Handel Rigaudon

2012-12-10T13:44:00.000-08:00

Rigaudon and the movement that follows it, from Handel's Water Music Suite No.2, arranged for 4 guitars. I listened to Le Concert Spirituel perform it at the Proms this year and couldn't get it out of my head. I felt a definite need to arrange it. In the pdf file the score is followed by the parts. Scribd insists on calling it Rigaud On. Oh, well.

The Sailor's Hornpipe

2012-11-01T02:21:00.005-07:00

Harder than it looks, I think - especially if you want to play it fast. There are two versions here: the second includes tab and chords.

Guitar Quartet

2012-03-17T11:41:00.002-07:00

Published at the start of the 19th century, Peacock's Tunes is a collection of folk melodies for Northumbrian pipes. This suite of pieces is arranged from the book. Some of the parts are easier than others - none harder than Grade 2. It includes The Oyster Wife's Rant and O Say Bonny Lass. The downloadable pdf below includes both score and parts.

Michael Finnegan

2011-10-22T15:51:00.000-07:00

Michael Finnegan arranged for guitar trio. All parts are elementary - the middle part very much so.

Battle Pavane

2011-10-16T15:46:00.000-07:00

An arrangement of Susato's Pavane: La Bataille (The Battle Pavane)(1551) for guitar quartet. It's a great piece of early music to play. It's usually played on loud instruments - but it's no less effective on quiet ones! I've simplified it very slightly in one or two places but I don't think the simplifications detract from the overall effect. Works well with a drum playing an ostinato of one crotchet, two quavers. One performer on its first outing pointed out that there's a quote from the film "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" in it. I hadn't noticed.

The document below incudes the score plus parts for all four players.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

2011-07-19T02:34:00.000-07:00

Or, if you prefer, the French tune Ah! vous dirai-je, Maman, first written down and printed in 1761. Mozart wrote variations on it. Combine it with Jane Taylor's famous short poem (first published in Rhymes for the Nursery in 1806) and you have the ubiquitous Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, as sent up by Lewis Carroll - and beloved of people learning instruments ever since.

Espana

2011-07-08T16:28:00.000-07:00

A short piece in a Spanish style with a suggestion of flamenco - with a couple of scales thrown in to fill up the sheet!

Take Three, Take Four

2011-06-22T15:00:00.000-07:00

A short piece in a mixture of 3/4 and 4/4. It's about Grade 1 standard.

Lord of the Dance

Bobby Shaftoe

2011-04-05T14:10:00.000-07:00

A sheet of easy tunes: Bobby Shaftoe, When The Boat Comes In, Tallis' Canon and Sur le Pont d'Avignon.

Drunken Sailor

2011-03-03T23:16:00.000-08:00

A tab version of the famous tune, What Shall We Do With A Drunken Sailor?

A Carol Arrangement

2010-12-09T14:33:00.000-08:00

One of my favourite carol tunes. Personent Hodie was first published in 1582, in the Finnish collection of songs, Piae Cantiones, along with Good King Wenceslas and Unto Us a Child is Born (well, those are the words we put to the tunes these days).

This arrangement is a simple one - it's about Trinity Initial Grade level.

If you're after a lot of carol tunes, click on "Christmas Tabs" link, above.

Two Little Pieces

2010-11-29T02:33:00.000-08:00

Two pieces for classical guitar. I was going to call them studies but that sounds more boring. The first (all about spreading easy chords with the thumb) has a jazz feel, the second is lively and dramatic.

The first is about Grade 2 (Trinity), the second is harder - and harder to define Grade-wise, I think.

Minuet

2010-11-10T07:16:00.000-08:00

Another movement arranged from a Haydn Baryton Trio - this time a Minuet. The middle part has been rewritten: it's been made very simple, using only G, A, B and C.

Three Tunes

2010-11-07T00:25:00.000-07:00

Amazing Grace, The Can Can and Joshua at the Battle of Jericho.

Elementary, but not as easy as those in the previous post.

The Sailor's Hornpipe: with Tab

The Sailor's Hornpipe with tab and chords.

Elementary Tune Sheet

2010-11-06T00:36:00.000-07:00

A sheet of very elementary pieces for children - ranging from 3-note tunes to 5-note tunes. It includes Old McDonald Had a Farm and Little Bo Peep.

In case anyone is interested in a fuller version of the Three Note Jig included on the sheet, I've uploaded a complete version of that tune as well.

Haydn Trio

2010-11-01T07:46:00.000-07:00

A movement from a Haydn Baryton Trio, arranged for three guitars. I've not seen any dynamics in the original and as it seems like a good piece for pupils to work out good ones for themselves, I thought I'd leave them out too.

Handout
