Try "going green" when the opportunity arises.

With recent incentives from a handful of major insurance companies, you'll leave the earth a better place—and pay less for insurance, too!

Insurers Going Green

Recently, some insurance companies have turned their attention to greener products, rewarding discounts and lower-priced coverage to clients willing to make environmentally conscious decisions about the way they live.

By offering greener insurance products to protect property like hybrid cars and energy-efficient homes, more and more property and casualty insurers are jumping on the bandwagon in an effort to encourage planet-saving behavior in the long-term and money-saving options now.

Many insurers, like Travelers and Allstate, reward customers who purchase hybrid vehicles or upgrade to green-certified homes with a 5 to 10 percent discount. Others offer discounts or incentives to those who use environmentally friendly building materials, equip their home with windmill-generated electricity or outfit it with solar panels.

Some even offer a type of eco-friendly upgrade that allows clients to rebuild their homes greener than before following disaster, with packages that include Energy Star appliances and sustainable materials.

According to Bankrate.com, this option is available to customers of Fireman's Fund and Farmers Insurance as an addition, or endorsement, to their regular insurance policies, at a cost of only about $20 to $25 a year more than their standard insurance policies.

But why does your insurer care if you're concerned about the environment in the first place?

Studies show that policyholders who do their part to keep the air clean, conserve energy and use fewer natural resources also tend to drive less and be healthier, more mature and responsible—as well as less likely to file insurance claims on losses.

And, since buying and using greener products at home and on the road can cost significantly more than using standard counterparts, the type of person willing to live a green lifestyle is more willing to spend money up-front to reap a payoff over the long term.

Bottom line: Whether you're a tree-hugging environmentalist or simply an earth-loving conservationist, you're just the type of customer your insurer is looking for—and is willing to pay to retain.

Next time you purchase a car or home, think green.

Not only might you get tax breaks from the government and incentives from the dealer or lender; going green could also turn your pockets green over the life of your insurance policies!

This means fewer cars on the road and fewer harmful emissions and pollutants from vehicles. For insurance companies, it means a lower risk for accidents.

A pay-as-you-drive plan probably would offer substantial savings.

The economy is forcing many to make tough decisions about their household expenses -- and auto insurance is no exception. Car owners might cut coverage and cut corners to pay their bills. In fact, according to a recent survey by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), more than half of U.S. drivers have changed their insurance coverage or driving habits to save money within the past year.

Lifestyle changes

The NAIC surveyed about 1,000 American adults -- 53 percent of them made a choice, based on their financial circumstances, over the past year that will affect the cost of their car insurance. Some of the most common changes included:

Driving less: Nearly 40 percent of those surveyed drove less in the past year. They joined carpools, walked to work, biked more and used public transportation more frequently.
In addition to cutting down on fuel costs, such lifestyle changes can cut your premiums. Your premium is partly determined by how often you use your car. A long daily commute increases the chance you'll be in an accident, so your insurer will adjust your rate upward. Likewise, cutting down on your commute can lower your risk and premiums.

Some car insurance companies are taking this principle even further by offering pay-as-you-drive insurance. If you have this type of policy, your insurer might measure how many miles you drive and adjust your premium accordingly. Or you might purchase coverage in advance and renew it only after you've used a certain number of miles.

Canceling or reducing coverage: Roughly 20 percent of those surveyed said they had streamlined their coverage or canceled it altogether. This is a risky move -- and an illegal one in most states, if you're getting rid of your mandated liability coverage.
Even settling for bare-bones liability coverage required by your state is a risk. Auto insurance extras like uninsured motorist coverage, comprehensive coverage and collision coverage will raise your premium. But they can be invaluable if you're hit by an uninsured driver or if your car is wrecked or stolen.

It might be possible, however, to lower your costs by adjusting the comprehensive or collision portions of your policy. Progressive advises cutting these coverage types (or raising your deductible) if your car's worth starts nearing the amount you pay in premiums.

Trimming the fleet: About 20 percent of those surveyed said they had gotten rid of a car or traded one in for a less pricey model. Getting a car that's less expensive to replace, or getting a more practical car with lots of safety features, means less risk for your insurer -- and, possibly, lower premiums.
Those changes can be made deliberately in an effort to cut costs. Other life changes are out of your control but still could dramatically affect your car insurance rate.

Relocation: Whether downsizing to a smaller home, chasing a new job or moving in with family, many Americans are relocating because of financial hardship, according to the NAIC. Any change in Zip code is likely to affect auto insurance costs, particularly if you head to a different state.
Job change: A new job may mean a shorter (or longer) commute -- and lower (or higher) premiums. Or you might be able to share a commute with a spouse and go without an extra car if you work near each other.

Damaged credit: A job loss can mean that some bills don't get paid. Eventually, these unpaid bills will find their way into your credit report. According to the Federal Trade Commission, insurers have determined that lower credit scores are correlated with higher driving liability risks. In states where it's allowed, many car insurers use motorists' credit scores when calculating premiums for new coverage. Yet, according to the NAIC, more than a third of the drivers surveyed did not realize their credit histories influence their auto insurance costs.

As we face the challenges of aging, many of us begin needing help with daily activities we've performed all our lives. Simple tasks like eating, dressing, bathing and simply getting around can become much more difficult and steal our joy for living.

That's the importance of having the right insurance. If you or a loved one winds up needing care in your old age, there will be no need to hire costly professional help or rely on family and friends for your every need. Instead, with a long term care insurance policy in place, you'll have the funds you need to pay for at-home nursing care, adult day care, residential care or one of hundreds of other types of senior aid.

Save yourself and your family the hardship and embarrassment that can come with growing old. Research your options for elder care now, know what you could be up against later in life, and examine your options today.

The Benefits of Getting Insured Now
Statistics show that at least 70 percent of people over age 65 will require some long term care services at some point in their lives. And, contrary to what many believe, Medicare and private health insurance programs won't pay for the majority of services most people need.

Securing your future with LTC insurance guarantees you'll have the care you need when you need it most—with the dignity you deserve.

But the benefits insurance provides aren't just physical or financial; they're also psychological. Not being able to do for yourself is difficult enough; but being dependent on loved ones compounds the problem. In addition, family members may find themselves wondering how to take care of you over the long haul, especially when it becomes necessary for many months or years.

Instead of worrying what the future will bring, take control of your future now, before you actually need additional services. You'll contain costs, make the future brighter and smooth the transition into your golden years.

Understanding Cost
The cost of long term care insurance depends on three variables:

Where you live
The price of services in your area
How long you need care
Though rates vary, affordable prices are available all over the country through insurance companies that specialize in insurance for the aged. In fact, many specialty insurers like AARP offer policies with terms that fit most any budget.

Money-Saving Tip: The best way to curb costs overall is to buy while you're young. So don't let the rising cost of medical care impact your life in your later years. Request your free insurance quotes, find an affordable plan now, and get prepared for a long and healthy future.
FREE Car Insurance quote.
Most of us live life day to day, never expecting sudden change to affect our lives. But it does; and when change comes, we must be prepared to face it head-on.

As a loving, caring person, you want to provide for those you love in a special way. Life insurance provides the means to do so now, while you're still living and vital. By preparing for the future with a policy that offers your family the financial assistance they need to carry on in your absence, it's one of the best ways to leave a piece of yourself behind.

Depending on your age and general state of health, finding the coverage you need is relatively easy. And here's a secret many people aren't aware of: Providers are waiting in the wings to offer the most competitive quotes. All it takes is a little knowledge; the help of an informed, professional agent; and one quick application to get educated, empowered and insured.

Basics You Should Know
Insurers sell several different types of policies, each designed to meet specific needs and goals. If you'd like to leave money so your family can pay your final expenses or you want to provide them with savings to spend as they see fit, one of the following types of plans should be just what you need:

Term: You purchase coverage for a specific period and, if you die during that time, your beneficiary receives the policy's value. Includes no investment component.
Permanent or Whole Life: Designed to cover you for your whole life, not just a set period of time. Offers the flexibility and freedom to change the death benefit as you see fit, with level premiums that are invested and build over time.

Universal: You pay a minimum premium plus an investment amount. Both your investment and its returns are placed into a cash-value account, which can then be used to pay future premiums or left to build cash value.

Variable: Includes a broader selection of investment products than universal life. Beneficiaries receive the policy's face value or that amount plus the current value of your investment account upon your death.

Tips to Help You Save
The best way to get a great deal is to plan ahead. Consider your family, its needs and how those needs might change going forward. Get insured while you're young, and you'll take the pressure off both yourself and your insurer, who will then reward you with lower rates.

Other ways to get the best rates and save yourself time, energy and money include always telling the truth when applying for free quotes; reapplying for lower rates as your health changes; and comparing rates from several different companies at once.

Now, it's time to take hold of the future. Connect with local agents today, and provide for your family tomorrow. There's no better way to care for those you love.
FREE Car Insurance quote. Get an auto insurance quote and save today!
Leasing a house or apartment gives you flexibility that's absent with home ownership. When something breaks, a quick call to your landlord often solves the problem. When life changes and you need to pick up and move, there's no house to sell and you can move quickly, if need be.

And with an average investment of less than $20 a month, you can insure everything inside your home and protect yourself against lawsuit in case someone gets injured while visiting

Protecting What's Yours
Rental insurance is an inexpensive way to ensure the possessions you accumulate can be repaired or replaced if the unforeseen happens. The standard policy of this type covers big-ticket items like electronics, furniture and, often, appliances, as well as less expensive home contents, like clothing.

Most renters can acquire thousands of dollars worth of property and liability insurance at minimal cost. Yet fewer than half are insured, either because they underestimate the value of their personal possessions or wrongly assume their landlord's insurance plan covers their things.

Anyone who's ever experienced a home fire, smoke damage, lightning strike, vandalism or theft, explosion or windstorm knows how those kinds of events can damage a home—and drain your family's budget—to say nothing of what a liability lawsuit can do. But with affordable protection in place, occurrences like these don't have to become major life events or turn into huge financial losses.

Money-Saving Tips
As we've related, the cost of insuring your rental is minimal to start with. But with most of your money spoken for these days, we've provided these tips to help you get the most out of the policy you purchase:

Shop around, comparing policies and rates for the best coverage. We recommend using a free service like ours that offers connections with local insurance agents and multiple free insurance quotes.

Consider a higher-than-average deductible. This is the amount you pay on your own before your insurer begins paying on your behalf. Simply increasing your deductible from $250 to $500 can save you upwards of 15 percent.

Ask your agent about discounts. Items like alarm systems, smoke detectors, deadbolt locks and storm shutters often shave additional expense from premiums.
Insure your house or apartment with the same company you insure your car. You'll snag additional cash you can use elsewhere.

Don't smoke. Lighting up at home puts you and everything you own at risk.
If you're a renter living in an apartment, condo or house, you need specialized protection for the things you own. So use our network of agents today to shop your insurance rates and guarantee yourself the coverage you need. It's quick, convenient—and always free!
FREE Car Insurance quote. Get an auto insurance quote and save today!
Home ownership: it's an American dream. But buying a place of your own or settling the family in new digs requires financial commitment. That means saving for a down payment, getting the right loan, and—perhaps most importantly—finding affordable home insurance.

Whether you're buying your first home or just moving up to something larger, your home represents a huge investment you can't afford to ignore.

That's where we can help. By helping you understand your options, providing you money-saving insurance strategies, and matching you with local insurance agents offering free home insurance quotes, getting insured cheaply is simple, easy—and convenient.

Tips for Getting Insured
When you buy a new home, lenders need insurance information up-front. To make things quick and easy on yourself, let the agents you're matched with know what you're looking for and how much you can afford to spend. Then examine several price quotes and choose the policy that fits your budget best.

Once your home is insured, supply the lender your insurer's name and contact information, coverage levels and deductibles. They'll add this information to the new contract and escrow insurance as part of your monthly expenses.

No matter how long you live in your house, don't stick with the same homeowners insurance company year after year just because it's easier. Though commendable, loyalty may keep you from getting the best deal.

Instead, pull your insurance policy out and take a peek at least once a year. Shop your rates, make coverage changes that reflect changes you've made to your home, and discuss discounts with local insurance providers. Then settle on the broadest coverage for the least amount of money.

Maximizing Savings
As you compare coverage, prices and quotes, use these money-saving tips to save 60 percent or more on the protection you need:

Set deductibles as high as possible to slash as much as 25 percent from insurance rates.
Buy insurance for car and home from the same provider. This could garner you an additional savings of up to 15 percent.

Install security or safety devices in your home. This extra protection makes homes more secure and can score you another 20 percent in savings.
Eliminate unnecessary coverage. Save a bundle by getting rid of extra, unneeded coverage on items no longer owned or greatly depreciated.
Make home improvements. Update electrical or plumbing systems, or add items like deadbolt locks for a sizeable discount.

Insurance rates can vary by thousands from one insurer to the next. So take these basics to heart, shave money off your home insurance policy, and shop for low cost coverage right here and now. You'll insure your home affordably and be able to enjoy it securely for years to come.
FREE Car Insurance quote. Get an auto insurance quote and save today!

Whether you drive a brand new vehicle or a 20-year-old jalopy, hitting the road requires buying at least minimum levels of insurance coverage.

But if you're like most people, you probably don't know what your options are or what coverage you're required to carry, let alone how to get insured without spending a fortune.

Get the Best Price
During tough times like these, insurance companies need your business just as much as you need insurance. This can lead to cheap car insurance rates you might otherwise never expect.

If you're willing to learn, take advantage of a competitive marketplace and compare quotes from more than one insurer, we can help you find the right policy now—affordably, quickly and easily.

So read on for tips and tricks to getting insured, then request your free quotes above. The road to savings starts here!

Secrets You Should Know
Before you accept just any old policy sitting on a shelf, there are some things you should know about insurance rates, the factors that affect your premiums, and how to be your own best advocate when it comes to pricing, namely:

Insurers determine premiums mainly by ratings. You're rated according to the amount of claims risk you present, then grouped with others like you with similar risk rates. Factors like age and gender, where you live, your driving record, your marital status, any prior insurance coverage, how far you drive annually and your vehicle's make and model all affect your ratings.
Discounts can dramatically lower rates. Insurers reward those considered low risk with discounts that can translate into amazing savings. Some of those available include multiple vehicles, educated driver, good student, safe vehicle, low-mileage and multiple policies.
Each state sets its own insurance requirements. Depending on whether your state is a tort or a no-fault state, the type and amount of car insurance you're required to carry by law varies. Check with your state insurance department to find out how your state operates and the legal limits that apply.

Consider optional coverage for your own protection. Unless you drive an older vehicle, you'd be wise to purchase collision and comprehensive coverage for your car. Collision covers damage when your vehicle impacts another car or fixed object, and comprehensive pays for damage from almost all other causes.

Compare multiple quotes before making your final decision. By comparing rates and policies side by side, you can get insured more cheaply than ever before. All it takes is a few minutes, some basic information and wise decision-making.

Now that you better understand your options, it's time to get insured. So for maximum savings, drive safely, avoid tickets and accidents, and heed these secrets to saving money on auto insurance. Yet rising gas prices may have an unexpected benefit -- keeping drunken drivers off the roads.

The study's findings

When gas prices go up, people drive less, decreasing crash rates across the board. A recent study by Mississippi State University's Social Science Research Center suggests that this pattern is particularly pronounced when it comes to drunken driving crash rates. The study, which appeared in the journal Accident Analysis and Prevention, analyzed accident statistics in Mississippi between 2004 and 2008.

According to the study, each spike in gasoline prices corresponded with a dip in drunken driving crashes. This dip was not as dramatic when it came to other types of crashes (like crashes during commuting hours). The researchers concluded that spending more on gas left drivers with less money to spend on alcohol, meaning fewer drunken driving accidents. Meanwhile, driving to work is considered essential, and therefore is not as strongly influenced by gas prices.

Researchers also found that increases in the price of gasoline lowered rates for minor drunken driving accidents, but did not produce the same significant changes for drunken driving accidents that resulted in injuries or deaths. This led the group to conclude that gas prices may have more of an influence on light or moderate drinkers.

An expensive crime

Gas prices aren't the only thing that makes drunken driving expensive. A single conviction is enough to wreck the transportation budget of many drivers. For those who don't have extensive savings or who live on fixed incomes, a single DUI or DWI conviction can make it difficult and pricey to get auto insurance.

According to Progressive, a drunken driving conviction puts a driver in the high-risk category. Points are added to your license, and your insurance company will take note. Often, drunken drivers will have to file what's called an SR-22 with their local governments. This form is required to prove that they have the required amount of insurance -- and because they have demonstrated a tendency toward risky behavior, that insurance will likely cost more.

Insurance after a DUI or DWI can, quite simply, be expensive. Those who need this kind of auto insurance should get insurance quotes from various companies that cater to high-risk drivers, or even to look into state-run high-risk insurance pools. But the best way to handle this situation proactively is to hand over the keys before going out drinking.

FREE Car Insurance quote. If you think the answer is yes, you may be wrong. Policies often contain an intentional injury exclusion, which defines self-defense as an intentional act and therefore excluded from compensation. If someone is accidentally injured on your property, your home insurance liability coverage will cover medical bills and the resulting legal fees. But if you fire a gun at an intruder and you end up in court, the deliberateness of the act (even if it was in self-defense) means that your home insurance policy will not cover the resulting costs.

There is some disagreement about such exclusions, according to IRMI. Some courts have sided with insurers, while others have sided with homeowners. Some policies contain what's called a "reasonable force exception." If your policy has one, you'll be covered for injuries you deliberately cause, as long as they result from the use of "reasonable force to protect persons or property," according to IRMI.

What's a homeowner to do?

If your policy doesn't have a reasonable-force exception and you own a gun, you may want to consider extra coverage. Some specialty insurers offer self-defense coverage tailored to gun owners.

The National Rifle Association, for example, offers its members a self-defense insurance product provided by Lockton Affinity.
Whether you're working a great job on Wall Street, tweeting away as a social media consultant or still "getting your life together" while living in your parents' basement, as a single 20-something, you probably feel like you have most of your life way ahead of you. So why bother with life insurance?

Experts disagree about whether (and when) unmarried, childless young people should get life insurance. On one hand, nobody but you is relying on your income. On the other, buying early could get you some better deals.

First, it's important to understand that there is a dizzying variety of life insurance products to choose from, from term policies, to whole life policies to combination and convertible life insurance policies that blend a little bit of both. If you are a member of the U.S. military, Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI) may offer you the coverage you need.

Whatever form it takes, life insurance offers benefits that can be useful even for young singles who are years from starting a family. If you have a good salary and can afford slightly higher premiums, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners recommends investing in whole life insurance, which has a tax-sheltered investment component. New York Life points out that the savings whole life insurance accrues can help you pay for college loans, down payments and even entrepreneurial opportunities.

Even if you don't have a family or any dependents, you may leave behind expenses you may not have considered, according to New York Life. For one thing, life insurance can pay for your funeral expenses. And what if a family member took out student loans for you in his or her own name to help you out? If you die, that person would be left to pay them. Life insurance could help pay those debts.

What if you don't have any financial obligations or dependents? Should you forget the whole insurance thing? Perhaps. But it's conceivable that you may want life insurance in the future. It's also conceivable that your health will change -- and, if your health declines severely, you may be denied coverage or charged higher premiums.

But if you get a whole life insurance policy now, you can lock into a rate as a healthy 24-year-old. You can potentially keep those lower rates your entire life -- even if you become an overweight heart transplant patient by the time you're 50 -- as long as you pay your premiums on time and meet the other obligations of your policy.

Of course, caveats apply. If you don't have the income necessary to pay your premiums, getting life insurance may be a bad idea. Missing your payments could cause your policy to evaporate on the spot -- meaning that all the money you paid in was essentially for nothing. If you have the means to do so, however, buying life insurance when you're young and healthy can be a good investment -- and can give you much-needed protection when that distant future suddenly sneaks up on you.
FREE Car Insurance quote. But life goes on, and it's vital to provide for emotional and financial needs ahead of time so those left behind can not only survive, but thrive.
That's the job and policy of life insurance. The right plan can mean the difference between prosperity and poverty when death claims a loved one. By giving family members time to readjust—and the resources needed to do so—this product fills a gap that nothing else can.
Answering Some Difficult Questions
Insurance can be a complicated subject. But by answering a few questions about personal and family life, a difficult subject can become simpler.
Ask yourself:
◦Who is dependent on my income?

◦How much income do I currently provide?

◦Do I want to set aside money to pay for my children's education

◦How will my family pay final expenses in the event of my death?

◦Do I want to donate money to charity when I die?

◦Do I want to leave money for family members?

Equipped with the above information, relay it to an insurance agent, who can help locate the best coverage to fit everyone's needs.
By knowing exactly what they'll need to pay the bills, care for elderly parents, send kids off to college, pay off mortgages or other debts, or meet similar financial goals, a professional agent can offer policy coverage that will be available when the family needs it: during a time of transition and loss.
Examining Policies One by One
Depending on financial and lifelong goals, a life insurance agent will recommend coverage that best meets family needs.
Whether the goal is to leave money so loved ones can pay final expenses or simply to provide savings for the future, a policy from amongst the following types should be just what the doctor ordered:
◦Whole life: a policy that covers the insured for life, not just a set period of time. Premiums remain level while the policy is in effect, and the insurer invests a portion of the premiums paid, building the policy's value over time.
◦Term life: the simplest form. Coverage is purchased for a specific policy period and, if the insured dies during that time, the beneficiary receives the full value of the policy. Term insurance does not allow for investment.
◦Universal life: used to accumulate investment. Minimum premiums are paid and an additional amount invested, usually in bonds and mortgages. Both the investment and its returns are placed into a cash-value account, which may then be used to pay future policy premiums—or left untouched to continue building.
◦Variable life: similar to universal life insurance, but includes a broader selection of investment products, including stocks. Beneficiaries receive the face value of the policy, OR that amount PLUS the value of the investment account.

With the help of a pro, choosing the right coverage for you can be simple. Since loved ones may not be thinking clearly during a time of loss, an agent can help you make the right choice now.
FREE Car Insurance quote.

How Rates are Determined

Insurers look at a variety of factors when determining the risk to insure you. That is, life and health insurance companies pay close attention to your health status to gauge whether you’ll fall seriously ill or pass away within a short time of purchasing the policy.

As a result, those with pre-existing health conditions or precarious medical histories may pay more for health or life insurance—or have trouble finding a policy all together.

Shopping Tips

While a pre-existing condition may narrow your individual insurance options, don’t feel down and out. These tips can help you find the right health or life insurance policy to meet your needs.

Know your rights. Because insurance matters are regulated by each individual state, there may be certain resources and provisions in place to help you find and keep insurance coverage.

Try to find coverage under a group policy. Group coverage, such as that offered by your employer, tends to be more economical. Furthermore, if you choose to participate during open enrollment, you may not be required to undergo a medical exam.

Shop around. If group coverage isn’t a feasible option for you, make sure to compare free life and health insurance quotes here on our site. This is the best way to find the right policy to meet your unique needs.

When buying term life insurance, make sure it’s guaranteed renewable. Guaranteed renewability means that you have the option to renew your policy after the term ends. While your premium may increase as you age, if your policy is guaranteed renewable, you won’t have to undergo a medical exam.

Just because you have a pre-existing condition doesn’t mean you’re uninsurable. And by getting all the facts, learning about the resources available to you, and comparing multiple quotes, you’ll be able to find the best policy available.
FREE Car Insurance quote. But because much space is shared, it's often unclear who is responsible for maintenance—and who should pick up the tab when accidents occur: the condo association or the resident?

Though the association's general insurance policy covers the building's structure; common areas like pools, shared walkways and basements; and the property and grounds, it may or may not cover items like interior fixtures, drywall, appliances and carpeting.

For condo owners with the right insurance policy, there's no need to worry when the tub overflows and ruins a neighbor's ceiling, hail damages the roof, or a friend trips and falls while visiting. Once an insurance claim has been filed, the appropriate insurance company picks up the tab, providing money to repair damages, replace what's ruined and, when necessary, pay medical bills.

This provides financial stability for the condominium owner and helps ensure:

◦Possessions like furniture, clothing, electronics, art and appliances can be repaired or replaced

◦Liability coverage in case someone is injured or suffers a loss while visiting

◦Coverage for additions or changes made to the original condo structure

◦Clean-up takes place following disaster

Though many condo owners are clueless when it comes to insurance, a licensed home insurance agent can be their best friend when comparing insurance policies. Trained specifically in this type of protection, they know the ins and outs of insuring shared spaces, and are often the best resource for evaluating specific insurance needs.
Home ownership can be a gratifying and affordable experience, especially for those who prefer condo living. To get the best rates—whether you live uptown or down—take advantage of these discounts when it's time to insure:

◦Home and car—Insure both together and save up to 20 percent

◦Protective device—Add smoke detectors, fire alarms or sprinkler systems to the condo and save up to 15 percent more

◦Claims free—Save up to 20 percent if you've had no claims in the past three years

◦Age of construction—Get up to 30 percent off, based on your condo's age

◦Age of insured—Get up to 15 percent off if you're 60 or older

But should they be traffic cops?
According to a study released in February 2011 by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), red light cameras saved 159 lives in 14 cities between 2004 and 2008 by bringing down fatal accident rates at intersections. Red light cameras monitor intersections and report red light infractions electronically, triggering a citation to the offending driver in the form of a letter from the municipality.
The IIHS study compared drops in fatal accident rates in almost 100 cities, including the 14 cities with cameras, against fatal accident rates for the same cities in the 1990s. Rates went down for all cities, partially because of better vehicle design. However, in cities using red light cameras, fatal crashes fell by 35 percent. For cities without cameras, the rate fell by just 10 percent to 14 percent.
A separate question-and-answer resource from the IIHS elaborates on why the cameras are used and why they are necessary. The IIHS identifies most red light runners as younger drivers who don’t wear seat belts and who have previous traffic citations -- in other words, someone who will run a red light once likely will do it again.
There are alternatives to the cameras, like roundabouts and longer yellow-light times. But the IIHS contends that roundabouts are not a universal solution according to traffic engineers, and longer yellow-light times are largely ineffective. Also, the IIHS points out the dangers involved in police officers enforcing red light infractions: They often have drive through red lights to catch offenders.
Not everyone is on board with the use of red light cameras. Just as with other video surveillance technology, these electronic traffic cops have brought their fair share of criticism. The National Motorists Association opposes the cameras and claims that they can't positively identify the driver, decrease efficiency at intersections and depend on the mail (an unreliable method) for the delivery of citations. A 2008 Florida Public Health Review article claims that red light cameras encourage abrupt (and possibly unsafe) stopping, which actually could cause more accidents.
Critics also contend that red light cameras may exist primarily to bring in money for municipalities. In addition to saving on police costs, the cities get all of that extra revenue from fines. Insurance companies might be profiting, too, according to the Florida Public Health Review article. Cameras might lead to higher auto insurance premiums for drivers who end up with marks on their driving record, or who get in rear-end crashes because a driver stops suddenly at a yellow light to avoid a ticket.
FREE Car Insurance quote.
1. 1995 Honda Civic

2. 1991 Honda Accord

3. 1989 Toyota Camry

4. 1997 Ford F-150 Series Pickup

5. 1994 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Pickup

6. 1994 Acura Integra

7. 2004 Dodge Ram Pickup

8. 1994 Nissan Sentra

9. 1988 Toyota Pickup

10. 2007 Toyota Corolla

Do you know where your car is at this very moment? I hate to sound alarmist, but there's a decent chance that a thief is taking it for a joyride and is headed toward Fresno.

Ok, well maybe not a huge chance, but consider the following statistics from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), an industry-supported group that monitors insurance fraud:

Modesto, Calif: the top U.S. metropolitan area for motor vehicle theft (2007)
1995 Honda Civic: the most frequently stolen passenger vehicle (2007)
If you drive a small Japanese sedan, coupe or hatchback and live in an inland California city east of the Bay Area … well, let's just hope you've at least got The Club.

According to the FBI, a car is stolen every 29 seconds in the U.S., and the rate of theft in 2007 was an estimated 363.3 per 100,000 people. Property losses in 2006 were nearly $8 billion, for an average of $6,649 per stolen car.

That's the bad news. The good news is that motor vehicle thefts have gone down every year since 2004. One reason for the reduction is the gradual improvement and proliferation of anti-theft devices, such as car alarms, kill switches and immobilizers.

According to the NICB, many cars that reported stolen were not actually stolen: they are cases of what's called 'owner give-up,' or more generally, insurance fraud. "Owner give-ups are often motivated by economic factors," wrote the NICB in "Hot Wheels: Vehicle Theft in Third Year of Decline," their 2006 car theft report. "If a person owes more on a vehicle than it is worth, having it stolen allows the owner to walk away from the debt."

A good many more, however, are legitimate thefts, and those cars rarely get recovered. While the theft rate has gone down, the recovery rate has as well: the NICB says the recovery rate is at a dismal 59 percent, which means if your ride is stolen, there's only a slight better than 50/50 chance you'll ever see it again.

And where do those stolen cars go? In the case of California and other border states, they often go south. Some go to 'chop shops,' which, as the name suggests, disassemble the cars for their parts. More sophisticated car theft syndicates will ship cars overseas, where they are resold for a hefty profit.

Given that the 1995 Honda Civic is the most stolen car, does that mean you should you skip buying a Honda Civic? No. In fact, if you buy a late-model Civic, there's a good chance thieves will leave it alone. Older models with fewer security features dominate the most stolen lists. In other words, thieves are generally a lazy bunch: they like to pick of the easy ones.
FREE Car Insurance quote. Get an auto insurance quote and save today!

Others simply end up in the wrong place at the wrong time. But regardless how we meet our demise, we all have one thing in common: sooner or later, we take our bows and make our final exit.

When a friend or family member dies, loved ones left behind must find a way to go on with life. If the one who passed had life insurance in place, finances are usually available to help make the transition smoother.

But regardless how death occurs, some situations that lead to a passing make no sense at all; in fact, they're just plain weird!

The Wild & Wacky

Take for instance these examples that led some into the great beyond unexpectedly.

He died of laughter. A 50-year-old bricklayer sat down to watch his favorite television show—and laughed so hard for an extended period of time that his heart gave out and he died. In a strange twist, his wife wrote the show, thanking the producers for making her husband's last moments enjoyable.

A four-foot beard? What a trip! Austrian Hans Steininger, famous for sporting the world's longest beard, jumped out of bed one night to respond to a fire in town. In his haste, he tripped on his beard and lost his balance, falling and breaking his neck.

What a web we weave. Mother of modern dance, Isadora Duncan, died in 1927 when her favorite silk scarf got tangled around her car's wheel. The scarf wound so tightly that it jerked Miss Duncan out of the vehicle, dragged her for several yards and threw her violently against the pavement. She was killed on impact.

Trapped in refuse. In 1947, police found the remains of one of two brothers amongst the newspapers and trash they had collected and hoarded in their home for years. Though it was later determined that Homer Collyer had died of starvation, his brother's whereabouts remained a mystery—until workers discovered his body only 10 feet from Homer's two weeks later. It seems Langley Collyer, who was caring for his paralyzed, invalid brother, had gotten ensnared in one of his own booby traps set for anyone who tried to remove things from the home—and ended up dead in his own refuse.

A case of knowledge. Mariesa Weber went missing from home, and her family reported her disappearance to the authorities. Nearly two weeks later, she was found wedged behind a bookcase in her room. She had apparently stood on her dresser and leaned over the top to adjust the television plug in the wall behind it, fallen head-first into the space and perished.

An act of overindulgence. King Adolf Frederick of Sweden loved to eat—so much so that he overindulged in 1771 and died of a digestive ailment. His final meal? Lobster, caviar, cabbage soup, sauerkraut, smoked herring, champagne and 14 servings of his favorite dessert—enough to kill anyone!

The Famous Also Fall Victim

Even celebrities sometimes die under the strangest of circumstances. Consider these cases concerning the famous who passed unexpectedly, demonstrating that notoriety doesn't grant anyone immunity from death.

Bored to death.??The founder of Rodale Press and Organic Farming and Gardening magazine, Jerome Irving Rodale died of a heart attack while being interviewed on the Dick Cavett Show in 1971. When Rodale ceased responding to Cavett's questions, appearing fast asleep instead, Cavett asked him offhandedly if he was bored. On further inspection, the answer became clear: yes! Rodale had died quietly during the interview. The producers never aired the show out of respect for the deceased.

Picked to death. The author, Sherwood Anderson, accidentally swallowed a toothpick at a party. He later developed peritonitis and died as a result.

Bite your tongue! Allan Pinkerton, famous for creating the Pinkerton detective agency and developing investigative surveillance techniques, accidentally slipped while walking down a sidewalk and bit his tongue when he landed. The wound became infected, and he later died.

He kicked the bucket—er, safe. The famous Jack Daniel, who founded the Tennessee whisky company, died of blood poisoning after kicking his safe in anger. It seems he couldn't remember the combination to the blasted thing—and was determined to show it who was boss!

The indisposed King. Elvis Presley, known as the king of rock and roll, died in 1977 while doing his business on the toilet. Doctors later attributed his passing to weight gain and prescription drugs.

She "made" the news. Christine Chubbuck, a depressed reporter, began her news broadcast as usual on the night of July 15, 1974. However, eight minutes into the broadcast, she abruptly switched gears, announced her intention to bring the audience the news in vivid living color—and promptly shot herself in the head.

A stinging sensation. Australian wildlife expert and TV personality Steve "The Crocodile Hunter" Irwin was killed in 2006 when a stingray stabbed him through the heart. Irwin was filming a documentary at the time of the accident.

Going out with Style

Dealing with the reality of death leaves some people reeling. But by preparing for the worst and expecting the unexpected, we can all go out with style during our last act, leave our loved ones the legacy of life insurance—and make a dramatic exit.
FREE Car Insurance quote. But they also bring health benefits, too.

Whether they prefer cats, dogs, or have a house full of both, research shows that pet owners also enjoy increased quality of life, greater emotional well being and more improved health than those who live without pets. Some experts even claim pets help extend lives!

But there’s something else about Fido or Tabby you may not know: by helping you stay healthy and strong, he can also help lower your health and life insurance rates—saving you money on insurance premiums.

Pets: Making Lives Better

What is it about pets that enamor us? Is it those cute, floppy ears or the way they show us affection by rubbing against our legs or climbing into our laps? Or maybe it’s the way they pick up on our emotions, gluing themselves to our sides when we’re upset, nervous or ill?

Indeed, pets seem to have a sixth sense about their owners’ emotional and physical state, as witnessed by dogs trained to alert epileptics about oncoming seizures or those that work with the disabled to help them perform daily life activities.

But for the rest of us, how do pets actually improve our lives and help us stay healthy?

A Dozen Reasons to Own a Pet

According to reliable sources like the Humane Society of the United States and the North American Pet Health Insurance Association, there are at least a dozen ways pets improve the lives of everyday people like you and me.

If you’re considering getting a pet—or adding another one to your household—consider the following ways animals can improve the entire family’s health and life. Factors like these may help win you over, as well as save you some money on insurance bills!

Lowered Risk of Heart Disease
Lowered Risk of Hypertension
Slower Heart Rate
Reduced Frequency of Doctor Visits
Increased Capacity of Dealing with Stress/Traumatic Events
Faster Rehabilitation Following Trauma
Increased Survival Rates from Heart Attacks
Relief of Depression/Dementia in Seniors
Lowered Risk of Allergens in Children
Increased Chance of Being Physically Active
Improved Quality of Life
Lowered Risk of Seizure in Epileptics

Pets and Insurance Rates

So how does owning a pet equate to lower health and life insurance rates?

Well, the healthier you are, the longer you’re likely to live. And since pets help reduce the likelihood of many physical ailments and improve mental health along the way, those who own them are less likely to need medical or mental health services. The result? A longer, healthier life for you; less risk for your insurer—and lower insurance rates.

If you’re not currently a pet owner, there’s no better time than the present to bring home that cuddly little puppy, kitten or abandoned shelter animal. With 12 good reasons for doing so, you could be living a happier, healthier, longer life soon—and saving money on insurance.
FREE Car Insurance quote.
What it Covers

This type of plan is often referred to as a "package policy." That's because it provides coverage for:

- Damage to the structure of your home
- Damage to your personal belongings
- Additional living expenses if you're temporarily unable to live in your home after it's been damaged
- Liability if someone is injured on your property

Of course, the specifics of these coverages are determined by what kind of policy you have and how much you've insured your home for. To help you figure out what kind of policy you need, let's take a look at some general coverage options.

Coverage Options

As you shop for home insurance, you'll notice there are a handful of policies from which to choose.

According to the Insurance Information Institute (III), the most common examples include the following:

Limited (HO-1): This bare bones policy covers 10 perils, including damage caused by fire, smoke, lightning, theft and vandalism.

Basic (HO-2): This policy covers 16 perils, including damage caused by the weight of snow and ice, frozen pipes and other accidental water damage from appliances.

Special (HO-3): This is the most popular residence insurance policy, as it covers all perils, except for damages from flood, landslide, mudslide, and war.

It's important to remember that this is not an all-inclusive list; there are other comparable residence insurance policies available for other types of homes, such as condos, mobile homes or historic homes.

Levels of Coverage

Once you've decided which type of policy is right for you, you'll need to consider the level of coverage you need: actual cash value, replacement cost or guaranteed replacement cost.

Actual cash value: This level of coverage pays to replace your home and possessions, minus depreciation. That means if you bought a laptop two years ago for $1,200, you probably won't be reimbursed the full $1,200.

Replacement cost: This level of coverage pays to replace your home and possessions without a deduction for depreciation. This means if you can show you paid $1,200 for your laptop, you'll be reimbursed for that amount (up to your policy amount). This is the most popular level of residence insurance coverage.

Guaranteed replacement cost: This level of coverage pays whatever it costs to rebuild your home and replace your possessions—even if it exceeds the policy limit. As protection is concerned, this offers the highest level of coverage.

Saving Money

Whether you live in a house, mobile home or condo, you can save on residence insurance by:

Shopping around. Online shopping sites like InsureMe.com allow you to compare multiple quotes from local insurers to find the policy that's right for you.

Increasing your deductible. Agreeing to pay more out-of-pocket on claims will automatically shrink your premium. Just remember to choose a deductible you can afford!

Combining your home and auto polices. Most insurers give a nice discount to homeowners who insure their vehicles with the same company.

Making home repairs. If you've recently replaced your roof, upgraded your plumbing, or purchased a new heating system, you may be eligible for a discount!

Installing electronic alarms and fire safety equipment. Make sure to tell your agent if you have an electronic anti-theft alarm, sprinklers or live near a fire department. All of these things may be worthy of a premium discount.
FREE Car Insurance quote. Get an auto insurance quote and save today!

If both of you have auto insurance, your insurance company will cover all but your deductible. Your auto insurance policy insures your vehicle, plus you, your relatives and anyone else you give permission to use your car.

On the other hand, if your friend or family member causes an accident resulting in serious bodily injury and property damage, that friend's or family member's policy will cover the bodily injury liability, and your policy will cover the property damage caused by your car. As the car's owner, your liability insurance also covers the cost of your legal fees in the event you are sued. However, if your liability limits are exceeded, the courts can appropriate funds from your home or other personal assets in order to recover the cost of damages. Liability coverage will not pay for damages beyond the limit for which you are insured.

If you lend your car to someone who does not have insurance, however, you are inviting trouble. If the damage your friend causes exceeds your insurance policy limits, the injured party can sue you for medical and property damage expenses.

What if your friend or family member drives your car without your permission? You're likely not to be held financially responsible.** This is because it was done without your knowledge. In this case, your friend's insurance will cover the costs incurred. If your friend doesn't have insurance, your collision insurance will cover the damages to your vehicle; your liability coverage will cover damage to the other driver's property. Unfortunately, the insurance company will assume your friend has permission to use your car unless there are clear indications otherwise or there are extenuating circumstances (such as a drunken friend who takes your car without your knowledge).

If your car is stolen and then involved in an accident, you will not be held responsible for damage done to others and their property—but you will probably have to use your own collision insurance to pay for the repairs to your car. Even in the unlikely event the thief has auto insurance, the thief's insurance company will not cover damage incurred during a criminal act.

Regardless of the scenario, it is wise to understand the intricacies of your insurance policy and exercise common sense when loaning your car to roommates, friends and relatives.

Remember, insurance mandates differ by state. Check with your state's department of insurance to learn the rules and regulations where you live.
FREE Car Insurance quote. Get an auto insurance quote and save today!
Is your spouse trying to kill you for the insurance money?

Let’s hope not. But if s/he is, s/he wouldn’t be the first to attempt such a heinous crime.

It’s hard to know how often people get away with “offing” their spouses or family members for the insurance money, but a quick Google search reveals that quite a few would-be beneficiaries get caught and tossed in the clink, goosing the ratings of CourtTV in the process.

The creepy thing about life insurance is that it creates a rather undesirable situation in which other people stand to benefit monetarily from your death. In the presence of the wrong people, your life insurance policy becomes, in effect, a bounty on your head.

Life-insurance-related murder is the most insidious form of insurance fraud, which is any kind of lying—staged accidents, calculated omission, willful negligence—in order to obtain payment from an insurer.

Though it must be said that the guy who burns down houses and collects from insurers is a saint next to these two ladies, who preyed upon two homeless men by setting them up with insurance policies and then killing them.

Perhaps the creepiest case of life-insurance-related murder: Olga Rutterschmidt and Helen Golay, both in their 70s, killed two homeless men, setting them up with insurance policies, drugging them and running them over with their car.

In April 2008, Olga Rutterschmidt, 75 and Helen Golay, 77, were found guilty of murdering Kenneth McDavid and Paul Vados, two homeless men living in Los Angeles.

With each murder, Rutterschmidt and Golay won the victim’s trust, even putting them each up in apartments. Then they forged life insurance applications and waited (to avoid rousing suspicion from insurers when it came time to cash in).

McDavid and Vados were each found dead in alleys after being drugged and run over.

Police suspicion mounted when they observed the similarities between murders: both cases appeared to be hit and runs, and both men were claimed by strange elderly women.

When this case became public knowledge, in 2006, we followed it with morbid curiosity on the InsureMe Agent Blog. The two elderly ladies were found guilty in the spring of 2008 and are serving life sentences in federal prison.

Murder and the Law

According to Prof. Bill Long, a legal consultant and prolific web essayist, “under the common law, a person who ‘feloniously and intentionally’ killed another is barred from receiving the proceeds of a life insurance policy on the victim.” Makes sense …

“But what was interesting about the CL rule,” Long says on his Web site, DrBillLong.com, “is that it didn't require conviction of the crime to bar recovery … the civil standard of liability rather than the criminal standard of guilt is what is required.” In other words manslaughter—which includes willful negligence—can also bar someone from cashing in on a policy. It needn’t be blatant murder.

Other states have felt the need to get more specific by initiating “slayer statutes,” which further codify bans on profiting from spousal death. Other states have insurance-related codes; Long cites this one from Texas:

The interest of a beneficiary in a life insurance policy or contract heretofore or hereafter issued shall be forfeited when the beneficiary is the principal or an accomplice in willfully bringing about the death of the insured. When such is the case, the nearest relative of the insured shall receive said insurance.

When Insurance Companies are Liable

Some state courts have recognized that there are times when an insurer should be aware when something fishy is going on—when a person named as the beneficiary had no “insurable interest” in the insured.
New York lawyer Norman L. Tolle, who represents health and life insurance carriers, and has written on the subject of insurance-related murder and the obligations insurers have to be on the lookout for shady behavior.

In this article, Tolle notes an important case, Liberty National Life Insurance Co. v. Weldon, in which the Alabama Supreme Court held that insurers have a responsibility to “use reasonable care not to create a situation which may prove to be a stimulus for murder.”

The 1957 case involved the murder of a 2-year-old by her aunt, who had been named a beneficiary on a life insurance policy for the child despite having no role in the child’s upbringing. The father of the child sued the insurer for failing to exercise “reasonable diligence” in ensuring the aunt had an insurable interest in her niece’s life.

Here’s what the court found:

It has long been recognized by this court and practically all courts in this country that an insured is placed in a position of extreme danger where a policy of insurance is issued on his life in favor of a beneficiary who has no insurable interest. . . . Where this court has found that such policies are unreasonably dangerous to the insured because of the risk of murder and for this reason has declared such policies void, it would be an anomaly to hold that insurance companies have no duty to use reasonable care not to create a situation which may prove to be a stimulus for murder.

In this case, the company didn’t even bother to notify the child’s parents that the aunt was taking out an insurance policy of their daughter. The parents found out about the policy only after the death of their child.

Conclusion
Even with extreme vigilance on the part of insurers and the insured, there will always be stories about people killing in order to, um, expedite their beneficiary status. Where there’s greed and opportunity, there are ripe conditions for insurance murder.

CourtTV is counting on it.
Rather, we're referring to new evidence which suggests that drinking a small amount of wine each day can extend your life a few years.

That means healthier living-and lower insurance rates.

Scientists have known for years that drinking in moderation can help us live longer-while imbibing excessively can cut life short. But now, researchers have discovered that most men who consume about a half-glass of wine (20 grams) as part of their daily alcohol intake actually live about five years longer than tee-totalers, according to WebMD.

Not only that, they also live longer than those who enjoy beer or hard liquor, instead of wine.
A new Dutch study, recently referenced in Reuters News, revealed that the majority of men who drink at least two grams of wine a day will live an average of 2.5 years longer than their beer- or liquor-drinking buddies-and five years longer than those who drink no booze at all.

That's a hard pill for some to swallow. But the study proves what would otherwise have been wishful thinking on the part of wine drinkers everywhere: it's OK to pick up that wine glass and enjoy its smooth, luscious contents...but only in moderation.

The study, which took place in the Netherlands, followed 1,130 middle-aged men over a 40-year period, examining diet, habits, overall health and the impact of drinking beer, liquor and wine.
Researchers investigated how much alcohol the men drank, the form in which it was consumed and for what period of time, and whether the men smoked or had any serious illnesses.

As it turns out, the men in the study died at an average age of 77, as opposed to the normal average of 72.

There was no denying it: those who drank wine long term-especially the red variety-lived longer than their counterparts who didn't.

Perhaps even more surprising, heavier drinkers who consumed more than 20 grams of wine daily still lived longer than most. However, drinking more decreased that benefit by 3.1 percent, giving them a lifespan only 1.9 years longer than average.

It appears that indulging in a glass of wine leads to better health and longer life than downing a mug of beer or a shot of the hard stuff.

Next time you get the urge, enjoy a small glass of rosy red wine.* You might be surprised how long you can live when you 'wine' a little!

*Please note: This Blog neither encourages nor discourages the consumption of alcohol, and references this information only as it pertains to health and insurance quotes.

FREE Car Insurance quote.
