Understanding Tonewoods when purchasing an acoustic guitar:

Many factors affect the acoustic guitar’s sound quality. Among the most important are the tonewoods that are used to produce the soundboard (top), sides, and back. The sound quality is produced by 4 major things in general, assuming the player is skilled:

The strings

The tonewoods

The craftsmanship

and finish of the acoustic guitar

For this particular article, we will focus on the tonewoods. Whether you are a beginner looking to buy the best beginner acoustic guitar, or more experienced player, be sure to understand more about tonewoods before making the commitment.

The top or soundboard of the guitar is perhaps one of the most influential pieces. The top of the guitar is made of different kinds of woods, but a few are very popular:

Sitka Spruce is the most popular tonewood used for guitar tops because of its straight grain pattern, strength to weight ratio, and abundance. Sitka produces a well-balanced sound in the bass, mid-range and treble or high frequencies.

Engelmann Spruce is like Sitka Spruce, only it is less in supply and fewer soundboards can be produced from a single tree based on the tree’s girth. Englemann is the choice in some higher priced guitars, and has unique tone qualities that rival Sitka Spruce, yet not producing quite the same sound velocity and therefore a reduce output or sound projection.

Cedar is the most popular tonewood for acoustic classical guitar tops. Cedar is another straight, finely-grained wood and provides a more mellow, rich tone when compared with Sitka Spruce.

Mahogany is more widely used in the necks, sides and backs of many acoustic guitars because of it’s strength and sound qualities. It is not the most popular top or soundboard wood used but has been used in many acoustic guitar models.

Maple is the lowest in sound velocity, and is used for specific instances when a guitar with a more muted tone is desired.

Although the top of the guitar is the most important piece

The sides and back of the acoustic guitar are the next most important permanent part of the guitar that affect the overall tone quality and sound profile of the guitar, affecting 4 factors of the sound profile:

High range (treble)

Mid range

Low range (bass)

And overall projection

Two of the most popular tonewoods for the sides and back in higher quality guitars are:

Rosewood and Mahogany.

There are different species of both, but we will simply talk about how the general characteristics of the two affect and shape the tone of the acoustic guitar.

Rosewood (common types are East Indian and Brazilian), give the acoustic guitar a full sound with projection in all 3 ranges, and more so in the bass range than Mahogany and other tonewoods.

Mahogany projects more in the mid range and high range. When played next to an acoustic guitar made with Rosewood sides and back, a discerning ear can certainly notice the fuller, bass balanced sound from a Rosewood acoustic guitar.

Other woods that are also commonly used in making the back and sides of the acoustic guitar include:

African Sapele – giving a brighter tone similar to Mahogany

Nato (cheaper species of Mahogany)

Koa (Hawaiian exotic wood) giving a lush, richer sound similar to Hawaiian steel slide guitars

Maple – giving a brighter, higher end sound with lower projection qualities due to the reduced sound velocity of the wood.

Composite – man made materials that have been used in producing the sides and back of many guitars in attempt to produce guitars with less wood materials, being cheaper in manufacturing costs.

This is certainly not an exhaustive list of tonewoods (and other materials) used in guitar making, as luthiers continue to experiment with different species of woods. However, using this simple checklist when researching and compiling information will help anyone make a more informed decision when purchasing an acoustic guitar.

Purchasing an acoustic guitar can be a challenging process. Whether you are considering purchasing a guitar for the first time, for the 10th time, or as a gift for another, understanding the entire construction process and craftsmanship of an acoustic guitar is essential in making the best investment.

Although price is important, don’t buy a guitar based solely on price.

Price is by far a good starting point, because we typically try to buy what we can afford. However, in any price bracket, decent guitars as well as inferior acoustic guitars can be found. Knowing a bit about how guitars are made, how to properly research a guitar, and finally, how to give it a final inspection (whether purchasing online or offline) is essential to be confident in your purchase decision. There is actually a very popular beginner acoustic guitar being sold currently for under $100, as an investment, the player will most likely be disappointed in 6 months to a year if he or she steadily improves and desires a guitar that can support their playing as they grow. A player can easily plateau in the early to intermediate phases because the guitar simply is not of sound quality.

A true example: A friend of mine (a drummer by trade) was going to purchase an acoustic guitar and pay over $1100 for it because it was one of the most popular brand names, especially in the electric guitar realm. However, he asked if I would go with him just for a second opinion. In about 3 minutes, I was able to show him why he would be getting a bad deal in this mass produced popular model, and how purchasing another more obscure model would be a much better investment. He has been tickled since. This brings us to the next point. . .

Beware of buying a guitar based just on brand: Buying a guitar based on it’s brand is a good start because brands have reputations. However, brands can be deceiving. What a particulay guitar company does well in one line of guitar products may not be true in another line.

A few questions or ideas to explore about the brand are:

Whether their reputation has been built soundly for acoustic guitars, electric guitars, or both.

Is their reputation built upon other industries, products or instruments?

Can the brand justify the pricing points based on a solid product of good craftsmanship or are they able to sell an overpriced product because of their reputation in other lines or products.

If the brand outsources their production to other countries, how has it affected the quality and longevity of the instrument?

Has the brand been around long enough to prove that their guitars have improved with age?

Is the brand young and obscure (not very popular), but producing high quality products?

Just because a brand has built a quality product in one line, does not mean it transfers necessarily to other lines of instruments or industries. Additionally, just because a company is small or obscure, does not mean it does not produce quality products at a bargain price.

In all, try to purchase your guitar with the player’s best interests in mind.

Start by answering the following question to begin your research process as it pertains to the players.

Is the player going to be investing in a future in guitar playing?

Are you willing to pay a little more to get the best beginner acoustic guitar for the player’s success?

Is the player particularly small?

Does he or she have small arms or hands?

Is the guitar going to be used for concerts or just personal fun?

Is the guitar player going to need a pickup system (or an acoustic-electric guitar) to plug into an amplifying system?

What styles or genres of music will the player be focusing on?

Does the player prefer to have the guitar project more bass, mid-tones, treble or is he or she looking to find a guitar that projects well in all 3 basic ranges.

Who will the player be playing with and how will the instrument balance with the other players?

A few other areas to get acquainted with include:

Learning how to spot quality craftsmanship.

Learning to do adequate research on buyer reviews.

Learning how different acoustic guitar body styles and tone woods affect the tone quality and projection.

Learning how different finishes affect the sound profile of an acoustic guitar

Learning how different strings affect playability and sound.

Learning what objections people have written in reviews that should not affect your decision.

Understanding pickups and electronics in acoustic-electric guitars to get the results you are seeking.

Overall, breaking down your research into a few major categories and learning a bit in each category will help you to make your next acoustic guitar purchase with confidence. In other articles, we will break down these topics in more detail.

Her are effective tips to learn How to Play Bass Guitar

Learning how to play bass guitar is simple and easy. Even so, it still takes time and effort. It also requires a genuine passion or at least fondness for music and, better yet, the instrument itself. If you can guarantee all these then all you need are just the tips below and you’ll learn how to play bass guitar in no time.

The Bass Guitar
In most genres, the bass guitar is used to provide a solid background for a melody. It gives depth to a song. It’s critical to understand this if you want to play the bass guitar effectively with a band. But of course, if you’re playing on your own then naturally you’ll have to play the melody as well. Remember, however, that the sounds a bass guitar makes tend to be stronger and deeper compared to the music produced by other instruments.

A standard bass guitar has 4 thick strings. But advanced and expert guitarists occasionally use bass guitars with even double that number of strings because it’s what they prefer or it’s that kind of complexity their musical piece requires.

As mentioned earlier on, the strings of bass guitar are thicker than usual, certainly more so compared to what’s used for electric guitars. It’s this thickness that’s responsible for the deep sounds that your bass guitar is able to produce.

Reading Notes
If you remember just enough from your music course in high school then that’s enough to provide you with a foundation for learning to read music notes used for the bass guitar in greater depth. For many, learning how to read notes – and do so while playing – is more difficult than playing an instrument. Granted, you can always play by memory, but reading notes is imperative when you decide to play with a band.

Sometimes, you’ll be required to make sudden changes on your pieces. The changes will be noted down on your music book, but if you don’t know how to read them then you’ll be forced to memorize them almost immediately.

Textbook Use
If you have the time and money to invest in a short music course or lessons with a bass guitar tutor then go for it. But if not, you can still learn the proper way of playing by learning from a bass guitar textbook. It’s important that you find the right textbooks to use because they’ll teach you the things that you’ll have a hard time learning yourself like proper posture and finger positioning.

There is a big difference on learning how to play acoustic guitar songs verses being able to pick a guitar up and strum out a couple sounds. Unfortunately, that’s about as far as most people go.

They think they will just be able to pick up the instrument and automatically get it after a couple of tries. In reality, you have to continue to work on your skills in order to ever truly develop. However, with these things in mind, you need to remember that there are definitely right ways to go about learning the guitar and wrong ways. Choosing the right way will make the task much easier.

Before you learn all the cool different things you can do with a guitar, such as bending, hammer-ons, pull-offs, vibrato, strumming, and alternate picking, you need to learn the basics. You need to learn how to tune and clean

your guitar, and if any of the strings ever break or get worn out you need to learn how to replace them. Of course, checking the intonation of the instrument is very important, as is knowing the proper places to store it. Before you learn how to play acoustic guitar chords, though, you need to pick out the right model.

Your local music store will be able to help you select the right set up for your guitar if you don’t already have one. They will be able to recommend one based on the way you play, and it’s helpful because in the future they’ll know how you can upgrade the guitar as your own skills improve.

In other words, if you are serious about learning how to play acoustic guitar songs, then you will be able to keep improving as long as you want. There really is no ceiling, and the more you understand about everything involved in playing, the better you will be.

The last thing that you need to remember as you set out to learn how to play acoustic guitar chords is that you need to take practice seriously. You don’t have to practice several hours per day, but you can’t just play for a half hour each week and expect to ever become proficient with the instrument.

Guitar Chords for Beginners – 3 String D, C and D7

Today’s beginner lesson is going to teach you three different chords. These chords are going to be played on the bottom three strings of your guitar, the G, B and high E strings, and two of them will only require you to use one finger on one fret.

These chords are the perfect beginner primer to full six string chords and will give you something to practice with besides single notes on a particular string. A note about the guitar TAB I’ve used below to explain the chords. The 0′s represent strings that are played open, numbers represent the fret number you play on that string and an X means you don’t play that string at all.

C Chord

E — 0 —
B — 1 —
G — 0 —
D — X —
A — X —
E — X —

To play the beginner three string C chord you use your first finger on the 1st fret of the B string and strum the bottom three strings, G, B & E.

G Chord

E — 3 —
B — 0 —
G — 0 —
D — X —
A — X —
E — X —

To play the G chord, like the C chord, you only require one finger. Use your third finger on the 3rd fret of the high E string and strum the bottom three strings.

D7 Chord

E — 1 —
B — 2 —
G — 1 —
D — X —
A — X —
E — X —

To play the D7 chord place your second finger on the 1st fret of the E string, your third finger on the 2nd fret of the B string and your first finger on the 1st fret of the G string.

So that’s it, your first three string chords. Try practicing these each day you pick up your gutiar and also try integrating switching between them while strumming. They sound nice together in any order and will help you get ready for more difficult chord switches and strumming patterns.

Understanding how to tune and play your guitar by ear is a good skill for a beginner to have. You don’t always have access to an electric tuner and it can be time consuming. By understanding a couple of tricks on the guitar neck you can quickly learn to get all the strings on your guitar in tune in just a couple of minutes without the need of any electric tuner.

There are only two things you need to remember when learning to tune your guitar by ear.

The first is that any string on the guitar neck can be tuned to the string above it on the 5th fret with one exception.

The second thing to remember is that the exception occurs when trying to tune the B string, you must play the 4th fret on the G string above it rather then the 5th fret.

Example: Let’s say that your G string is sounding a bit out of tune. By playing the D string at the 5th fret you can compare that sound to the open G string. If the G string doesn’t sound the same you can adjust it higher or lower by turning the tuning peg until the notes match.

I’d suggest practicing this each time you sit down with your guitar. After a week or two you’ll find you can check all your strings very quickly and make any minor adjustments that are needed.

Below is a short guitar video that explains why the 5th fret on each string matches the note below it, and also walks you through an example tuning of all 5 strings on the guitar.

Building a Solid Foundation

Knowing the notes on each guitar string is a foundational skill that all beginner guitar players should know. Since all chords and scales are made up of notes, understanding your way around the guitar neck is like the first building block you must learn. Learning how to play acoustic guitar will be so much simpler, along with how to play bass guitar, if you like that instrument as well. It really doesn’t matter.

In this post you’re going to learn how to find notes on each string. First we’ll talk about the spacing between notes, how to find the notes on the neck and then I’ll give you an example that ties it all together. If you want to learn how to play blues guitar, and how to play electric guitar - these tips will serve you well. In fact, they form the basis for learning how to play the guitar for you and your listeners.

Steps – Whole and Half

Thankfully there are only so many notes we have to be concerned with. For this exercise we’re only worried about those notes A through G not sharps or flats. The term step is used to describe the spacing between one note and the next. Steps can be a half or whole step and the space between different notes can vary.

On the guitar neck one half step is the equivalent of one fret. So a full step would be two frets. Knowing how frets relate to steps and then knowing how many steps are between each note makes it very easy to find notes on the guitar neck and not just memorize them.

Between most notes there is usually one whole step, or two frets. There are two exceptions, between the B and C notes there is one half step and between the E and F notes there is one half step. This means we only move up one fret to go from a B note to a C note or an E note to an F note.

Below is the explanation of the spacing between each of the 7 musical notes A through G in terms of steps and frets.

A to B = Full Step or Two Frets

B to C = Half step or One Fret

C to D = Full Step or Two Frets

D to E = Full Step or Two Frets

E to F = Half Step or One Fret

F to G = Full Step or Two Frets

Alright so all this is fine and dandy but how do we take this concept and move it to the actual guitar neck? Thankfully we can start with the name of each string, E, A, D, G, B and E. Each string denotes the note that is played when you strike it open, that is with no frets pressed down. So Let’s look at a simple example using the Low E string.

What comes after E? It’s F, this is one of the exceptions where only a half step exists. So moving up on fret or a half step gives us an F note on the 1st fret of the low E string..

After F comes G, that’s one full step so we move up two frets to the 3rd and that’s the G note.

One more, after the G we go back to the start for the A note and there is one full step here as well. So we slide up two more frets to the 5th fret where we play the A note.

You can use these same rules and system to start with any open string and move up the neck to determine what notes are where. It can seem tough at first but you’ll start to see the patterns and will slowly memorize certain note locations.

Take a few minutes to watch this training video below where the same concept is explained and an example given for the top 3 strings. After watching the video grab your guitar and give this exercise a try. It takes a little time to memorize the notes on each string but remember practice makes perfect!

(Guitar Teacher Guest Post by Ian Frazer)

Trying to memorize where all the different major chords are on the neck can be quite a challenge. Think back to when you first learned all your open chords. There were a lot of em, plus all the minors, sustained and diminished chords. It’s a lot to keep in your head. Anything that can make it easier is worth while learning I figure, and that’s why I’m a fan of the CAGED guitar system.

The CAGED system basically gives you a short cut way to remember the different locations and forms of all the major chords at different locations on the neck.

The name CAGED is based on the chord shapes that are used to form the other major chords on the neck. So think about the shapes you make for a C major, A major, G major, E major and D major chord. Using these same shapes in barre chords reveals an easy to memorize pattern for locating 5 versions of all major chords A through G.

The video below is a quick walk through with an example showing you how you can make an E major chord using not just the E open shape but also on the 2nd fret with a D shape, 4th Fret with a C shape, 7th fret with an A shape and 9th fret with a G shape.

A great exercise after watching this video is for you to go grab your guitar and practice finding the variations of other chords on the neck using the CAGED system.

Eventually you’re going to want to try and memorize the locations and shapes for each of these chords but for now this is a just a great exercise to learn where else on the neck you can find for example an F major chord besides a Barre chord using an E shape at the first fret.

So watch the below video and take some time over the next week to play around with the CAGED system. It’s a fun and fast way to learn major chords in different positions on your guitar.

Here’s the video by Ian (thank you!):

(Yahoo News) WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Les Paul, the guitarist and inventor who changed the course of music with the electric guitar and multitrack recording and had a string of hits, many with wife Mary Ford, died on Thursday. He was 94.

According to Gibson Guitar, Paul died of complications from pneumonia at White Plains Hospital. His family and friends were by his side.

He had been hospitalized in February 2006 when he learned he won two Grammys for an album he released after his 90th birthday, “Les Paul & Friends: American Made, World Played.”

“I feel like a condemned building with a new flagpole on it,” he joked.

As an inventor, Paul helped bring about the rise of rock ‘n’ roll and multitrack recording, which enables artists to record different instruments at different times, sing harmony with themselves, and then carefully balance the “tracks” in the finished recording.

It seems like it’s always hard to learn how to play guitar when you first start. However, we all started somewhere. Learning how to play guitars, both electric and acoustic must follow certain steps.

These tips can be used for acoustic beginner guitar players working on the acoustic guitar chops.

1. Be sure that you don’t ever let the fingernails of your fretting hand get too long. If your nails do get too long, it will have a negative affect on your playing because you won’t be able to push down on the guitar strings the way that you need to.

2. Guitars are available in different sizes, and it’s important that you get the size that feels comfortable for your body. Don’t get a guitar that is too large or too small for you, just because it was less expensive.

3. Always stretch and warm up your hands and wrists well before you play. This is very important, since it will prevent stiffness, thus improving your playing and helping to prevent strains and other injuries.

4. Practice each song until you are confident that you know it well, but don’t just keep practicing the same set of songs over and over. Doing that will only help you become very good at playing certain songs, it won’t help you to become a better guitar player in general. Practicing a variety of songs in a variety of very different genres (folks, rock, etc.) will help you to become a very versatile guitar player.

5. Be sure to tune your guitar well every time before you’re going to play. Tuning is pretty simple, and it makes a big difference in the overall quality of your playing. There are machines you can buy to tune your guitar, or there are various websites online that can help you learn how to tune it.

Here is the quick and easy way to learn from Howie Simon’s Sweep Pickin’ for electric guitar. The sweeping effect is actually not done by just one hand. You must use both hands – to perform an integral motion in unison to achieve the desired effect. It makes you sound like a real pro! It’s not easy or preferrable to do this on an acoustic guitar, and that’s why you see players like Frank Gambale and Yngwie Malmsteen always performing the sweep on a distorted electric guitar sound.

Try it for yourself – and remember – don’t worry if you cannot do the electric sweeping function on your first day. Keep plugging away as you are – and by the weekend, you’ll be able to showcase a new technique! Enjoy this video and arpeggio-based approach to finger lickin’…

There are a few things in life that are as pleasurable as learning how to play a guitar.

The guitar is one of the most diverse musical instruments in the world – it fits into any musical style such as classical, blues and Jazz, it is easy to carry and is the height of chic to have in any social occasion. Get a guitar out and people will immediately see you as the leader of the pack and will want to spend time with you!

The guitar is a special instrument, and learning how to play a guitar is a special experience:

It is the leading instrument in pop and rock culture, providing a focal point for any band.

There are many types of guitar- electric, acoustic and classical to name but a few, and learning how to play a guitar is a somewhat different and yet equally enjoyable experience with all types.

It is versatile and sits well across different genres – you name it, the guitar is suited for it.

If you had by now decided to learn how to play a guitar, here are five guitar learning tips for you:

1: Learn to read a guitar music sheet
Many students neglect this part, with potential consequences later in their careers. Once you have mastered the notes on the fingerboard and how the frets sit on the instrument it will become easier, and you can start using your vision as well as hearing to get you on your way. Learning how to play a guitar is a little similar to learning how to play any instrument and mastering the knowledge of the music sheet will come handy for any instrument you choose later on in life.

2: Try learning guitar online
The web has an interesting array of teaching methods such as DVDs and guitar lesson videos, allowing you to watch guitar masters at play, rewind the lesson and fast forward, zoom in and out. These are things you cannot do with a teacher and they will provide inspiration and knowledge that is important when starting out.

3: Master the guitar basics and the rest will follow
Like any other discipline when you learn how to play a guitar you will need to master the basics and not pursue too many short cuts. If you learn where to find the various frets and notes, incorporate music sheets into you routine, work on your hand dexterity, and most of all remember to enjoy yourself, you will be successful.

4: Take guitar lessons
You will also need the discipline that comes from having a physical teacher to correct your mistakes and provide tips – all important things when you learn how to play a guitar. There are many factors to consider when you learn to play – tempo, rhythm, mastering the chords, all of which are well suited to the individual attention which you can receive with a tutor.

5: Left handed guitarist? Don’t despair!
It used to be the case that those of us who are left handed found it nearly impossible to learn how to play a guitar. Guitars had to be re-strung or re-adjusted, resulting in a poor quality of sound and a frustrating experience for the learner. Nowadays if you are left handed and want to learn how to play a guitar the choices are much wider, with a large selection of suitable instruments and a wide variety of stockists.

Learning how to play a guitar is a life changing experience, and one which should definitely be pursued. No wonder it features highly on the list of skills that people would like to master. If you follow the steps above, have a little patience and perseverance, you too will learn how to play a guitar.

Make sure to watch our guitar videos while you are here, and take a guitar lesson now.
