Preface to the Third Edition

In the second edition of Probability and Statistics, which appeared in 2000, the guiding principle was to make changes in the first edition only where necessary to bring the work in line with the emphasis on topics in contemporary texts. In addition to refinements throughout the text, a chapter on nonparametric statistics was added to extend the applicability of the text without raising its level. This theme is continued in the third edition in which the book has been reformatted and a chapter on Bayesian methods has been added. In recent years, the Bayesian paradigm has come to enjoy increased popularity and impact in such areas as economics, environmental science, medicine, and finance. Since Bayesian statistical analysis is highly computational, it is gaining even wider acceptance with advances in computer technology. We feel that an introduction to the basic principles of Bayesian data analysis is therefore in order and is consistent with Professor Murray R. Spiegel’s main purpose in writing the original text—to present a modern introduction to probability and statistics using a background of calculus. J. SCHILLER R. A. SRINIVASAN

Preface to the Second Edition

The first edition of Schaum’s Probability and Statistics by Murray R. Spiegel appeared in 1975, and it has gone through 21 printings since then. Its close cousin, Schaum’s Statistics by the same author, was described as the clearest introduction to statistics in print by Gian-Carlo Rota in his book Indiscrete Thoughts. So it was with a degree of reverence and some caution that we undertook this revision. Our guiding principle was to make changes only where necessary to bring the text in line with the emphasis of topics in contemporary texts. The extensive treatment of sets, standard introductory material in texts of the 1960s and early 1970s, is considerably reduced.

The definition of a continuous random variable is now the standard one, and more emphasis is placed on the cumulative distribution function since it is a more fundamental concept than the probability density function. Also, more emphasis is placed on the P values of hypotheses tests, since technology has made it possible to easily determine these values, which provide more specific information than whether or not tests meet a prespecified level of significance.

Technology has also made it possible to eliminate logarithmic tables. A chapter on nonparametric statistics has been added to extend the applicability of the text without raising its level. Some problem sets have been trimmed, but mostly in cases that called for proofs of theorems for which no hints or help of any kind was given. Overall we believe that the main purpose of the first edition—to present a modern introduction to probability and statistics using a background of calculus—and the features that made the first edition such a great success have been preserved, and we hope that this edition can serve an even broader range of students. Preface to the First Edition

The important and fascinating subject of probability began in the seventeenth century through efforts of such mathematicians as Fermat and Pascal to answer questions concerning games of chance. It was not until the twentieth century that a rigorous mathematical theory based on axioms, definitions, and theorems was developed. As time progressed, probability theory found its way into many applications, not only in engineering, science, and mathematics but in fields ranging from actuarial science, agriculture, and business to medicine and psychology. In many instances the applications themselves contributed to the further development of the theory.

The subject of statistics originated much earlier than probability and dealt mainly with the collection, organization, and presentation of data in tables and charts. With the advent of probability it was realized that statistics could be used in drawing valid conclusions and making reasonable decisions on the basis of analysis of data, such as in sampling theory and prediction or forecasting.

The purpose of this book is to present a modern introduction to probability and statistics using a background of calculus. For convenience the book is divided into two parts.

The first deals with probability (and by itself can be used to provide an introduction to the subject), while the second deals with statistics.

The book is designed to be used either as a textbook for a formal course in probability and statistics or as a comprehensive supplement to all current standard texts. It should also be of considerable value as a book of reference for research workers or to those interested in the field for self-study.

The book can be used for a one-year course, or by a judicious choice of topics, a one-semester course. I am grateful to the Literary Executor of the late Sir Ronald A. Fisher, F.R.S., to Dr. Frank Yates, F.R.S., and to Longman Group Ltd., London, for permission to use Table III from their book Statistical Tables for Biological, Agricultural and Medical Research (6th edition, 1974). General Approach and Mathematical Level

Our emphasis in creating the ninth edition is less on adding new material and more on providing clarity and deeper understanding. This objective was accomplished in part by including new end-of-chapter material that adds connective tissue between chapters. We affectionately call these comments at the end of the chapter “Pot Holes.” They are very useful to remind students of the big picture and how each chapter fits into that picture, and they aid the student in learning about limitations and pitfalls that may result if procedures are misused. A deeper understanding of real-world use of statistics is made available through class projects, which were added in several chapters. These projects provide the opportunity for students alone, or in groups, to gather their own experimental data and draw inferences. In some cases, the work involves a problem whose solution will illustrate the meaning of a concept or provide an empirical understanding of an important statistical result. Some existing examples were expanded and new ones were introduced to create “case studies,” in which commentary is provided to give the student a clear understanding of a statistical concept in the context of a practical situation.

In this edition, we continue to emphasize a balance between theory and applications. Calculus and other types of mathematical support (e.g., linear algebra) are used at about the same level as in previous editions. The coverage of analytical tools in statistics is enhanced with the use of calculus when discussion centers on rules and concepts in probability. Probability distributions and statistical inference are highlighted in Chapters 2 through 10. Linear algebra and matrices are very lightly applied in Chapters 11 through 15, where linear regression and analysis of variance are covered. Students using this text should have had the equivalent of one semester of differential and integral calculus. Linear algebra is helpful but not necessary so long as the section in Chapter 12 on multiple linear regression using matrix algebra is not covered by the instructor. As in previous editions, a large number of exercises that deal with real-life scientific and engineering applications are available to challenge the student. The many data sets associated with the exercises are available for download from the website http://www.pearsonhighered.com/datasets.

Summary of the Changes in the Ninth Edition
• Class projects were added in several chapters to provide a deeper understanding of the real-world use of statistics. Students are asked to produce or gather their own experimental data and draw inferences from these data.
• More case studies were added and others expanded to help students understand the statistical methods being presented in the context of a real-life situation. For example, the interpretation of confidence limits, prediction limits, and tolerance limits is given using a real-life situation.
• “Pot Holes” were added at the end of some chapters and expanded in others. These comments are intended to present each chapter in the context of the big picture and discuss how the chapters relate to one another. They also provide cautions about the possible misuse of statistical techniques presented in the chapter.
• Chapter 1 has been enhanced to include more on single-number statistics as well as graphical techniques. New fundamental material on sampling and experimental design is presented.
• Examples added to Chapter 8 on sampling distributions are intended to motivate P-values and hypothesis testing. This prepares the student for the more challenging material on these topics that will be presented in Chapter 10.
• Chapter 12 contains additional development regarding the effect of a single regression variable in a model in which collinearity with other variables is severe.
• Chapter 15 now introduces material on the important topic of response surface methodology (RSM). The use of noise variables in RSM allows the illustration of mean and variance (dual response surface) modeling.
• The central composite design (CCD) is introduced in Chapter 15.
• More examples are given in Chapter 18, and the discussion of using Bayesian methods for statistical decision making has been enhanced.

Preface
Revising this textbook has been a special challenge, for a very nice reason. So many
people have read this book, and taught from it, and even loved it. The spirit of the book
could never change. This text was written to help our teaching of linear algebra keep up
with the enormous importance of this subject-which just continues to grow.
One step was certainly possible and desirable-to add new problems. Teaching
for all these years required hundreds of new exam questions (especially with quizzes
going onto the web). I think you will approve of the extended choice of problems. The
questions are still a mixture of explain and compute-the two complementary approaches
to learning this beautiful subject.
I personally believe that many more people need linear algebra than calculus.
Isaac Newton might not agree ! But he isn't teaching mathematics in the 21st century
(and maybe he wasn't a great teacher, but we will give him the benefit of the doubt).
Certainly the laws of physics are well expressed by differential equations. Newton needed
calculus-quite right. But the scope of science and engineering and management (and
life) is now so much wider, and linear algebra has moved into a central place.
May I say a little more, because many universities have not yet adjusted the balance
toward linear algebra. Working with curved lines and curved surfaces, the first step is
always to linearize. Replace the curve by its tangent line, fit the surface by a plane,
and the problem becomes linear. The power of this subject comes when you have ten
variables, or 1000 variables, instead of two.
You might think I am exaggerating to use the word "beautiful" for a basic course
in mathematics. Not at all. This subject begins with two vectors v and w, pointing in
different directions. The key step is to take their linear combinations. We multiply to
get 3v and 4w, and we add to get the particular combination 3v + 4w. That new vector
is in the same plane as v and w. When we take all combinations, we are filling in the
whole plane. If I draw v and w on this page, their combinations cv + dw fill the page
(and beyond), but they don't go up from the page.
In the language of linear equations, I can solve cv+dw = b exactly when the
vector b lies in the same plane as v and w.

Probability and statistics are fascinating subjects on the interface between mathematics and applied sciences that help us understand and solve practical problems. We believe that you, by learning how stochastic methods come about and why they work, will be able to understand the meaning of statistical statements as well as judge the quality of their content, when facing such problems on your own. Our philosophy is one of how and why: instead of just presenting stochastic methods as cookbook recipes, we prefer to explain the principles behind them. In this book you will find the basics of probability theory and statistics. In addition, there are several topics that go somewhat beyond the basics but that ought to be present in an introductory course: simulation, the Poisson process, the law of large numbers, and the central limit theorem. Computers have brought many changes in statistics.

In particular, the bootstrap has earned its place. It provides the possibility to derive confidence intervals and perform tests of hypotheses where traditional (normal approximation or large sample) methods are inappropriate. It is a modern useful tool one should learn about, we believe. Examples and data-sets in this book are mostly from real-life situations, at least that is what we looked for in illustrations of the material. Anybody who has inspected data-sets with the purpose of using them as elementary examples knows that this is hard: on the one hand, you do not want to boldly state assumptions that are clearly not satisfied; on the other hand, long explanations concerning side issues distract from the main points.

We hope that we found a good middle way. A first course in calculus is needed as a prerequisite for this book. In addition to high-school algebra, some infinite series are used (exponential, geometric). Integration and differentiation are the most important skills, mainly concerning one variable (the exceptions, two dimensional integrals, are encountered in Chapters 9–11). Although the mathematics is kept to a minimum, we strives to be mathematically correct throughout the book. With respect to probability and statistics the book is self-contained.

The book is aimed at undergraduate engineering students, and students from more business-oriented studies (who may gloss over some of the more mathematically oriented parts). At our own university we also use it for students in applied mathematics (where we put a little more emphasis on the math and add topics like combinatorics, conditional expectations, and generating functions). It is designed for a one-semester course: on average two hours in class per chapter, the first for a lecture, the second doing exercises. The material is also well-suited for self-study, as we know from experience. We have divided attention about evenly between probability and statistics.

The very first chapter is a sampler with differently flavored introductory examples, ranging from scientific success stories to a controversial puzzle. Topics that follow are elementary probability theory, simulation, joint distributions, the law of large numbers, the central limit theorem, statistical modeling (informal: why and how we can draw inference from data), data analysis, the bootstrap, estimation, simple linear regression, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing. Instead of a few chapters with a long list of discrete and continuous distributions, with an enumeration of the important attributes of each, we introduce a few distributions when presenting the concepts and the others where they arise (more) naturally.

A list of distributions and their characteristics is found in Appendix A. With the exception of the first one, chapters in this book consist of three main parts. First, about four sections discussing new material, interspersed with a handful of so-called Quick exercises. Working these—two-or-three-minute— exercises should help to master the material and provide a break from reading to do something more active.

On about two dozen occasions you will find indented paragraphs labeled Remark, where we felt the need to discuss more mathematical details or background material. These remarks can be skipped without loss of continuity; in most cases they require a bit more mathematical maturity. Whenever persons are introduced in examples we have determined their sex by looking at the chapter number and applying the rule “He is odd, she is even.” Solutions to the quick exercises are found in the second to last section of each chapter. The last section of each chapter is devoted to exercises, on average thirteen per chapter. For about half of the exercises, answers are given in Appendix C, and for half of these, full solutions in Appendix D.

Exercises with both a short answer and a full solution are marked with and those with only a short answer are marked with (when more appropriate, for example, in “Show that . . . ” exercises, the short answer provides a hint to the key step). Typically, the section starts with some easy exercises and the order of the material in the chapter is more or less respected. More challenging exercises are found at the end. Much of the material in this book would benefit from illustration with a computer using statistical software. A complete course should also involve computer exercises. Topics like simulation, the law of large numbers, the central limit theorem, and the bootstrap loudly call for this kind of experience.

Meet the Authors

Robert Dueck, Red River College

Robert Dueck received his B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada, and worked for several years as a design engineer at Motorola Canada in Toronto. He began teaching in 1986, specializing in digital and microcomputer subjects in the Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology programs at Seneca College in Toronto. His first book, Fundamentals of Digital Electronics, was published in 1994, and he has written several additional textbooks. He now teaches digital electronics and related courses at Red River College in Winnipeg. Mr. Dueck is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba (APEGM) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He served as chair of the Winnipeg Section of IEEE in 2002 and was branch counselor of the Red River College Student Branch from 1997-2006.

Overview:

PREFACE:

This text is devoted to the study of single and multi-variable calculus. While applications from the sciences, engineering, and economics are often used to motivate or illustrate mathematical ideas, the emphasis is on the three basic concepts of calculus: limit, derivative, and integral.
This edition is the result of a collaborative effort with S.L. Salas, who scrutinized every sentence for possible improvement in precision and readability. His gift for writing and his uncompromising standards of mathematical accuracy and clarity illuminate the beauty of the subject while increasing its accessibility to students. It has been a pleasure for me to work with him.

FEATURES OF THE TENTH EDITION

Precision and Clarity

The emphasis is on mathematical exposition; the topics are treated in a clear and understandable manner. Mathematical statements are careful and precise; the basic concepts and important points are not obscured by excess verbiage.

Balance of Theory and Applications

Problems drawn from the physical sciences are often used to introduce basic concepts in calculus. In turn, the concepts and methods of calculus are applied to a variety of problems in the sciences, engineering, business, and the social sciences through text examples and exercises. Because the presentation is flexible, instructors can vary the balance of theory and applications according to the needs of their students.

Accessibility

This text is designed to be completely accessible to the beginning calculus student without sacrificing appropriate mathematical rigor. The important theorems are explained and proved, and the mathematical techniques are justified. These may be covered or omitted according to the theoretical level desired in the course.

Visualization

The importance of visualization cannot be over-emphasized in developing students understanding of mathematical concepts. For that reason, over 1200 illustrations accompany the text examples and exercise sets.

Technology

The technology component of the text has been strengthened by revising existing exercises and by developing new exercises.Well over half of the exercise sets have problems requiring either a graphing utility or a computer algebra system (CAS). Technology exercises are designed to illustrate or expand upon the material developed within the sections.

Projects

Projects with an emphasis on problem solving offer students the opportunity to investigate a variety of special topics that supplement the text material. The projects typically require an approach that involves both theory and applications, including the use of technology. Many of the projects are suitable for group-learning activities.

Early Coverage of Differential Equations

Differential equations are formally introduced in Chapter 7 in connection with applications to exponential growth and decay. First-order linear equations, separable equations, and second linear equations with constant coefficients, plus a variety of applications, are treated in a separate chapter immediately following the techniques of integration material in Chapter 8.

CHANGES IN CONTENT AND ORGANIZATION

In our effort to produce an even more effective text, we consulted with the users of the Ninth Edition and with other calculus instructors. Our primary goals in preparing the Tenth Edition were the following:

1. Improve the exposition. As noted above, every topic has been examined for possible improvement in the clarity and accuracy of its presentation. Essentially every section in the text underwent some revision; a number of sections and subsections were completely rewritten.

2. Improve the illustrative examples. Many of the existing examples have been modified to enhance students’ understanding of the material. New examples have been added to sections that were rewritten or substantially revised.

3. Revise the exercise sets. Every exercise set was examined for balance between drill problems, mid-level problems, and more challenging applications and conceptual problems. In many instances, the number of routine problems was reduced and new mid-level to challenging problems were added.

Specific changes made to achieve these goals and meet the needs of today’s students and instructors include:

Comprehensive Chapter-End Review Exercise Sets

The Skill Mastery Review Exercise Sets introduced in the Ninth Edition have been expanded into chapter-end exercise sets. Each chapter concludes with a comprehensive set of problems designed to test and to re-enforce students’ understanding of basic concepts and methods developed within the chapter. These review exercise sets average over 50 problems per set.

Precalculus Review (Chapter 1)

The content of this chapter—inequalities, basic analytic geometry, the function concept and the elementary functions—is unchanged. However, much of the material has been rewritten and simplified.

Limits (Chapter 2)

The approach to limits is unchanged, but many of the explanations have been revised. The illustrative examples throughout the chapter have been modified, and new examples have been added.

Differentiation and Applications (Chapters 3 and 4)

There are some significant changes in the organization of this material. Realizing that our treatments of linear motion, rates of change per unit time, and the Newton-Raphson method depended on an understanding of increasing/decreasing functions and the concavity of graphs, we moved these topics from Chapter 3 (the derivative) to Chapter 4 (applications of the derivative). Thus, Chapter 3 is now a shorter chapter which focuses solely on the derivative and the processes of differentiation, and Chapter 4 is expanded to encompass all of the standard applications of the derivative-curve-sketching, optimization, linear motion, rates of change, and approximation. As in all previous editions, Chapter 4 begins with the mean-value theorem as the theoretical basis for all the applications.

Integration and Applications (Chapters 5 and 6)

In a brief introductory section, area and distance are used to motivate the definite integral in Chapter 5. While the definition of the definite integral is based on upper and lower sums, the connection with Riemann sums is also given. Explanations, examples, and exercises throughout Chapters 5 and 6 have been modified, but the content and organization remain as in the Ninth Edition.

The Transcendental Functions, Techniques of Integration (Chapters 7 and 8)

The coverage of the inverse trigonometric functions (Chapter 7) has been reduced slightly. The treatment of powers of the trigonometric functions (Chapter 8) has been completely rewritten. The optional sections on first-order linear differential equations and separable differential equations have been moved to Chapter 9, the new chapter on differential equations.

Some Differential Equations (Chapter 9)

This new chapter is a brief introduction to differential equations and their applications. In addition to the coverage of first-order linear equations and separable equations noted above, we have moved the section on second-order linear homogeneous equations with constant coefficients from the Ninth Edition’s Chapter 18 to this chapter.

Sequences and Series (Chapters 11 and 12)

Efforts were made to reduce the overall length of these chapters through rewriting and eliminating peripheral material. Eliminating extraneous problems reduced several exercise sets. Some notations and terminology have been modified to be consistent with common usage.

Vectors and Vector Calculus (Chapters 13 and 14)

The introduction to vectors in three-dimensional space has been completely rewritten and reduced from two sections to one. The parallel discussion of vectors in two and three-dimensional space has been eliminated—the primary focus is on three dimensional space. The treatments of the dot product, the cross product, lines and planes in Chapter 13, and vector calculus in Chapter 14 are unchanged.

Functions of Several Variables, Gradients, Extreme Values

(Chapters 15 and 16); Multiple Integrals, Line and Surface Integrals(Chapters 16 and 17)

The basic content and organization of the material in these four chapters remain as in the ninth edition. Improvements have been made in the exposition, examples, illustrations, and exercises.

Differential Equations (Chapter 19)

This chapter continues the study of differential equations begun in Chapter 9. The sections on Bernoulli, homogeneous and exact equations have been rewritten, and elementary numerical methods are now covered in a separate section. The section on second-order linear non-homogeneous equations picks up from the treatment of linear homogeneous equations in the new Chapter 9. The applications section—vibrating mechanical systems—is unchanged.

This text, like its previous fourth editions, is an introduction to communication systems written at a level appropriate for advanced undergraduates and first-year graduate students in electrical or computer engineering.

An initial study of signal transmission and the inherent limitations of physical systems establishes unifying concepts of communication. Attention is then given to analog communication systems, random signals and noise, digital systems, and information theory.

Mathematical techniques and models necessarily play an important role throughout the book, but always in the engineering context as means to an end. PREFACE:

This book is the second edition of a text designed for undergraduate courses in signals and systems. While such courses are frequently found in electrical engineering curricula, the concepts and techniques that form the core of the subject are of fundamental importance in all engineering disciplines. In fact, the scope of potential and actual applications of the methods of signal and system analysis continues to expand as engineers are confronted with new challenges involving the synthesis or analysis of complex processes. For these reasons we feel that a course· in signals and systems not only is an essential element in an engineering program but also can be one of the most rewarding, exciting, and useful courses that engineering students take during their undergraduate education.Our treatment of the subject of signals and systems in this second edition maintains the same general philosophy as in the first edition but with significant rewriting, restructuring,and additions. These changes are designed to help both the instructor in presenting the subject material and the student in mastering it. In the preface to the first edition we stated that our overall approach to signals and systems had been guided by the continuing developments in technologies for signal and system design and implementation, which made it increasingly important for a student to have equal familiarity with techniques suitable for analyzing and synthesizing both continuous-time and discrete-time systems. As we write the preface to this second edition, that observation and guiding principle are even more true than before. Thus, while students studying signals and systems should certainly have a solid foundation in disciplines based on the laws of physics, they must also have a firm grounding in the use of computers for the analysis of phenomena and the implementation of systems and algorithms. As a consequence, engineering curricula now reflect a blend of subjects, some involving continuous-time models and others focusing on the use of computer and discrete representations. For these reasons, signals and systems courses that bring discrete-time and continuous-time concepts together in a unified way play an increasingly important role in the education of engineering students and in their preparation for current and future developments in their chosen fields.It is with these goals in mind that we have structured this book to develop in parallel the methods of analysis for continuous-time and discrete-time signals and systems. This approach also offers a distinct and extremely important pedagogical advantage. Specifically,we are able to draw on the similarities between continuous- and discrete-time method sin order to share insights and intuition developed in each domain. Similarly, we can exploit the differences between them to sharpen an understanding of the distinct properties of each.In organizing the material both originally and now in the second edition, we have also considered it essential to introduce the student to some of the important uses of the basic methods that are developed in the book. Not only does this provide the student with an appreciation for the range of applications of the techniques being learned and for directions for further study, but it also helps to deepen understanding of the subject. To achieve this goal we include introductory treatments on the subjects of filtering, communications, sampling, discrete-time processing of continuous-time signals, and feedback. In fact, in one of the major changes in this second edition, we have introduced the concept of frequency-domain filtering very early in our treatment of Fourier analysis in order to provide both motivation for and insight into this very important topic. In addition, we have again included an up-to-date bibliography at the end of the book in order to assist the student who is interested in pursuing additional and more advanced studies of the method sand applications of signal and system analysis.The organization of the book reflects our conviction that full mastery of a subject of this nature cannot be accomplished without a significant amount of practice in using and applying the tools that are developed. Consequently, in the second edition we have significantly increased the number of worked examples within each chapter. We have also enhanced one of the key assets of the first edition, namely the end-of-chapter homework problems. As in the first edition, we have included a substantial number of problems,totaling more than 600 in number. A majority of the problems included here are new and thus provide additional flexibility for the instructor in preparing homework assignments.In addition, in order to enhance the utility of the problems for both the student and the instructor we have made a number of other changes to the organization and presentation of the problems. In particular, we have organized the problems in each chapter under several specific headings, each of which spans the material ip the entire chapter but with a different objective. The first two sections of problems in each chapter emphasize the mechanics o fusing the basic concepts and methods presented in the chapter. For the first of these two sections, which has the heading Basic Problems with Answers, we have also provided answers (but not solutions) at the end of the book. These answers provide a simple and immediate way for the student to check his or her understanding of the material. The problems in this first section are generally appropriate for inclusion in homework sets.Also, in order to give the instructor additional flexibility in assigning homework problems,we have provided a second section of Basic Problems for which answers have not been included. A third section of problems in each chapter, organized under the heading of Advanced Problems, is oriented toward exploring and elaborating upon the foundations and practical implications of the material in the text. These problems often involve mathematical derivations and more sophisticated use of the concepts and methods presented in the chapter. Some chapters also include ' a section of Extension Problems which involve extensions of material presented in the chapter and/or involve the use of knowledge from applications that are outside the scope of the main text (such as advanced circuits or mechanical systems). The overall variety and quantity of problems in each chapter will hopefully provide students with the means to develop their understanding of the material and instructors with considerable flexibility in putting together homework sets that are tailored to the specific needs of their students. A solutions manual is also available to instructors through the publisher.Another significant additional enhancement to this second edition is the availability of the companion book Explorations in Signals and Systems Using MATIAB by Buck,Daniel, and Singer. This book contains MATLAB@-based computer exercises for each topic in the text, and should be of great assistance to both instructor and student.Students using this book are assumed to have a basic background in calculus as well as some experience in manipulating complex numbers and some exposure to differential equations. With this background, the book is self-contained. In particular, no prior experience with system analysis, convolution, Fourier analysis, or Laplace and z-transforms is assumed. Prior to learning the subject of signals and systems most students will have had a course such as basic circuit theory for electrical engineers or fundamentals of dynamics for mechanical engineers. Such subjects touch on some of the basic ideas that are developed more fully in this text. This background can clearly be of great value to students in providing additional perspective as they proceed through the book The Foreword, which follows this preface, is written to offer the reader motivation and perspective for the subject of signals and systems in general and our treatment of it in particular. We begin Chapter 1 by introducing some of the elementary ideas related to the mathematical representation of signals and systems. In particular we discuss transformations(such as time shifts and scaling) of the independent variable-of a signal. We also introduce some of the most important and basic continuous-time and discrete-time signals, namely real and complex exponential and the continuous-time and discrete-time unit step and unit impulse. Chapter 1 also introduces block diagram representations of interconnections of systems and discusses several basic system properties such as causality,linearity and time-invariance. In Chapter 2 we build on these last two properties, together with the sifting property of unit impulses to develop the convolution -sum representation for discrete-time linear, time-invariant (LTI) systems and the convolution integral representation for continuous-time LTI systems. In this treatment we use the intuition gained from our development of the discrete-time case as an aid in deriving and understanding its continuous-time counterpart. We then turn to a discussion of causal, LTI systems characterized by linear constant-coefficient differential and difference equations. In this introductory discussion we review the basic ideas involved in solving linear differential equations(to which most students will have had some previous exposure) and we also provide a discussion of analogous methods for linear difference equations. However, the primary focus of our development in Chapter 2 is not on methods of solution, since more convenient approaches are developed later using transform methods. Instead, in this first look, our intentions to provide the student with some appreciation for these extremely important classes of systems, which will be encountered often in subsequent chapters. Finally, Chapter 2 concludes with a brief discussion of singularity functions-steps, impulses, doublets, and so forth-in the context of their role in the description and analysis of continuous-time LTI systems. In particular, we stress the interpretation of these signals in terms of how they are defined under convolution- that is, in terms of the responses of LTI systems to these idealized signals.Chapters 3 through 6 present a thorough and self-contained development of the ·methods of Fourier analysis in both continuous and discrete time and together represent the most significant reorganization and revision in the second edition. In particular, as we indicated previously, we have introduced the concept of frequency-domain filtering at a much earlier point in the development in order to provide motivation for and a concrete application of the Fourier methods being developed. As in the first edition, we begin the discussions in Chapter 3 by emphasizing and illustrating the two fundamental reasons for the important role Fourier analysis plays in the study of signals and systems in both continuous and discrete time: (1) extremely broad classes of signals can be represented as weighted sums or integrals of complex exponentials; and (2) the response of an LTI system to a complex exponential input is the same exponential multiplied by a complex number characteristic of the system. However, in contrast to the first edition, the focus of attention in Chapter 3 is on Fourier series representations for periodic signals in both continuous time and discrete time. In this way we not only introduce and examine many of the properties of Fourier .representations without the additional mathematical generalization required to obtain the Fourier transform for aperiodic signals, but we also can introduce the application to filtering at a very early stage in the development. In particular, taking advantage of the fact that complex exponentials are eigen-functions of LTI systems,we introduce the frequency response of an LTI system and use it to discuss the concept of frequency-selective filtering, to introduce ideal filters, and to give several examples of non ideal filters described by differential and difference equations. In this way, with a minimum of mathematical preliminaries, we provide the student with a deeper appreciation for what a Fourier representation means and why it is such a useful construct.· Chapters 4 and 5 then build on the foundation provided by Chapter 3 as we develop first the continuous-time Fourier transform in Chapter 4 and, in a parallel fashion, the discrete-time Fourier transform in Chapter 5. In both chapters we derive the Fourier transform representation of an aperiodic signal as the limit of the Fourier series for a signal whose period becomes arbitrarily large. This perspective emphasizes the close relationship between Fourier series and transforms, which we develop further in subsequent sections and which allows us to transfer the intuition developed for Fourier series in Chapter 3 to the more general context of Fourier transforms. In both chapters we have included a discussion of the many important properties of Fourier transforms, with special emphasis placed on the convolution and multiplication properties. In particular, the convolution property allows us to take a second look at the topic of frequency-selective filtering, while the multiplication property serves as the starting point for our treatment of sampling and modulation in later chapters. Finally, in the last sections in Chapters 4 and 5 we use transform methods to determine the frequency responses of LTI systems described by differential and difference equations and to provide several examples illustrating how Fourier transforms can be used to compute the responses for such systems. To supplement these discussions(and later treatments of Laplace and z-transforms) we have again included an Appendix at the end of the book that contains a description of the method of partial fraction expansion.Our treatment of Fourier analysis in these two chapters is characteristic of the parallel treatment we have developed. Specifically, in our discussion in Chapter 5, we are able to build on much of the insight developed in Chapter 4 for the continuous-time case,and toward the end of Chapter 5 we emphasize the complete duality in continuous-time and discrete-time Fourier representations. In addition, we bring the special nature of each domain into sharper focus by contrasting the differences between continuous- and discrete time Fourier analysis.As those familiar with the first edition will note, the lengths and scopes of Chapters 4 and 5 in the second edition are considerably smaller than their first edition counterparts.This is due not only to the fact that Fourier series are now dealt with in a separate chapter but also to our moving several topics into Chapter 6. The result, we believe, has several significant benefits. First, the presentation in three shorter chapters of the basic concepts and results of Fourier analysis, together with the introduction of the concept of frequency selective filtering, should help the student in organizing his or her understanding of this material and in developing some intuition about the frequency domain and appreciation for its potential applications. Then, with Chapters 3-5 as a foundation, we can engage in a more detailed look at a number of important topics and applications. In Chapter 6 we take a deeper look at both the time- and frequency-domain characteristics of LTI systems.For example, we introduce magnitude-phase and Bode plot representations for frequency responses and discuss the effect of frequency response phase on the time domain characteristics of the output of an LTI system. In addition, we examine the time- and frequency domain behavior of ideal and non ideal filters and the trade offs between these that must bead dressed in practice. We also take a careful look at first- and second-order systems and their roles as basic building blocks for more complex system synthesis and analysis in both continuous and discrete time. Finally, we discuss several other more complex examples of filters in both continuous and discrete time. These examples together with the numerous other aspects of filtering explored in the problems at the end of the chapter provide the student with some appreciation for the richness and flavor of this important subject.While each of the topics in Chapter 6 was present in the first edition, we believe that by reorganizing and collecting them in a separate chapter following the basic development of Fourier analysis, we have both simplified the introduction of this important topic in Chapters 3-5 and presented in Chapter 6 a considerably more cohesive picture of time and frequency-domain issues.In response to suggestions and preferences expressed by many users of the first edition we have modified notation in the discussion of Fourier transforms to be more consistent with notation most typically used for continuous-time and discrete-time Fourier transforms. Specifically, beginning with Chapter 3 we now denote the continuous-time Fourier transform as X(jw) and the discrete-time Fourier transform as X(ejw). As with all options with notation, there is not a unique best choice for the notation for Fourier transforms.However, it is our feeling, and that of many of our colleagues, that the notation used in this edition represents the preferable choice.Our treatment of sampling in Chapter 7 is concerned primarily with the sampling theorem and its implications. However, to place this subject in perspective we begin by discussing the general concepts of representing a continuous-time signal in terms of its samples and the reconstruction of signals using interpolation. After using frequency-domain methods to derive the sampling theorem, we consider both the frequency and time domains to provide intuition concerning the phenomenon of aliasing resulting from under sampling. One of the very important uses of sampling 'is in the discrete-time processing of continuous-time signals, a topic that we explore at some length in this chapter. Following this, we tum to the sampling of discrete-time signals. The basic result underlying discrete time sampling is developed in a manner that parallels that used in continuous time, and the applications of this result to problems of decimation and interpolation are described. Again a variety of other applications, in both continuous and discrete time, are addressed in the problems. Once again the reader acquainted with our first edition will note a change, in this case involving the reversal in the order of the presentation of sampling and communications. We have chosen to place sampling before communications in the second edition both because we can call on simple intuition to motivate and describe the processes of sampling and reconstruction from samples and also because this order of presentation then allows us in Chapter 8 to talk more easily about forms of communication systems that are closely related to sampling or rely fundamentally on using a sampled version of the signal to be transmitted.Our treatment of communications in Chapter 8 includes an in -depth discussion of continuous-time sinusoidal amplitude modulation (AM), which begins with the straightforward application of the multiplication property to describe the effect of sinusoidal AM in the frequency domain and to suggest how the original modulating signal can be recovered. Following this, we develop a number of additional issues and applications related to sinusoidal modulation, including frequency-division multiplexing and single-sideband modulation. Many other examples and applications are described in the problems. Several additional topics are covered in Chapter 8. The first of these is amplitude modulation of a pulse train and time-division multiplexing, which has a close connection to the ,topic of sampling in Chapter 7. Indeed we make this tie even more explicit and provide a look into the important field ·of digital communications by introducing and briefly describing the topics of pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM) and inter symbol interference. Finally, our discussion of frequency modulation (FM) provides the reader with a look at a nonlinear modulation problem. Although the analysis of FM systems is not as straightforward as for the AM case, our introductory treatment indicates how frequency-domain methods can be used to gain a significant amount of insight into the characteristics of FM signals and systems. Through these discussions and the many other aspects of modulation and communications explored in the problems in this chapter we believe that the student can gain an appreciation both for the richness of the field of communications and for the central role that the tools of signals and systems analysis play in it. Chapters 9 and 10 treat the Laplace and z-transforms, respectively. For the most part, we focus on the bilateral versions of these transforms, although in the last section of each chapter we discuss unilateral transforms and their use in solving differential and difference equations with nonzero initial conditions. Both chapters include discussions on: the close relationship between these transforms and Fourier transforms; the class of rational transforms and their representation in terms of poles and zeros; the region of convergence of a Laplace or z-transform and its relationship to properties of the signal with which it is associated; inverse transforms using partial fraction expansion; the geometric evaluation of system functions and frequency responses from pole-zero plots; and basic transform properties. In addition, in each chapter we examine the properties and uses of system functions for LTI systems. Included in these discussions are the determination of system functions for systems characterized by differential and difference equations; the use of system function algebra for interconnections of LTI systems; and the construction of cascade, parallel- and direct-form block-diagram representations for systems with rational system functions. The tools of Laplace and z-transforms form the basis for our examination of linear feedback systems in Chapter 11. We begin this chapter by describing a number of the important uses and properties of feedback systems, including stabilizing unstable systems, designing tracking systems, and reducing system sensitivity. In subsequent sections we use the tools that we have developed in previous chapters to examine three topics that are of importance for both continuous-time and discrete-time feedback systems. These are root locus analysis, Nyquist plots and the Nyquist criterion, and log-magnitude/phase plots and the concepts of phase and gain margins for stable feedback systems. The subject of signals and systems is an extraordinarily rich one, and a variety of approaches can be taken in designing an introductory course. It was our intention with the first edition and again with this second edition to provide instructors with a great deal of flexibility in structuring their presentations of the subject. To obtain this flexibility and to maximize the usefulness of this book for instructors, we have chosen to present thorough, in-depth treatments of a cohesive set of topics that forms the core of most introductory courses on signals and systems. In achieving this depth we have of necessity omitted introductions to topics such as descriptions of random signals and state space models that are sometimes included in first courses on signals and systems. Traditionally, at many schools, such topics are not included in introductory courses but rather are developed in more depth in follow-on undergraduate courses or in courses explicitly devoted to their investigation. Although we have not included an introduction to state space in the book, instructors-of introductory courses can easily incorporate it into the treatments of differential and difference equations that can be found throughout the book. In particular, the discussions in Chapters 9 and 10 on block diagram representations for systems with rational system functions and on unilateral transforms and their use in solving differential and difference equations with initial conditions form natural points of departure for the discussions of state-space representations. A typical one-semester course at the sophomore-junior level using this book would cover Chapters 1-5 in reasonable depth (although various topics in each chapter are easily omitted at the discretion of the instructor) with selected topics chosen from the remaining chapters. For example, one possibility is to present several of the basic topics in Chapters 6-8 together with a treatment of Laplace and z-transforms and perhaps a brief introduction to the use of system function concepts to analyze feedback systems. A variety of alternate formats are possible, including one that incorporates an introduction to state space or one in which more focus is placed on continuous-time systems by de-emphasizing Chapters 5 and 10 and the discrete-time topics in Chapters 3, 7, 8, and 11. In addition to these course formats this book can be used as the basic text for a thorough, two-semester sequence on linear systems. Alternatively, the portions of the book not used in a first course on signals and systems can, together with other sources, form the basis for a subsequent course. For example, much of the material in this book forms a direct bridge to subjects such as state space analysis, control systems, digital signal processing, communications and statistical signal processing: Consequently, a follow-on course can be constructed that uses some of the topics in this book together with supplementary material in order to provide an introduction to one or more of these advanced subjects. In fact, a new course following this model has been developed at MIT and has proven not only to be a popular course among our students but also a crucial component of our signals and systems curriculum. As it was with the first edition, in the process of writing this book we have been fortunate to have received assistance, suggestions, and support from numerous colleagues, students and friends. The ideas and perspectives that form the heart of this book have continued to evolve as a result of our own experiences in teaching signals and systems and the influences of the many colleagues and students with whom we have worked. Preface:

Here are my online notes for my differential equations course that I teach here at Lamar University. Despite the fact that these are my “class notes”, they should be accessible to anyone wanting to learn how to solve differential equations or needing a refresher on differential equations. I’ve tried to make these notes as self contained as possible and so all the information needed to read through them is either from a Calculus or Algebra class or contained in other sections of the notes. A couple of warnings to my students who may be here to get a copy of what happened on a day that you missed.

1. Because I wanted to make this a fairly complete set of notes for anyone wanting to learn differential equations I have included some material that I do not usually have time to cover in class and because this changes from semester to semester it is not noted here. You will need to find one of your fellow class mates to see if there is something in these notes that wasn’t covered in class.

2. In general I try to work problems in class that are different from my notes. However, with Differential Equation many of the problems are difficult to make up on the spur of the moment and so in this class my class work will follow these notes fairly close as far as worked problems go. With that being said I will, on occasion, work problems off the top of my head when I can to provide more examples than just those in my notes. Also, I often don’t have time in class to work all of the problems in the notes and so you will find that some sections contain problems that weren’t worked in class due to time restrictions.

3. Sometimes questions in class will lead down paths that are not covered here. I try to anticipate as many of the questions as possible in writing these up, but the reality is that I can’t anticipate all the questions. Sometimes a very good question gets asked in class that leads to insights that I’ve not included here. You should always talk to someone who was in class on the day you missed and compare these notes to their notes and see what the differences are.

4. This is somewhat related to the previous three items, but is important enough to merit its own item. THESE NOTES ARE NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR ATTENDING CLASS!! Using these notes as a substitute for class is liable to get you in trouble. As already noted not everything in these notes is covered in class and often material or insights not in these notes is covered in class.

Introduction:

There isn’t really a whole lot to this chapter it is mainly here so we can get some basic definitions and concepts out of the way. Most of the definitions and concepts introduced here can be introduced without any real knowledge of how to solve differential equations. Most of them are terms that we’ll use throughout a class so getting them out of the way right at the beginning is a good idea.

During an actual class I tend to hold off on a couple of the definitions and introduce them at a later point when we actually start solving differential equations. The reason for this is mostly a time issue. In this class time is usually at a premium and some of the definitions/concepts require a differential equation and/or its solution so I use the first couple differential equations that we will solve to introduce the definition or concept.

Methodology of Economics:

Economics is a social science that studies individuals and organizations engaged in the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. The goal is to predict economic occurrences and to develop policies that might prevent or correct such problems as unemployment, inflation, or waste in the economy. Economics is subdivided into macroeconomics and microeconomics. Macroeconomics studies aggregate output, employment, and the general price level. Microeconom-ics studies the economic behavior of individual decision makers such as consumers, resource owners, and business firms. The discipline of economics has developed principles, theories, and models that isolate the most important determinants of economic events. In constructing a model, economists make assumptions to eliminate unnecessary detail to reduce the complexity of economic behavior. Once modeled, economic behavior may be presented as a relationship between dependent and independent variables. The behavior being explained is the dependent variable; the economic events explaining that behavior arethe independent variables. The dependent variable may be presented as depending upon one independent variable, with the influence of the other independent variables held constant (the ceteris paribus assumption). An economic model will also specify whether the dependent and independent variables are positively or negatively related, i.e., moving in the same or opposite directions.

In spite of the numerous textbooks on circuit analysis available in the market, students often find the course difficult to learn. The main objective of this book is to present circuit analysis in a manner that is clearer, more interesting, and easier to understand than earlier texts. • A course in circuit analysis is perhaps the first exposure students have to electrical engineering.We have included several features to help students feel at home with the subject. Each chapter opens with either a historical profile of some electrical engineering pioneers to be mentioned in the chapter or a career discussion on a subdiscipline of electrical engineering. An introduction links the chapter with the previous chapters and states the chapter’s objectives. The chapter ends with a summary of the key points and formulas.

• All principles are presented in a lucid, logical, step-by-step manner. We try to avoid wordiness and superfluous detail that could hide concepts and impede understanding the material.

• Important formulas are boxed as a means of helping students sort what is essential from what is not; and to ensure that students clearly get the gist of the matter, key terms are defined and highlighted.

• Marginal notes are used as a pedagogical aid. They serve multiple uses—hints, cross-references, more exposition, warnings, reminders, common mistakes, and problem-solving insights.

• Thoroughly worked examples are liberally given at the end of every section. The examples are regarded as part of the text and are explained clearly, without asking the reader to fill in missing steps. Thoroughly worked examples give students a good understanding of the solution and the confidence to solve problems themselves. Some of the problems are solved in two or three ways to facilitate an understanding and comparison of different approaches.

• To give students practice opportunity, each illustrative example is immediately followed by a practice problem with the answer. The students can follow the example step-by-step to solve the practice problem without flipping pages or searching the end of the book for answers. The practice problem is also intended to test students’ understanding of the preceding example. It will reinforce their grasp of the material before moving to the next section.

• In recognition of ABET’s requirement on integrating computer tools, the use of PSpice is encouraged in a student-friendly manner. Since the Windows version of PSpice is becoming popular, it is used instead of the MS-DOS version. PSpice is covered early so that students can use it throughout the text. Appendix D serves as a tutorial on PSpice for Windows.

• The operational amplifier (op amp) as a basic element is introduced early in the text.

• To ease the transition between the circuit course and signals/systems courses, Fourier and Laplace transforms are covered lucidly and thoroughly.

• The last section in each chapter is devoted to applications of the concepts covered in the chapter. Each chapter has at least one or two practical problems or devices. This helps students apply the concepts to real-life situations.

• Ten multiple-choice review questions are provided at the end of each chapter, with answers. These are intended to cover the little “tricks” that the examples and end-of-chapter problems may not cover. They serve as a self-test device and help students determine how well they have mastered the chapter.

Organization:

This book was written for a two-semester or three-semester course in linear circuit analysis. The book may also be used for a one-semester course by a proper selection of chapters and sections. It is broadly divided into three parts.

• Part 1, consisting of Chapters 1 to 8, is devoted to dc circuits. It covers the fundamental laws and theorems, circuit techniques, passive and active elements.

• Part 2, consisting of Chapters 9 to 14, deals with ac circuits. It introduces phasors, sinusoidal steadystate analysis, ac power, rms values, three-phase systems, and frequency response.

• Part 3, consisting of Chapters 15 to 18, is devoted to advanced techniques for network analysis. It provides a solid introduction to the Laplace transform, Fourier series, the Fourier transform, and two-port network analysis.

INTRODUCTION:

This text contains a comprehensive discussion on continuous and discrete time signals and systems

with many MATLAB® and several Simulink® examples. It is written for junior and senior electrical and computer engineering students, and for self−study by working professionals. The prerequisites are a basic course in differential and integral calculus, and basic electric circuit theory. This book can be used in a two−quarter, or one semester course. This author has taught the subject material for many years and was able to cover all material in 16 weeks, with 2½ lecture hours per week.

The elementary signals are reviewed in Chapter 1, and several examples are given.The purpose of this chapter is to enable the reader to express any waveform in terms of the unit step function and subsequently the derivation of the Laplace transform of it. Chapters 2 through 4 are devoted to Laplace transformation and circuit analysis using this transform. Chapter 5 is an introduction to state−space and contains many illustrative examples. Chapter 6 discusses the impulse response. Chapters 7 and 8 are devoted to Fourier series and transform respectively. Chapter 9 introduces discrete−time signals and the Z transform. Considerable time was spent on Chapter 10 to present the Discrete Fourier transform and FFT with the simplest possible explanations. Chapter 11 contains a thorough discussion to analog and digital filters analysis and design procedures. As mentioned above, Appendix A is an introduction to MATLAB. Appendix B is an introduction to Simulink, Appendix C contains a review of complex numbers, Appendix D is an introduction to matrix theory, Appendix E contains a comprehensive discussion on window functions, Appendix F describes the cross correlation and autocorrelation functions, and Appendix G presents an example of a nonlinear system and derives its describing function.

New to the Fourth Edition

The most notable change is the inclusion of Appendix E on window functions. The plots were generated generated with the latest revisions of the MATLAB® R2008a edition. INTRODUCTION:

This text contains a comprehensive discussion on continuous and discrete time signals and systems with many MATLAB® and several Simulink® examples. It is written for junior and senior electrical and computer engineering students, and for self−study by working professionals. The prerequisites are a basic course in differential and integral calculus, and basic electric circuit theory.

The elementary signals are reviewed in Chapter 1, and several examples are given. The purpose of this chapter is to enable the reader to express any waveform in terms of the unit step function, and subsequently the derivation of the Laplace transform of it. Chapters 2 through 4 are devoted to Laplace transformation and circuit analysis using this transform. Chapter 5 is an introduction to state−space and contains many illustrative examples. This is an extensive revision of the first edition. The most notable change is the inclusion of the solutions to all exercises at the end of each chapter. It is in response to many readers who expressed a desire to obtain the solutions in order to check their solutions to those of the author and thereby enhancing their knowledge. Another reason is that this text is written also for self− study by practicing engineers who need a review before taking more advanced courses such as digital image processing. Another major change is the addition of a rather comprehensive summary at the end of each chapter. Hopefully, this will be a valuable aid to instructors for preparation of view foils for presenting the material to their class.

New to the Third Edition

The most notable change is the inclusion of Simulink modeling examples. The pages where they appear can be found in the Table of Contents section of this text. Another change is the improvement of the plots generated by the latest revisions of the MATLAB® Student Version, Release 14. INTRODUCTION:

This ninth edition of Digital Electronics: A Practical Approach with VHDL provides the fundamentals of digital circuitry to students in engineering and technology curricula. The digital circuits are introduced using fixed-function 7400 ICs and evolve into FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) programmed with VHDL (VHSIC Hardware Description Language). (Note: Those schools not wishing to develop logic using VHDL and FPGAs can completely skip those sections of the textbook without affecting the continuity of the remainder of the text, which describes logic design and implementation using 7400-series ICs.) Coverage begins with the basic logic gates used to perform arithmetic operations and proceeds through sequential logic and memory circuits used to interface to modern PCs. Professor Kleitz uses his vast experience of teaching electronics online and in class from his best-selling textbooks to know what it takes for an entry-level student to be brought up to speed in this emerging field. It was important to design this new textbook to present practical examples, be easy to read, and provide all of the information necessary for motivated students to teach themselves this new subject matter. This makes it ideal for learning in an online environment as well as from conventional inclass lectures.

Digital electronic ICs (integrated circuits) and FPGAs are the “brains” behind common microprocessor-based systems such as those found in automobiles, personal computers, and automated factory control systems. The most exciting recent development in this field is that students now have the choice to design, simulate, and implement their circuits using a programming language called VHDL instead of wiring individual gates and devices to achieve the required function. Each topic area in this text consistently follows a very specific sequence of steps,making the transition rom problem definition, to practical example, to logic IC implementation,to VHDL and FPGA mplementation. To accomplish this, the text first introduces the theory of operation of the digital logic and then implements the design in integrated circuit form (see Figure P–1). Once the fixed-function IC logic is thoroughly explained, the next step is to implement the design as a graphic design file and then to implement it using the VHDL hardware descriptive language, all within the free version of the Altera Quartus® II development software. Several examples are used to bolster the student’s understanding of the subject before moving on to system-level design and troubleshooting applications of the logic. This step-by-step method has proven over the years to be the most effective method to build the fundamental understanding of digital electronics before proceeding to implement the logic design in VHDL.

The Altera Quartus® II software is a free download that allows students to either graphically design their circuit by drawing the logic (using logic gates or 7400 macrofunctions) or use VHDL to define their logic. The design can then be simulated on a PC before using the same software to download the logic to an FPGA on one of the commercially available FPGA programmer boards, such as the Altera DE2 illustrated in this text.

New to the Ninth Edition:

The first eight editions were developed from an accumulation of 28 years of class notes. Teaching online from the eighth edition for the past 3 years has given me the opportunity to review several suggestions from my students and other faculty regarding such things as improving a circuit diagram, clarifying an explanation, and redesigning an application to make it easier to duplicate in lab.

More than 140 schools have adopted the eighth edition. To write the ninth edition, I have taken advantage of the comments from these schools as well as my own experience and market research to develop an even more practical and easier-to-learn-from textbook.

In addition to rewriting several of the examples and applications based on my classroom and online teaching experience, I have added the following material:

INTODUCTION:

This book is intended for an introductory course in digital logic design, which is a basic course in most electrical and computer engineering programs. A successful designer of digital logic circuits needs a good understanding of basic concepts and a firm grasp of computer-aided design (CAD) tools. The purpose of our book is to provide the desirable balance between teaching the basic concepts and practical application through CAD tools. To facilitate the learning process, the necessary CAD software is included as an integral part of the book package. The main goals of the book are (1) to teach students the fundamental concepts in classical manual digital design and (2) illustrate clearly the way in which digital circuits are designed today, using CAD tools. Even though modern designers no longer use manual techniques, except in rare circumstances, our motivation for teaching such techniques is to give students an intuitive feeling for how digital circuits operate. Also, the manual techniques provide an illustration of the types of manipulations performed by CAD tools,

giving students an appreciation of the benefits provided by design automation. • Throughout the chapters, there are extensive changes in the problem sections. Over 100 new problems have been added, and a significant number of changes have been made to the existing problems.

• A significant number of computer programs were all rerun and the descriptions updated to include the effects of using OrCAD version 16.3 and Multisim version 11.1. In addition, the introductory chapters are now assuming a broader understanding of computer methods, resulting in a revised introduction to the two programs.

• Throughout the text, photos and biographies of important contributors have been added. Included among these are Sidney Darlington, Walter Schottky, Harry Nyquist, Edwin Colpitts, and Ralph Hartley.

• New sections were added throughout the text. The coverage of the Darlington effect was totally rewritten and expanded to include detailed examination of the emitter-follower and collector gain configurations. The coverage of transistors now includes details on the cross-bar latch transistor and carbon nanotubes. The discussion of LEDs includes an expanded discussion of the materials employed, comparisons to today’s other lighting options, and examples of the products defining the future of this important semiconductor device. The data sheets commonly included in a text of this type are now discussed in detail to ensure a well-established link when the student enters the industrial community.

• Updated material appears throughout the text in the form of photos, artwork, data sheets, and so forth, to ensure that the devices included reflect the components available today with the characteristics that have changed so rapidly in recent years. In addition, the parameters associated with the content and all the example problems are more in line with the device characteristics available today. Some devices, no longer available or used very infrequently, were dropped to ensure proper emphasis on the current trends.

• There are a number of important organizational changes throughout the text to ensure the best sequence of coverage in the learning process. This is readily apparent in the early dc chapters on diodes and transistors, in the discussion of current gain in the ac chapters for BJTs and JFETs, in the Darlington section, and in the frequency response chapters. It is particularly obvious in Chapter 16 , where topics were dropped and the order of sections changed dramatically.
