BWI Marshall (IATA: BWI, ICAO: KBWI), is located 31.7 miles (51.0 km) northeast of the city in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, south of Baltimore. BWI is notable for its variety of low-cost carriers, such as Southwest Airlines, and its few international flights, on carriers such as Air Canada and British Airways.

Reagan National Airport and Dulles International Airport are operated by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.

General aviation is additionally available at several smaller airfields, including Montgomery County Airpark (Gaithersburg, Maryland), College Park Airport (College Park, Maryland), Potomac Airfield (Friendly CDP of Prince George's County, Maryland), and Manassas Regional Airport (Manassas, Virginia). Since 2003, the general aviation airports closest to Washington, D.C. have had their access strictly limited by the implementation of the Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).

Metrorail's Yellow and Blue Lines serve Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Express bus service from L'Enfant Plaza, West Falls Church and Rosslyn is provided to Washington Dulles International Airport. Baltimore-Washington International Airport is served by express bus from Greenbelt, and by rail from Union Station by MARC and Amtrak, although MARC's service only runs Monday-Friday. There is also a planned station for Dulles airport on the upcoming Silver Line.

Does the newly unshared Airport Shuttle truly deliver for the cost, out-of-pocket – your pockets!

The truth is that all transportation services like to brag they show up on time, or inhumanly quick after an order is placed. But we know how long we have each of us waited for the taxi, the hotel van, your buddy in the company whose region is in Toledo, you get the picture. Sooner or later, the transportation arrives and usually with little or no interference whatsoever. Both Taxi’s and Shuttle’s claim to be unforgiving when it comes to showing up on time and make saccharin sweet promises to arrive at the desired pickup location on time, or even early!

If you’re taking a taxi from Frederick to any of the three major airports – you’re telling that cabbie this is going to be a good fare. Of course , he can make it sweeter by helping out with your luggage and packing it neatly into the vehicle. Usually, cabbies will take the time to do this but it’s not always why you think it is: to be nice. Wrong. Cabbies don’t want your luggage scratching and scuffing all over their vehicle. Neither does the Shuttle guy so in most cases, you’ll get the luggage assistance service from both companies.

Riding a taxi alone – or shared – is a privilege and it’s often a choice. Suppose your snuggled into the back seat of your shuttle and when you look out the back window you see the young man who sat with on the plane and walked you to the gates with grace and care. District of Columbia, to the Inner Harbor. The taxi’s don’t leave you guessing, you need only lean over the front seat to have a look at what price you will be paying.

There is often reference made to the “dedicated” shuttle – as if it’s “dedicated” to you and your trip but let me tell you that sometimes that dedication costs in the regions of $300, three hundred dollars for just a safe, friendly ride home for the airport.

Nevermind the loneliness, the inability to split the fare, and possibility of feeling obligated to leave a tip you really can’t afford, doesn’t it make more sense to take a Taxicab?

There’s one on every corner, they all know the routes, and after all, their professional drivers.

STEP 2:

Consider insurance. If you're travelling far from home, it may give you some peace of mind to have health insurance while you're gone. In the event of a medical emergency, your expenses will be covered. You can usually secure this type of travel insurance for a nominal fee. If you do purchase it, keep a copy with your other travel documents, and leave a copy with a loved one in the event that your luggage is lost or you are unable to retrieve the necessary information while you're away.

STEP 3:

Pack your carry-on. No matter how long or short your air travel is, you will likely get bored during the flight. So make sure you pack something to do in your carry-on bag. Crosswords, novels, laptops and mp3 players are all basic air travel necessities. Also, include a set of spare clothes in your carry-on bag in the event that your luggage is lost. You'll be grateful for that pair of fresh clothes. Ensure that all liquids are less than 1 oz or 30mL each and transport each in a resealable plastic bag. (This is law, and anything over the liquid limit will be confiscated!) Don't forget to keep your medications and prescriptions with you at all times too. Some people prefer to carry valuables in their carry-ons as well, although there is always a risk for theft no matter where your valuables are so it may not be the best idea. Ensure that your carry-on meets necessary size restrictions, and that it is comfortable for you to carry. (One with rolling wheels is best.)

STEP 4:

Pack your suitcase. The last part of preparing for air travel is packing your suitcase. Check out the weather conditions for your travel destination and pack accordingly. Make sure you have enough undergarments for each day, and then throw in an extra pair or two just in case. Pack enough shirts, shorts, pants, bathing suits, pajamas and formal attire to get your through your stay. Remember that you can wear most pants and sweatshirts for more than one day, so try not to over-pack these bulky items. Include your camera, accessories like belts and earrings, your toiletries and everything else that you think you'll need while you're away. Then be sure to weigh your suitcase to ensure that it meets the necessary weight restriction for the airline you're travelling with. Close up your suitcase and mark with an identifiable tag, colored belt or ribbon so that you can quickly recognize your luggage on the luggage belt. With your travel documents, carry-on and suitcase properly prepared, your air travel will be an enjoyable and (hopefully) problem-free experience.

It seems this company makes up for that low price by charging extra for carry bags and such...

below is the fine print that came with the email I got from Spirit Airlines:

Terms and Conditions
* Individual travel-date specific fares must be booked on spiritair.com by 11:59PM ET on January 9, 2010 for travel on the dates as specified by individual market and by market direction. Fares are for coach class travel unless otherwise specified and reflect the spiritair.com discount. Fares are each way based on roundtrip purchase, and roundtrip travel is required, but these fares may be combined with other valid and applicable Spirit Airlines fares on other dates of travel. Not all markets are operated on a daily basis during the travel period, or necessarily for the entire travel period -- please see spiritair.com for details. All fares include a Passenger Usage Fee of $7.00 per passenger per direction. All customers are allowed one free carry-on bag. Fees for bags paid in advance online at www.spiritair.com are $19 each way for the first bag only. The fee for Bag 2 is $25 each way, and items 3 thru 5 are $100.00 per item each way. When paying at the airport, fees for the first and second bags are $25 per bag each way. There is no charge to check wheelchairs, strollers, car seats, or other assistive devices. Items that are overweight or oversized will continue to be weighed and sized at the airport, and fees collected when checking in. Golf club and boxes/containers are acceptable and can be prepaid online provided they meet weight and or size restrictions. Additional bags can be pre-purchased at any time provided inventory is available. (No less than one (1) hour prior to departure). All checked baggage fees are non-refundable. Customers involved in a stop-over flight that involves a connection of over 4 hours will be charged based on point to point travel. All fares listed on spiritair.com are per customer for each way of travel and include the base fare plus a federal excise tax and all fuel surcharges. Fares do not include (a) a segment tax of $3.60 per U.S. domestic flight segment (a flight segment is defined as one takeoff and landing) of a passenger’s itinerary; (b) up to $18 per round trip in local airport charges; or (c) a September 11th Security Fee of $2.50 per enplanement originating at a U.S. airport. International itineraries do not include governmental taxes and fees (including U.S. government excise tax) of up to $125 per round trip. Additionally, if sold in, or travel originates in a country outside of the U.S., additional taxes may apply (up to 22% of the fare value per country). Fares are subject to availability and may not be available on all flights or on all days, and will be highly restricted around certain holiday periods. So how are you going to get to BWI?

You *could* drive, pay to park, wait for the bus to take FROM the parking spot...

You *could* avoid traffic headaches and get picked up from where ever you are and let a shuttle take you *and* pick you up.

I just picked my daughter up from BWI recently, she flew on Southwest (as so many do), the flight was delayed from the bad weather on the Atlantic. I got ready to pick her up at BWI from 4:00 PM, flight was supposed to land at 6:00 PM, they didn't get on the plane until 7:00 PM

I'd already driven from Frederick Maryland to BWI, she didn't arrive at BWI until 9:00 PM.

We got home at 10:30 PM

So...that's 6 and a half hours of MY time... Shuttle sounds pretty good to me right now!
