AVG Internet Security 2013 is a capable security suite which does a generally very good job of protecting your PC from dangers, both on and offline.

At the program's core is AVG's strong antivirus engine. A little more accurate in this release, and with significantly reduced scanning times, this monitors every file you access, detecting and removing malware before it can cause any damage. And, conveniently, Whole Computer scans now look for and remove rootkits, as well: you don't have to run a separate scan to locate them.

The suite also includes a firewall, which protects you from network attacks and monitors running programs to make sure malware can't "phone home". A key improvement here is that this now works almost entirely automatically, so you're unlikely to be hassled with pop-ups and alerts any more.

The spam filter is also significantly enhanced. The last edition blocked only 55% of our test junk emails; AVG Internet Security 2013 has raised the detection rate to an impressive 88%.

And the suite also benefits from a new Windows 8-style interface. While this looks a little plain, we found it simple to use, with the various tiles delivering quick access to the program's various functions and features. An Options menu allows you to carry out just about any Internet Security Suite action in just a couple of clicks, and if you're still a little confused then a good local Help file will quickly point you in the right direction.

The news isn't all quite so good. Previously AVG Internet Security was able to add icons to results from all the main search engines, highlighting dangerous sites so that you'd know not to click their links. Now, these icons only appear when you use AVG's own Secure Search, either via the suite's browser toolbar, or by changing your browser search page. (AVG Internet Security 2013 will set this up by default during installation, but if you'd rather it leave your browser untouched then choose the Custom Installation option and you can turn the relevant options off.)

Fortunately, the suite does include other technologies to help keep you safe online. AVG's LinkScanner module vets web pages before they're displayed in the browser, for instance, and blocked a little more than half of our test malicious URLs. And if something does get downloaded then it'll be vetted by the antivirus engine, which will detect and remove most dangerous files.

And so, on balance, AVG Internet Security 2013 looks like a solid move forward. Not everyone will like the slightly plain interface, and browsing protection still needs work, but otherwise the suite is faster, more accurate and smarter than before, and it does a generally good job of keeping your PC safe from harm.

Another big addition is the new Automatic Exploit Prevention engine, which aims to prevent malware from using vulnerabilities in Flash, Java, Adobe Reader and other common applications.

Other improvements include more accurate spam blocking, better detection of phishing sites, smaller update files for faster processing, and reduced demands on your system resources (typical RAM use when running in the background was no more than 40MB on our test PC).

And you get plenty of essential bonus tools. The Vulnerability Scan checks your system for missing security updates or poorly configured settings, for instance. The Network Monitor lets you know which applications are using your internet connection. And there's an ad blocker, privacy tools, a Windows troubleshooting module, and more.

Despite all this power, though, Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 remains generally easy to use (the firewall handles everything itself, for instance; you never see any pop-ups or alerts). Whether you're a novice or a PC expert, it's definitely worth a closer look.

Just over two months after the standard GNOME edition of Linux Mint 12 arrived, Linux Mint project lead developer Clement Lefebvre has announced the KDE edition of version 12 of the popular Linux Mint operating system, code-named "Lisa". Based on Ubuntu 11.10, Linux Mint 12 KDE includes version 4.7.4 of KDE as its default desktop environment;KDE SC 4.8 was released last week.

New and updated packages include version 8.0 of the Thunderbird email client, Firefox 8.0, LibreOffice 3.4.3, version 2.4.3 of the Amarok music player and organiser, and VLC 1.1.12. Like the GNOME edition, it includes DuckDuckGo as its default search engine; the move comes as part of the project's first income-raising partnership. The new version is also the project's first KDE release to be available to download as Hybrid ISO images, which can be used to create a bootable USB drive using the dd command. A tutorial for installing Linux Mint via USB is provided.

The developers note that the Moonlight plugin – the open source implementation of Silverlight for Linux – has been removed from the release because of a bug that caused Firefox to crash; the issue has been fixed in an upstream release which users can install from the project's site.

VoIP Hopper is a GPLv3 licensed security tool, written in C, that rapidly runs a VLAN Hop into the Voice VLAN on specific ethernet switches. VoIP Hopper does this by mimicking the behavior of an IP Phone, in Cisco, Avaya, and Nortel environments.

This requires two important steps in order for the tool to traverse VLANs for unauthorized access. First, discovery of the correct 12 bit Voice VLAN ID (VVID) used by the IP Phones is required. VoIP Hopper supports multiple protocol discovery methods (CDP, DHCP, LLDP-MED, 802.1q ARP) for this important first step. Second, the tool creates a virtual VoIP ethernet interface on the OS. It then inserts a spoofed 4-byte 802.1q vlan header containing the 12 bit VVID into a spoofed DHCP request.

Once it receives an IP address in the VoIP VLAN subnet, all subsequent ethernet frames are “tagged” with the spoofed 802.1q header.

Unofficial Language Packs for Windows 8 Preview

While English is not my greatest strength in terms of language ability, but for the current Windows 8 pre-release version, which is officially available, ranging from the knowledge.Exclusively in English is the Developer Preview Windows 8 are as stated and available language is not provided. Here you will have to wait for the first public beta version, if one wants to use his upcoming Windows 8 and once in his own language.

Firefox Aurora is the equivalent of Chrome’s cutting-edge Dev, which means it’s definitely not for the average user. It’s effectively an alpha build of the next version of Firefox – more stable than the nightly builds produced for developers, but still a long way off the relative stability of beta versions, never mind a final release. Make sure your computer is backed up before installing this, but once done, you can install it and get an early glimpse into the future of the Firefox browser.

It’s worth noting that Aurora can be installed alongside the stable release of Firefox and run separately, so you can test drive in conjunction with a final release of Firefox rather than in place of it (as is the case with Chrome). However, there will be an add-ons compatibility check each time you switch versions, so bear this in mind.

According to the Mozilla blog, Aurora will be synchronised with the Nightly Build server every 5-6 weeks, which means it’s significantly less stable at the start of this period than at the end when its changes migrate into the Beta channel.

And what new features can you expect? The good news is that some of the interface changes that were hoped for in Firefox 9 are starting to migrate from the Firefox UX channel at long last. The Location Bar has been tweaked, with the forward button removed from the bar, although other tweaks - the loss of the Home button and a streamlined dropdown list - appear to have missed the boat.

Firefox 10 will appeal to web developers, with a number of new features making their debut in Aurora, most notable an Inspect option that allows developers to visually inspect pages with the help of a Highlighter tool that makes checking a page's CSS and HTML code that much easier. This feature, originally planned for Firefox 4, has been overhauled since its release was postponed earlier in the year.

Firefox Beta is the build for those who like a little bit of jeopardy, but who don’t want to risk everything by trying out Firefox Aurora, the early alpha build of Firefox. Firefox Beta gives you a sneak peek at the next version of Firefox six weeks ahead of its final release, offering a relatively stable build that’s not quite ready for primetime, but still pretty solid.

Whereas Firefox Aurora installs as a completely separate application alongside your existing Firefox installation, Firebox Beta will replace the stable build. Should you subsequently wish to go back to the safer version, you’ll need to manually download the stable version and install it over the top of the beta build.

Confirm which build you have by selecting About Firefox from the Firefox menu or button (it’s inside the Help menu if using the Firefox button).

What’s new in Firefox 9 Beta? In terms of noticeable features, practically nothing. However, it’s behind the scenes where Firefox development is currently being pushed, and version 9 introduces support for “type inference”, which in layman’s terms means the browser is now capable of processing Javascript code much quicker – up to 44 per cent quicker according to Mozilla’s own tests – than previous versions, meaning that Javascript apps should be noticeably quicker to the end user.

Today Apple released their first update to iOS 5 ahead of expectations. Among the usual bug fixes, this update brings aid to the dwindling battery life experienced by many owners of the iPhone 4S. Users of the beta have reported that the improvements have been ideal and they can make it through the day no problem. If you weren't lucky enough to test it out early, go run Software Update on your iPhone (Settings > General > Software Update) and get it right now. It took a few minutes for our phones to realize an update was available so be patient and don't worry—it's there. iPad 1 users will also be glad to know that the update brings back multitasking gestures—something that previously required a little hacking to enable.

Note: Jailbreakers should not upgrade until there's an iOS 5.0 downgrade option. Keep an eye on the iPhone Dev Team's blog and Twitter feed for progress updates.

Download Firefox 8 Final

Firefox 8 officially releases on Mozilla's site on November 8th, but technology blog GHacks discovered this morning that the Firefox 8.0 final version is already available for download for Windows, Mac, and Linux on Mozilla's FTP servers.

The biggest new feature is that Firefox itself now handles third party add-on installations to avoid security problems from sketchy extensions. Also included in the new version is built-in support to search Twitter messages in the browser's address bar.

Only a few of the normal Firefox mirror sites have version 8 available and the FTP servers will probably be hit hard between now and the official release on Tuesday. If you're not in a hurry you may want to wait for then.

Firefox 8.0 is a free download for Windows, Mac, and Linux from Mozilla's FTP server at the link below.

What is Rootkit.Duqu.A?

Rootkit.Duqu is a new e-threat that combines the technology of the military-grade Stuxnet with an advanced keylogger and backdoor application. Due to its rootkit technology, the piece of malware can stay hidden from the user, the operating system’s defense mechanism and even from regular antivirus utilities.

Just like its predecessor – the Stuxnet rootkit – Rootkit.Duqu.A is digitally signed with a stolen digital certificate that has been revoked in the meantime. This allows it to install itself on both 32- and 64-bit operating systems on Windows platforms ranging from Windows XP to Windows 7.

The Duqu rootkit runs on the computer for 36 days and collects any kind of information entered via the keyboard, including passwords, e-mail or IM conversations. After the “surveillance” period ends, the rootkit gracefully removes itself from the system, along with the keylogger component
