.
