At the Orange County Museum of Art (OCMA) families enjoy art for FREE every Second Sunday sponsored by Target. Not only are the galleries FREE but OCMA sketches out a day of artfully designed activities from tours for teens and adults to hands-on art projects for kids. All the activities are tied into a current exhibit or holiday events.

What’s happening this month? October Rush 11am to 4pm on Sunday, Oct. 11. It’s the opening day of “Carlos Amorales: Discarded Spider.” Kids create creepy-crawly projects inspired by this new exhibition and the whole familiy gets jumping with live entertainment Newport-Costa Mesa Unified School District students. Act fast before the curtain closes on Free Night of Theater in the San Diego area. Only a few tickets remain for this annual event where stages nationwide offer two FREE tickets to one performance in each of the participating cities. And who wouldn’t want to see a performance of Zombie Prom in Coronado before Halloween?

Learn to build your own computer for FREE. The catch (or the bonus, depending on your point of view), is you have to build five computers for others before you can take one home.

Free Geek hands off those computers, which they call “FreekBoxes,” to other volunteers and nonprofit organizations or sells them in its thrift store. If building a FreekBox lacks appeal, you can still “adopt” a computer in trade for 24 hours of other volunteer service.

Every FreekBox is loaded with Ubuntu Linux and a selection of useful FREE, open source applications. Free Geek refurbishes and recycles about 500 tons a year of these necessities of modern life in service to the community. You can plug in by taking an informational tour at noon or 5pm every Tuesday through Saturday. Hours to build computers are 11am -7pm same days.

Kids interested in building a computer? They must be at least age 16 or be accompanied by adult or older sibling to participate.

Pass the potato salad. Picnic areas are peppered throughout Griffith’s hills, each suited to how you envision your afternoon outing. Mineral Wells is smaller, intimate, out of the way. Pecan Grove, near the freeway, suitable for quick getaways. Park Center is good sized with a playground. The Old Zoo picnic area still holds the old animal cages plus picnic tables and grills.
