Instructions

Step 1

Launch your Web browser, and then type 192.168.1.1 into the address field. Hit "Enter."

that it would be easier to recognize what you should be seeing. If you have any questions please contact Don or

1. Go to www.skype.com.

2. Click on the “Download” tab.

3. Click “Download now” If you are working on a Mac you will have to look in the menu column on the
right side of the screen and click the Skype version you need for your computer operating system.

4. The next screen will be an install agreement. Click “I agree-install”

5. Next will be a browser highlighter. Unclick the “Yes” box. Then click next.

6. It will then go to the downloading screen.

7. Then a “Thank you for installing Skype” message will appear. Click Finish.

8. You now have Skype installed on your computer!

9. Skype will open automatically in its own window.

10. If you already have a Skype name this will be your log in page. If you do not have a Skype name click
on the link “Don’t have a Skype Name?” This window will appear.

11. Create your Skype name and password. It may be helpful to write this information somewhere. Once
you have created your name and sign in you will see a “Welcome” page.

12. It may be helpful to use the “Take a minute to get set up. . .” option. Specifically the “Find friends and
import contacts” and the “Check your sound works.” Please use the “Check your sound works to begin
with. This will ensure your sound settings are correct from the beginning. These things can be done at
any time. You will also find directions on how to find friends later in this document.

13. When you open Skype for a new session it will look like this:

14. As you can see I have Don as a contact as well as a few other people. Those marked with a green check
are those available to chat with or call. There are other icons that mean different things. The gray x
means not available. There are a few others that mean busy or away from the desk. They can be found in the “Skype” menu under “Online Status.” It will look like this:

15. To find another Skype user, click on “Contacts.” In the “Contacts” menu click on “Search for Skype
Users.”

17. Fill out the appropriate boxes and click find. Skype will search for the contact and provide a list of
people in the box. Highlight the person you are looking for and click “Add contact.”

18. Skype allows you to chat with people, similar to Instant Message (IM). Or, you can call people and
speak to them. It also allows for video during calls.

19. To chat: Click on the contact you wish to chat with. You will notice that Don’s name is highlighted in
the contact list. In the column on the right below the picture you will see a few buttons and then text.
This text is what remains of the chat Don and I had yesterday. Below this text there is a box. Inside the
box it says “Type a message to Don Duggan-Haas here.” That is where to type your text. Once you
have added text, click on the blue button that looks like a conversation bubble located to the right of the
box. This will send your text to your contact.

20. To make a call: Click on the contact you wish to call. When the contact appears you will have two
green buttons to choose from. You can click on either the green “Call” button or the green “Video call”
button. This will allow you to call your contact and talk to them either with or without video. The video
call will look like this:

21. You can also chat and call at the same time. This is useful for sharing links while calling. It looks like
this:

“Personalize” button and select “Change your picture.”

25. You can “browse” for a picture already on your computer or “take a snapshot.” Browsing will allow
you to find a picture already on your computer by selecting the appropriate place. Taking a snapshot
will bring up this screen:

Click on the “Take a snapshot.” It will show you a series of boxes at the bottom that serve as the
countdown then take the picture. You can click on the button that says “save” or “try again” after the
photo is taken. Once you have selected a picture click on “ok” and you have added a picture to Skype!

How to Remove Windows Messenger From the Task Bar

Windows Messenger is a communication tool that allows you to chat with other users. By default, Windows Messenger launches automatically when you start your computer and displays its icon on the taskbar. Step 4

Now what to do about it? Fight back! It is your computer not a hackers paradise, so take it back.

How do I know what information has been taken?

1 It is very hard to tell what has been taken. Not every infection steals your data. Some just serve unwanted ads.
2. Others reroute your search result to alternate Web sites you don't want to see. Others log your every keystroke.
3. The anti-virus vendors have extensive databases about what the known infections do and don't do. Check with them to see what kind of damage may have been done to your machine.

Creating a disc image from a boot CD is a good way to back up your operating system recovery data in case of computer failure. This image can be stored on another computer, another flash drive, or burned onto a blank CD. It will contain all the data on the original CD so that you can boot from it in case of operating system problems. Two of the best choices for doing this are the popular Nero software and the free ISO Recorder, but most CD burning programs will allow you to create an image.

Step 1

Insert the original boot CD into your disc drive.

Download and install Nero if you have not done so already. The full version costs $59.99. For a free alternative, see the section labeled "Creating a Boot Image with ISO Recorder."

You boot up your PC one day and there is a password prompt that you have never seen before. Your computer won't let you log on, but don't worry. I am going to teach you some tricks to bypass this annoying feature. If you have the manual that came with the computer, read it; there will be information specific to this setting. These step do not have to be completed in order.

Step 1

First, remove the case to look at the motherboard, so we can try resetting the CMOS battery. This battery looks a shiny little disk the size of a nickel. Pry the battery free gently, and reinsert the battery after 10 minutes. If this worked and you don't see the password prompt, you don't need any more steps; the problem is fixed. In my experience, two or more additional steps might be necessary depending on the make of the BIOS. Unfortunately, they don't all respond to the same tricks.

Step 2

Next, now that the case is already removed, locate the jumpers near the edge of the board or near the CPU or the CMOS battery. Once located, find the label that will say clear CMOS, or clear password, etc. Place the jumper over the pins and boot. If this works, no more steps are needed. If it doesn't work, read on.

Step 3

The third step to try is to enter a password. When you receive the password prompt, try one of the following passwords. If you have an Award BIOS, try these; AWARD PW, ALFAROME, or _award. If you have Phoenix BIOS try, CMOS, PHOENIX, or BIOS.

If none of these things have worked, as a last resort, try a software utility that resets system passwords. These utilities can be found online.

The problem comes from having a corrupted version of that file. If you have a Windows XP CD, fixing the corrupted file is simple. If you do not, it becomes a little more challenging, but with the right know-how, you can accomplish it.

Step 1

Click the "Start" button and choose the "Run" option. Copy the following command into the box that opens:

mmsys.cpl

Step 2

Mark the check box that says "Place volume icon in the taskbar," if the command runs properly. If you get an error message that says Sndvol32.exe is corrupted or damaged, skip to step 4.

Step 3

Click the "OK" button and check your taskbar to make sure the volume icon is there and the volume control works properly.

Step 4

Download the sndvol32.exe program from a file sharing site like 4shared.com. Microsoft does not provide an official download for sndvol32.exe.

Save and expand the downloaded file to the c:\windows\system32\ folder. If you have the file there already, a pop-up window asks if you want to overwrite it. Push the button that indicates you do.

Tired of you computer running slow? Before you throw it out the window, try these simple steps to get it moving again!

Run a virus scan program to make sure you don't have a virus. You can download "AVGFree" or "PCTools" for free. See the resource links below to download these programs.

Run a malware program to make sure you don't have any malware. You can find a free one called "ThreatFire" in the resource links below.

Step 3

Remove Some Programs You Don't Need:

Go to your "Start Menu" in the bottom left hand corner of the screen. Click it, then click "Control Panel", then "Add/Remove Programs." Uninstall any programs you aren't using or don't need by clicking on the program name and clicking the "Uninstall" button at the top of the screen. Confirm that you want to uninstall and repeat for each program you can do without. I highly suggest not uninstalling anything if you don't really know what it is.

Step 4

Prevent Unnecessary Programs from Starting up With Windows and Running in the Background:

For Windows xp
Click on the "Start Menu", then click "Run." Type in "msconfig" and press enter. The "System Configuration Utility" will open up. Click on the "Startup" tab. Uncheck any program that you don't want to start with Windows. Once you are done, press "OK."

For Windows Vista
Once you have done this, go out to your desktop (close the "Add/Remove Programs" window). Click on the "Start Menu" at the bottom left again and click "Control Panel." In the control panel, under "Programs" choose "Startup Programs." This will open "Windows Defender" See the program list on the left and click one that you don't need to startup when you turn your computer on. Click the "Disable" button to the right. This will prevent that specific program from running on startup. Too many programs running each time you use your computer can really slow it down. Preventing multiple programs from running when you start your computer is a huge way to make your computer run faster.

Step 5

Disk Cleanup

Run "Disk Cleanup" to Get Rid of Files You Don't Need:

Open the "Start Menu" at the bottom left of your screen and click "All Programs" or "Programs." Then, click "Accessories", then "System Tools", then "Disc Cleanup." Your computer will calculate how much space you can free up on the old hard drive. Once it is done calculating, choose the files you want to delete and press "OK" This may take a few minutes.

Step 6

Run "Disk Defragmenter" to Organize the Files on Your Hard Drive:

Open the "Start Menu" at the bottom left of your screen and click "All Programs" or "Programs." Then, click "Accessories", then "System Tools", then "Disk Defragmenter." Click "Defragment" This could take anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of hours or more, depending on how jumbled up your files are.
