Seaming

Seaming too, is a necessary part of the finishing process. There are three popular methods of seaming: woven seams, sewn seams, and crocheted seams. In all three methods, the finished projects to be joined must be matched carefully and the seaming done with the same yarn as that with which the finished projects were worked.

Woven seams are worked with a blunt-ended tapestry needle on the right side of the finished project. The needle is inserted through the first stitch on one edge, draw through two strands along the edge, and then worked through two strands on the opposite side edge.

A sewn seam is also worked with a blunt-ended tapestry needle. You can start by threading up a tail left at the beginning or end of a finished project, and join in new lengths as required: With wrong sides upward, lay the two edges side-by-side on a flat surface. Pass the needle under one thread of the right edge, then under corresponding thread of the left edge, and pull through. Then pass the needle from left to right under the next pair of corresponding threads in the same way. The stitches form a zigzag from side to side. Make sure all the pieces match exactly.

A crocheted seam is worked with a fine crochet hook on the wrong side of the project (sometimes on the right side for design effect especially if worked in a contrasting color) with either a single crochet or a slip stitch, working together through the thickness of the stitches on each side of each of the edges to be joined.
A simple single crochet edging may be worked all around a flat project of crochet for a neat finish. Further rows or rounds of single crochet or other stitches may be added as desired.

Running tails: Use a tapestry needle to run in any remaining yarn tails on the wrong side of the work, where they will not show. You may run the needle in and out, either along a seam, or through the backs of the crochet stitches for at least 2”. Break off

Work two projects at a time

As a crochet lover, I usually work on a multiple projects at any given time; afghan, blouse, girls summer dress, accessories or a gift for my relatives and friends. For one thing, it’s preventing me from getting bored on one pattern, especially for that big project.

My husband lived with a strange bag full of yarn everywhere, all over the house.

And while I am working on my crocheting project, I am fantasizing about the pattern in my mind for my daughter, or that popular actress wearing crochet top that I saw over the internet or projects that will get done someday, maybe.

Crocheting is so generous with time and talent. Crocheting more than one project makes us more creative. For example, when I was working on one project, there maybe some stitches that may fill for the next row in another project. You’ll learn how to make a pattern in no time. And finally, working on two projects makes me a faster crocheter too.

* (asterisk) or † (dagger) … repeat the instructions following the asterisk or dagger as many times as specified.

** or †† … used for a second set of repeats within one set of instructions.

( ) parenthesis… repeat the instructions in parenthesis as many times as specified. For example: “(ch5, sc in next sc) 5 times” means to work all that is in parenthesis 5 times.

: (colon)…. The number of stitches after a colon tells you the number of stitches you will have when you have completed the row or round.

I usually uploaded a picture of all of my crochet project to my facebook account. There are some people that I don’t know(they just seen my picture by tagging our common friends in my photos), asking if I sell that crochet project. Some asked where they can get the pattern I made, and some are just curious how I learned; as we all know there are only few people can crochet.

I learned basic crochet stitches when I was in my 5th grade. I just learned the basic stitches and crochet abbreviations, and that’s it. From there, I love looking for a crochet project. My grandmother ( my mother’s godmother in her wedding) have a lot of crochet projects. In their house, there was a set of table cloth, center table, corner table and coffee table crochet projects. I love looking at her creations. At my young age, I started to look at her if I will go to my old age, I want to make like those crochet and add a decoration around in my house. In the afternoon, she was crocheting at the library room, there I just watch her, occasionally, holding the thread while she’s crocheting. I just sat beside her and watch her while she’s crocheting.

When I get to high school, we have a “home economics” class. There we learned works within the house. I learned basic baking, cross stitch, different type of stitches, and crocheting. In this stage of my learning of crocheting, I learned how to read a pattern. I remember one time that my crochet teacher encourage me to join in a crochet competition in the school, guess what, I won gold medal. Then I join again in a crochet competition in other school, representing my school. Well, at this time I bring silver medal home. At this time, I just love crocheting anything at home. I remember, at this age I usually stayed at home and crochet. Just crochet, crochet, crochet. Some of my works are not nice… I just told my mother that I just practicing my crocheting talent.

After 10 years, I started to hook-up again in crocheting. At this time I started to buy a book, but crochet books was so expensive, so I try to look over the internet for free crochet pattern. From there, I learned and learned thru reading books and thru surfing the net about crocheting. Sometimes I found a nice site but I forgot to list down the url of free crochet pattern. I started to surf again hoping to look for a nice site that have a free pattern. That’s the reason why this blog was created, this is for those crochet lover like me, have a problem looking for a free pattern on the net. There are also some helpful tips in this blog that you might want to read.

I eventually learned to make my own patterns and you can see this in some of the patterns I have posted here. ENJOY!

Blocking

The final finish to any crochet and to give it a professional look, we should wash and block it. Blocking is necessary in almost all needlecraft projects and may be done either before or after the projects is assembled.

Use a neutral soap and cool water. Squeeze the suds through the crochet, but do not rub; rinse thoroughly. Drain away the water and roll the crochet in a towel to blot away excess moisture. If desired starch the crochet lightly. Using rustproof pins, pin the crochet right side up on a well-padded surface. Pin around the edges at regular interval.

When the crochet is dry, lay the project flat, cover it with a damp cloth, and press it lightly with an iron, allowing steam to form and keeping the iron moving over the project. Do not let the iron to rest on the stitches.

Most crochet projects made with synthetic yarns will have resiliency to them, so that they will remain close to the size to which they were made, wool project, however, and even some cotton can be stretched slightly if desired while the garment is still damp.

Gauge

This is the most important aspect of crocheting!

Gauge is the key word that spells out final success or failure of any knitted or crocheted projects; it means the number of stitches and rows you are working to an inch.

For best results, you should have the same number of stitches and rows as indicated in the instructions. Before beginning a project, make a small sample of the stitch, working with the suggested hook size and desired thread. If your work is too tight, use a larger hook; if it is too loose, use a smaller hook.

The little extra time you devote to testing your “hand” before starting your actual piece of work will be very well worth the effort you made.
