Clinic Hours: All sites: 9am to 4pm

If you can not wait until the next available appointment, you may go to the clinic as a walk-in, but go early; only a limited number of walk-ins can be seen. Some sites see new patients only as walk-ins.

NOTE: As of July 2010 the Harrisburg site is only seeing scheduled medical appointments. No new medical patients can be seen in Harrisburg at this time. Only a limited number of walk-ins of existing medical patients can be seen in Harrisburg at this time. No change in the dental clinic - walk-ins (first-come first- served) for fillings or extractions can be seen in the dental clinic.
The Reisterstown site is now accepting new patients.

Prenatal Clinic Site: Available at the Frederick Clinic Site Only. Expected mothers please arrive at 9am at the Frederick Church of the Bretheren when the clinic is scheduled in Frederick. You will be seen on a first-come first-served basis.

A Mission of Mercy's Maryland/Pennsylvania Mobile Medical & Dental Clinic Program has been serving the sick and needy in the region since 1994. It has grown into a charitable organization that serves nearly 5,000 patients annually at seven clinic sites in Maryland and two in South Central Pennsylvania via a mobile medical van.
At Mission of Mercy, no one is denied care. All services are provided free, regardless of race, color, creed, national origin or religion.
Headquartered in Frederick, Maryland, The Maryland Pennsylvania mobile program provides free:

Primary care
Non-emergency care for acute illness
Episodic and long-term treatment of chronic illnesses (such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, arthritis, depression, etc.)
Prenatal care
Physical therapy
Prescription medications
Dental care (primarily fillings and extractions)

Through our network of community partners, patients also receive free:

Laboratory and blood work
Imaging services (X-rays, MRIs, etc.)
A limited number of surgeries

Mission of Mercy does not accept government funding, a policy that enables our patients to receive care without the degrading experience of having to prove their poverty. All funding is provided by private contributions from individuals, foundations, corporations, service organizations, churches, special events, and more. Mission of Mercy is a registered charity and is a 501(c)(3) organization. All donations are tax deductible.

Ann's Story

Without medical insurance, Ann had to make a difficult decision: provide for her children or take her monthly medication.

For Ann, the Mission of Mercy clinic in Brunswick, MD is a place where "they really, really do help you!" Ann is a second generation Mission of Mercy patient - her father introduced her to M.O.M. many years ago when he received assistance for chronic illnesses. And when she needed Mission of Mercy, we were here for her, too. Although Ann is a young woman in her early 40's, Ann's body has been through a lot - cervical cancer and a hysterectomy at age 27, osteoporosis and most recently, depression.

Without medical insurance for the past three years, Ann had to quit taking her medications, and it had been two and a half years since her last check-up. She just did not have access to care, and could not afford it on her own. She had tried other government and community resources, but said that she found only limited assistance, like free exams, and no help with costly medications.

With a 16 year old son and 12 year old daughter to care for, Ann tired to make ends meet through her night job as a stocker at a big-box store. However, a recent onset of depression had left her unable to work due to severe mood swings. Showing remarkable gumption, Ann came specifically to Mission of Mercy to be seen for her condition, desperately hoping that the treatment would enable her to get back to work... hoping for help with the medications she should be taking... and hoping for a better future for herself and her family.

Mission of Mercy was there for Ann, providing her with the resources that she needed at that difficult time of her life. Ann is now a fully functioning mother and once again gainfully employed.

PONTIAC, Mich. -- The lowest point in Lawanda Madden's life came in February, when she woke up on the floor of her friend's run-down house in this city battered by recession. She was shivering with cold. She remembers turning to her 8-year-old son, Jovon, and thinking: "How did this happen to us? How did we become homeless?

Only 15 months before, Madden, 39, had a $35,000-a-year job, a two-bedroom apartment and a car. She was far from rich, but she could treat Jovon to the movies. She occasionally visited her sister in Chicago and bowled in a local league. She dreamed of going to law school. Then she was laid off and lost everything.

"I've had a job since I was 19," she recalled. "I never imagined I would be without a home. You think it's going to get better -- that it's just temporary -- and then six months goes by, and you wonder, 'Wait a minute -- this might be it.' "

With neat hair and clean clothes, a college education and stable job history, Madden represents the new face of American homelessness.

Across the country, community housing networks, charities and emergency shelters are seeing a flood of people like her -- mothers driven out of their homes by the economic collapse. Even as the economy shows signs of improving, the number of homeless families keeps going up. In more and more cases, these people have never been homeless before.

More than half a million family members used an emergency shelter or transitional housing between Oct. 1, 2007, and Oct. 1, 2008, the latest figures available from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The number of homeless families rose 9 percent, and in rural and suburban areas by 56 percent. Women make up 81 percent of adults in homeless families, and tend to be younger than 30 with children younger than 5.

an enlightening experience for me to say the least!

For every 4 people who I manage to get to pledge or promise to donate, only one actually comes out of their pocket to follow through.

Is this the norm for fund raising?

I hope not, but it probably is.

The Frederick Memorial Hospital helps Frederick's A Mission of Mercy.

I didn't know when I went to FMH for cat scans and other tests for my severe kiddney stones but the FMH does not charge the non profit "A Mission of Mercy" for the tests neccessary to diagnose the uninsured and under insured that A Mission of Mercy cares for!

Hats off the the Frederick Memorial Hosptial!

They are covering the costs out of their own pocket.

Frederick Rescue Mission Needs Turkeys

Fredrick Rescue Mission does an Annual Turkey Drive to help give needy families a Thanksgiving dinner. There is much demand this year and they will have to turn some families away. Here is some more details about the drive and how you can help …

Annual Turkey Drive distribution will be held this Saturday, November 22 from 2-4 pm. So far, over 200 needy families and individuals have signed up to receive a Thanksgiving food box, but we've had to turn many people away for lack of supplies. If you have a few extra dollars to put towards these needs, we would be so grateful, as would that family who will be able to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal!

Note: the homeless and under employed will still make very good use of your thoughtful donation even if you don't get it to the Rescue Mission until AFTER Thanksgiving!!!

Every year, the under employed go to both the Rescue Mission and the Frederick Community Action Agency in search of a Holiday turkey only to discover that they got there too late!

So don't think that "I didn't get to get there and now it's too late" because it's NOT too late... even if it's the first week in December and you're just now getting around to it.

Be A Santa Claus for someone who needs it.

I found out about a couple of holiday programs that offer opportunities for you to help our community . These sound like they could really bring Christmas Cheer to someone who otherwise wouldn't get much of that.

There is a program through the Home Instead Senior Care office called Be a Santa to a Senior.

This program is simple.

If you are in any of the local WalMarts between November 19th and December 10th, there will be Christmas trees decorated with ornaments that will have the first name of a local deserving senior and an item that they need.

Simply choose an ornament, buy the item and return the gift, along with the ornament to the store.

There is another worthy cause called Operation PJ Pile Up, and it's being held at our own FSK Mall.

The folks who own & operate FSK Mall, PREIT are teaming up with the Pajama Programto deliver warm sleepwear and nurturing books to children who until now have done without.

The "Newly Poor"

Alan Christian PR counsel for Frederick's "Religious Coalition for Emergency Human Needs" described the upsurge in demand facing Frederick County's 8 food banks as:

"An evolution of the newly poor"

Wow, that says it all doesn't it?

Last year in September 2007 the Frederick Food Bank served 700 people.
This September it served 1700 people.

Local churches are bringing in roughly half of the bags of groceries that they brought in last year (cost of food going up - fruits and vegetables are up 10% over last year).

When interviewed by the Frederick News Post, Sarah McLeavey, director of the City of Frederick's George Shields Food Bank on 14 East All Saints Street, Frederick, MD 21701. Telephone: 301-600-6263 said she is spending about $1,600 every week and a half on groceries.

Frederick Community Action Agency

When I first learned of the Frederick Food Bank and the Frederick Soup Kitchen I assumed the operations where run by a church organization like Frederick's Religious Coalition.

I was surprised to find out the Frederick Community Action Agency is a quasi government/ Non profit set up that is actually staffed by City of Frederick employees.

The FCAA runs both a Soup Kitchen and the Frederick Food Bank.

This box for private citizens to donate food the the Frederick Food Bank was found at the Walmart Super Center in Frederick Maryland.

Scene from the inside of the Frederick Community Action Agency's Soup Kitchen, the people serving food are volunteers, usually from local church groups.

Officer Johnson of the City of Frederick Police force helping serve food at the Frederick Soup Kitchen. The city provides security during dinner at the Soup Kitchen.

Having been a client of the Food Bank myself I can tell you this:

If you're going to donate canned food... some homeless people do NOT have a can opener!

If you can, donate cans that have pop tops.

Some semi homeless people rent rooms that share bathrooms... there is no toilet paper.
I'm not going to list rooming houses that offer shared bathrooms, but I can tell you that it's great to have some option to sleeping outside if you DO work, can raise the money to pay for a month's rent BUT cannot raise the money for security deposit and couldn't pass the credit check anyway.

Toilet paper, toothpaste, tooth brushes and shampoo is always in short supply at the Food Bank.

Neat bit of Frederick Maryland history trivia: The building that houses both the Frederick Food Bank AND the Frederick Soup Kitchen is the old train station from the Civil War Days.

Unsung heros, donate to charity and no one knows

What I'd planned to do with this blog is still evolving.

For now though, I do intend to champion local businesses that I've learned contributed to local Frederick Maryland (or Western Maryland) charities... and I didn't know that they did that

(assumption being that since I wasn't aware that these business owners stepped up to the plate, it's likely you weren't aware that they did it either.)

What are Muslims Doing in Frederick MD?

Don't get me wrong. What I mean is just that.

I recently had a need to visit the Frederick Food Bank run by the Frederick Community Action Agency. It was closing time... I almost didn't go because I had barely one minute to get from the C. Burr Artz library to the Food Bank on All Saints St & Market St.

The shelves were virtually empty, pretty depressing actually...

Shelves look pretty bare there don't they?

OK, upon finding that the Food Bank has even less on hand than they did when I wrote this article about them for Frederick.com:

I figured that I'd pubicize the plight of the Food Bank and make myself look like a Good Samartian in the process... 2/3 good deed, 1/3 self agrandizment.

These people intentionally did this anonymously.

They crept in after hours to donate all this food:

If I hadn't been there... and had my camera on me... and had batteries in my camera (I just got it, a web client of mine paid for it, I bartered for the camera - I did a website and he bought me the camera)

NO ONE would've known that these Muslim women went to the extraordinary trouble of doing this amazing act of charity.

I believe that God wanted me to be there, right at that time, to record this.

And here's another thing... We're (us, I mean Americans)constantly being told by our media that Muslim's treat their women as second class citizens.

We're told that in Muslim countries, women are relegated to mediocrity, they're allegedly not allowed to make decisions, not allowed to 'make a difference'

Well, it doesn't look that way to me.

The most Christ Like person of the last thousand years was Mahatma Ghandi

Without a Ghandi, there wouldn't have been a Martin Luther King

There'd never have been a Civil Rights Movement in this country when I was moving into adulthood.

... and Ghandi wasn't even Christian

We have more in common than we do that divides us.
