“The 200 copies on purple vinyl are the only copies available for pre-sale now, but there will be an additional 800 copies on green vinyl that will be for sale in stores in July. The demand for them is pretty high, so I’m not sure if we’ll have any green vinyl ones for sale on the website. Our advance orders are in from the distributors for the green vinyl and they’re pretty much all accounted for, so they’ll probably only last in stores for a few days before they’re sold out as well!”

Bug Live LP cover by Marq Spusta

This is what Justin Pizzoferrato was talking about on his blog back in March. I love that the cover image is a remake of the original album in the styling of the last two releases, Beyond & Farm, which were also done by Marq Spusta. I hope he makes some poster size prints of this available for purchase as it it awesome.

On May 19th J Mascis will join Kirtan, Devadas and Tony Jarvis at Prema Yoga Brooklyn to benefit Embracing the World.  There have only been a handful of these J Mascis + Friends performances which are very intimate shows and all proceeds go to charity.

At the last show there was a live stream available here ammasdevadas’ Ustream so you may want to check at showtime to see if they are doing it again.

Witch will be playing a gig at Santos House Party in NY to 4/9 (Facebook Event Page) before heading out to the Roadburn festival in Holland so if you are around the area, you will want to put that on your to do list.

The band will be playing a set at the Roadburn Festival (which is sold out) on Friday.

On Saturday, there is this which makes me wonder if some of the Heavy Blanket jams will be in this set as described on the Roadburn site as:

Three Rooms Press will be publishing a new book by Mike Watt titled “On And Off Bass” in May and the launch party includes a Hellride East show with the lineup of Mike Watt, J Mascis & Murph.

Mike Watt got his musical start thumping the bass with legendary San Pedro punk trio, The Minutemen in 1980 and he has been at it ever since. Over the years, he’s toured with Dos, fIREHOSE, his own The Black Gang, The Secondmen, The Missingmen, and others, and he has worked bass as a sideman for Porno for Pyros, J Mascis and the Fog, as well as punk godfathers The Stooges.

Off the road, at his beloved San Pedro, CA home base, Watt developed a deep interest in photography. In Spring 2010, Track 16 Gallery in Santa Monica, CA hosted an exhibit of his photos: “Mike Watt: Eye-Gifts from Pedro.” According to Track 16 executive director Laurie Steelink, who curated the exhibit, “He has this knack for finding the early morning sweet spots when venturing out alone on his bike or kayak. The resulting photographs never seem to dry: light, flight, salt, rust, and tide commingle in fiery sunrises, endless heavens, roiling waves and fog.” The photos offer another side of Watt that fans of his punk rock music may not be familiar with: While seemingly serene, many have an underlying tension and that often shows the sharp contrast between industry and nature.

In “Mike Watt: On and Off Bass,” photographs that appeared in the exhibit are punctuated by Watt’s poetry and snippets selected from 10 years of his diaries. Watt’s writing is insightful, funny, intimate and honest, as he explores topics like John Coltrane, long hauls and overcoming performance fears. “Mike Watt: On and Off Bass” exposes Watt’s vision as a photographer, diarist and poet, taking its readers on a trip. And when you stop turning the pages of Watt’s story, you start turning the pages of yours, re-ignited.

Heavy Blanket

As most of you know, Dinosaur Jr are busy working on a new album as is Witch, Sweet Apple & Lou has mentioned working on new a new Sebadoh Album as well. What you may not have known was that J has also been cranking away at a new shred-filled-vocal-less psych album that absolutely wails. Heavy Blanket promises (and delivers) an album full of epic jams and solos that must be turned up to 11.

Outer Battery Records will be releasing the album on May 8th along with a VERY limited (200) printing on purple vinyl which you can pre-order right now on their website.

Overview

J Mascis rounds up a couple partners-in-crime from his adolescence with an eye – and ear – towards shredding harder, wailing louder, and generally melting faces even more brutally than ever before. Stoner dirtbags cloaked in mystery, j’s longtime buddies Pete Cougar and Johnny Pancake lay down the heavy rhythm base for j’s massive licks and blistering guitar mastery.
