Crayons and Memories…

I have two 5 year old kids (twins) who are in need of a constant supply of activities to keep the preoccupied.  Seeing as I am a firm believer in the ill effects of games that put too much emphasis on fast paced action and little emphasis on creativity and intelligence, I was hard put to find activities that would meet my stringent standards.

It is in time like these that I harken back to my own childhood, reflecting on what I would do as a child.  Memories of board games and playing outside, accompanied by my toy soldiers and colouring books sprang forth.  Of all of these (I am a graphic designer now) my colouring books bring back the fondest memories.

When I was a kid (which was a long time ago) I never thought that there would come a day where my colouring skills would actually translate into a career path and source of income.  However, I enjoyed numerous hours filling in pages, with my trusty crayolas, picking out colors and where to put them.  Slowly watching as the pictures in my super heroes coloring book would come to life.  I remembered how time used to fly for me, sitting in front of those books, in an age where the only screen to be found was the television in the living room that weighed much more than I did.

Back to the present, I considered for a brief moment, amidst my five your olds bringing up destruction in their search for diversion, to give them a coloring book.  This idea vacated my mind as easily as it had entered it.  We were on a road trip to see grandma and grandpa and spent most of the day in the car.  If there was one thing that was not part of my childhood, it was coloring inside a moving car.  Even less appealing was the idea of crayon on my seats.

So on the next rest stop, at the nearest sight of wifi, I looked through the internet to find something for my children to do.  Much to my surprise, coloring had gone digital!  Readily available on my android device, I found the perfect app for my children.  Strapping them into their seats, I quickly showed them how to work the coloring application and started driving off into the distance.

What I would encounter next still amazes me to this day.  Not a sound from my children.  They were intently filling in the pictures with colors, sans the need for paper and crayons.  Slowly enjoying their coloring, the rest of our drive to grandma’s was peaceful and relaxing.  Later on that day, while looking through what they colored, I saw the option to actually email the finished artwork!  Now isn’t that handy.  I could actually send myself and my parents a picture of what Kayden and Karl had colored.

And it didn’t stop there.  The other day, stressed out of my mind meeting a deadline, I decided to grab my phone to look for some distraction.  Shortly, I was happily coloring away on Super Kids Coloring.  Surprisingly finding my stress melting away as I filled out the happy picture on my screen I n warm colors of brown yellow orange blue and green.
