The people in your environment can have a large effect on your health. This is something that cannot be ignored if you are to get well.

Patients often report that someone around them has said:

“You are the weakest one in the family.” “You look so tired.” “Are you sure you’re okay?” “Grandma had ___, so you probably will.”

Or, patients report that someone around them is continually anxious about them and calling them to “make sure they are okay.”

All of this can undermine the confidence that a person has that they can succeed in life and do well physically.

If you have people around you who are unintentionally weakening you in this way, it is best to find a way to resolve it right away.

Some suggestions:

Do not bring up your health or personal life to people who are negative about you.

If this type of person brings you up as a subject, do not respond in any way to their comments. Instead, politely change the subject to something more pleasant, such as art or music or movies.

If the person is very close to you, tell them you have just read something interesting, my health tip on Healing Environment for Adults. Email them a link to it to read or show it to them in person. Tell them that you are really trying to apply this to your life and suggest, “Maybe we could apply this together.” This could have a good effect on their health as well.

Be well!

Cell phone radiation recently landed a spot on the World Health Organization’s list of possible carcinogens. Exposure depends on many factors, including distance from a cell phone tower, battery life and how close the phone is to one’s body.

Renee Sharp, California director for the Environmental Working Group, an environmental advocacy nonprofit, says, “If you use a headset, it’s definitely better, but maybe it’s not better if you’re putting your phone in your pocket. If it’s not your head, it’s your reproductive organs.”

Doctors generally advise precaution, especially for children, whose thinner skulls and still-developing brains leave them more susceptible to the possible health effects of prolonged cellphone use. In the U.S., more than half of children 12 years and older own cellphones, and that number is growing.

My article published in 2001 regarding cell phones can be found here. My updated suggestions are:

Use a landline in your home with non-portable phones that have cords to the base and from the base to the ear-piece. Use these for all phone calls that you possibly can. You can buy extension cords for these landline phones for convenience.

Forward your phone calls to this home phone when you are home.

Keep your cell phone at a distance from you at all possible times. For example, put it on the seat next to you in the car when you are driving.

Use earbuds such as you find on an iPod or use the speaker on your cell phone while you hold it at a distance from your head. Do not use bluetooth near your head area, particularly if you have brain, ear or thyroid problems.

Most cars have speakers whereby the phone does not have to be near your body to use. Take the time to find out how to use these and then use them.

Keep your cell phone 100% turned off when you are asleep.

Do not charge your cell phone in your bedroom or near your food or supplements.

The simpler the cell phone, the less radiation required to run it. Keep them simple if possible.

Try to avoid cell phone usage near your children, especially babies.

Turn off cell phones when in a hospital or medical treatment area, as they can interfere with the proper operation of ventilators and pacemakers.

The main gadget I have found to reduce the physical stress is called a Power Shield pendant (click here to order for $70 + tax) that is worn under your shirt or can be slipped into a bra.

Another gadget that can reduce stress from your own cell phone is called a “Ladybug” (click here to order for $32 + tax) which is a small attachment that you place on the cell phone. These come in a variety of colors and designs that we sell at our office.

Don’t wait for the cell phone industry to protect you, set your own policies to reduce exposure!

Oxalates are a form of oxalic acid, an acid made by plants, animals, and humans. Human bodies regularly change many substances into oxalates; for example, vitamin C, amino acids and sugars are routinely converted into oxalates. In addition to the oxalates made inside humans, oxalates are ingested as part of foods that contain them, such as soda, coffee, soy, black and green tea, beer, bacon, cocoa, specific beans, vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds, grains, and spices.

Organic (containing carbon) oxalic acid is beneficial to humans. It improves the absorption of calcium, if the source of the oxalic acid has not been cooked. When oxalic acid becomes inorganic (not containing carbon) due to a food being cooked or processed, it forms an indigestible compound with calcium that can result in “stones”. About 80% of kidney stones formed by adults in the U.S. are made up of calcium oxalate.

It can be difficult for people to evaluate for themselves what causes their stones, as kidney stones often develop for years and can start to dissolve and mobilize when diets get healthier. However generally speaking, raw unprocessed food is preferable due to the indigestible form of oxalic acid that is produced by heating and processing food.

Regardless of the source of oxalates, what breaks oxalates down is the oxalate-degrading bacteria, Oxalobacter formigenes. This good bacteria lives in the colon of humans. It produces an enzyme that digests oxalates, reducing calcium oxalate stones. There are three other good bacteria, Bifidobacterium lactis, Bifidobacterium infantis, and Lactobacillus acidophilus, that also produce this oxalate-digesting enzyme.

Unless these good bacteria are routinely replaced, antibiotics in food and the water supply can destroy them in the colon, increasing the likelihood of calcium oxalate stones. Reduce the likelihood of ever having painful stones by regularly taking a good bacteria product for your colon!

The only healthy-bacteria product I have found to absorb easily and correctly is called Re:Balance, which can be ordered here. (Contains 84 vegetable capsules $35.00.)

Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is a hormone that spurs the thyroid into action. It accelerates thyroid function. The most important thing to realize about TSH is that it isn’t made by the thyroid and is therefore not a thyroid hormone. It is made by the pituitary gland in the brain, so it is a pituitary hormone.

The pituitary tells the thyroid how much work to do; it is the boss over the thyroid. If the level of thyroid hormone in the bloodstream is too low, the pituitary puts out more of its TSH to drive the thyroid into higher hormone production. If the level of thyroid hormone in the bloodstream is too high, the pituitary puts out less of its TSH so that the thyroid puts out less thyroid hormone.

People think that if the TSH is high that their thyroid function is high, but the opposite is true. Again, TSH is not a thyroid hormone. It is a hormone made by the pituitary to stimulate thyroid production and it is therefore an indicator of the level of thyroid production.

On a blood test, the TSH should be within a certain range. If the TSH is too low, that is usually because there is too high a level of thyroid hormones, produced by the thyroid itself, already in the bloodstream. In that case, the thyroid is considered to be “hyper” in function. If the TSH is too high, that is usually because there is too low a level of thyroid hormones in the bloodstream. In that case, the thyroid is considered to be “hypo” in function. Alternative doctors try to get the TSH level below 2.

Best of hormone levels to you!

70-95% of the volume of what you juice should probably include at least 3 of these 5 items for the juice to have a palatable taste: celery, cucumbers, fennel bulb (not more than 1), peeled broccoli stems, spinach.

10% or more of what you juice could include some item from these highly beneficial, but more bitter-tasting vegetables, to increase the variety of nutrients: asparagus, basil, beet leaves (not the beet root), broccoli tops, cabbage, cauliflower, chives, cilantro, collard greens, dandelion greens, dark green leafy vegetables, garlic, horseradish, kale, mint, parsley, radishes, scallions, Swiss chard, watercress. With the large leafy greens, cut out and discard the stems as they are bitter.

5% or less of these higher-starch items should be added for flavor. To 2 cups of the above “basic juice”, you can add 1 medium-sized carrot or 1 small beet root. My favorite is ½ lime with 1/3 green apple and 1/2 fennel bulb for a licorice flavor.

Optional: fresh raw ginger root. Start with a small amount (a piece the size of a small olive for 2 cups of juice) and gradually increase. Ginger adds a spicy flavor to the juice. It improves digestion and helps dissolve stones in the body.

Increase your intake of this juice gradually, as it can detoxify your body. Begin with 1/2 cup a day and build up to 4 cups per day if you can. This juice can have tremendous health benefits, including increased energy, reduced cholesterol, weight regulation, etc.

When there are skin issues, it is helpful to reduce the stress on skin by keeping the products used on it pure. This applies to anything put on the skin — lotions, creams, makeup, and even skin-therapy products.

How do skin products get germs in them? Anything that contacts troubled skin and then touches the products afterward, contaminates the product. When someone dabs cream on their skin with a finger or brush and then touches the product to get more, that spreads germs from the skin into the container. It can be difficult to heal the skin after that, as the products may continually reinfect the skin.

I have seen resistant acne clear up nicely once the following steps were done.

Suggestions:

If you have any skin problems at all, throw out your skin products as they are likely to be already contaminated. Start over with new fresh products.

If possible, put skin products on at home, where you can have better control over them.

Buy many brushes or applicators to put products on your skin.

Buy an inexpensive Vodka alcohol at Costco to use as a disinfectant for brushes, etc. Read in the Propyl Alcohol health tip why you should not use propyl alcohol. Keep a glass with an inch of the Vodka alcohol in your bathroom to use.

Wash your hands before touching your skin. Only touch your skin products with clean hands.

Put a dab of the product on the palm of one of your hands or a paper towel. Use different fingers or a brush to draw up the product from your hand or towel to put on your skin. Think of yourself as a painter who squeezes paint from a tube onto a palette and then picks up the paint with a brush. The paint tube itself is not touched with a brush.

When you are done with each product, wash your hands or clean the cosmetic brush by swishing it around in the alcohol, then letting it dry on a paper towel. Do not let it soak for more than a minute or so, as that could dry out the brush. Thick brushes may take more than a day to dry, which is why you want to own more than one of each kind.

Do not keep cosmetic brushes loose in a purse or cosmetic bag, as they collect dirt that would end up on your skin. You could put a new paper towel in your cosmetic bag to securely wrap your brushes in after being used. This reduces the contamination of your bag. When you get home, the paper towel has to get changed and the brushes cleaned in alcohol.

Do not ever use someone else’s makeup or products. Bring your own products if they are needed for any event.
