Business owners find it intriguing when they read Internet consumption statistics telling them that over 60% of the local purchase decisions are made online and that as many as 78% of the customers research about services and products online, before contacting a business, either online or offline. That is an awfully huge number and as most of the business owners would see – there is not much that comes their way, neither in terms of web traffic nor in the form of

inquiries. What may be the possible reasons?

We are at an interesting crossroads when it comes to the Internet. It appears that marketing has become mobile, local and social; all at the same time. The local business owner is not faced with the question – “What to do”, but instead it is the plethora of choice, platforms and experts that make their life full of options and hence confusion. Add to that the still existent Yellow pages and trade publications. Small business owners have too many choices and this creates a hurdle in coming up with a decision of which channels to prioritize and which ones to leave.

If you have a business which is focused within a locality, a metro area, a county or even within a state, your traffic that “converts” comes from the target region. If you are in Cleveland, OH and sell dermatology services, chances are that most of your customers would be from North-east Ohio and not from other states, until and unless you have a big brand name and a spotless reputation.

Since we are in a mode of “prioritizing”, we would be looking at search rather than social as a traffic channel. The returns from a social marketing campaign originating on sites like Facebook and Twitter are still very low and for most of the small businesses, the traffic numbers are way too small. We have seen examples of Facebook sending tons of traffic to sites which are either in a particular industry type like hospitality, music, fashion, food or are a very well known brand themselves. For the other businesses, web traffic from social media websites is still an illusion.

Google is the dominant player in the search marketplace and with the “segmentation” that it has done over last two years, local is the new global. With the evolution of better Maps functionality and a highly evolved local business center, known as Google Places, Google has turned the table and made the playing field level for most of the small businesses which do not have a strong brand presence.

Any business focusing locally should have a 2 pronged strategy when it comes to marketing online locally on a search engine. The first focus should be on organic rankings on Google for terms which have a geo-local modifier. A geo-local modifier is a location name that is used in conjunction with a keyword to show local results. We all do it all the time. I am in Columbus as I am writing this article and to search for a music teacher in Columbus, I may add Columbus to terms like “music lessons”, personal music lessons” or “music teachers”. This would narrow the results locally and websites that are locally owned or operated or national businesses which have a local brand may show up.

How to Get High Rankings in Google for Keywords with Geographical Modifier?

It is the same as SEO and if you are still not sure what SEO means, you may have to do some learning before you can apply these local SEO techniques:

Ensure the usage of hCard for address and phone number wrapper DIVs.
Mention your address on the footer of every page along with the phone number.
Have your business location map and driving directions integrated on your contact page using Google Maps
Use the location modifier in your title, meta description and throughout the body copy, without making it look artificial.
Build local links. These can be websites about your city and state, local newspapers, chamber of commerce, list pages, local directories etc.

Friends and family members often ask me how to start a blog, and I always enjoy explaining the advantages of a blog over a traditional website, but it is a lot information to take in over dinner. I thought I would document the process to make it easier to understand.

I recently created a video that documents some of what is discussed in this article.

1. Decide What You Want To Blog About

There are a lot of bloggers on the web already. If you want to attract readers, you are going to need to establish your credibility. Don't just blog about anything. Pick a topic you are are passionate about. Something that you have lots of experience with.

Decide: To Host or Not To Host

When it comes to starting a blog, your biggest decision will be whether you want to host the blog yourself, or use a free blogging service that is hosted for you.
Free Blogging Services
Yes, it's free, but nothing is really free. When you start a blog with a free blogging service, you don't get your own domain. You get something like mygreatblog.blogspot.com (where there are a million other blogs at blogspot.com) and you don't actually own the blog. If you ever do decide to move to your own domain, you have no way to take your readers with you, because you have no control over the site.
Cheap - Host your own blog using WordPress free Blog software
This is the method I suggest, because it offers much more flexibility and freedom to do what you want. You will have your own domain name, like mygreatblog.com. You can get this for as little as $30 per year. In my experience, WordPress is excellent free blog software that allows you flexibility and room to grow.

Find a Domain Name

For me this part is fun. You know what your theme is already, so now you have to find a good domain name.

Find a Web Host for Your Blog

By far, the easiest way to get a website is to go with a hosting company that offers "1 click installs", or instant installations for Blogging and Forum software. Blogs and Forums make it possible for someone with no experience to get good content up fast.

Dreamhost Hosting
For beginners, I recommend Dreamhost, because they tend to care, where as many other huge hosting companies don't. They cost a bit more, about $119 for a year, but it is worth it. If you are on a budget, I recommend 1and1 hosting. They are much less expensive, but the one thing to be aware of is that can take a little bit longer to get good support at 1and1. Install WordPress

Installation Overview If you have experience with installing web applications that use mySQL, this could take as little as 5 minutes to do, and the 5 steps below may be all you need, however, I have further explained each step below for beginners.

In my previous post I introduced and discussed the importance of the website traffic monitor AlexaRank. Whether you value your Alexa traffic ranking or not there are definite advantages to having a high AlexRank. Many webmasters and business folk look at the AlexaRank as a reasonable representation of a site’s traffic. If you are selling advertising from your site the more “proof” you can demonstrate of your traffic – and in AlexaRank’s case it is an independent valuation of your traffic, which adds credibility – the more likely advertisers will come knocking at your door willing to give you some of their ad budget.

Make More Money From Text Links

It’s well known that many text link brokers, such as Text-Link-Ads.com (aff), factor in AlexaRank when determining the price to charge advertisers for links on your site or blog. The higher you raise your AlexaRank the more you potentially can earn, and this reason alone is enough to pay attention to methods to increase your AlexaRank.

An AlexaRank Experiment

AlexaRank is calculated using the Alexa Toolbar. Alexa takes the browsing data from the millions of people using the Toolbar and calculates the traffic ranking of each site. As Alexa states, while low traffic sites are harder to gauge accurately, once a site reaches a 100,000 or less ranking the accuracy of the measure increases. Hence if you can top a 10,000 AlexaRank, or even 1000, the credibility of that ranking is increased.

As Blaine Moore pointed out in a comment made to my previous AlexaRank article, it is easy to – as he put it – “game” the AlexaRank if you have a tool that checks AlexaRank installed on your computer, and that doesn’t have to be just the toolbar, it can be for a FireFox extension like SearchStatus, which I recently installed on my browser. These tools send data to Alexa, and when Alexa receives any data about your surfing habits it will raise the traffic rankings for the sites you provide data for – and if you visit your own sites often you can raise your ranking.

I can’t verify that installing any AlexaRank checking tool will help your own site’s AlexaRank and to be honest after I installed SearchStatus I did not notice any significant change in my AlexaRank at my blogs. It wasn’t until I conducted a different experiment that I noticed more verifiable proof of a technique to increase your site’s AlexaRank.

How I Increased My AlexaRank By More Than 25%

Here’s how my logic went – I figured the toolbar and other AlexaRank checking tools tell Alexa my browsing habits, which is fine, but I’m only one person visiting my blogs (albeit I do it many times each day). What I really want is a way to tell Alexa about every person who visits my blogs, not just me. In order to do this, the Alexa reporting tool needs to be on my blog and downloaded by every person who visits my site each time they visit.

The obvious answer was to install an Alexa Site Widget on each of my blogs. The widget looks like this:

If you click it you will be taken to my current Alexa traffic ranking data. You can also find the live widget in the sidebar of all my blogs.

After installing this widget on to my blogs, within the next few days my rankings increased at least 25%. This blog, Entrepreneurs-Journey.com, was sitting around the 19,000 AlexaRank mark and within seven days had dropped to just above 15,000 as I type this. Prior to this gain my AlexaRank increases had been slow and steady, but never as significant as this in a short period of time, unless of course I earned a traffic spike from some other site(s) linking to me.

I noticed similar results at SmallBusinessBranding.com and theBlogTrafficSchool.com Blog too, which makes me almost 100% certain that installing the Alexa site widget will increase your AlexaRank.

This makes complete sense, as my thinking above explains. If every visitor to your blog downloads the Alexa site widget when they visit your site, then Alexa has data on every visitor you have, at least every web reader, I don’t think RSS readers count since they never download the widget unless they go to your site. You might call this “gaming” your AlexaRank, but in this case I don’t think that’s an apt description – installing the site widget in fact helps to give Alexa enough data to provide your true AlexaRank, as opposed to what it thinks it should be based on the data it has from it’s toolbar users.

If you sell advertising from your blog or website then you should care about your AlexaRank. If that is the case then installing the Alexa site widget is a must. It takes only a few seconds and could significantly improve your current AlexaRank.

Trifecta from SEOmoz

One of the more unique tools in this list, Trifecta will analyze a page, a blog, or an entire domain based on slightly different criteria. Trifecta will produce numbers based on a variety of factors and it will give you an overall score. Without a pro membership you’re limited to one report per day.

This tool will give you a good idea of how search friendly you site is, and it will also give you a percentage rating. It bases the rating on factors like meta tags, use of headers, images and alt tags, load time, and links.

Web Page Analyzer from WebsiteOptimization.com

This free tool will give you plenty of information to work with. It will test how long the page takes to load, how many objects are on the page, the size of the objects and more. The most helpful part of the report that is produced is the “Analysis and Recommendations” section where it will list 11 aspects of the page and give you a rating. Red items are warnings, yellow items are cautions, and green items are good.

SEO Analysis Tool

Get a lengthy and detailed report from this tool. It will analyze things like your meta tags, keywords, and anchor text on the page. It’s a good resource for getting a nice overall look at the SEO of your page.

The Escape’s Web Page Analyzer
