"Sensational" Saturday....Celebrate Earth Day!

This weekend gives us a chance to reflect on the beauty of the world that we live in. It's so easy to take it for granted sometimes. We're so fortunate to have so many things at our fingertips.... running water, flowering gardens, majestic mountains, oceans that not only provide a place for all of the sea creatures to live - but somewhere that we can go to as a family, soak up the sun and make some fun memories together. This weekend, let your children know how grateful you are for all of the gifts this world has to offer. Help them to develop an appreciation for it too, with some of these fun activities....

Make some "Chocolate Popcorn Trees!" If you're one of the very talented people that can mold chocolate into the trunk of a tree....more power to you! Another way you could do this, especially if you have little ones that like to "do it myself," would be to let them pick out their favorite candy bar for the tree trunk, add a popcorn ball to it and decorate with their favorite candy!

"Tradition" Tuesday... Top Ten Easter Traditions!

It's time for our....

"Top Ten!"

Since Easter is coming up this week, we decided it would be a great time to share a few of our favorite Easter Traditions. Some of them you may already do in your family....others you may not. We hope they'll get you into the Easter spirit!

Okay....here we go!

"THE BIG FAMILY DINNER ON EASTER SUNDAY" Our family LOVES food! Every holiday, birthday, etc. is always based around a great meal together. Growing up, we all sat around the HUGE dining table....there were 9 of us. Mom and Dad were BOTH great cooks...bonus! There was always plenty of leftovers and any friends that didn't have a place to go for Easter Dinner, were always welcome at our table. The main staple each year was a big HAM!
"EASTER EGG HUNT WITH ALL OF THE COUSINS" Now that we're all "grown up" (that's a matter of opinion!) and have our own little ones, we love any excuse to get together and "play!" Between all of us, we've added 14 new additions to the family over the years....with more on the way! So, you can imagine it's a very LOUD, but FUN group! We get HUNDREDS of plastic eggs and fill them with candy and prizes from the Dollar Store....the kids LOVE it! There's also one or two "Golden Eggs" each year that have money in them! I think this year we might even try the "Glow in the Dark" Easter Egg Hunt!
"EASTER BASKETS" In our family, nobody is too old for the Easter Bunny to bring them a Basket! Themed baskets are always fun. For the teenagers, we add things like cologne, lip gloss, gift certificates, etc....anything they have an interest in.....and of course Easter Candy! It just wouldn't be Easter without the Malted Milk Ball Easter Eggs (makes a great lipstick!) or Jelly Belly's!
"NEW EASTER OUTFITS" We've never been ones to wear Easter Bonnets, but a new dress or shoes is always fun! You can let the kids pick out their own things if they're at the age where they're REALLY picky....like mine. Or, you can let the Easter Bunny surprise them with something....if they still think your taste in clothes is cool....or they're too young to care!
"ACTIVITIES THAT REMIND KIDS OF THE REAL MEANING OF EASTER" Even though we love having fun with all of the typical Easter traditions....bunnies, chicks, eggs, baskets....we always remember the real reason for this special holiday. Jesus Christ came to earth, atoned for our sins and was resurrected. Because of him, we can live forever as a family after we die. That's a priceless gift that he gave....one that we're forever grateful for. It has new meaning to us, especially since both of our parents have passed on. Our Mom died when she was only 45 years old and our Dad died a little over a year ago. They instilled in us a deep love of family....one that we continue to carry on. Traditions help keep it together. Here's some fun things you can do with your kids to help them remember what Easter is really all about.... Resurrection Eggs,.... Resurrection Rolls,.... Mini Resurrection Garden,.... Jelly Bean Prayer.... and The Living Christ: A 30 Day Easter Countdown.
"DYE EASTER EGGS" This is one of our favorites! We usually do it the Saturday before Easter. They're great for Easter Egg Hunts, decorating around the house and of course, deviled eggs or egg salad sandwiches! Growing up, we always bought the little tablets of dye that you add to vinegar in a cup. We loved seeing how dark we could get them by leaving them in the dye a little longer! That was always fun, but now there's so many MORE creative things you can do....dying them in silk ties,.... putting chalkboard paint on them ....the possibilities are endless!
"EASTER DECOR" We LOVE decorating for the holidays and Easter is no exception. A beautiful tablescape for Easter Dinner is a given, but it always makes the home a little more festive when you put decorations up earlier in the month. Little bunnies and baskets placed here and there, bouquets of flowers, anything that says Spring is in the air works great!
"EASTER CRAFTS" It's fun to make a craft that can be added to the Easter decor that fills the house each year! One of my favorites that my Mom did with us when we were kids was wrapping string around a balloon, covering it with starch and letting it dry. Once it was dry, we got to pop the balloon....the best part! Then we got to create an "Easter Scene" in our "Magical Easter Egg!" She cut a round hole in the front of the egg and then we filled it with Easter grass, jellybeans, little bunnies, etc! I wish we still had them....but that was MANY years ago....not telling how many! But, at least we've still got the memory that will live on forever.
"ATTEND CHURCH TOGETHER ON EASTER MORNING" As kids get older and schedules get busier, we don't always make it to church each Sunday as a family. But, Easter is one time of the year that we make it happen. Sitting there together, hearing about the resurrection of Jesus Christ, reminds us once again how blessed we truly are. Not only do we have one another, but we're a part of a much bigger plan....an eternal one....with a loving Heavenly Father that really does care about each one of us, individually.
"WATCH THE ANNUAL EASTER CARTOON SPECIALS" This was one of my FAVORITE Easter traditions growing up! I used to look through the TV schedule and find out when all of the Easter Specials were going to be on. My favorite was "Here Comes Peter Cottontail!" Find out when the shows will be on in your area and have a "Movie Night" with the kids! Put them in their jammies, bring out the pillows and blankets, make some popcorn and break open a bag of their favorite Easter candy!

"Time to..." Thursday: Unclog those Drains!

Okay....I am REALLY excited about today's post! I discovered a talent I never even knew I had....apparently I'm a pretty good PLUMBER! I know....who would have guessed, right?!

Well, over the last couple of years it felt like we were CONSTANTLY dealing with a sink or tub that was always draining too slowly. My husband tried everything....nothing worked....not even Drano! Oh, it might have drained a LITTLE bit faster for a day or two, but that was it. Well, in one of my searches, I ran across an article that said to pour 1/2 cup of salt down a drain that was clogged, along with 1 quart of hot water. Sounded easy enough to me! So, I grabbed the salt and headed to the bathroom sink. First attempt....nothing much, but I noticed some "gunky" stuff starting to loosen up inside of the drain. I pulled it out with a coat hanger....cause there was NO WAY my hands were touching that stuff! (Ewww....my stomach turns just thinking about it!) Anyway, second attempt....it started draining a little quicker....then VOILA!! It worked!! FINALLY....an unclogged drain!! Woohoo!!

Then I decided that if it worked so well on the sink, it would probably do the same thing in the tub. Tried it once, nothing. Twice....nothing. Three times....still nothing. Oh well, at least it worked on my sink! So, I went back to my "searches" and ran across another technique for slow drains. This one suggested 1/2 cup of Baking Soda with 1/2 cup of Vinegar. So....I grabbed the Baking Soda and Vinegar and headed back to the tub! It said to pour them in and cover the drain with a wet rag for five minutes. Jen was at my house by this time and I filled her in on my little experiment! We waited....went back 5 minutes later and flushed it with hot water as it suggested. Well.....all it did was fill up my bathtub with MORE water that STILL wasn't draining.....darn it. I told Jen it looked like it wasn't going to work afterall. BUT THEN.....all of the sudden, the drain made a "suction" sound and WHOOOSH.....that water went down the drain so fast it looked like a mini tornado! IT WORKED!! I couldn't wait to tell my husband the good news....that his wife, (yes, the same one that grosses out at the sight of a hair in the sink or tub) fixed the drains!

Oh, and another bonus I discovered....apparently salt works pretty good at cleaning bathtubs too! I noticed that a small area where the salt had been from the first experiment, was suddenly cleaner than the rest of the tub. So, I decided to put it to the test. I sprinkled a little bit of salt, grabbed a wet rag and started wiping! I was surprised how easily it cleaned the tub....very little scrubbing at all! I think I might have just found a new favorite "cleaning product."

"Make a Craft" Monday...Easter!

"HIPPITY HOPPITY....EASTER'S ON IT'S WAY!!"

With Easter less than 2 weeks away, we decided we'd better get going on the Easter projects! To start with, we always like to have some kind of treat for each of the cousins. This year, we'll be making these "Carrots" for them. Very easy....just fill up a clear plastic icing bag with some orange gumballs or candy. Tie a green ribbon around the top and place them in a basket filled with Easter grass. You can even add some plastic eggs with treats inside of them too!

For Easter dinner, we prefer it to be a little more formal. We've always set up banquet tables in the family room, so that everyone can sit together. That's become a little more challenging now that the family is growing....there's almost 30 of us! This year, we may not be able to seat each person at the same table, but we CAN make sure that all of the tables have beautiful centerpieces and place settings. It's the small details that can really make a difference. We won't be breaking out the china and crystal...especially since we've discovered the disposable champagne glasses you can get at The Dollar Store! But, we will have a theme that ties everything together. Something simple like filling a basket with tulips and placing small bowls of candy around it, will work perfectly for the main table.

For the kids table, we want to add a little bit of fun! Their centerpiece will be also be tulips, but the vase will have candy in it for them to devour AFTER dinner. To make it you'll need two vases...one smaller than the other. Put the smaller vase inside of the large one. Layer jelly beans in the space between the two. Arrange the Peeps on top of the jelly beans and then arrange your flowers. Easy, beautiful...and yummy too!

The kids table will also have little jars of candy around the centerpiece, as well as a flower or Peep on top to tie it all together. This picture kind of gives you an idea of what we're talking about, except we'll use orange and yellow jelly beans and tulips to match the centerpiece.

And of course to top off the party, we'll have a big Easter Egg Hunt! Weather permitting it will be outside...but you never know in Utah. It's been known to snow the first part of April many times! "Food Friday".... April Fool's Food!

Can you believe it's almost April?! That means it's almost time for the one day a year that you can play pranks on everyone and totally get away with it! One of my favorites is when my sister called her husband at work and said he had a message from someone named Mr. Lyon. The number she gave him to call was for the zoo! Anything that can get a good laugh and doesn't hurt anyone is fair game on the 1st of April! Since we're a food lovin' family, we decided to find some fun foods to help celebrate April Fool's Day this year.

Here's what we came up with....

For the Hamburger Lovers: The "bun" is made from two peanut butter cookies. The "meat" is a brownie that's been cut into a circle. The "ketchup" is red icing drizzled around the brownie and the "lettuce" is shredded coconut that's been dyed green and sprinkled on top!

A "Well-Balanced" Dinner...April Fool's Style: The "Fish Sticks" are made from Kit Kat bars that have been rolled in Toasted Coconut. The "Peas" & "Baked Beans" are Jelly Bellies and the "Mashed Potatoes" are made from Vanilla Ice Cream with Caramel Sauce!

Do your kids ever want dessert first? Here's some "Cupcakes" for dinner! (The "Cupcake" is really Meatloaf!) As for the "Frosting".... Mashed Potatoes sprinkled with pink Sea Salt!

Love Italian Food? Here's some "Spaghetti & Meatballs".... April Fool's Style: The "Spaghetti" is made by squeezing frosting through the corner of a baggie. Move it all around the cupcake to create the "Noodles." Cover as much of the cupcake tops as possible and place them close together for the best look. Next, you'll use the Ferrero Rocher fine hazelnut chocolates as the "Meatballs." For the "Sauce" microwave a small bowl of strawberry or other berry flavored jam with a small amount of water to dilute, for about 30 seconds. Dip each chocolate in the jam, cover well, and set on top of each cupcake. Drizzle the jam over the cupcakes to create the look of spaghetti sauce. Grate some white chocolate over the top for the "Parmesan Cheese!"

"Fried Chicken Dinner"....April Fool's Style: The "Chicken Drumsticks" are made by frosting a cupcake and topping it with a donut hole. Frost that too, then coat with crushed corn flakes. Melt white chocolate and put it into a baggie. Snip the corner of the baggie and drizzle it onto waxed paper, making the shape of a "bone." Refrigerate until hardened and then stick the "bone" in the top of the cupcake. For the "Mashed Potatoes" spread a generous amount of vanilla frosting over the cupcakes. Create a "well" in the center of each one. To make the "Butter" place a yellow Starburst in the "well" and spoon Caramel Topping over it for the "Gravy." For the "Corn" spread yellow frosting over the cupcakes and place "Kernels" on top. Cut the yellow part off of some Candy Corn to make the "Corn Kernels." The "Pudding" is made by spreading chocolate frosting over some cupcakes and adding candy sprinkles.

"Time to..." Thursday: Spring Into Cleaning!

Ready for a little Spring Cleaning?

Here are five things to spruce up the house (and you) in no time!

1. It always feels good to do a little rearranging this time of year. I love hanging new pictures, but my husband prefers to do it himself...due to the zillions of nail holes I've been known to leave in the wall. as I "eyeball" where it's supposed to go! Well, I think we may have solved that problem for good. The next time you want to hang some pictures, use the "toothpaste" technique. Simply put a dot of toothpaste on the back of the frame where the nail will hang from. Next, hold the picture on the wall where you want it to go. The toothpaste will stick to the wall and show you EXACTLY where to put the nail in! Can't get much easier than that!

2. How's your linen closet looking...or the place you store your bath towels? Time to organize it a little bit? Maybe fold a few of the towels that the kids tried to throw on top....only their aim was a little off? Yep, we know how that goes! Before you straighten up those piles, give the towels a new lease on life by running them through the washing machine....once with hot water and a cup of vinegar, then again with hot water and a half-cup of baking soda. That will strip the residue that's built up on them over the years. It will leave them smelling much fresher and they'll also be alot more absorbent.

3. Next, let's move into the kitchen. Has it been awhile since it's had a good cleaning? Well, you're about to see how easy it can be to make it sparkle like new again with the "miracle" of baking soda and peroxide! Put 1/4 cup of baking soda in a bowl and add enough peroxide to make a paste. Grab a sponge and start rubbing....it cleans EVERYTHING! Stove, oven, pans, stainless steel appliances, handles on the refrigerator door, cookie sheets....you name it! (Here's a Before/After shot.)

4. Now let's take a look at the walls. Any fingerprints, crayon, pencil or ink from the little aspiring artists? No worries. Sprinkle some baking soda on a damp sponge and wipe it clean!

5. Now that the house is freshened up, you deserve a little pampering too! How about Dr. Oz's Flawless Skin Mask?

Mash up 6-12 non-coated aspirins and combine with freshly squeezed lemon juice....or the kind from the bottle....they both work!
Let the aspirin dissolve until it turns into a paste.
Apply the mask and leave on for 10 minutes.
Remove with cotton balls dipped in baking soda and water.

"Food" Friday ... 7 Slow Cooker Meals!

"What's for Dinner?!"
If we had a dollar for every time

we've heard that phrase, we'd be able to hire a personal chef!

But, as long as there's little mouths to feed,

I think it's pretty safe to say, we're going to keep on hearing it!

How cool would it be to have an answer ready for them
every time those three little words were muttered?

If you haven't jumped on the "menu train" yet,

you're in for a pleasant surprise!

To help you get started, we've come up with
a week's worth of super simple Dinner ideas!

And the best part?

While you're out running around all day,
That good 'ol Crock Pot that's been feeling a little neglected lately,
will have dinner ready and waiting for you!

After the daily carpool is completed,
rush hour traffic has eased up a little,
dance lessons, soccer practice,

....you know the drill....

you can walk through the door at the end of the day,

knowing that a hot, healthy meal is just minutes away!
That alone will let you breathe a sigh of relief

...especially when you hear those three little words, yet again...
"WHAT'S FOR DINNER?!"

Yep, life will suddenly seem a whole lot simpler....
all because you took a couple of minutes in the morning

to throw a few ingredients into the Crock Pot!

"Food Friday" - Homemade Oreos

It's late...

I have a cold...

& I could really use some dessert right now.

So, I thought I'd share one of my favorite dessert recipes with you!

~Homemade Oreo Cookies~

Picture your typical store bought oreo cookie,

only these are softer, have more frosting & warm!

All you need is:

2 boxes of Devils Food cake mix

3/4 cup vegetable oil

4 eggs

either your favorite vanilla frosting recipe

or I personally love the store bought tubs!

Mix the first 3 ingredients together with a fork

to make a stiff dough.

Roll into quarter size balls.

Bake on cookie sheet at 375 degrees for 6-8 minutes.

Once cookies have cooled enough to handle,

take vanilla frosting

spread on one cookie & "sandwich" with a second cookie!

Yummy!

It would even be cute with St. Patrick's Day coming up to

add some food coloring to the frosting to make them green!

Raise your hand if you love cleaning the bathtub?

***ME!!***

Ask me that a week ago

and I might not have been so quick to answer!

I've always used Mr. Clean Magic Eraser

and they worked pretty good,

but still not as well as I would have liked.

I came across this concoction on Pinterest the other day

and just had to try it!

It sounded too good to be true,

but the reviews were all coming in positive!

Ready for this?

Equal parts of Liquid Dishwashing Detergent

and Distilled White Vinegar....that's it!

Let me tell you, I was a skeptic

and had the PERFECT bathtub to try it on on....the teenagers!

They were gone, so I decided it was the perfect time

to mix up this little concoction and see if it really worked.

(They would DEFINITELY notice if it did!)

So, I grabbed a Windex bottle that was almost empty,

rinsed it out really well

and added about 1 inch of Liquid Dishwashing Detergent

with 1 inch of Distilled White Vinegar.....

how's that for measuring?!

A lot of the reviews said that you HAD to use BLUE Dawn.

Well, I didn't have any. I had yellow Ajax!

I figured I had nothing to lose by seeing if that worked instead.

I had read one review that said it was the vinegar

that was actually the active ingredient

and the dishwashing detergent just kept the vinegar

from running down the sides of the tub!

So, if that was true,

the Ajax or any other liquid detergent should work!

Anyway, I shook up the bottle and off to the tubs I went!

I sprayed them down, waited a half hour,

went back with some damp paper towels and VOILA!!

It SERIOUSLY worked!!

I didn't even have to scrub the tub....

it just wiped that ring away and left a sparkling clean finish!

Yes, the kids were amazed when they got home!

(I think they might even be willing

to clean the tubs a little more often from now on!)

So, if your tub is looking a little neglected today,

GIVE IT A TRY!

You'll be glad you did.

"Make a Craft" Monday...St. Patrick's Day!

I can't believe St. Patrick's Day is almost here!

(This year is flying by!)

Since my husband is Irish/Scottish,

we LOVE celebrating St. Patrick's Day in our family!

Jen and I have decided to have a big family party this year!

To get us in the mood,

we've started looking for fun crafts that we can make

either for party decorations

or to entertain all of the little munchkins on the big day!

Here's what we've come up with so far...

"A Treasure Hunt"

We'll have clues hidden that the kids will have to find.

(We'll post them for you to see after we get them made.)

The treasure will be a Pot of Treats!

We'll print off a countdown for each of the cousins

"Make A Craft" Monday... Lincoln's Log Cabin!

Happy President's Day!

In honor of Abraham Lincoln,

we've decided to make our own rendition of his log cabin.

We got to go to Kentucky several years ago
and visit the real one.

Pretty cool!

So, first of all, you'll need five items:

Crackers, Pretzel Sticks, Rolos, Chocolate Frosting & a Milk Carton

Next, grab the scissors and tape.

Cut off the top part of the milk container

so that it looks more like an A-Frame.

Tape it across the top to hold it in place.

Cut out a window and put a piece of scotch tape over it.

Cut out the bottom of the milk carton

if you want your cabin to be illuminated from the inside.

It will be able to sit on top of a small flashlight

or battery operated candle when it's done.

Next, frost one side of the cabin with chocolate frosting.

Add the pretzel sticks.

Repeat on the side with the window.

(You'll have to break the pretzel sticks to fit around it.)

Make the door out of a cracker and attach it with frosting.

Add a tiny bit of frosting to make the door handle.

Attach a Rolo with frosting to make the chimney.

Add frosting and pretzels to the rest of the cabin.

Tada!! Something even Abe would be proud of!

"Time to..." Thursday: Dust Ceiling Fans!

Yep, it was definitely time to dust those ceiling fans today! Doesn't seem that difficult, right? Well, it's something I tend to put off...

not because it's hard...just more of a hassle!

You see, we've got two ceiling fans in our home, but they both happen to be in the only two rooms of the house with vaulted ceilings. So, picture me standing 6 feet below those darn fans, with an extension on the swiffer, playing hit and miss with the fan as it decides to turn just at the moment I try to "dust"

...more like swat...the darn thing!

Oh, and we can't forget the game of "dodge the dust balls" we play as it suddenly starts to "rain" from the fan. Finally, when it's looking all shiny and new again, you would think I'd be done.

Oh no...the fun is just beginning.

Yes, the fan may be clean, but now I've got a lovely layer of dust all over the carpet that I get to vacuum up!

There had to be an easier way.

I came across this "brilliant" idea of dusting ceiling fans with a pillowcase and decided to try it out. But, we still had one big obstacle to overcome....I'm not 12 feet tall...and a pillowcase on the end of an extended swiffer just wasn't going to do the trick.

So, that meant yours truly was going to have to break down and use the ladder! This very likely could have been the second time EVER that I've been on one of those things. (There's a distant memory of one other possible time, but apparently I've blocked it out.) But, I was determined to conquer those dust bunnies...

so....out came the ladder!

As I was figuring out how to set it up, our Husky perched herself on the floor below me and gave me a look that said all too clearly, "Oh, this is going to be good!" (Ya, Mama doesn't do heights!)

I think it took more time to get up on that ladder

and convince myself that I wasn't going to fall,

than it actually did to dust the whole ceiling fan!

But...the verdict is in!

The pillowcase technique works GREAT!

It took under five minutes to complete the whole job

and there were only a few stray "dust balls" that managed

to find their way to the floor...no vacuuming needed!

So, if you have any ceiling fans in your house

that are calling your name today, give it a try!

Traditions have always been very important in our family
since the time we were young. We were taught by our parents and hope to instill in our kids how important traditions are. I really do believe they're the "glue" that holds the family together.

Here's our Top 5 picks for Valentine's Day traditions that can
make lasting memories year after year...

1. Update pictures in a family photo frame every Valentine's Day.

2. Have a party! Invite friends and family over each year to celebrate. Do it on a day other than Valentine's...maybe the Friday or Saturday before, so that the "couples" can still celebrate the day how they would like to.

"Food Friday"....Taco Soup!

1 packet Taco Seasoning
1-2 lb. ground beef (browned - add the packet of taco seasoning toward the end)
1 can pinto beans (drained)
1 can kidney beans (drained)
1 can black beans (drained)
1 can Rotel
1 can Stewed tomatoes (I like the flavor of the Italian Stewed Tomatoes)
2 cans tomato sauce
1 can of corn

Dump all ingredients into a crockpot.

Put the lid on and cook on low for 8 hours

or high for 4-6 hours.

It's as easy as that!

Top each bowl with shredded cheese

and a dallop of sour cream if desired!

Serve with tortilla chips or rolls.

"Time To" Thursday....get rid of the Coupon Chaos!!!

Do any of you couponers, like myself, have a pile of coupons that looks like this???

Yikes!!!!!

(oh & don't be jealous of my paisley blue blanket! Ha!

I am still on the lookout for "the perfect" bedding! Until then,

this little beauty serves it's purpose!)

I decided today, it was time to take care of my coupon chaos and get organized again!

This is an accumulation of inserts since October! Ahhhhh!!!

Four months of piling up, I would not recommend!

With the holidays and feeling "couponed out" I let this happen!

So today I faced it...head on!

Now, I would not call myself a

"coupon Queen" in any way!

I leave that up to "the pro's" like

www.freebies2deals.com and www.pinchingyourpennies.com.

I am not someone who has shelves and shelves of deals I have found.

But it sure does feel good to save an average of

$30-$80 on a grocery trip

and even get items for FREE!!!

Before I let this chaos accumulate I would sit down on Sunday night after the ads came

and spend about a half hour cutting and organizing.

I have taken different ideas from a couple of sites and this is what works best for me!

I made papers that look like this...

each square matches a tab in my binder

(again...don't be jealous of that blue paisley blanket! Ha!)

Once I find a coupon I know that I will use before it expires,

I cut it out and place it on the paper square it correllates to.

After I have cut all the coupons I then start at the beginning of my binder.

I take the pile of coupons on the square that correllates with the tab

and insert the coupons into the dividers.

I have found by doing it this way then I'm not flipping back and forth through my binder

a million times after I cut each coupon.

Then I go to my favorite websites...look at the deals they have found

make a list of what I need to buy...

and I'm ready to go shopping and save some $$$!!

Yes...couponing is time consuming, especially at first!

But once you're organized and don't let 4 months of inserts pile up

then it's really not too bad!

And the $$ you save is totally worth it!

"Tradition" Tuesday... It's Almost Valentine's Day!

It's February....the month of Love! There's so many ways to let our family and friends know how much they mean to us and Valentine's Day is one of the perfect times to do just that! I remember Valentine's Day as a child....selecting just the right valentine for each person in my school class. Heaven forbid if a boy that had the "cooties" got one that could even possibly make him think you might like him! Yes, they all had to be chosen very carefully. Then came the fun part, decorating our "mail boxes" that the valentines would be put in! I remember cutting paper hearts....red, pink, purple....all different sizes. We carefully poured the glitter over the designs we had made with the glue and whatever else we happened to come up with each year. After the party was over and I was back at home, I loved sitting in my living room with friends and going through each and every one of them. "Oooohhhh he likes you!" Could it really be true?! I was sure that EVERYBODY put as much thought into their valentines as I did. Somehow, through those child-like eyes, we didn't notice that there were only so many messages in each box of Valentines....messages that kept repeating themselves on the next card. But to us....they were magical....and just HAD to be true! Besides the school party, there are many other things you can do with your family/friends to make Valentine's Day something they'll always look forward to. Here are some of our favorites...

Decorate your home ~ lots of hearts, candles, or white twinkling lights
Make your own Valentine's Day Cards to mail to family/friends that are far away
Have a special dinner by candle light with sparkling cider ~ with or without the kids
Make treats for the kids school classes
Go to Valentine's Day story time at the library
Scatter heart shaped wrapped chocolates around the house
Have a Valentine's Day party for your family/friends
Make a scrapbook of the kids valentines from their friends at school
Have a cookie/cupcake decorating party
Serve heart shaped food on Valentine's Day ~ pancakes/french toast for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, etc.
Scatter red/pink/white helium filled balloons around the house
Serve a heart shaped cake for dessert
Give each of the girls in your family a single red rose ~ teachers/grandma too.
Watch a Valentine's movie together (don't forget the popcorn!)
If you're single, have a sleep-over with the gals ~ have dinner, paint your nails, facials, pamper yourselves! Talk, laugh, share your favorite snacks....make it a night of FUN!

"Make A Craft" Monday... "Ice Cream Sodas!"

One of my favorite crafts to make is the "Ice Cream Soda!" Simple and fun! Grab your kids, grab some candy and let's get started! First of all, you'll need a Soda/Sundae glass. We found ours at The Dollar Tree...our favorite place for things like this! Next, pick out your favorite candies to fill the glass. We choose M&M's (family size bag) and a box of Malted Milk Balls...Strawberry Flavored...Yum! Fill it up about an inch from the top.

Next, you'll need a styrofoam ball.

Wrap it in saran wrap and put it over the top of the glass.

For the next part, you'll need a hot glue gun. (Keep it on the lowest setting.) You'll also need a large bag of taffy. We choose pink/red to match the candy in the glass. Use the hot glue gun to attach the taffy to the styrofoam ball. (You only need about a dot of glue on each piece of taffy.) Do it "assembly style" with the kids. Let them hand you the taffy and you glue it on....that way no little fingers get burned and they feel like they're helping.

Continue to add the taffy row by row...

When you get closer to the top, add a straw. Cut the straw in half, poke a hole in the styrofoam ball where you want the straw to go and use a drop of glue on the end of the straw to hold it in place.

Fill in the rest of the styrofoam ball with the taffy

and "VOILA"... a delicious "Ice Cream Soda!

We whipped this up in less than a half hour!

Quick, easy and something everyone on your gift list would enjoy!

"Time To" Thursday... Get Ready for Valentine's Day!

Valentine's Day has always been in the
top three of my favorite holidays!
There is just something about feeling that
"love in the air" and the candy in the stores
around this time of year that is awesome!!!
There's a family memory
(unfortunately I was too young
to remember it, but wish I did,
or at least a picture!)
of my Dad dressed as Cupid -
a bow & arrow in hand,
good ol' tube socks up to his knees,
a white t-shirt
and some sort of diaper looking thing covering his bottom half! Ha!!
He came dancing down the stairs
on Valentine's Day
to humor his 7 children!
What a good sport!

Although I have no memory
of this particular event...
one thing I do remember is
how fun my parents made the holidays!
There was always some sort of tradition
or treats and balloons on the table!
I think that's why I love this holiday
so much! It's the memories!

So...of course now that I have
started a family of my own,
I want to carry on these traditions
and help my children
enjoy the holidays as well!
This year for Valentine's Day,
I decided to make a simple advent calendar!

(I apologize for the not so great pictures
but the lighting is not the best in my house...especially late at night!)

In each envelope, there is a treat
or a heart with an activity to do together!
Day 1 - we decorated the house!

Other activities include -

picking a game or art activity out of a bucket
making cupcakes
make heart shaped crayons
"heart attack" Daddy's side of the bed with paper hearts and write reasons why we love him
make Valentine's for friends and family members
and on day 14 - Valentine's Day will be a Scavenger Hunt leading to a Valentine's Day Surprise!

The options and ideas are endless!!
