To Slash or Not to Slash – That is the SEO Question

Did you know...

that by merely having a slash after your Domain Name URL can
waste a big part of your link-building efforts?

Indeed it can!

I’ll try to help show you how to avoid the mistake which many people are doing and don’t realize it. This mistake has appeared on many discussion sites and created heated debates on various SEO forums. If you’re not sure how to protect yourself from this mistake, a big portion of your link building efforts can, and will, go down the drain.

You need to understand the mistake so we need to start with an explanation.

Here’s what Google sees...

your domain name with the slash after .com (or .info or .net etc) and your domain name without the slash appear as TWO DIFFERENT PAGES for Google.

For example, http://www.freeadvertisinggallery.com/ (with the slash) and http://www.freeadvertisinggallery.com (without the slash) are two separate pages to the all-mighty G. This applies to all sites, for all types of domains.

However, when you type the url’s into your browser and hit Enter, the end result is the same page. So, to your visitors it doesn’t make any difference.

The Problem is...

when you are building backlinks to your home page, most people do not pay attention to the slash/non-slash issue. Sometimes you build backlinks to the domain with a slash, and sometimes without a slash. To Google, this means you are dispersing your links to 2 urls.

Let’s say for example, you have built 1,000 backlinks to date. 500 of these backlinks point to the domain with a slash and the other 500 to the domain without a slash. To Google, you are missing the first set of 500 backlinks since they have been essentially "wasted" on a another version of your home page!

So what should you do?

The solution can be simple...

When you start (or continue) building links to your site, make a choice. Either build links only to your domain.com/ (with slash) or to domain.com (without slash) and STICK to your decision.

Of course, you do not control over all incoming links. Some other webmasters may use the slash or not when they add your site to link to you. If you see this has happened, you may try to contact them and ask them to modify the link to meet your needs. But NEVER force them to make any changes as they can always delete your link if instead.

You can always do research of your incoming links and see what type of backlink is more common to point to your home page - with slash or without slash - then choose the type which prevails. For instance, your research shows that you have 50 backlinks with a slash and only 13 without a slash. Then you can choose to build more backlinks with a slash, because this represents a bigger part of your backlinks already in place.

Most of the link building is under your control, so be aware of which url choice you want to use and continue to stick with your choice.

Here’s another point I should mention...

The usage of "www" before your domain and a "/" at the end, as well as the non-usage of these, actually has the Search Engines thinking there are 4 different versions of the same page and will distribute PageRank to each version. Review these carefully:

1) www.freeadvertisinggallery.com (with ‘www’)
2) freeadvertisinggallery.com (without)
3) www.freeadvertisinggallery.com/ (with a slash)
4) freeadvertisinggallery.com/ (without)

The trick to stopping the dilution of your PageRank, is to simply enter
the following code into your .htaccess file.
(This file should be in the public-html folder of your site's cpanel):
You can always ask your hosting provider for assistance as well.

Back links are the back bone of an internet business. Then can literally make or break your internet business because the major search engines rank your website with regards to how many you have. All other things considered, the more you have, the higher your website will rank and the more free traffic you will receive.

There are many ways to pick up back links online, first let me explain what it is just to be clear. It is quite simply a link on someone elses website pointing back to your website. These can either be in url form; http:// yourwebsite ; or hyper linked with your keywords. A hyper link is just a clickable text with a hidden url code that will bring you to that url.

One way to pick them up is by contributing thoughts and opinions in relevant forums. To find a few forums in your specified niche, just do a quick search in Google. Then all you have to do is sign up and set up your signature file. Your signature will usually appear under your comments and this is where the link will be seen. For each post you make you will get one back link to your website.

Forums are a great way to pick up a bunch of back links and you should aim for at least 5 posts a day on a few different forums. After awhile they will really begin to add up. Whatever you do though, do not merely post only to get back links. Many times the moderators at these forums will ban you for spamming if you do not leave well thought out and meaningful posts.

Another great way to pick up back links that carry a lot of weight are through article marketing. Every time you write and distribute an article, the article directories will allow you to leave a link in your authors resource box. So the more unique articles you write, the more links you will get. Some search engines will not count them more than once from a duplicate article so it will do no good to submit one article to 30 article directories. Most likely you will only get credit for one back link.

Some other ways to pick up back links are by leaving comments on other peoples blogs, submitting press releases, submitting to online directories, link exchanges, and social bookmarking.

It is best to set up a daily goal. I usually shoot for 20 a day. Too much each day will not look natural to the search engines and too little you will get passed up by your competition. Search engine optimization (SEO) is thought to be tough, difficult and time consuming by many. In this article, you can learn a few very simple SEO tricks that work very well on Google. Use these tricks to get your blog post ranked for a particular keyword.

If that keyword has 50-100 searches daily that means a good traffic to your blog daily. Using these simple tricks, many of my blog posts have top ranking for a number of keywords on Google. This gives my blog lots of traffic.

If you have a blog, then you need at least 50 posts for these tricks to work. In the beginning, Google will not take notice. But if you are consistent in posting a least once on your blog, Google will take notice once you have more than 50 posts.

Google likes fresh content. Since blogs provide fresh content to Google on daily basis. Google indexes blog posts much faster than webpages. If you are posting at least once everyday, your blog will get priority with Googlebot and it will index the post (in most cases) in 15 minutes.

Choose a keyword that you want to get your blog post ranked before writing the post. It is very important that you use that keyword in the title of that post.

Try to use that keyword in the first sentence within the first twenty five words, the closer to the start, the better. Use the keyword in the blog post a number of times but dont try to exceed more than 4% keyword density. Use of the keyword should be made in a natural manner.

Try to include three or four links in the post containing the keyword solely. Give emphasis by bolding the link. The URL of that post should also contain the keyword as an extension like http:// www.Yourdomain.com/keyword. Both wordpress and blogger allow you to do this.

But in Blogger, once you have published the post, you cannot change the URL of the post. Publish the post using only the keyword in the title. Later on you can edit and change the title again if you want. You can change the title but it should still contain the keyword.

This way you are telling Google; hey this is the keyword for this post. I have used these simple tricks for getting top ranking for keywords having 100,000 to 1000,000 competing webpages. - 20369
