5 Steps to Successful Exclusive Breast Pumping-Step 3

Step 3: Stick to a Schedule

Setting a schedule will benefit both you and your baby. Your body will produce milk at the rate that you express it. If you pump at one time this day and another time the next day then your body doesn't know how to produce the milk or if you still need it. I was uncomfortable at first. I suggest starting out pumping every three hours. When I did this it was very difficult, because many times when I needed to pump the baby was hungry too. At first I had my husband home to help, but once he went back to work I had to figure out how to feed or entertain the baby while I pumped. My style of pump does not lend itself to holding my baby while I pump. As a matter of fact there are few things I can hold while pumping. I also learned that I need to be sitting upright with a support on my back, usually in a chair, so that my arms and back did not hurt. I had to be creative and think of ways to attend to my son's needs while I expressed the milk. During this time I would sometimes sit on the floor on a pillow and lean against the wall. Then I could put the baby in a bouncer, lean him on the boppy or lye him on the floor. This way I could feed him or entertain him if he needed me while I was pumping. Again I will admit that this wasn't easy and it was often stressful, but I also knew it would be short-lived. I realized that my son would soon eat less often making my life easier. I later adjusted my pumping schedule and now I only pump four times a day. This works great for us now. My son has adjusted to the schedule and usually is sleeping or napping while I pump. At about six months I put him on an eating schedule around my pumping schedule. It worked great and we are smooth sailing now probably all the way to the twelve month mark.

It is so important to stick to the schedule. As I said before this will keep you more comfortable. I believe it also helps your body produce milk best. Your body knows what to expect and when to produce. It would be pretty much the same way if you were nursing. Your child would eat at about the same time and consume about the same amount. The first eight weeks were the most uncomfortable for me. I had the most problems usually with the same breast. The main issues were getting chapped, tenderness and milk duct clogs. I researched a lot and was able to solve the problems, but I think sticking to my schedule better would have prevented the clogs and some tenderness. If you really want to do this realize that you will have frustrating issues, but also realize that your body will adjust and you can do it. This advice is from my personal experience. Yours may be completely different and you may have no problems at all.

In the beginning I tried to stick to my schedule to a tee. I think this helped my body get adjusted to lactation since this was my first child. Now I can adjust the schedule when needed. This doesn't mean I skip pumps or go huge amounts of time in-between pumps. I try to pump with in the hour. For example, in the evenings I pump at 6pm. Most days I do this right at 6, but sometimes the baby maybe fussy, I may need to go somewhere before or after, or I may need to get supper going. When this happens I either pump one hour earlier or later. To explain this better, my pump time is 6pm so I pump between the hours of 5pm and 7pm; an hour before or an hour after the scheduled pump time.

Keeping to the schedule is not easy, but it is necessary and requires planning. Realize that this will affect not just you and your baby, but your family too. Your family needs to understand the importance of sticking with the schedule. This means when making plans to go out you need to either make a plan to pump before, after, or in a private place where you are going. If I knew I was going to be somewhere away from home for a while I would plan to pump in the car or call ahead and ask the place if there was a private place where I could pump with a door that locked and an electrical outlet. Most places where glad to help me and were honest if they did not have an appropriate place.

I have a list of all the items I need to pack with my pump so that I have everything I need when pumping somewhere else. I keep this list with my pump and it includes: timer, icepack with bottles and lids, bra, towel, horns, paper towels, bottle adaptors, notepad, pencil, and Ziploc bags. Depending on your needs and pump your list could be completely different from mine. I just did not want to be hours away from home, sit down to pump and realize I don't have a part I need to pump. The list works for me. I have a specific area set aside at home where I keep my pump plugged up and ready to go with all the needed parts and accessories. I also wash all the parts right after pumping. This gives them time to dry in time for the next pump.

Another suggestion is to try to plan on leaving for outings or running errands right after pumping. This will give you the most time before you have to be back to pump the next time. It always takes longer than you expect to do anything. Give yourself plenty of time. There is nothing worse than standing in line to pay for groceries knowing you will still have to load and unload them at home with sore breasts. I will say again, give yourself plenty of time, or get someone to do it for you.

Here is a look at my current pumping schedule:

6am-20 minutes

Noon-30 minutes

6pm-30 minutes

11pm-20 minutes

I pump shorter amounts of time at 6am and 11pm so that I can get a little more sleep at night. My son sleeps through the night, but I still have the pumping schedule to keep up with. When pumping, I use a timer. This way I am not constantly watching the clock and driving myself crazy. I can read, make notes, or watch TV. During the last 10 minutes I massage from my arm pit down my breast to help the process along and make sure that I am empty when time is up. Sometimes I have to pump longer if I am not empty, but the timer gives me a pretty close time schedule.

When you get ready to set your schedule think about your work schedule if you will be going back to work. Next blog I will share with you how I changed my schedule from every three hours to what it is now. I did this to accommodate my work schedule the best.

How the Air Swimmers Work

To make it swim you need to wiggle the control stick back and forth. If you want to make it swim to the right you need to wiggle the stick more to the right, and the same thing for making the air swimmer swim to the left.

My husband and I just got back from our first trip with our eight month old. We decided to go on a short weekend trip to visit some family. The ride there was only four hours so we felt like the baby could handle it. We had a great time and our baby did great. I was concerned about getting him off of his schedule, out of a routine and being in a different place especially overnight. So to easy my mind the adventure began a few weeks ago with the packing list.

As my husband says, I am OCD when it comes to making lists. Sometimes I have too many and lots of times they are scattered all over the house on little slips of paper (although I am getting better at this), but when it comes to preparing for a trip I am a pro at making the packing list. A couple of weeks ago I started thinking about what my son really needed to be the most comfortable and at home on the trip.

As I did different things with him and for him throughout that week I started making a list on the computer. I put like items together. For example, as I was feeding him I looked at all I used: a bib, a spoon, the milk, the food, a toy he plays with, the high chair, and a wet washcloth for cleaning up. I added all these things to my list and grouped them together to make packing and unpacking easier later. I also did this for diaper changes, baths, nap time and sleep time. I also thought of any activities we might do there. For example, I knew we were going to visit a state park, and we might go swimming at the hotel pool. I added the items needed for these activities to my list as well. I even added cleanup items like paper towels and Clorox wipes. If you are planning a trip I suggest spending a week or at least a couple of days trying to think of all you do and all the things that make those activities more convenient. I might pack too much, but I would rather have something I didn't need than get there and need it.

Next, I started thinking about how I would pack the car. We have a nice big trunk, but our jogging stroller, that I love, takes up a lot of that space. Plus, we were going to be bringing Nanny back home with us along with her luggage so I had to make everything fit just right. I thought about the bags and boxes I already had and I tried to think of how I could use them to fit around the stroller that sits awkwardly in the car. I found a big bag that could fit back behind the stroller, but I knew I would still need more space for packing. Finally, I thought about using the space underneath the stroller. I pulled out one of my under-the-bed storage boxes that I thought might work. I took it out to the car to see if it would fit under the stroller. I had to fold down the food tray on the stroller, but I was able to fit it underneath. It fit perfectly. We would have to pack some things in a plastic box instead of a suitcase, but at least it would all fit.

The next task was to decide which items needed to be packed in the front of the car. I knew I wanted my son's lunch for traveling day up front so I could feed him as we went down the road. I would also need my breast pump, money, and snacks. I further developed my packing list by dividing it into what goes up front and what goes in the back of the car.

I also knew that there were some things to pack or do at the last-minute like turn down the AC, turn off the lights, pack deodorant, etc. I added these items to pack and things to do in another section of my list. I kept each section labeled and moved some items from section to section as needed.

Last, I started packing. I began this the day before we left. I put all like items together. For example, everything I would need for feeding the baby was put together in one place and everything for changing diapers was packed together. This made it easier to pack and accomplish tasks on the trip. Anything that could be packed in a smaller package was. I took the baby's oatmeal out of the box and put it in individual bags for the trip. Instead of taking a big box I only had three small Ziploc bags. It took up less room and was lighter. The day before leaving I packed as much as possible and put some items in the car. The day we left I used my list to double-check everything and finished packing the last items and doing the other items on the list.

I have to say this trip was a blast. We had a great time. I think this was due to being prepared. I feel most comfortable when I know everything is covered. I wanted to keep the baby comfortable and I think he was. Another tip is to plan on stopping often to let the baby stretch his legs. We stopped every hour to hour and a half. I know I wouldn't want to be stuck in a car seat unable to move much for hours on end.

If you are planning a trip with a baby or even children a little preparation and planning will go a long way. It was nice to go on a short trip for his first vacation. Now I feel comfortable about our next longer trip!

Is your kid a cute boy or a pretty girl? You know boys like robots and trucks, right? And you know that baby girls love Barbie as well?

Yet I see there are people who give their young girl a Transformer robot to play with this Christmas! I agree that there are exceptions. However, unless you know that your kid likes playing with that kind of toys, please don’t make that mistake!

Always remember to buy your kids gifts that fit their genders. Even if s/he doesn't like it, at least it fits the role.

Mistake #2: Choosing inappropriate gifts for your child’s age

Another minor mistake, but it leads to big disappointment.

Let me take toys as example, if you pay close attention you can see that they have something like a badge that tells us the suitable ages of children.

If you have a young son, never buy him something that be harmful while playing. If you have older children, you might consider buying them toys that help grow their creativity.

Mistake #3: Pay less attention on educational gifts

Fact is, your kid loves shiny and colorful things. That’s the reason why educational toys were once abandoned by many.

5] A harder game is Where is Santa? A child is chosen to become Rudolf and is escorted out of the room to get blindfolded while someone is selected to be Santa. Rudolf is brought back in and paced in the centre of the circle still blindfolded.

Santa has to wink at various people who have to say "Yo, ho, ho". Santa is the sole one who never speaks.

6] How about Pin the Tail on the Reindeer for the final game and give a prize for the winner of each game.
