How To use Photoshop eBook Cover Action Scripts and Templates

Photoshop eBook Cover Action Scripts User Manual

Just in case you are new to Photoshop, here's step-by-step guide on how to use the Photoshop ecover action scripts provided by ecover-templates.com.

You need Photoshop to run the actions.
Adobe Photoshop 30 days free trial can be download from here

Step 1- Loading The EBook Cover Action Into Your Photoshop

1-Fire up Photoshop and and make sure the Actions palette is visible. If not, go to main menu bar, Window > actions to visualize it.

2- Open the Actions palette, click on the little triangle button as shown below

3- Click on the "Load Actions..." from the drop down menu to locate and load the action script (ATN File) that you had download previously.

Then, you can see the ebook cover action get listed in your Action palette.

Step 2- Using the Photoshop EBook Cover Action Script

First, Create a blank template by
1- Select the action of your desire
2- Click on Action / Step 1 from the dropdown menu
3- And click on the Play button as shown
below.

Give a few seconds for the action to execute.

This creates blank flat template. You may now start filling the template with your own design.

I strongly suggest you to make each of your graphic and text into separate
layers. This will make your work much easier in the process.

I come up with this

Second, Transform your flat 2D into stunning 3D ebook cover

When you're done with with your design,
click on the Action 2 and then the play button

Wait a few seconds for the action to execute thoroughly before start to crop and resize the image into your desire size. Then save for web.

How To Put ECover Templates Into Action

After downloading the templates pSD files into your computer, you need to unzip it using zip unzip software. You can get 45 days free trial version of winzip here.

1- Load the PSD file into your Photoshop as shown in Step 1 above.

2- Choose your action from the Action palette

3- Skip Action 1 and play the Action 2 as shown below.

Done!

At first glance, this ecover box seems similar to any typical
software box cover available out there. But a closer look will tell a
different.

The front face of the software cover box /ebox are designed wider
into square shape ; equal size of length and height. This mean you
can use this action figure to design a product cover with long title
line and substitle that does not fix well to conventional box cover.

Also suitable to use for virtual CD box, like a video tutorial set or
collection containing multiple CDs. Or a CD with manual book inside.

For time being, I'm using Adobe Photoshop CS, with Windows XP.
So, the actions provided supposed to work well in Photoshop CS,
CS2, CS3,or later versions of both.

I'm planning forward to create more ebook cover action scripts using Photoshop 7 in near future to serve wider audiences.

But what keep me stand back is that Photoshop v7 and CS, CS2, CS3 could have certain differences that bring to series of error messages while running the action script.

I'm not sure what really trigger this, but my wild guessing says that there are uncompatible of OS and Photoshop between users with the action script designers. Rarely it is caused by the ecover actions itself because the workflow of the actions are checked automatically during
designing process.

I've just finished creating our ecover actions complete with
compatible templates for this post.

Creating a good and functional actions is not as easy as I
thought. As I'm trying to give better and better out of me
every time (I'm quite new to this and still in my learning
curve).I realized it took amount of imagination, creativity
as well as time, perseverance, persistent and patience.

Our goal is to create a realistic looking cover as close as
possible. And the main concern for actions is 'perspective' as
it will make or break your whole design.

Creating a nice and professional looking template is another
challenge. This is actually the part where the 'designer
block'syndrome strikes.

Now I see why professional graphics designer charge over a
hundred dollars for their ecover action script collections and
add additional charge for templates that sold seperately.

If you are serious on making money online, Adobe Photoshop
(version 7, CS, CS2, CS3 or above preferred) and super quality

Transform flat ecover templates (ecT hardback)
to 3D Images Step-by-steps.

To do this we require :

1-Flat templates of hardback
You can download this from my previous post
"eBook Cover Hardback Templates"

2-eCT action script:
Can be download from my last post titled:
" eBook Cover (Hardback) Action Script Added"

Unzip ecT-hardback-templates files. Choose any of the PSD files
and drag it into photoshop.

At this point, You can insert your title, substitles by selecting the
relevent layer. Also add some graphics if necessary.

You need to load the action script first into photoshop as shown in
my last tutorial on " How to use eCT hardback actions script". Please
refer if you haven't load it yet.

In action pallette, go to the eCT hardback , skip Action 1, go straight
to Action 2 and click on play button.

It's that it!

How to Use eCover Actions Script

STEP 1- Loading the action files into your Photoshop

1- Download the actions

2- Unzip the files and place the .atn file
(in this case, eCT-hardback.ATN) on your desktop.
(for your own convenience)

3- Fire up your photoshop

4- Go to actions pallette, click on the small "play button"

look-alike located at the top right of the pallete.(refer pic

below)

This will open up a drop menu. Select "Load Actions..".
Find and click to your .ATN file (in this case, on the desktop)
to load it.

5- You'll see the .ATN files get listed in your action pallette.

STEP 2- Generates a flat template

In your action pallette, click on the arrow button of the ecT-

hardback. drop menu contains Action 1 and Action 2 shown up.

Click on Action 1. then click on play button at the bottom of the

pallette.

The script will run automatically for a few secs till pop up
massage saying" your step 1 completed" come up.

At this point you may start designing your cover by changing your

title, substitle, color, adding new layer etc.

Notes:

DO Not change your templates image size at this stage as this will cause

error running Action 2.

STEP 3- Render to 3D

When you're happy with your template design, we are going to render the

flat template to 3D.

Click to select Action 2.

Then, click on the play button.

Wait a few secs until the process completed.

Now, you may resize your 3D image to fit your need.

It's that easy.

How to Customize eCover Templates

In this tutorial, I'll show you how you can easily turn our free ebox templates provided into your own sales generating product cover.
The idea is to add text to the template and then transform it to the right perspective.

For this example, I will be using Abode Photoshop CS.
It should work well with CS2 and the latest CS3.

If you don't have Photoshop, you can download a
30 day trial version here.

Let's begin

Step 1

Fire up Photoshop and open any of your
software box template of choice. You
can do this by clicking on File > Open
or simply dragging-and-dropping the
file onto your work area.

Create a new layer

On your new layer, you may now start
adding text and graphics.

Step 2

Create a workspace border for front and
spine of your cover.To do this, click
on the move tool in the tool box.Then
click on the vertical ruler and drag a
guide line out to the edge point of the
cover.Repeat this to get 3 vertical
lines. The same goes with the horizontal
guide lines .Refer to the pic below.

If ruler are not visible on your screen,
View > Ruler

The imaginary gray area represents
front and red area as your cover spine.

You may now start adding text and graphics.
I suggest you use seperate layers for all of your text and additional
graphics. This will help you change your design in the process with ease.

I came up with this.

Step 3

We are going to merge all of our layers into single flat layer except the background (template) layer.

So,let's start.

In layer pallette, click-away the 'eye' sign for background layer.

Go to Layer < Merge Visible
Your layer pallette should look like this:

Click 'eye' on to re-visualize your background.

Step 4

Our intention is to separate the merged layer into two; front and spine layer.
Select front area using rectangular marquee tool.

Edit > Paste.

Move the layer to reposition it.Rename
the layer to 'front' if you wish to
( right-click on the layer > Layer Properties)

Now,click back to your previous merged
layer and repeat step 3 for spine.

By now,your layer pallette should look like this:

Now come the fun part- to align front and spine layers to match background
(template) perspective.

On front layer, Edit > Transform > Distort

Click on checkmark sign on upper right of your screen to confirm the changes you made.

Repeat on spine layer.

Clear off the guidelines by View < clear guides

Voila!

Step 6

Now you can make final adjustments and
save the completed ebook cover.

To crop the image, select the crop tool
near the top of the toolbar or press
'C' on your keyboard. Click and drag to
make your area-to-crop selection. Press
'Enter' or click on the checkmark when
you're happy with your selection.

To resize the image, click Image < Image Size.

To save the image, click File < Save for Web

Select the setting that looks the best
while keeping an eye on the filesize.

The goal is to get a good looking cover
with the smallest possible filesize for
a fast loading image on your website.

When you're done, click 'OK'.
