Update: Life is still an adventure. (Surprise!)

First off, I have NOT forgotten about you!! Things have been on a total roller coaster, and I want off. o_O

Can you tell that life is kind of making me grumpy. *^_^*

Anywho, the place I had my heart set on fell through, so we spent more time looking at various properties. Finally, we’ve found another one that looks good!

We had to.. redefine our expectations, which was tough. But then again, I always say that life never goes the way you expect it to anyway. ^_^

I feel like makin’ you jealous, so here’s a pic of the house!

You may now drool.

The original plan was to have a separate dwelling for my in-laws, but the basement is practically a second home in itself. (It has three bedrooms and TWO full bathrooms!!) So once we add a kitchen, they’ll live in the basement and we’ll be upstairs.

Our offer was accepted so now we get to go through the fun of inspections, appraisal, getting the loan processed, and THEN moving. I’m already tired, to be honest. But it’ll be worth it once it’s done!

Come on! Just look at that kitchen!!

And um, I have to confess something to you. I’ve been writing in other blogs. Two blogs, actually. *^_^*

Blogging on a Budget is a blog that I registered ages ago, and I finally wrote the first post for it. Everything about it is still kinda rough, but if you’re curious, the first post is about picking a blog host.

Mira’s Faves is another blog idea that I’ve had kicking around for a while, and I finally decided to go ahead and get it started. It’s just about my favorite products, and why I like them. ^_^ So far there are four posts, and I cover Kapoosh Knife Blocks, Burt’s Bees Coconut Foot Creme, SodaStream, and World’s Best Cat Litter. These are all things that I use and love!

I have a few other products in mind that I want to review, but I figured that four posts was enough to make the blog look nice. It’ll be updated whenever I have extra time.

But here! Oh my word there are SO many things I need to do for you guys! You can probably tell that Points4Prizes is currently on hold, but after looking at layouts for Mira’s Faves… I think that I want to work on a cleaner layout for here. ^_^ I really like the color scheme though, so this may take some time to find just the right template. Or I might just dig around until it looks right. We’ll see!

Anywho! Gamesville has totally revamped their Frantic Fish game, and I’m dying to make a guide for it! And Candystand now has million dollar sweeps and a daily scratchcard!! OMG!! Everyone is so busy and there’s so much I want to tell you!

But for now, I’m really sorry, but you’ll have to do with this briefish update. :( I’m not sure when I’ll get to do an actual game guide, but I hope it’s soon! *Super hugs*

Life is an Adventure

If you follow me on Twitter, than you already know that this past week my family went to look at a potential place to move. I was so excited that I couldn’t concentrate on writing or getting anything useful done. *^_^*

It’s a fantastic deal, and I’m 99% sure that we’ll move there. Here’s a pic of the view from the back porch!

Isn’t it gorgeous?! The building itself is a double wide which needs some work, which we expected.

So basically, it looks like we’ll be moving soonish. After renovations are done I’ll tackle the wild to make a small garden, and maybe get some chickens. ^_^ Sometime in the middle of that I hope to find a local job to ease the financial strain.

All in all, things will be quite busy for a while. What does this mean for Free2WinGames? Well… I’m going to put it on hold. Realistically, the additional work and stress isn’t worth the $5 (or less) I make each week here. I’ll keep Points4Prizes running, since that’s pretty easy to update and check. ^_^ But don’t expect any new posts for a few months.

I’ll still respond to comments and emails, and I’ll stay active on Twitter and Facebook, so it isn’t like I’m vanishing. ^_^ It’ll just be a little quieter for a while.

News: Candystand adds a daily sweeps wheel!

I love daily stuff, and I love spinning wheels, so this is PERFECT for me!

No, not THAT kind of wheel. (Although it is quite pretty!)

To spin the wheel just log onto Candystand! Right now there’s a big picture of it on the front page and a link in the top corner.

Ooooh! I wanna win!!!

You get 1 spin every day, and your prize may range anywhere from 50 tickets to $500!!!! There are also several gift certificates, which is pretty nice!

So far I’ve won 1,000 tickets a few times, which isn’t too shabby. ^_^

Candystand has also done something a little different here. When you open the prize wheel you’ll see a clear link to the sweepstakes rules and facts. Most of the time that stuff is hidden, and I REALLY like that they’re being up front about your odds and the prizes. Take a look!

Being open about odds is quite refreshing. ^_^ I approve!

Open Discussion: What subject should be added to high school curriculums?

Our schools could use several subjects in the curriculum, such as, oh cooking classes! ^_^ I was lucky enough to be in a school where such a class was offered, and wow… It’s incredibly useful! (Everybody eats, ya know.)

However, if I could pick only one subject to add, that would be self-defense.

A good self-defense class teaches you more than fighting. It teaches you how to handle less-than-ideal situations, like getting a flat tire on the highway. It also teaches you to be aware of your surroundings and what to look for.

This is another class I was blessed to take, but it was in my junior year of college. We only spent 2 weeks on “combat,” and the rest was on boosting self confidence and learning the other things I mentioned. ^_^ In one class we took time to just yell. Why? Because most of the students (myself included) had never yelled before.

It was the best class I took in both my high school & college career. My only regret is that I didn’t take it sooner. And I REALLY wish it was available to high school students. It’s easy to teach kids to be afraid of the world. It takes more time and effort to teach them how to take control of their lives. But I think it’s worth it. ^_^

Summary

For 134 years, American Humane Association’s Red Star Animal Emergency Services™ have responded to national and international needs for animal disaster relief. Immediately following the natural disasters in Japan on March 11, the Red Star team reached out to international partners to form a global coalition to help animal victims of the tragedy. The team set up a Japan Relief Fund, with 100 percent of donations going directly to help animals in Japan.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

On March 11, an 8.9 magnitude earthquake hit Japan, followed by a deadly tsunami and ongoing nuclear emergencies. In addition to the thousands of humans killed and displaced by this tragedy, countless animals also became victims. When disaster strikes and evacuations take place, animals are often injured, lost or forgotten. With a reported 690,000 people evacuated or displaced from their homes, it is possible that up to a quarter of a million pets may require rescue and emergency sheltering.

How will this project solve this problem?

Already, American Humane Association’s Japan Relief Fund has contributed $10,000 and shipped a load of critically needed animal sheltering supplies to support local animal relief efforts in Japan. These funds went to the Japan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (JSPCA) and the Japan Animal Welfare Society (JAWS) — two local organizations that are providing shelter to animal victims of the disaster.

Potential Long Term Impact

The Red Star team continues to work with national and international partners to finalize plans for animal relief support in Japan. Through these ongoing efforts, the animal victims in Japan will receive the food, sheltering, medical treatment and care that they need until they are reunited with their families. With 59 percent of Japan’s population owning dogs and 31 percent owning cats, the scale and longevity of the impact of this relief work is huge.

As you can see, this project is pretty new and they’re still quite a ways from their goal. Let’s see if we can help them with that! Here’s an idea of what your donation can do.

$25 – Decontaminates 10 animals pulled from the toxic flood waters.
$50 – Purchases 2 microchip scanners to reunite families with their pets.
$75 – Purchases 2 medium transport animal crates to get animals to safety.
$225 – Enables one volunteer to care for 12 horses with food & water.
$800 – Provides an animal rescue boat to pull animals from the flood waters.

Flexicon – Flex that grey matter!

Flexicon is a crossword puzzle that you can play at Club Bing. As with all crossword puzzles, you have a blank grid to fill in with words. Words go across and down, but not diagonally!

Of course, you aren’t just guessing on what goes where. You get a clue for each and every word. ^_^

How nice.

Well, it’s more like a crossword puzzle that’s broken into four pieces. Each piece connects to one long word called the Flexicon.

The picture below is all from the same puzzle, but it’s the different sections so you can (hopefully) see how they fit together.

You can flip between the sections whenever you want, so if you get stuck on one bit just move to the next. There’s no penalty!

If a clue is too vague for you, move your cursor over the clue. A little green bar will pop up asking if you want to Get a Hint or Give Up. (Tip: Don’t give up!!! You can’t earn any more tickets if you give up!) Selecting the hint will run a specific search in the bing engine below.

Oooooh!

Yup, as with all games on Club Bing, the bing search engine is always attached to the game. ^_^ Sometimes the hints are helpful, but other times… not-so-much. If that’s the case, use the search engine to see what you can find on your own!

Some puzzles are easier than others, and clues are repeated. This just means that you’ll get faster with them over time, which is great! A finished puzzle can award up to 25 tickets, which is pretty darn good for a Club Bing game.

See! Proof!!

Oh! The one semi-annoying thing is that you have to confirm each word after you put it into the puzzle. If it’s wrong you’ll see a lovely red X. No red X means that Yay!! You got it! ^_^

Final Rating

Usually crossword puzzles intimidate me, but I really like how Flexicon breaks up one big puzzle into the four smaller sections. Taking things one chunk at a time makes it a LOT less scary. ^_^

I rate this 4 stars out of 5. It’s solid entertainment with enough of a challenge to keep me going back for more. Woot!

I was scrolling through the pictures at Thought Questions, and my brain had an instant answer for this one. ^_^ Apparently, the single word that best sums up my life so far, is….

Unexpected.

Life is full of surprises, and I know that when I was a teen, I NEVER would have imagined where I’d be now. Most of it’s good, some of it’s bad, but a huge friggen’ chunk of my life is just completely unexpected. I kinda like that. ^_^

Off topic: I got my red wiggler worms today!! Hubs already built the vermicomposter (aka, worm bin) a few days ago, so tonight we got the bedding (shredded cardboard & newspaper) together and made the worms all comfy. ^_^ Their first meal is some left over corn and a few diced tomatoes. I’m so excited!!!!

The Gamesville team has been hinting for some time about a new way to earn prizes, using GVs. Well, they’ve finally released some more info about it! And we have one teaser picture to work with. ^_^

If you can’t see the pic, here’s what the text says.

Gamesville.com awards more cash prizes to more people than any website on the planet. And unlike other game sites – where some people win prizes but most don’t – every eligible player at Gamesville can win prizes. See, it’s not a matter of “if” you’ll win a prize at Gamesville; it’s only a matter of “when”!

Below that is a table that looks something like this:

Having a limited number of prizes is interesting, but I wonder how they’re going to do it. If there’s only one $100 prize a month, when does it restock? If it’s at the start of the month, there’s going to be a mad rush and I imagine a lot of people will fuss about it restocking at a time when they’re asleep, or at work.

A random restock would be more fair (and fun), but could frustrate those who *really* just want one prize. Would you want to check numerous times a day for a month, only to find out that it restocked and you missed it?

So yeah, I’m really curious about how they’re going to handle restocks. ^_^ They hope to release it sometime in April, so start saving your GVs!!

News: Pogo pitches in to support Japan.

Pogo is doing two things to help Japan. One of them is great, the other is kinda… pointless. You’ll see. ^_^

The Great: Pogo, along with EA & The Sims, will donate up to $50,000 to the American Red Cross. It’s one of those deals where they match what you donate, which is always really neat.

You do not have to be a Pogo member to get in on this! Click on the American Red Cross link above and donate away!

Now, the second thing that they’re doing is offering free items for minis to show support for Japan. I took a look at the items and they’re t-shirts.

Lookie me! I’m socially aware!

Aaaaaaand I totally don’t get the point of them. It’s on par with changing your Facebook avatar to a cartoon to take a stand against pedophilia. (Yes, that was a real thing that went around Facebook. Useless? Uh-huh.)

I think it would be REALLY cool if they made items that you could only get by donating. But maybe their system isn’t set up for that. *Shrugs*

What do you think of companies that match donations? Is it generous, or just clever marketing scheme? How about the “support” items? ^_^

I’ve wanted to introduce charity donations for a while, and thanks to a tip from @corosnark, I finally figured out how!

We’re going to use GlobalGiving.org. ^_^ It’s a site with over 1,000 pre-screened grassroots projects from around the world. A project might be about funding books for a school, providing food for a village, or surgery for abuse victims.

There is a ton of information on their How GlobalGiving Works and FAQ pages, and I’m satisfied that this is a safe and fun way to help others. Woohoo!!

Now if you couldn’t guess by the title, I really want to incorporate this with Points4Prizes, both as a way to earn points and a way to spend points. Here’s the plan!

How to Earn Points With GlobalGiving

Each month when I list the new Points4Prizes bonuses I’ll include info on a specific project. If you’re not part of P4P but you want to support the cause anyway, please donate directly to the project! (I’ll include links for that.)

If you’re a P4P member and would like to earn points from your donation, send a GlobalGiving e-giftcard to:

and I’ll donate the giftcard to the project. An e-giftcard is solid proof that you donated, without the hassle of sharing PayPal info with me or trying to take screenshots. In other words, this is the easiest solution that I could find!

GlobalGiving requires a minimum donation of $10, but you can donate as much as you want! In return you’ll earn 3,000 P4P points. (You can earn this bonus only once a month.)

PLEASE be sure to put your Disqus name in the “From” section so I know who gets the reward points! And yes, this means that you can donate on behalf of another P4P member too. ^_^

Why The Points Are Different

You might be wondering why you can only earn 3,000 points for donating $10+, but buying a $10 donation giftcard costs 10,000 points!

Well, here’s why. ^_^

I know not everyone has time to dig through posts and comment, or tackle the Weekly Challenge and fight to reach the high scores table. Sometimes life is incredibly hectic, and I understand that. So I wanted to have an option where people could do something good for humanity and be able to earn some reward points.

However, I don’t want this to turn into a system where people “buy” points and then grab all of the prizes! That isn’t fair to those who work hard for their points through “regular” methods, and it isn’t fair to the sponsors. That’s why I’m limiting it to 3k points a month from donations. It lets people get involved, even if they don’t have a lot of time to spare, but it doesn’t devalue the work that others have to do!

As for the P4P prize table, the entire point of having GlobalGiving giftcards available is so that people who can’t spare $10 still have the option to donate. They can turn in virtual points for a cash donation that will help someone else have a better life. I know I’m biased, but I think that’s kinda cool. ^_^

Of course, you’re welcome to trade in your points however you wish! I just wanted to have the option there, ya know?

I plan on keeping a running total of ALL donations, both from cash donations and giftcards purchased with points. This total will be published on both the monthly prize table and the new bonuses, cuz I’m darn proud of you all. ^_^ Some of the projects may send updates on what they’re doing with the funds, and I’ll share those too!

For now, here’s a project that I *hope* might reach their target before the end of March. If they don’t then I’ll post it again for April. [TW for rape.]

Restore Health And Dignity of 150 Congolese Women

Summary

The project provides survivors of rape and gender violence in the eastern DRC (Democratic Republic of the Congo) with comprehensive services that help women find safety and start to heal their bodies, souls and minds.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Rape is one of the most powerful weapons deployed in the prolonged conflict in the eastern DRC. It not only damages bodies but also tears apart lives and communities. For women and girls who survive, medical assistance is critical but rarely sufficient. Long-term recovery also requires a safe space where women start to heal their bodies, minds and souls. HEAL Africa, which has provided care for 15,000 women and girls since 1996, provides comprehensive services to survivors of gender violence.

How will this project solve this problem?

With 300 counselors, HEAL Africa runs 28 community houses (Wamama Simameni, or Women Stand Up Together) in North Kivu and Maniema where survivors go after surgery for food, shelter, psychosocial support, economic assistance and cultural activities.

Potential Long Term Impact

Guided by artists and facilitators, women learn to externalize their pain and speak freely with peers about the social problems they face. They also discuss women’s rights and their role in the peace process, gaining tools to build social stability.

News: Playtopia seeking admins. Also, their Jigsaw Puzzle and Picture Logic games get a boost.

Playtopia has really been busy this month! First off, they are looking for volunteer admins to help with the site. Admins will work from home and help players with any questions they have, in addition to enforcing the peace for all. If this sounds like the job for you, you can apply here!

I really like Playtopia and I wish that I had more time to spend on their site. Or maybe I just have a soft spot for underdogs. *^_^*

They also have added 10 new pictures to their Jigsaw Puzzle game, and two new food themed books to Picture Logic.

I’ve tried both games, and Jigsaw Puzzle isn’t very good, to be honest. However, Picture Logic is AWESOME!!!!! If you enjoy logic puzzles then you absolutely must try this one. ^_^ Seriously.

This week’s Playtopia challenges are:

Drive 3km in Trains, any difficulty level and win 5000 tokens
Get a 12+ streak in Heidi Hunt (it’s a hidden object game) and win 5000 tokens

News: New Slingo chat feature & the Slingo Daily Challenge gets an upgrade!

Slingo has had a rank system for some time now, and they’re really trying to draw more attention to it. One thing that they recently did is add rankings to chat!

It’s in the upper left corner, in the red box.

Now you can see what everyone else’s rank is, which I think is kinda fun. ^_^ And it really makes me want to increase my rank! Right now there isn’t any bonus for achieving any specific rank, but yeah, I dig bragging rights.

Not sure how to increase your rank? Check the rank breakdown for full details, but basically you earn points for making friends, playing games, and entering tournaments. In other words, you increase your rank by being active and getting involved with the community. Not a bad thing!

The Slingo Daily Challenge recently got another powerup, which means I need to go update the guide again. *Facepalm*

The new powerup lets you get extra spins, so you can go beyond the normal 20!! Woot!

Also, they added a leaderboard to show you how you compare with your friends for that day’s challenge.

11th place? Pfft.

I like it, but I kinda miss having the option to chat with other people who are playing. Slingo Daily Challenge has never had that option, but I still would like it.

Word Chain Plus – Because the regular Word Chain just wasn’t enough…

Ladies and gents, we have a new contender in the world of free-to-win games. It’s a site you’ve probably heard of before, but they only recently introduced games to their venue.

And that site would be… SwagBucks!

I had no clue until Charlynda mentioned it! ^_^ So today we’re going to take a look at one of their games: Word Chain Plus!

OooooooOOOOOOOOooooooo…….

In this word puzzle game, you have four letters at all times. Click a letter (any one of them) and then change it to make a new word! For example, in the picture above I could have changed the T into an S to create, “says.” You can use the keyboard on the screen or the keyboard attached to your computer to change the letter.

But your job isn’t done, oh no! Then you pick another letter and change it to create another new word. Keep making new words, one letter at a time, for as long as you can! A chain of words might look something like this. (The changed letter is in bold.)

And so on. Since this game is timed you have to be quick with your choice! You have 1500…. time increments (they’re definitely not seconds) which count down extremely fast. In the first level each time you make a word the timer fills back up to 1500, which is great! In later levels the timer doesn’t fill up quite as much for each word, so the pressure is REALLY on.

The timer also affects your score. Whatever time is left when you make a word, that’s how much the word is worth! So a word made with 1400 left on the clock is worth 1400 points.

But the fun doesn’t end there! Each letter in the word has a dot over it, and whenever you change a letter the dot turns green.

When you turn all four dots green, you activate a multiplier. Each successive time you turn the dots green you add another number to the multiplier. So far my best has been a 12x multiplier! Woohoooooo!!! ^_^

It’s hard to build a big multiplier because you can lose the whole thing very quickly. Here are the rules.

If you select a letter that already has a green dot over it to become the new letter for the new word, that dot will stay green, but any other active green dots will turn back to white. You’ll keep whatever multiplier you’ve currently built up!
If you try to make a word that doesn’t exist then the entire multiplier goes bye-bye. (Proper names and acronyms are not valid words!)
This is the tricky one. You can use each word only once per game. If you try to use it twice, the multiplier disappears and you still have to think of a new word. Gah!!!! >_<

Multipliers are key to getting high scores, but they can be tough to build! Remember, if you get stuck, it’s better to lose your progress on increasing the multiplier than to make an invalid word and lose the entire thing. Shake it off and start again!

Oh, and the longer you keep a game running, the harder it’s going to get. Not just because the pool of available words get smaller, but because Word Chain Plus will start locking the previous letter that you changed.

The lock hops to the most recently changed letter, and it’s amazing how even that makes things so much more challenging!

But no matter what, know that practice really helps. My scores have dramatically improved since I first started playing!

Pfft. Is that the best you can do?

My best score is now around 233k, but I didn’t feel like grabbing another screen shot. Sorry. *^_^*

How to Earn Swag Bucks

Currently you can play for free or enter tournaments. When you play for free, you have a chance of earning Swag Bucks after the game is over and you return to the game page. So far I’ve earned 2 Swag Bucks each time it happened.

For the tournaments you have several options, and all require you to pony up some Swag Bucks at the start.

I hope you win!

If you get really good then you can score a LOT of Swag Bucks through the tournaments. Play for free until you get the hang of it, then start with the small tournaments and work up to the larger tourneys.

With tournaments your first score is your final score, and you can’t redo it! So train train train before you spend your Swag Bucks!

Final Rating

I like this type of game because it makes you think, but you’re also restricted within some pretty tight guidelines. (Aka, four freakin’ letters!) Sometimes when games have a ton of options I get overwhelmed and stressed out. But I can totally handle four letter words.

Oh! And yes, Word Chain Plus counts swear words as “real” words too. I spelled “fuck” and proceeded to giggle like a 5 year old. *^_^*

Final rating? 5 stars! The multiplier system added a great twist to what might have been a boringish game. Bravo!

News – KadoKado smooshes clan tournaments.

If you’re not familiar with KadoKado then this will all sound pretty weird. Bear with me. ^_^

I joined a clan a few months ago, and finally figured out how they worked! KadoKado calls every two weeks a “Kalendar period,” and clan tournaments consisted of 2 periods. So one tournament lasted a month. (Yes, it felt like forever.)

Period 1 consisted of missions, where the clan got a group of game scores to beat. You had 24 hours to beat a mission. Whenever you finished it (or if the time ran out) you got a new mission. Completed missions earn points.

Period 2 consisted of attacking other clans and defending your own clan from attack. To attack a clan you play a game of your choice, and your score is the “attack.” If they can’t beat your score within 12 hours then you win points, and they lose points. If they do beat your score then nobody loses or gains anything.

Confused yet? ^_^ Well now they’ve taken the mission & attack periods and combined them into one freakin’ period!!

GAH!!

The most confusing part is that now each clan has two rankings at a time: The mission rating and the attack rating. Totally makes my head spin right now.

But then, I don’t always adjust well to change. *^_^*

For more info you can read up on this KadoKado forum thread. It’s not perfect, but considering that there was NO official news update for the English site and the FAQ still lists the “old” clan info, it’s definitely better than nothing.

Right now I’m not sure what I think about the change. Shorter tournaments will be nice, but I’m trying to figure out how to use my Green Gems (game plays) now. Since you can play missions even after you have an attack out, I think I’ll focus on defense first, attack 2nd, and then mission whatever is left. Maybe. o_O

News – Candystand (potentially) adding a BIG prize!

I love the games at Candystand, but the prizes have generally been on the “meh” side of things. They’re looking to MAJORLY shake that up!

Don’t hurt yourself. That message, posted on Candystand’s Facebook page, says:

We’re working on a prize giveaway on Candystand of EPIC proportions… Imagine if playing games on Candystand could make you a millionaire! What would you do with $1 Million???

This would be freakin’ incredible if it becomes a reality. ^_^ IWON is the only other free-to-win site with a prize that big, and even then you win either $100k or $1 million. (Always read the fine print!)

I’m really interested to see how this turns out! And you’d better believe that I’ll be entering it. ^_^

News – Spigo revamps Gold membership!

Spigo has been hinting about this for a while, but they’ve finally released the new Gold Membership program! Alas, you can’t buy individual days anymore (which I rather liked) but you can still buy a month’s subscription or a year’s subscrip.

The whole thing is streamlined and simplified, which is fantastic! But uh, I’m a little confused about the “Price Reduction” that they’re touting. I don’t remember how much the monthly price was, but the yearly price is the exact same. How do I know this? Because I wrote it down and included it the Who Can Win post, published in August of last year! ^_^

But since I didn’t write down the previous monthly price, I can’t compare it. Oh well. (It’s now $6 a month.)

One REALLY neat thing they’ve added is a seniority feature for Gold. Here’s what it says on the site.

As a Gold Member on Spigo, you automatically earn seniority which gives access to otherwise hidden functions. The longer the time you have been a Gold Member, the more seniority you have and the more functions you get.
You can see the next function which will be available below.

The first function listed for me, a non-Gold member? Extra scratchcards. I freakin’ LOVE scratchcards. *^_^*

I think it’s a really neat idea to reward your customers for sticking with you, and it’s a brilliant marketing tactic to boot. I wanna know what the other functions are!!

On a last note, Spigo is kinda-sorta trying to keep their Facebook page active. Periodically they’re releasing daily challenges (with Spigo bonuses) that you can only find on the FB page, so pay attention!

And they just added a Behind the Scenes photo album where you can see pics of Spigo HQ! Looks like they were having quite a party. ^_^

Alright, people! Let’s figure out the solution to fix all the problems in the world! *Cracks a whip*

I think one of the biggest problems is that we tend to see people with different beliefs and societies as non-human. They are “other.” And I think that we do this because it makes war a heck of a lot easier. I’m not a soldier (so take this with a truckload of salt) but I imagine it would be harder to kill someone if you recognized that they have a family and a life, just like you.

However, by dehumanizing our opponents we’re essentially saying that they’re not as important as we are. Now I know that many people can (and do) feel compassion for all creatures, but a HUGE portion of people lack empathy.

As a painfully recent example, take a look at the reactions to what’s happening in Japan. Many, many people have publically said on Facebook and Twitter that Japan is getting what it deserved, because of the whole Pearl Harbor thing. (They’re forgetting the two nuclear bombs the USA dropped on Japan afterwards, but that’s just a tiny detail. </sarcasm>)

I’m sure they’d feel quite differently if it was their city that was destroyed, or their friends and family who were missing. But because they don’t see the Japanese people as being like “them,” there is no empathy.

To wrap things up, I’d like to share a dream that I had many years ago. I think it encapsulates some of what I’m trying to say here. (This is taken almost verbatim from my dream journal, btw.)

I was standing in front of a massive sheet of light yellow paper. The paper was so big i couldn't see the edges of it. An old man was using it as his canvas, painting a landscape. I looked closely at a painted tree and I saw leaves swirling as if blown by the wind, and glittering with hints of gold.

As I investigated his painting, he grabbed a large round brush and dabbed three splotches of blue on an empty space. As I watched, the splotches changed colors and shape. Then the painter spoke up.

"A man died yesterday."

I was shocked, but kept watching the splotches of blue. As I watched them stretch into multi-colored clouds, I said, "I'm sorry. Was it anyone you knew?"

The painter paused for a moment, then said, "We lived under the same sky. And in that, we were brothers."

That’s was the entire dream, and I hope I never forget it.

Doku Deluxe – I’d like mine with a side of fries and a shake, please!

Note: This guide is adapted from the Doku Deluxe guide that I wrote for Winster. (To be honest, re-editing mainly consisted of adding smiley faces back in. ^_^) The “Final Rating” section is completely my opinion and is not endorsed by Winster in any way.

Doku Deluxe is a simplified version of Sudoku, and it’s available only at Winster! If you’re familiar with Sudoku then this will be a breeze! If you’ve never played Sudoku in your life, well, then learning to play Doku Deluxe will be more like a bracing wind. Not bad though!

Let’s start at the beginning. When you play Doku Deluxe you’ll be in a room with up to four other players. Each person has their own Doku board.

Nice to meet you!

The board is a 4x4 grid divided into four colorful sections, or “quadrants.”

To get game pieces click “Spin” or hit the Enter key. Both methods work. ^_^ Whenever you have a clean board, the first time you hit “Spin” you’ll get 6-8 yellow numbers that fly to your board. You can’t move yellow numbers!

From then on out, each time you click “Spin” you’ll get a single game piece. It will have a white number (1-4) and a solid colored background that’s either purple, green, blue, or red.

The background color relates to score, but it’s really a bonus feature. More will be explained in the points section.

You can move pieces around the board by clicking and dragging them to new squares. Now, if you want to trade with a teammate, just click on the piece you want to trade away and drag it to the piece that you want. Your teammate will see a Yes/No balloon pop up with a picture of what you’re offering. If your teammate accepts the trade, the pieces will switch places!

On the other hand, if someone sends you a trade then you’ll see a Yes/No balloon pop up with a picture of what they’re offering. You don’t have to accept any trades if you don’t want to, but they’re a great way to finish your puzzle quicker and maybe make a friend or two along the way!

How do you finish the puzzle? Well, each quadrant has to have the numbers 1-4 in it. The background color of the pieces don’t matter, but you can’t have any repeating numbers!

In addition to each quadrant needing to have the numbers 1-4, each row has to have the numbers 1-4 too.

Again, the exact colors don’t matter, but you can’t have any repeating numbers!

Lastly, each column has to have the numbers 1-4 too.

A finished puzzle has no repeating numbers in each quadrant, row, and column! Take a look!

Hey! Where are you going? Come back here! I promise you, this isn’t impossible! Remember those yellow numbers you get at the very start? Since those numbers are always in the right spot you can figure the rest out with a little detective work. Here, we’ll start one together.

	It’s the first spin and you got six yellow numbers! Think of them as anchors for the rest of the puzzle.
	On the next spin you get a purple 2. It’s in the right color quadrant, but is it in the right spot?
	First look across the row to see if there’s another 2. All clear on that count! Next look down the column to see if there’s a 2. There is! That means the purple 2 isn’t in the right spot. Just move it over one square.
	Now the purple 2 is in the purple quadrant, and there aren’t any conflicts (duplicate numbers) in the row, column, or quadrant that it’s in. It’s in the right spot! Time to spin!
	A green 1. It doesn’t conflict with any other numbers, so you could leave it there for now. But if you want the color bonus you should move it over to the green quadrant.
	On your 3rd spin you get a green 2! Now the green quadrant is complete.
	As you spin, keep checking that numbers are in the right spots. If you have “extras” you can trade them or spin them to get different pieces. (This puzzle still needs some work.)
	Once everything is in the right spot, Doku Deluxe will automatically submit the puzzle and you’ll get Winster points!

That’s it! Just take it one piece at a time. Before you know it everything will click and it’ll seem so easy! ^_^

Points

You’ve probably noticed the pretty colors on the Doku boards. No? Well take a look again.

This is what your board looks like before there are any numbers on it. If you finish a Doku puzzle AND keep the colors intact, you’ll get double the points! This is a bonus and isn’t required, so don’t worry if you can’t do it.

Tips & Tricks

1. One Step At A Time

Start by focusing on the quadrants. First, work until you have one of each number in each quadrant. If you want to get the color bonus then spin any “wrong” color pieces or trade them to a teammate!

Once you have the quadrants settled, take each row one at a time. If you see something like this:

Then you know it’s mixed up. Switch pieces around until the row looks right. If you want to keep the color bonus, only switch pieces that are the same color! This will keep each quadrant in it’s separate color.

Work your way through each row. If the puzzle doesn’t flash and vanish (meaning you got it!) start working through the columns in the same way. You can do it!

2. Puzzle Protection

Remember, once the number part of Doku Deluxe is solved, the puzzle automatically submits to Winster and you get points! If you’re working on the color bonus and just need one more piece, be careful! Any piece with the right number and any color background can finish the puzzle for you!

To avoid losing out on the generous bonus, switch two numbers so that they’re in the wrong spot. This way you won’t accidentally complete the puzzle! Once you have the final piece, switch the mixed up pieces back into place.

3. Help Others Out

If you have a piece that you can’t use, look around before you get rid of it! Most players arrange pieces in the “correct” spots as they go, so it’s pretty easy to tell what they need. If you have an extra red 2, look to see who doesn’t have a red 2!

4. Be Polite!

Always say "Thank you!" and "You're welcome!" after trading pieces! At Winster they make this incredibly easy. Just click on the "ty" or "yw" buttons and you'll automatically say "Thank you" or "You're welcome!"

To thank a specific person, click and hold on "ty." A list will pop up with the names of all of the players in the room!

When you don't say "Thank you!" you appear ungrateful. People notice this and will stop giving you their extra pieces. It pays to be polite!

Final Rating

I really like Sudoku, but Doku Deluxe just doesn’t cut it for me. I suppose it’s a decent starting ground for beginners, but if you’re a pro you probably won’t be too impressed.
