On the 10th January, Richard Branson will be kick-starting Virgin's quest to make banking better with a world first: 270˚ outdoor projection mapping.

On Tuesday 10th January at 5.15pm, BMB neon launched the first ever 270 degree fully immersive 3D projection for Virgin Money. Against three walls of the inner courtyard of Senate House in Bloomsbury, the three minute spectacular will be kicked off by Sir Richard Branson and take the viewers on a exhilarating journey through the Virgin brand story – the two and a half minute ad featured iconic images from the Virgin stable including hot air balloons, trains, planes, even space shuttles. And at the end of the dazzling display the Virgin Money logo appeared with the strapline: "40 years of better. Now in a bank."

Later Richard Branson told the BBC: "People are suspicious of banks and they have good reason to be after the last few years. "The Virgin brand is well trusted and has always offered good products in a range of different businesses..We think we can come in and shake up the industry."

Virgin bought Northern Rock at the end of last year and plans to turn all 75 branches into Virgin Money branches during 2012. Trevor Beattie, Co Founder of BMB said: "It's not every day you help launch a high street bank. And this being Virgin, we wanted to do it in as spectacular and memorable a fashion as possible. Neon have pulled out all the stops on this. The world will seem very 2 dimensional afterwards."

The media first was developed by BMB neon, their first project with Virgin Money, who worked with the production house Projection Advertising to ensure the VIP viewers will be ducking, gasping and left awe-inspired by the 3D spectacular in which they'll be standing.

Japan's Homare Sawa wins Ballon d'Or award

Japan's World Cup Football winning team captain Homare Sawa was named winner of the FIFA World Player 2011 on Monday at a glamorous gala in the Kongresshaus in Zurich.

The 33 year old Japanese striker made history as the first ever Asian winner of a World Player award. She received the award from popstar Shakira.

Sawa beat off Brazilian Marta and denied her a sixth successive triumph. Marta was second placed by picking up 17.28 per cent of the votes, while the fellow japanese received 28.51 per cent of the votes.

Her Japanese World Cup Football winning team's coach Norio Sasaki won the FIFA World Coach Women's Football award. The awards are voted for by the coaches and captains of the world's national teams, as well as international media.

Barcelona's Argentine forward player Lionel Messi was named winner of the FIFA World Player 2011 on Monday at a glamorous gala in the Kongresshaus in Zurich.

The 24 year old Barca player, who made history by becoming the first Argentine player to win the award in 2009, beat off his teammate Xavi and Real Madrid's star Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi received 47.88 per cent of the vote, beating Ronaldo, who was second with 21.60 per cent and Xavi with 9.23 per cent of the vote.

This is the third successive year he is winning the FIFA Ballon d’Or award. The award crowns a successful year for Messi, who won the Champions League, the Spanish League, the World Club Cup, as well as the Spanish and UEFA Super Cups with Barcelona.

Addressing media persons he said “It is a huge pleasure. It is the third time and it is a huge honour and I would like to share this award with my teammates both in Barcelona and Argentina.

“I want to share this also with my teammate Xavi. It is the fourth time we are here together and it is an honour to play together on the pitch”.

Scientists have nailed an alarming prediction about the cataclysmic destruction of earth in 2012.

An erroneous doomsday theory doing the rounds is that a supernova explosion, which releases energy equivalent to that produced during the sun's entire lifetime, could happen in 2012 and harm earthly life.

However, given the vastness of space and the long light years between supernovae, astronomers say with certainty that there is no threatening star close enough to hurt earth.

According to a statement by NASA-Goddard Space Flight Centre, astronomers say that the closest gamma-ray burst on record, known as GRB 031203, is 1.3 billion light years away from the earth.

An erroneous doomsday theory predicts that year 2012 may experience a supernova explosion and the incredible amounts of energy resulting from it – as much as the sun creates during its entire lifetime– may harm life on Earth. However, astronomers are confident that it will not prove
detrimental for life on earth, given the vastness of space and the long times between supernovae.

They can say with certainty that there is no threatening star close enough to hurt Earth.

Astronomers estimate that, on average, about one or two supernovae explode each century in our galaxy. But for Earth’s ozone layer to experience damage from a supernova, the supernovablast must occur less than 50 light-years away. All of the nearby stars capable of going supernova are much farther than this.

Any planet with life on it near a star that goes supernova would indeed experience problems. X- and gamma-ray radiation from the supernova could damage the ozone layer, which protects us from harmful ultraviolet light in the sun’s rays. The less ozone there is, the more UV light reaches the surface.

At some wavelengths, just a 10 percent increase in ground-level UV can be lethal to some organisms, including phytoplankton near the ocean surface. Because these organisms form the basis of oxygen production on Earth and the marine food chain, any significant disruption to them could cascade into a planet-wide problem.

Another explosive event, called a gamma-ray burst (GRB), is often associated with supernovae. When a massive star collapses on itself or less frequently, when two compact neutron stars collide -- the result is the birth of a black hole.

Astronomers estimate that a gamma-ray burst could affect Earth from up to 10,000 light-years away with each separated by about 15 million years, on average. So far, the closest burst on record, known as GRB 031203, was 1.3 billion light-years away.

As with impacts, our planet likely has already experienced such events over its long history, but there’s no reason to expect a gamma-ray burst in our galaxy to occur in the near future, much less in December 2012.

This year, Formula one world champion Sebastian Vettel and Drivers champion Red Bull Racing are among the nominees to win prestigious Laureus World Sports awards 2012 following their successes this season.

Sebastian Vettel scored 392 points with as many as 11 wins, 15 pole position, 3 fastest lap and 17 podium finishes. Drivers champion Red Bull Racing team too had a wonderful season with 12 victories from 19 races and scoring 650 points.

Chasing Vettel for the "Sportsman of the Year" award are Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, tennis world no.1 Novak Djokovic, Tour de France winner Cadel Evans, footballer Lionel Messi and basketballer Kirk Nowitzki.

And fighting it out hard with Red Bull Renault for the team prize are New Zealand's All Blacks, England cricket team, basketball's Dallas Mavericks, FC Barcelona and Japan's female football team.

The nominees are selected by the world's media by ballot method, and the winners by a jury made up of 47 of the greatest sportsmen and women of all time.

World's Most Expensive Car Crash in Japan

8 Ferraris, 3 Mercedes-Benzes, 2 Toyota Prius and 1 Lamborghini were involved in a 14 vehicle pileup crash on a Japanese highway this Sunday. The cost of the freak accident was more than $1 million, the Daily Yomiuri reports.

Most of the luxury cars were traveling in a convoy for a sports car enthusiasts gathering in Hiroshima, the Associated Press reports.

The AP says the damage could easily top $1 million in a country where even a used Ferrari can fetch $100,000. The Japanese media put the bill as high as $3.8 million, AFP reports.

According to police source, 10 people were hospitalized in the early morning pileup on the Chugoku Expressway in Yamaguchi.

Police believed one of the Ferraris tried to change lanes, hit the median barrier and spun across the freeway. The other cars crashed while trying to avoid hitting the first car.

Later as police reported it was found that 60 year old self-employed man from Chikushino in southern Fukuoka, was driving over the 80km per hour speed limit and lost control of his red Ferrari.

Kimi Raikkonen Returns to Formula One with Renault Lotus

Former world champion Kimi Raikkonen will make an eagerly anticipated comeback to Formula One next season after signing a 2-year contract with Renault, the team which will be called as Lotus in 2012. The taciturn but party loving Kimi, who won 18 races, 62 podiums and 16 pole positions with McLaren and Ferrari in a Formula One career that started with Sauber in 2001, remains hugely popular among F1 fans who know him as the 'Iceman'. The 32 year old Raikkonen won his first world championship title with Ferrari in 2007 but quit Formula One two years later and switched to rallying.

Kimi said the two years he spent in rallying had been useful for him as a driver, but that he had an overwhelming hunger to return to Formula One. "I have been impressed by the scope of the team's ambition. Now I'm looking forward to playing an important role in pushing the team to the very front of the grid," added the Finn.

The team, no longer owned by Renault, will race under the name of their title sponsor Lotus in 2012. They did not say who Raikkonen's team mate would be, although
Russian Vitaly Petrov has a contract for 2012. Poland's Robert Kubica, the Pole who was supposed to be Renault's leading driver this year, will not be there after missing the entire season due to life-threatening injuries sustained in a rally accident in February. Out of contract with Renault at the end of this year, Kubica's chances of racing in 2012 now look more remote after Raikkonen's appointment, although he has been linked to Ferrari.

Raikkonen's presence means the Formula One grid for the first time in its history will have six champions — the others being Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel lining up to start the next season in Melbourne, March 2012.

Raikkonen Williams deal intensifies

Formula one fans are waiting for their cool hero to come return. Yes! the Finnish 'iceman' Kimi Raikkonen is in the Formula 1 rador again after a short stint at World Rally Championship. The 32 year old Raikkonen is definitely motivated to return to Formula 1 that gave him 18 wins between 2001 and 2009.

Raikkonen is looking for a driver's seat at Williams where Rubens Barrichello's contract expires this year. Negotiations have under going between Williams team and Raikkonen. The news has taken yet another step with Sir Frank Williams, the Williams team founder has confirmed in an interview with Finnish television broadcaster MTV3 that the team is interested in hiring Kimi Raikkonen, if the price is right.

Kimi who won the F1 world Driver Championship in 2007 was paid $51 million annually by Ferrari. Even the formula one teams and management wants him back on the grid. Many current and former drivers and team principals in Formula One are hoping that Raikkonen will return to F1. Seven time Champion Michael Schumacher believes it would be really good for F1 if Kimi does make a return.

Stefano Domenicali, team principal at Ferrari while Kimi Raikkonen was there in 2007-2008 said, "Kimi is a talented driver, one of the fastest and our latest WDC. It would be great if he would come back."

During the Friday press conference at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh also advised Frank Williams to sign Raikkonen.

IPL 2011: Dada back in IPL; Sourav Ganguly joins Pune Warriors

Good news for some diehard 'dada' fans. The prince of Kolkata, Sourav Ganguly, has been signed by Pune Warriors as a replacement for bowler Ashish Nehra, who was ruled out for the remainder of the IPL 2011 season with a finger injury. Dada's contract with Pune Warriors is for a period of one year and its considered as an IPL lifeline to the legend after he went unsold at the player auction earlier this year. His base price was $400,000.

Ganguly will be the vice-captain of PW and is likely to join the squad ahead of their big clash against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on May 4.

Ganguly played for KKR in the first three seasons of the IPL and led the team in two of them, while wicket keeper batsman Brendon McCullum was captain for the last season. Kolkata played poorly in those years and are the only franchise not to make the semi-finals. KKR did not bid for Ganguly in January despite his name coming up for sale twice, as they revamped their squad entirely, and the batsman later refused a mentoring role with the franchise.

Pune Warriors is at the bottom of the points table at present, having lost 6 consecutive matches after winning their first two. Ganguly who has an average IPL record of 1031 runs at an average of 28 and strike-rate of 110 could strengthen an under-performing and short batting order.

Bhagwan Sathya Sai Baba Passes Away

Indian Hindu holy man Bhagwan Sathya Sai Baba (86), considered a living god by millions of followers worldwide, died Sunday in a hospital near his southern Indian ashram, doctors said. The saffron dressed Sathya Sai Baba had a huge following with ashrams in more than 126 countries around the world. The holy man was never married and has no children. Born on November 23, 1926, in Puttaparti, the guru was first named Sathyanarayana Raju.

Sai Baba had spent more than 3 weeks on breathing support and dialysis while struggling with multiple-organ failure at the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, near his ashram in Puttaparti village in Andhra Pradesh state. He died Sunday morning, hospital director Dr.A.N.Safaya said.

Devotees grieve on hearing the news of the holy man Sathya Sai Baba's death in Puttaparti on April 24, 2011. Women selling marigold garlands broke down in tears outside ashram when they hears the sad news.

Followers gathered to mourn in small groups in alleys and streets surrounding the ashram, while some tried entering the temple complex where the holy man's body will be brought to lie in state until Tuesday. Hundreds of thousands of devotees are expected in Puttaparti for Sathya Sai Baba's funeral.

Wayne Rooney's hat-trick inspires Manchester United against West Ham United

Manchester United stormed 7 points clear at the top of the Premier League standings after a hat-trick from Wayne Rooney inspired them to come back from 2 goals down to beat West Ham United 4-2.

Manchester United's bid for a record 19th English league title was helped by second-placed Arsenal shedding points in a 0-0 home draw with Blackburn Rovers. Chelsea almost gave up the defence of their title with a 1-1 draw at Stoke City.

The weekend's other big winners were Manchester United's neighbors/enemies Manchester City who leapfrogged defending champion Chelsea into 3rd place with a 5-0 hammering of visitors Sunderland after manager Roberto Mancini's more attacking formation paid dividends.

Apart from a stunning win, the only thing that sours for Manchester United was Rooney's expletive-laden outburst on live television while he was celebrating taking just 14 minutes to notch a treble. Later he apologised but will discover on Monday whether he faces any FA disciplinary action.

Manchester United now has 66 points from 31 matches, with Arsenal on 59 from 30 matches. Manchester City has 56 points from 31 and Chelsea has 55 from 30.

Sebastian Vettel wins Australian Melbourne F1 Grand prix

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel made a perfect start to his 2011 Formula One Championship with an invincible win(25 points) in the Australian Grand Prix. McLaren's Lewis Hamilton finished second(18 points) ahead of Vitaly Petrov joining him third(15 points) on the podium. The podium finishers made use of two stop strategy.

Ferrai's Fernando Alonso finished fourth(12 points), Vettel's teammate Australian Mark Webber finished fifth(10 points), as both used 3-stop strategies. Mclaren's Button was sixth(8 points), falling short in his bid to win the race for a third consecutive year. Earlier, he was given a drive through penalty after using a slip road to pass Ferrari's Felipe Massa, and that cost him a shot at third.

Sauber's Sergio Perez made an impressive seventh in his first grand prix and he did so with a remarkable one pit strategy. He finished well ahead of his teammate Kamui Kobayashi who finished eigth. But both of them were later disqualified for rear wing infringements. As a result of this disqualification, Ferrari's Felipe Massa, Toro Rosso's Sebastien Buemi, Force India's Adrian Sutil and Paul di Resta took the last four positions orderly.
