Has about 13,000 marine animal species, among them the gray whale, which comes each year to produce offspring.

Estero del San Jose del Cabo – A protected area in the heart of San Jose del Cabo which is 992 kilometers (615 miles) south of Guerrero Negro along the Transpeninsular Highway.

This tropical sanctuary is home to more than 150 bird species.

This marvelous estuary, a fresh- and salt-water lagoon, is home to the Frigatebird and the brown pelican.

Bahia Magdalena – Located on the western coast of Baja California Sur and north of Almejas Bay. You can arrive there by departing from Puerto San Carlos or Puerto Adofo Lopez Mateos. It is a nature reserve and breeding ground for gray whales, which arrive there between January and March to produce offspring. Has strong surf and is 60 kilometers (37 miles) long. It is often referred to as the gateway to the Pacific.

Considered one of the most important breeding grounds for the gray whale. It is estimated that 20,000 of these whales migrate to the Mexican coast each year.

Marina de Cabo San Lucas – Located in the heart of Cabo San Lucas on Lot A-18 De la Darsena. It Has excellent boating facilities and service areas. You can arrive at the marina in your own boat or in a water taxi from El Medano Beach.
An ideal place for ecotourism, particularly during winter months when you can spy the gray, blue, humpback and sperm whales. Curiously, the grey whale may appear grey, but it is actually black. They appear so because they are covered with barnacles, whale lice and have much scar tissue.

Roca del Pelicano. A 20-minute boat ride from Cabo San Lucas, Pelican Rock overlooks the waters where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. The deep waters near the natural monument, are full of tropical fish which inhabit the impressive coral reefs, offer excellent scuba diving.

Punta Gorda. Lies 5 kilometers (3 miles) from San Jose del Cabo, in front of Punta Palmilla. It is a nearly uninhabited beach with strong surf, so be careful if you wish to take a swim. There you can do some scuba diving and observe a wide variety of fish species as they swim around in a habitat with beautiful white sand and countless rock formations that take new shapes as time moves on.

Bus lines operating out of the city terminal are Autotransportes de Baja California ABC, Autotransportes El Aguila and Enlaces Terrestres Peninsulares ETP.

You can also arrive to the peninsula by boat from Mazatlan and Topolobampo, Sinaloa. The boats arrive at the port of Pichilingue, which is 18 kilometers (11 miles) north of La Paz and 186 kilometers (115 miles) north of Los Cabos. From there, you can take Highway 1 or 19 to Los Cabos.

We’ve been brain washed a little, in recent years, into believing that idyllic holidays have to be far flung. The literature, the posters, the adverts all point to faraway destinations covered in waving palm fronds. Sun, they seem to suggest, is only available when one spends a fortune travelling halfway around the world. Anyone who has ever been on Greek islands holidays already knows the lunacy of that suggestion for the rest of us, then, here’s a little run down of an idyll much closer to home.

The Greek islands have everything – including, at the moment, a rather wonderful habit of offering spectacular holidays at extremely reasonable prices. Sun, sand, sea, culture, ancient temples, glorious plant and wild life: everything that made the Aegean islands the cradle of romanticism, the place Shelley and Byron and all the great Romantic writers wanted to be in is still there in spades. Wonderful food, balmy nights, hot days (but not, unlike the tropics, swelteringly horrible and sticky) – there is nothing the heart desires that cannot be had in Greece and its surrounding islands.

Greek islands holidays can be done in one of two equally outstanding ways. One can either charter a yacht (this isn’t as expensive as its sounds) or hire a villa – or, if one wishes, one can combine the two, hiring a villa with access to a chartered and crewed yacht. All yacht charters are available either as bare boats (i.e. self crewed) or as crewed: if one wishes to hire a yacht bare one may well be asked to provide some proof of seamanship – a recognised license or qualification. To be honest, unless one is a seasoned sailor, the idea of Greek islands holidays on a bare boat is practically insane – why go to all that trouble when a whole professional crew is waiting to sail you around wherever you want to go, whenever you want to go there? Not forgetting, of course, that if someone else is in charge of the yacht then one is free to share a couple of bottles of retsina with one’s companion or, indeed, companions.

Villa hire is just as wonderful (which leads one to suppose that the ideal Greek island holiday would be to hire a villa with access to a yacht). Living for a couple of weeks in a Greek island villa allows one to step slowly back in time, wandering through explosions of fragrant plants in a genuine Mediterranean garden, relaxing for hours in a hammock under a cypress tree. Greek islands holidays, when they have a villa thrown in for good measure, are a positive study in the kind of indulgence tropical holidays often offer but so rarely deliver.

And all so close to home, too! With a Greek island holiday one can forget about 12 hour flights, interminable layovers and crushing jet lag. A couple of hours and one is there, in the bright blue Aegean Sea, ready to start the sensory adventure of a lifetime. Next time one of those posters for faraway lands crops up in your field of vision, stop and think for a minute. Wouldn’t it be better to take Greek islands holidays?

Between 1717–1718 he terrorised the eastern coast of the American colonies and the West Indies as the notorious pirate Blackbeard. Teach was killed during a ferocious battle at sea on 22 November 1718.

Although born in Pembrokeshire in Wales, Bartholomew Roberts, another famous pirate sailed from Bristol on merchant ships. Better known as Black Bart, he was perhaps the most successful pirate during the Golden Age of Piracy (1650-1722). He is said to have plundered more than 470 ships in four years. He is quoted as having said, “A merry life and a short one shall be my motto.” And it was – he was only 40 years old when he died on the 10th of Feb. 1722.

The Floating Harbour
This year Bristol celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Floating Harbour. Two hundred years ago, to improve the port facilities, lock gates were installed on a tidal stretch of the River Avon thereby providing a tidal by-pass for the river in the centre of the city.

The next Bristol International Balloon Fiesta will happen from the 12-15 of August 2010.
Don Cameron, of Cameron Balloons, created the first Bristol International Balloon Fiesta in 1979. The Balloon Fiesta is now a global hot air balloon event drawing balloonists and balloon lovers from all over the world. Last year there were over 130 balloons and half a million people showed up to watch and enjoy the balloons, the arena and aerial entertainment as well as all the stalls selling all sorts of things.

During the Fiesta, at 6 am and 6 pm when the balloons are launched en masse, the skies over Bristol come alive with colour. As one lady said of the event, “...seeing over 110 hot air balloons flying over Bristol in the early mornings and evenings, causes the commuter traffic to come to a standstill”.

Is there anything more luxurious than taking a cruise holiday? Travelling to exotic locations on a luxury ship, catching some sun and breathing in the sea breezes, can renew and revitalise anyone, no matter how weary you are from working.

Cruise travel is much more than just a way to get from one location to the next. It used to be that the only reason to get on board a ship, was to get from one destination to another. Today they are much more than just a means of transport. They offer much more than that.

I have been on the Superstar Gemini. It was one of the best holidays that I have had. Once on the ship, you unpack and that is it until you return. You travel from country to country, with no worries about passports etc. It is very relaxing.

Yosemite National Park, one of the first wilderness parks in the United States, is best known for its waterfalls, but within its nearly 1,200 square miles, you can find deep valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoias, a vast wilderness area, and much more.
Yosemite National Park covers nearly 1,200 square miles of mountainous terrain in the Sierra Nevada of California.
You can visit Yosemite all year, though some areas of the park are inaccessible by car from approximately November through May due to snow. You can drive your car into and around Yosemite, though we encourage you to use shuttle buses in some areas.

Barrancas del Cobre (The Copper Canyon)

The majestic Copper Canyon, a nature park in the state of Chihuahua, spans more than 600 km (372 mi) in length and 250 km (155 mi) in width. Due to the various types of terrain, you’ll experience extreme climates, with cold winds in the high areas and hot weather at the bottom of the canyons, where it can reach up to 40º C (104º F) during the summer.
This enormous canyon system is deeper than the Grand Canyon at certain points; the average depth is between 1520 to 1879 meters (5,017 to 6,200 feet). Among some of the major canyons are the Urique, Sinforosa, Batopilas, Candameña, Huapoca and Septentrion, to mention just a few. The impressive natural environment is the habitat of a countless number of plant and animal species.

One of the best ways to see the Copper Canyon’s natural wonders is by train. The Chihuahua-Pacifico train, also known as Chepe, makes several stops along the way.

Not only does the park offer spectacular natural beauty, but it also allows you to enjoy ecotourism outings and adventure sports. In fact, it hosts the Festival de Turismo de Aventura (Festival of Adventure Tourism), which draws hundreds of visitors from all over the world each year. WHITEWATER RAFTING

In the Parque Nacional Barrancas del Cobre you’ll find several rivers where you can go rafting, particularly during the rainy season from June to September, when the rivers swell and the rapids become much more challenging.

Rio Papigochi. Located in the northern part of the Parque Nacional Barrancas del Cobre, about 50 km (31 mi) west of Madera. This river runs through the Huapoca region, along the bottom of the Huapoca Canyon. The class III rapids are ideal for whitewater rafting.

El Rio Urique. Located in the central region of the Parque Nacional Barrancas del Cobre, in the town of Urique. This river, which runs along the bottom of the Copper Canyon, is navigable year-round; it has class III and IV rapids.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

The Copper Canyon has many routes for hiking and horseback riding. The large canyons are also ideal for rappelling and climbing. If you’d like to do these activities, we recommend that you hire a professional guide.

Peña del Gigante – Located in the northwestern part of the Parque Natural Barrancas del Cobre, in the Candameña Canyon, within the Parque Nacional Cascada de Basaseachi. This impressive steep has an 884-meter (2,917-foot) vertical cliff. The five routes have 5.12 and 5.13 grades of difficulty, making them ideal for rappelling and climbing.

Rancho San Lorenzo – Located in the northwestern part of the Parque Natural Barrancas del Cobre, in the heart of the Sierra Tarahumara, within the Parque Nacional Cascada de Basaseachi. This is a great spot for rock climbing, as it has 54 routes with varying difficulty levels, ranging from 5.8 to 5.13. In addition, this place offers lodging, food service and guided tours.

Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende

The grandest of Mexico’s silver mining towns, Guanajuato has often been likened to the city of Toledo in Spain. The town winds around a hillside dotted with flower gardens and lively side streets with a maze of corkscrew lanes that turn into plazas, hidden alleys and stairways. According to the legend of the Street of the Kiss, Guanajuato’s alleys are so narrow, lovers can lean from their balconies to embrace. The opulence of its churches attests to the riches of the mine owners who built them.

La Valenciana church, for example, constructed in 1788, is said to
have been built with mortar fused with wine and silver.

The Union Garden is the elegant main plaza, ringed by cozy outdoor cafes, which add to the town’s quaint and romantic atmosphere.

Other attractions include the downtown crafts market; the Mercado Hidalgo, a 1910 cast-iron-and-glass building designed by Gustave Eiffel; the Alhondiga de Granaditas museum, which
outlines the importance it played in the War of Independence; the Mineralogy Museum; and the Hacienda of San Miguel de Barrera, filled with impressive furnishings and art collections.

San Miguel de Allende, about an hour away by road, is another beautifulmountain city famous as an artists’ and writers’ colony, with a large population of retired U.S. and Canadians residents.
Founded in 1542, it’s also a well-preserved colonial mining town with a famous Gothic Revival church called La Parroquia, designed by the self-taught native Ceferino Gutierrez in the late 19th century.

The cobblestone streets lead to the animated town square, lovely colonial mansions, cafes, restaurants, and shops with outstanding tin handicrafts.

Events like the annual chamber music and jazz festivals, plus art shows and local fairs, have made it a cultural hub of the region.

Days 1 & 2 Queretaro (World Heritage Site)

Queretaro (airports: BJX and QRO) is one of the most prosperous and modern cities in Mexico.
The Centro Historico, a World Heritage Site, is filled with beautiful
examples of baroque architecture in soft-colored cantera stone, including Santa Cruz church and convent, and the churches of San Felipe and Santa Rosa de Viterbo.

Aguascalientes is also home to an important regional wine industry, with visits and tastings possible.

Days 5 & 6 Zacatecas (World Heritage Site)

Zacatecas (airport: ZCL), built mostly of pink cantera stone, is perhaps the most beautiful colonial city of Mexico. Silver mines fueled the building of Zacatecas’ ornately carved cathedral, the Palacio de Gobierno (Governor’s Mansion) and many other churches and public buildings.
The city was built on very steep terrain. Take the Funicular 82 m/270 ft to the top of the Cerro de la Bufa, for an exciting perspective of Zacatecas.
