ChannelMeter’s assessment of the Channel Frederator Network inspired this postcard, but it also got me nostalgic and a bit thoughtful.
When we first started Channel Frederator way back in 2005, Eric, Carrie, Mike, David, Kevin and I knew that we wanted our piece of the internet to be a place where independent animated filmmakers could share their work with the world. Full stop. We weren’t interested in absconding with people’s intellectual property rights, we didn’t have a conquer the world type of agenda, we just wanted to help in any way we could.
And when the current Frederator Networks team decided to expand the channel into a network, nothing about that mission changed even a little bit. Right out of the block we knew a few things:
The Declaration of Cartoon Independents: the same as 10 years ago, we wanted a place when animation creators could freely produce whatever work was meaningful to them, and program a channel any way they were comfortable.
100% creator owned: We care about rights as much as our creators do, so from the very beginning we tried to make it clear that the channels in our network own their creators entirely. We don’t ask for an ownership position to be in the network, and we never will.
Grow! Grow, Grow! We’ve always wanted to help animators reach bigger audiences. After all, filmmakers are just like any other kind of performer, they want a little love and applause. It’s worked. The average channel that’s been on our network for a year or more has grown 106%, more than double. That’s not nothing.
We return your emails: We hated hearing from creators that the networks they joined ignored them, or worse. I grew up in a Mom & Pop retail store, helping customers from the time I was in kindergarten, and I was determined to lend a hand to anyone who entrusted us with their hard won creative work. Whether the channel is tiny or huge, we’re there for you.
And not for nothing, I try and talk to anyone who gets in contact with me. I’m a little flaky, I’m not always prompt, but I try really hard.
We help creators grow through direct contact and support from our Community Managers, network wide collaborations, featuring animations on Channel Frederator’s “Saturday Morning Cartoons” and Cartoon Hangover’s “CH Loves”, monthly livestreams with animation and online industry professionals, best practices hangouts and channel reviews.
There’s a lot more –free audio and SFX, distribution, technology, community– but hopefully I’ve been clear. We love the members of our network, and we thank them every day for joining us. With any luck, we’ll all continue to grow together.

There’s nothing fake about this $2 bill, or about Thomas Jefferson, who signed the Channel Frederator Network’s “Declaration of Cartoon Independents.” As of August 1 there are 1,954 fully independent, self owned and programmed animation channels in the network. That’s a lot of cartoons, but more importantly, a lot of self sufficiency in our community. Like Tom would have liked it.
And –more detail about this in another post– but I’d be remiss in not pointing out how amazingly the actual Channel Frederator is doing. 17 million views this past month alone, and growing fast. Check it out!

The first argument I had with my new boss in cable, the media visionary Bob Pittman, was in early May 1980 at The Movie Channel. I’d handed in my first script for my first promo (”James Bond Week”), Bob crossed out my last line “Only on The Movie Channel,” and scribbled…

“Conveniently schedule on The Movie Channel.”

Quizzed, Bob told me “Convenience always wins.” I argued with him for months (who wants to be edited?), but I’ve been quoting his long held wisdom ever since. Because he was right, Bob was always right.

“Content is King.”
“It’s all about the distribution.”
“The company with the most money (technology, design, ideas, fill in the blank) triumphs.”

In the media business, everyone you talk to knows everything. They (hell, me) can bleat on and on as to why their hypothesis is the right one. But Bob was on to something. Every real media innovation –the printing press, telegraphs, telephones, radio, television, VCRs– made our lives more easier, and it’s no knock on the human condition that we like things to become less complicated.

Think about everything from the cotton gin, which kicked off the industrial revolution, or Ford’s Model T, the first really popular automobile, or the iPhone for that matter. Hammers, screwdrivers, the printing press, electric lights, indoor plumbing, you name it, we’ve spent thousands of years figuring out convenient methods of accomplishing tasks.

When technology solves a problem for media, figuring out an easier way for something to happen, of course we all jump as fast as possible. If you’re old enough, remember seeing your first cassette or Walkman. What must it have been like to hear radio for the first time, or television? To some it seemed like the Devil was visiting earth it was so mind blowing. But, of course, it was all of us adopting a simpler way to get information, entertainment, eye or ear candy.

Naturally, we quickly wanted HBO when there suddenly became a way to see movies –unedited for content or length, no commercials– in our own homes. When Netflix made it even easier who the heck thought they were going to fail?

Let’s project ourselves into the future, shall we? Which one of us will opt out of Google’s self driving car, and insist on a vehicle with manual wind down windows and stick shifts? And Uber, what are those worldwide fights about? Convenience, it always wins out.

The concept of convenience doesn’t answer every question in media, for sure. There are a lot of complicating factors, timing, pricing, marketing, you know the rest. But for me, when an old idea is dominant, and a new one comes along that makes it easier for me to get what I want when, where, and how I want it, I’m there, and fast. YouTube, anyone?!

We’ve all heard the theories as to who will be champion in the future of media. Whenever the pontification begins, I remember that Bob Pittman is always right.

“Convenience always wins.”

The Fredbot Fredbots were designed by one of the earliest contributors to Channel Frederator in 2005, the inimitable Ben Ross. He came over as an intern (and then full time colleague) the next year and started sketching variations on our original robot that was designed by the equally incomparable Arlen Schumer. When chief New York Frederator Carrie Miller suggested Ben’s stuff would be perfect for our newest channel, we knew we’d hit the jackpot.

… I always believe that finding a new comedian is a great business. People love that they didn’t know Zach Galifianakis when The Hangover came out. People love Rebel Wilson in Pitch Perfect. They love Melissa McCarthy in everything she does with Paul Feig. That’s my main pitch: People love stars but they love finding the next person, too, and it’s inherently less expensive to make a movie with someone in the earlier part of their career. We started the revival of cartoon shorts in the early 90s when I ran Hanna-Barbera Cartoons, and we haven’t stopped yet. We’re at over 250 shorts though our various series from What A Cartoon! through Oh Yeah!, The Meth Minute 39 and Random! Cartoons, right up to Cartoon Hangover’s Too Cool! and GO! Cartoons. Every one of our hit creators has a series that started as a short, just like the greats did it in the early 20th century.

So, I thought it was time to commemorate our first 20 years with a book of postcards that celebrate our creators, and then, of course, sending out a limited edition postcard about the book of limited edition postcards.
