The job of keeping your home clean during the spring will appear less daunting if you engage the services of experts for things such as upholstery cleaning, painting, or carpet cleaning, and following the spring cleaning tips offered in this write up.

1. Clean your stovetop and kitchen counters with a degreasing agent to remove tough stains

2. Label and fill plastic storage bins to organize and reduce clutter

3. Clean all screens without removing them by using a vacuum with an extending attachment.

4. Use a microfiber cloth on your windows to avoid all streaks.

5. Before using your vacuum, gather all rugs and shake them outside. For best results, hang rugs outside for several hours.

Healthy homemade Cleaning agent

Baking soda

This is the best cleaning agent in your kitchen. When the counter tops or stainless steel sinks are stained, wet them down, sprinkle baking soda over them and rub them with a clean wet rag. Rinse well and you will have a clean surface. For stubborn stains, you may need to let the baking soda sit for several minutes and then scrub. Using the same steps, you can clean burned-on stains from pots and pans. It will also remove stubborn coffee stains from coffee cups or other items.

Baking soda + 4 cups of warm water

Add 2 tablespoons baking soda to 4 cups of warm water to clean the inside and outside of the refrigerator. For stubborn spots, rub with baking soda paste. Rinse with a clean, wet cloth.

Vinegar

White vinegar does its part to keep the kitchen clean, too. Vinegar is a versatile ingredient that can safely be used anywhere in your home; it kills bacteria and cuts through soap residue. Run white vinegar full strength through your coffee maker. To get the vinegar odor out, run the coffee maker two or three times with clear water.

For a basic vinegar clean and shine antibacterial formula mix your own:

1 cup white vinegar +1 cup water + 5 drops liquid soap

Mix all ingredients, put in a spray bottle and use for cleaning kitchen and bathroom surfaces such as appliances, mirrors, stainless steel sinks, laminate counter tops and tile. Do not use this mixture on stone surfaces, as acids can etch and damage stone.

Mildew scrub

For a basic mildew scrub, mix one-fourth cup vinegar, 1/4 cup borax and 1 cup water in a spray bottle and shake well. Spray on surface and let the solution penetrate for several minutes before scrubbing and rinsing.

Glass Cleaner

For no-streak glass cleaner, mix 1/4 cup white vinegar, 1 tablespoon cornstarch and 1 quart warm water. Apply with a sponge or pour into spray bottle and spray on. For lint-free results, wipe dry with crumpled newspaper, buff to a shine.

Food Stains

Club soda is a great substitute for food stains on carpet. It must be used immediately to be effective. After removing all solids, pour the club soda on the stain. Blot with a clean rag. The soda’s carbonation brings the spills to the surface and the salts prevent staining.

Use Cinnamon sticks

Instead of grabbing a can or air freshener, try a natural approach. Place several small bowls of white vinegar around the room in inconspicuous locations. Cinnamon sticks are another way to freshen a room. On pretty days, just open windows and let the house air out.

In my first SAT test blog you learn little bit about the test and in my other coming blogs you will see some practice sample questions. (1-100)

What is SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) test?

All four-year colleges in the United States require the SAT Reasoning Test for admission. The SAT Reasoning Test was formerly known as either the Scholastic Aptitude Test or the SAT I, and is now commonly called the SAT test. The SAT test has been developed by the College Board to measure the academic skills that will be necessary for success in college.

This test, also known as the SAT Reasoning Test, is used in the application process to colleges and universities in the United States. The SAT test is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) at various locations across the country, and it is developed, published, and scored by the College Board.

SAT Process

The SAT test is given seven times a year in the United States. Specific test dates and test locations can be found online on the College Board's website. There are two ways to register for the SAT test, online or by mail. Online registration is completed on the website of the College Board. In order to register by mail, one needs a copy of the SAT Registration Booklet. This booklet can be obtained from a high school counselor, and it contains the registration form and envelope, as well as registration instructions. All fees must be paid when registering, whether online or by mail, and fee information can be found online or in the SAT Registration Booklet.

SAT test New Information

Types of SAT test

The SAT test has three sections: Critical Reading, Mathematics, and Writing.

The Critical Reading section

This lasts for 70 minutes, broken up into two 25-minute sections and a 20-minute section. Students will be presented with passages of varying length, followed by multiple-choice questions. These questions will evaluate the student's ability to complete sentences and evaluate a long passage. Analogies are no longer a part of the SAT test.

The Mathematics section

This test last for 70 minutes, broken up into two 25-minute sections and a 20-minute section. Students will be presented with questions in the following content areas: number and operations; algebra and functions; geometry; and statistics, probability, and data analysis. Some of the questions will be in multiple-choice format, while others will require the student to complete the problem on a special grid. Although students will be allowed to use a calculator in the Mathematics section, the test has been designed so that every problem can be completed without a calculator.

The Writing section

This is the newest addition to the SAT test; it lasts for 60 minutes, which are divided into 35 minutes of multiple-choice questions and a 25-minute essay. The multiple-choice questions will assess the student's ability to improve sentences and paragraphs, and identify linguistic errors. The short essay section will assess the student's ability to organize and express ideas, develop and support a thesis, and use language appropriately.

Besides the Critical Reading, Mathematics, and Writing sections, there will also be a 25-minute unscored section used to develop future versions of the exam.

The multiple-choice questions in this section may pertain to any of the three content areas. The short essay is always the first section of the SAT test, and the Writing multiple-choice questions are always the last; otherwise, the sections of the exam may be administered in any order. 138 of the questions on the exam will be scored; the raw score is the number of questions answered correctly minus a fraction of a point for every wrong answer. This raw score will then be converted into a scaled score. Students will receive scores for each of the three sections on a scale of 200 to 800. These scores are combined to calculate the total score. The SAT test is offered around seven times every school year at locations around the country.

SAT score calculation

For the critical reading section, the mathematics section, and the multiple choice part of the writing section, the raw score is computed in the following manner. One point is given to each correct answer, and one quarter of a point is subtracted for each incorrect multiple choice answer.

Zero points are given to incorrect student produced responses in the mathematics section.

The raw scores are then converted to scaled scores, which take into account varying degrees of difficulty on different test versions.

For the mathematics and critical reading sections, scaled scores range from 200 (low) to 800 (high). For the multiple choice portion of the writing section, scaled sub-scores range from 20 (low) to 80 (high).

For the essay portion of the writing section, two trained readers each score the essay holistically on a scale of one (low) to six (high). This gives total scaled sub-score that can range from two (low) to 12 (high).

For the writing section of the test, the scaled sub-scores for both the multiple choice and the essay are then combined to give an overall scaled score for the writing section, ranging from 200 (low) to 800 (high).

1 Water and Corn flour

With time If your silver has lost its shine this recipe will help you restore it. Prepare a thick paste of water corn flour and apply it onto the silver item. Let the mixture dry completely and rub it off with a towel to polish the surface and restore the shine of your jewelry and silverware. If you are out of corn flour you can substitute it with cream of tartar.

2 Ketchup

It is weird, but ketchup works great if you need to remove tarnish from silver. This method is good handy if you have only 1-2 silver items to clean. Squeeze a few drops of ketchup on a paper towel and gently rub the tarnished silverware or jewelry. If there is old, tarnish built up apply ketchup directly onto these areas and leave it for 15 minutes. After that rub with microfiber cloth and rinse with water. Some items like fancy candlesticks or silverware have more details. Use a soft toothbrush to reach between crevices and clean the tarnish.

3. Aluminum Foil + Baking Soda

This is one of the best recipes in our silver cleaning arsenal. The aluminum-soda bath is very useful when you need to clean more than one thing or bigger items – such as silver cutlery, candlesticks, or tableware. Cover the bottom of a large baking pan with aluminum foil, with the shiny side up. Use ceramic, or glass bakeware never metal one, to avoid unwanted chemical reactions. Fill with water and add baking soda. You need 1,5 tablespoons of soda for every gallon of water. Bring to boil and put the tarnished silver inside for 15 seconds. Take out the silver using kitchen tongs. Leave the silverware on paper towel to cool down. All tarnish is gone. For built up, stubborn tarnish you may have to repeat the procedure. Never use this recipe for jewelry with encrusted gemstones.

4. Aluminum Foil + Laundry detergent

This cleaning trick is appropriate for slightly tarnished silverware or silver jewelry. Line a bowl with aluminum foil and fill with hot water. Add a tablespoon of liquid laundry detergent and stir well. Drop your silver items inside and let them soak for a minute. Take the silver out with kitchen tongs, rinse with lukewarm water and lay on a paper towel to let the items dry.

5. Toothpaste

This is a classic, easy DIY silver cleaning recipe. Use non-gel and non-abrasive toothpaste. Squeeze a small amount of it on a soft cloth or paper handkerchief. Rub onto the jewelry or silverware with circular motions to polish it and clean off the tarnish. Leave it for 5 minutes and then rinse off the toothpaste with water. After this procedure the silver is clean and shiny as new.

This is my second blog on COVID19 vaccine. In this one, I will give you more information about Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine

The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 mRNA vaccine (Tozinameran or BNT162b2) is used to protect against COVID-19. This disease is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

The vaccine is approved for people who are 12 years of age and older. Its safety and effectiveness in people younger than 12 years of age have not yet been established.

Health Canada first authorized this vaccine with conditions on December 9, 2020, under the Interim Order Respecting the Importation, Sale and Advertising of Drugs for Use in Relation to COVID-19. On May 5, 2021, the authorization was expanded to include individuals aged 12 to 15.

How it works

mRNA vaccines teach our cells how to make a protein that will trigger an immune response without using the live virus that causes COVID-19. Once triggered, our body then makes antibodies. These antibodies help us fight the infection if the real virus does enter our body in the future.

‘RNA’ stands for ribonucleic acid, which is a molecule that provides cells with instructions for making proteins. Messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines contain the genetic instructions for making the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, which is found on the surface of the virus that causes COVID-19.

When a person is given the vaccine, their cells will read the genetic instructions like a recipe and produce the spike protein. After the protein piece is made, the cell breaks down the instructions and gets rid of them.

The cell then displays the protein piece on its surface. Our immune system recognizes that the protein doesn’t belong there and begins building an immune response and making antibodies.

How it is given

The vaccine is given by an injection (0.3 mL) into the muscle of the arm. For the vaccine to work best, you need to get 2 doses: a single dose and then a second dose 21 days later.

Immunity develops over time. It takes about 2 weeks to develop significant protection against COVID-19. For the greatest protection, you will need the second dose.

Clinical studies showed that, beginning 1 week after the second dose, the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID vaccine was:

95% effective in protecting trial participants aged 16 and above against COVID-19 and100% effective in participants 12 to 15 years old

Possible side effects

In general, the side effects observed during the clinical trials are similar to what you might have with other vaccines.

The side effects that followed vaccine administration in clinical trials were mild or moderate. They included things like pain at the site of injection, body chills, feeling tired and feeling feverish.

These are common side effects of vaccines and do not pose a risk to health.

As with all vaccines, there is a chance that there will be a serious side effect, but these are rare. A serious side effect might be something like an allergic reaction. Speak with your health professional about any serious allergies or other health conditions you may have before you receive this vaccine.

Health Canada has conducted a rigorous scientific review of the available medical evidence to assess the safety of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. No major safety concerns have been identify in the data that we reviewed.

Strategies to reduce the Health Risk of Daylight saving time Change (other home safety to do list)

On Sunday, March 10th, the clocks will be pushed forward one hour, which means everyone will lose an hour of sleep. According to experts, adjusting to the lost hour of sleep in the spring is harder than adjusting to the gained hour of sleep in the fall. With Daylight Savings approaching, some are excited for the start of longer and warmer days, while others are only thinking of the fact that this Sunday, Daylight Savings, they will lose an hour of sleep.

Aside from losing a precious hour of sleep, there are other health problems that seem to come after Daylight Savings Time. A study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, determined that after the Daylight Savings time change, risks of heart attacks actually rise.

Part1-Daylight saving and Health Issues

Many people say that daylight saving time affects their sleeping patterns and body clocks. Drowsiness, headaches and additional stress are among the complaints given by those who feel negatively affected by daylight saving time.

Heart Attack

Researcher found that incidences of heart attacks increased significantly for the first three week days after the transition to daylight saving time in the spring. In contrast, there were fewer incidences of heart attacks after the transition from daylight saving to standard time in the autumn. The study found that the most plausible explanation for the findings is the adverse effect of sleep deprivation on cardiovascular health.

Sleep pattern

Moreover, the study reported that transitions into daylight saving time could disrupt chronobiologic rhythms and influence the duration and quality of sleep, which lasts for many days after the shifts. According to the researchers, the study also provides a possible explanation for heart attacks most commonly occurring on Mondays. This study, titled Shifts to and from Daylight Saving Time and Incidence of Myocardial Infarction, was conducted by Imre Janszky and Rickard Ljungand and was published in The New England Journal of Medicine on October 30, 2008.

Another study, printed in Current Biology in 2007 and titled The Human Circadian Clock's Seasonal Adjustment Is Disrupted by Daylight Saving Time, indicates that the human circadian system does not adjust to daylight saving time and that its seasonal adaptation to the changing photoperiods is disrupted by the introduction of summer time. This disruption may extend to other aspects of seasonal biology in humans.

Mental health/suicides

Two studies give a different light to the impact of daylight saving time on the human condition, particularly regarding mental health. Both studies were published in 2008. One study linked daylight saving time with suicide rates, while the other study found that it had no effect on manic episodes.

The first study, titled Small shifts in diurnal rhythms are associated with an increase in suicide: The effect of daylight saving, used Australian suicide data from 1971 to 2001 to determine the impact on the number of suicides of a one-hour time shift due to daylight saving. The results confirm that male suicide rates rise in the weeks following the commencement of daylight saving compared to the weeks following the return to Eastern Standard Time (EST) and for the rest of the year. After adjusting for the season, prior to 1986 suicide rates in the weeks following the end of daylight saving remained significantly increased compared to the rest of autumn. This study suggests that small changes in Chrono biological rhythms are potentially destabilizing in vulnerable individuals.

Manic episodes

The other study, called Daylight saving time transitions and hospital treatments due to accidents or manic episodes, found that transitions into or out of daylight saving time had no significant effect on the incidence of accidents or manic episodes. The study explored transitions in and out of daylight saving time and its effect on accidents and manic episodes in Finland during 1987 to 2003.

Part 2-What are Health Solutions?

1. Brisk walk

Exercise in form of a brisk walk or run can help people adjust to the advanced clocks. Biologist David Glass of Kent State University (cited in ABC News) suggests that a brisk walk or run stimulates the serotonin release in the brain and other types of neurotransmitters that will phase-advance the clock.

2. Exposure to bright natural light

Another suggestion is to gain exposure to bright natural light for an hour or two. According to Harvard University Gazette, people can adjust their daily rhythms by sitting in front of "light boxes", which are banks of fluorescent bulbs that emit two to three times more light than found in a typical room at home. This type of light is bright white light.

3. Low dosage melatonin

Researcher suggest that to take low dosage melatonin supplements to boost melatonin levels, as melatonin regulates cycles of sleep and wakefulness (although it is best to consult with a qualified health care professional on this matter); and to eat earlier – tricking the body to think it is later by eating dinner early (and avoiding caffeine and alcohol) may help to fall asleep sooner.

4. Using medical devices

On another health note, in March 2008 Health Canada reminded people using medical devices or systems with internal clocks to check that they continued to worked properly during the daylight saving switch. Examples of medical devices that could be affected by the change include (but are not limited to): implanted pacemakers/defibrillators with sleep modes that can only be adjusted by physicians; halter monitors, used to continuously record heartbeat; and glucose monitors that store data on glucose levels. Though users of these devices may be inconvenienced by the need to reset equipment timers, there is no safety risk to users of these devices, according to Health Canada.

5. Stick to your normal routine. Go to bed at the same time you normally would, and wake up at the same time.

6. Children should go about their routines normally as well, including eating and nap times.

7. Drive carefully to work Monday morning because your internal clock may be off, even if you feel fine.

8. Expose yourself and your family to sunlight - it encourages energy and makes you feel awake.

All year long, make sure you are getting the adequate amount of sleep, not just during Daylight Savings Time.

Expert says

If you regularly are getting seven to eight hours of sleep, you're likely to have fewer problems adjusting to the time change. However, if you are sleep-deprived already, getting by on just six or seven hours of sleep a night, you'll probably feel more fatigued than usual on Sunday morning.

Part 3-Home safety to do list- SPRING FORWARD

The weekend most Canadians spring forward one hour is also the ideal time to tackle seasonal safety projects. A lot of the routine maintenance on your home and car should be done twice a year, so what better times to start checking items off your "to-do" list?

AROUND THE HOUSE

• Replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and test both devices to make sure they are in working order. Tip: Don't toss the batteries; there may still be juice in them. They can be used in children's toys, media players or electronic devices. Squeeze out every drop of power, then recycle them.

• Clean gutters and downspouts to remove debris that may have accumulated during the winter. If clogged, spring showers can wreak havoc and possibly cause leaks.

• Hopefully you'll soon be using your BBQ. Check the tank and hose for leaks or cracks and replace if necessary. Don't forget to fill the tank up while you're at it because you never know when the weather might be ideal for the first BBQ of the season!

• Go through your medicine cabinet for expired medication. Your pharmacist should be able to either take your old medications or provide you with information about where to dispose of them.

• Inventory your home's first aid kit and replace items that are expired, or replenish items like bandages that may be running low.

• Switch your incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent lights (CFLs). Although initially more expensive, CFLs save you money in the long run because they use 75% less electricity and can last up to 10 times longer.

IN YOUR CAR

• Do not remove your car safety kit! Keep it in your car for the whole year. You never know when you might need that flashlight or those jumper cables.

• Change your wiper blades. They should be replaced every six months.

• A change of season equals a change of oil. This will help to ensure your car operates at peak efficiency.

• Your car's belts and hoses have dealt with extreme cold, snow, salt and sand in the last few months. Get them checked to make sure everything is connected properly and running smoothly.

• If you change your tires seasonally, you'll want to soon consider putting your summer tires on. A good rule of thumb is to put your summer tires on when the temperature is consistently above 7°C. Reside in Quebec? Don't switch your tires until after March 15th; otherwise you could face fines ranging from $200 to $300.

• If you don't change your tires seasonally, check your tire pressure and treads. If your tire pressure is off you'll notice irregular and uneven wear on your treads, reduced vehicle handling or decreased gas mileage.

Why we all get cough?

Coughing is the body's way of removing foreign material or mucus from the lungs and upper airway passages.

Coughing is a reflex action started by stimulation of sensory nerves in the lining of the respiratory passages - the tubes we use to breathe.

When a person coughs, there is a short intake of breath and the larynx (the voice box) closes momentarily. The abdominal and chest muscles used for breathing contract, which in turn increases the pressure needed to drive air out the lungs when the larynx re-opens.

Coughs have distinctive traits you can learn to recognize. A cough is only a symptom, not a disease, and often the importance of your cough can be determined only when other symptoms are evaluated.

What are causes of Cough?

Coughing usually means there is something in the respiratory passages that should not be there. This can be caused by breathing in dust particles in the air or when a piece of food goes down the wrong way.

It could also be a sign that an infection in the lungs is making the respiratory passages produce phlegm.

The common cold

This is a frequent cause of acute cough that usually settles in less than three weeks.

Bacterial or viral infections

These infections in the lungs, e.g. acute bronchitis, pneumonia, whooping cough, croup in children

Severe illnesses

This can be due to pneumonia, acute heart failure or pulmonary embolism (a clot in the blood vessels of the lung).

I like this one and because this is very easy to use. To make this Mix 1-2 tsp. of pure home made turmeric powder in warm milk and drink it twice a day for coughs of a bacterial origin. Within 2 days your cough will be gone by using this method.

2. Honey and white pepper Tea

Take one tea spoon of pure honey and to it add a pinch of grounded white pepper. Regular usage of this 2-3 times a day for about 4-5 days will cure your cough. This is one of the important home remedies for cough. Honey when taken with white pepper will loosen the mucous and make you spit the mucus. This will be helpful in throwing the irritating substances of the trachea and help you in treating cough.

3. Red Raspberry drink

Drinking red raspberry, honeysuckle, or liquor ice tea with honey is helpful in treating cough in 2-3 days.

4. Honey plus orange juice

Take 2 tablespoons of honey and mix it in one cup of orange juice and drink it.

5. Homemade syrup

Prepare a cough syrup from baked onion juice, comfrey tea, and honey. Drink it daily and your cough will subside.

6. Vodka and honey

Before going to bed just take a spoonful of honey with few drops of vodka or brandy in it.

7. Ginger Tea

If you have cough due to cold then just drink tea made of ginger 3-4 times a day or just eat raw ginger, this will subside your cough.

8. Gargle with warm water

You may also gargle with warm water to which lot of salt is added as many times as possible during the day. This will help you to clear phlegm caught in the throat.

9. Onion Juice and Honey

Mix 5 ml of onion juice with 10 ml of pure honey. Take this mixture at least twice a day. This will relieve your cough and will also help in soothing throat.
