Google Analytics is still my favourite however (!) all of these programs are brilliant and very useful. This free download for you using free iMacros in FireFox 3.5.3 will open the eleven websites referred to in the title of this blog - just click Allow, then once the macro has finished (will take less than 2 minutes) be sure to go to your Bookmarks menu then Bookmark All Tabs/Save or Add Bookmarks with a folder name, then "Open All in Tabs" next time you want to access these sites. We have all been aware of Twitter’s amazing growth over the past 6 months, including the impact that global celebrities (such as Oprah, Britney Spears, Ellen de Generes and Ashton Kutcher) have had on the uptake and membership of Twitter in March 2009.

Twitter’s phenomenal growth has also seen it become an increasingly influential part of the web landscape, driving discovery and sharing of a multitude of other websites as it grows. To measure the growing influence of Twitter I have reviewed the number of sites in the Upstream (websites visited before Twitter) and Downstream (websites visited after Twitter) clickstream to see if the growth is in line with the overall trends and if the number of upstream websites has been key to the market share growth of Twitter.

Last week Twitter hit an all time high in terms of All Categories ranking and market share, according to Hitwise Australia.. Twitter is now the 26th ranked website visited by Australian Internet users (week ending 5 September 2009) with a market share of 0.29%, now capturing more Australian visits than news.com.au (0.28%), RealEstate.com.au (0.28%), The Age (0.21%), AFL.com.au (0.18%) and Amazon.com (0.11%). Twitter’s share of visits and ranking maybe considerably higher when taking into account usage through the various desktop and mobile applications.

The chart below shows the increase in the number of websites, both before and after visiting Twitter, growing rapidly around the time of the Ashton Kutcher challenge to CNN to reach 1 million users (he now has over 3.4 million followers), overlaid with Twitter’s market share growth (on the secondary axis).

Over the past 6 months the number of sites driving traffic to Twitter has increased 479% (comparing the weeks ending 5 September and 14 March 2009)while Twitter’s market share in visits has increased a similar amount, +460%. In the past month the growth continues with Twitter’s market share increasing 42% and the number of sites in the upstream clickstream also up 42% (week ending 5 September compared to week ending 15 August 2009).

Twitter drives downstream visits to over 17,000 downstream websites (17,166 in week ending 5 September 2009) with other Social Networking sites being the major recipient of visitors from Twitter (18.42% of downstream visits during week ending 5 September 2009).

As my colleague Heather Hopkins noted in May of this year in reference to the US market, “Twitter is being used as a social network and a means of distributing content. This is by no means the only way it is being used – just one standout trend.”

Photography sites (such as Twitpic), garnered 11.1% and Search Engines 6.8%, while Multimedia sites (4.9%), Blogs and Personal websites (4.6%) and Email Services (4.2%) all receive more of Twitter’s Clickstream than News and Media (Print), who receive 3.4%.

The following chart shows downstream visits by industry. The dark blue bars represent the parent industry, while the red bars represent sub-categories. For example, Photography is a sub-category of Entertainment.

The leading sites receiving traffic from Twitter in the table below are dominated by the other Social Networking sites and led by the photo sharing site Twitpic (www.twitpic.com), which itself has had a meteoric ride up the rankings on the back of Twitter’s success. In the past 12 months Twitpic’s share of visits has increased 248%%.It is currently the number three Photography site and ranked 208 across All Categories , according to Hitwise rankings (week ending 5 September 2009).

In the future there will be many websites that ride the coat-tails of another to success by providing a complimentary meaningful utility and service. What utility or service can you provide within Social Networking?

At the Search Engine Strategies conference a few weeks back, we had the pleasure of interviewing Bruce Clay. We asked Bruce about the importance of online video when it comes to organic and universal search ranking algorithms in Google. For those of you not in the search marketing industry, Bruce is sort of a “big kahuna.” He founded www.bruceclay.com back in 1996, before some of us even were on the internet, and his firm Bruce Clay, Inc. , is the is one of the top SEO and SEM firms in the world.

In our interview with Bruce, he discusses “Engagement Objects” and talks about how these engagement objects, in particular video, are thought to be of crucial importance when it comes to organic and universal search.

What is an Engagement Object?

An “Engagement Object” is an element or multimedia component that you can add to your website that is engaging and causes users to interact with your website.

Bruce also talks about variables that are important to the Google search algorithm and discusses how the introduction of universal search has resulted in a change in the number of variables that are considered for ranking. Previously, it was accepted that Google used 120 variables to rank websites. Since the introduction of universal search and more use of engagement objects across websites, the thought is that Google has increased the algorithm variables to 200 variables, most of which can be attributed to these engagement objects.

“…In the case of video, we believe that as one of the more important engagement objects, google has actually started to build it into the algorithm. To us, that means if your website has engagement objects on it, video or mp3… it is going to be received by the algorithm better and your site will actually have an opportunity to rank better.

Now today, we haven’t seen it much as an incidence of ranking, mostly because not everyone is doing it. …I dont think weve yet seen even the tip of the iceberg.

I think, that a year from now, we are going to be sitting here saying – ‘if you don’t have video, if you don’t have engagement objects on your website, you are just not going to rank. It will make you last amoung equals if you don’t have it.”

Click on the first of the six links from this website address hit OK and then do absolutely nothing!! Just watch how this macro or recording I created will open up tabs in your FireFox browser automatically saving you typing and saves Googling for the best free advertising websites!
Now equally very important the very next thing is to save all of these websites in your FFox Bookmarks so that you don't have to type anything for the next time you need them, let FFOx do this for you by clicking Bookmarks and click Bookmark all tabs, then give this a name like Ads1 or FreeAds1, choose a folder such as Bookmarks Menu then click Add bookmarks to save these. Now even cooler for next time that you need to open all these websites again, just go to the Bookmarks menu and where you see the folder name that you just created, mouse across to the right arrow, then you can click "Open all in Tabs" and FFox opens all of these websites instantly so you don't have to type a thing!
NOw we click on one the free advertising websites that you have open and click on Join or register. Here is where the RForm Identity that you created from the last podcast instantly does all the hard work for you.

A simple and free way to keep a perfect inventory of your household items safely using Google Sketchup and Picasa, two free downloads from Google. We thought of this post after reading how recently so many people suffered the terrible loss of their homes due to flooding and bushfires in the USA and here in Australia so we hope that these free suggestions may help slightly.

Your home and contents policy will have a list of all of your insured items but do you have a photo of all of these items? What about those paper receipts you kept when you bought that last sofa or chair? Go on and scan those receipts and take those photos then upload them to your own private online photo album using Picasa 3, which is free from Google.
These records are now safely online and only you can view them however be sure to check that you mark your online photo album private. This is usually enough however this second tip is also very useful especially for rebuilding or replacing items for your home.
Download Google Sketchup 7 FREE from Google then with your list of household items, from the File menu, choose 3D Warehouse then "Get Models". Search for your existing household items and click "Download Model".
Even if you have no experience with Google Sketchup, you don't need any for this example because after you click on "Download Model", you can simply click "Yes" to load the model directly into the already open session of Google Sketchup. Just remember to save the final file you create once you have downloaded all of the models you choose!
